I'm the love of your life - CH 04

"Ivy League school, graduated with honors, fluent in more than 3 languages and let's not start to talk about all the assets she inherited from her family. Damn, Em. You really hit the jackpot with Alison"

Hanna continues to enlist all the things their google search has given them. And, while Hanna looks excited about the results, Emily feels the contrary.

"Em, are you okay?"

No, she's not. How could she be okay knowing that Alison is so out of her league. If the blonde seemed already unreachable, now it's even more. Emily dropped out of school, she has a barista job and some littles work here and there. Nothing to feel proud of, nothing to lure Alison into Emily's orbit. So no, the brunette is not okay but she doesn't say a word to her friend about all her insecurities.

Actions are louder than words. Emily stops rambling about Alison. She stops looking happy at all and the change of mood is so obvious. Hanna notices it, Emily's hesitation to get closer to the blonde teacher. And, Hanna is not the only blonde to notice this change of attitude.

"She has stopped visiting me in the classroom without notice…"

"Who? Emily?"

Alison nods, feeling conflicted with the fact that she misses her stalker. What is wrong with her?! She wonders.

"Well, isn't that what you wanted, Ali?"

Of course, it's what she wanted! She wanted to be left alone and now her wish has been granted and yet, Alison cannot say that to Spencer, why?

"Alison?"

Spencer frowns when she watches her cousin walking away, deeply sighing. Alision should feel happy for not having the puppy Emily around her anymore. She should be grateful for getting back to her life as it was before their encounter and yet, the blonde teacher feels something she hasn't felt in a long, very long time: sadness.

Moping around is not something common in their behavior and yet, Emily and Alison refuse to admit and do something to change it, someone has to intervene. And, that someone is…

"Spencer Hastings"

The tall brunette introduces herself to one of Emily's friends who's entering her office for the first time. Toby nervously stretches his arm and after shaking hands, they sit. Toby looks very nervous, Hanna, who's sitting at his side can see it and that's why she says…

"First time in the Principal office? Don't worry, I've this, I've been here plenty of times…"

"That's correct, Hanna, too many times if I must admit. Not even the most problematic kid in the school is called to my office as much as you"

Hanna smiles, feeling cocky about it, but Spencer reminds her that…

"It's nothing to be proud of…"

Hanna rolls her eyes and Toby nervously chuckles, he's nervous to be in Spencer's office and that's because his heart is beating so fast. He hasn't had a crush for a girl like now in a long, very long time and, it's so obvious he's crushing hard for the dear Principal that Hanna rolls her eyes at how Toby nods to everything that comes out of Spencer's mouth.

"So, do we agree that we must do something? The last thing I need is one of the student catching their depressive vibes"

"And, what do you propose to do Spencer? First Alison didn't want Emily around her and now Emily doesn't dare to approach and she gets upset? C'mon! She needs to make up her mind!"

Hanna has a point, Spencer doesn't deny it, but she knows Alison too well to know that feelings had never been easy for her. While the blonde might be able crack the most challenging math problems, she has always struggled to unscramble her own emotions. She needs a push for it and that's what Spencer has in mind to give them, a little push towards the right direction.

"Ahmm… remember me, when did I volunteer to be a chaperone on this school trip, Hanna?"

"You didn't, Em. I just put your name on the chart"

"HANNA!"

The blonde shrugs with a big smile as she starts to make a lunch bag for the brunette who looks upset, not because she doesn't want to help but because she has to work. This weekend, there's a bachelor party in the bar where she's a barista. The owner of the bar counts on her to be there and that's why…

"Toby will cover your shift in the bar. Do not worry, Em. It's all gonna be fine…"

Emily disagrees, especially when they arrive at the parking of the school and there, in front of the bus they'll take, there she's: Alison. The blonde who is a chaperone too by request of the Principal. This is not how Alison wanted to spend her Saturday, but Spencer didn't give her an option to say 'no'. So, here she's, counting the heads of all the students while they get into the bus and, even with a grumpy face, she looks lovely in the eyes of Emily. The brunette freezes, her heart stops and she tries to turn around, ready to flee before Alison notices them there but, of course Hanna stops her before she can make a step backwards.

"Oh, no, no, no! Em! Do not dare to walk away"

Hanna drags her to the bus and just like Emily is shocked to be there, Alison looks surprised to see them.

"Hi, Alison! Look who's gonna be a chaperone!"

Hanna announces their arrival to help and of course the math teacher doesn't look happy at all. How could Spencer think that Hanna would be a good chaperone?! The blonde is pure trouble! And, she's not wrong since the first thing that Hanna does, it's to ask if she has already confiscated some booze.

"Great, now I've to keep an eye on her, too…"

Emily chuckles when she sees a grumpy Alison, who looks at Hanna like another rebel kid, she has to keep an eye on. And, it's true that Hanna can be problematic, but Alison has nothing to worry about it, because…

"I'll keep an eye on Hanna, do not worry, Alison. She will behave"

This is the first conversation they have in days. It makes Alison feel something warm in her heart and that's probably the only reason why Alison admits out loud…

"I miss you…"

It was a whisper, a mumble that escapes from her mouth without thinking and she regrets the moment it happens. She hopes the other girl didn't hear it at all but looking at the flushed face of the brunette, it's very obvious that Emily heard every word of it. Now, it's Alison who's flushing and running towards her seat in the bus so she cannot say another embarrassing thing in front of the brunette. But, that might be hard to do, especially when Emily is forced to sit at her side when Hanna pushes her into the seat.

"Hanna! What are you doing?!"

"I plan to sleep, and I need an entire seat for me so, you two will share"

Alison gasps in protest, but nothing she says will change a thing, Hanna leans back on the only empty seat left and just like she said it, she falls asleep the moment the bus starts to drive.

For a brief moment, Alison and Emily share a concerned look before looking away and staying stiff for a long moment of the ride. They are the only adults in the bus and yet, they look like two teenagers who don't know how to behave around their crush. Emily's heart doesn't stop accelerating each time there's a turn and gravity pushes her closer to the blonde who's sitting beside her.

What to do? What to do?! A kid to scold? Emily looks around, but all the kids look calm, some of them even snoring, sleeping. How is that no one is misbehaving? The brunette wonders and, she's so worried to find an excuse to leave this seat that she fails to notice that someone else is also falling asleep, till something touches her shoulder.

"A-A-Alison?!"

The blonde doesn't reply, she's already asleep, leaning on Emily and the brunette is having a heart attack because this is the first time the blonde is this close to her. Should she move? Should she put Alison's head to lean over the window instead of her? So many questions round around Emily's mind and yet, the only inner voice the brunette decides to hear right now, it's the voice of her heart who begs her to stay there and not move.

"I miss you, too, Ali"

It's the only thing that Emily mumbles to a sleeping Alison, who's leaning on her shoulder, using it as a pillow during the ride to the museum. Eventually, Emily also gets sleepy and leans her head over Alison. The sweet aroma of vanilla coming from those golden curls is all the brunette needed to fall asleep with a big smile on her face.

Hanna smirks, watching from afar, their plan is working or at least that's how it looks like.

"So, you and Alison seem… better?"

It's an observation Hanna makes once they are in the museum. Emily's eyes drift immediately towards the blonde who's explaining something to a group of students, and she cannot stop smiling at the memory of having the blonde sleeping over her shoulder. A happy thought that gets clouded once again by Emily's insecurities. Sadness is written all over her face, Hanna can see it, just like the other blonde teacher who slowly starts to approach when she notices Emily's sad pout.

"I don't know what the problem is, Em. But, stop getting in your own way to get what you want. You want Alison, so go for it! Serenade her, do some great gesture as you always do"

"It's not that easy, Hanna. She deserves better than someone like me"

Hanna opens her mouth to talk, but another blonde is the one who replies to that statement.

"I decide what is better for me, not you, Emily"

"ALISON!"

Hanna and Emily look at her with big eyes, none of them knows what to say, but Alison knows exactly what she wants to say.

"You're coming with me, Emily. And Hanna, you are in charge. You better not lose any kid while we're gone, this time"

"Hey! That just happened one time!"

Hanna yells while Alison grabs Emily from the arm and drags her to a more quiet and empty part of the museum so they can talk. Emily gulps hard, the blonde is walking in circles, looking mad, really mad after hearing Emily's reason to step away from her. She's out of her league, it's Emily's argument and Alison gets mad. The brunette doesn't understand why.

"Why are you so mad?!"

"Because I really thought you would be the one to change my mind about love…"

"Huh?"

"I've always believed love was nothing more than a scam, a pain in the ass for those who yearn for it and you know what? You're proving me right. You're proving me that I was right because if your supposed love for me, it's weak enough to back out at the first obstacle, if my background, my money intimidate you, then, I'm really good without love at all"

"Ali-..."

The blonde walks away, leaving Emily speechless. The brunette pulled away and, for a moment, Alison really thought she did something wrong but, now, Alison hates to feel sad about it.

You grew up without experiencing things in the 1st hand and you start to believe they are not real at all. Love, she has seen it in movies and for a brief moment she truly thought Emily would finally introduce her to that kind of love, but, it looks like she was wrong… or was she?

"Where's Emily?"

Hanna asks once she gets into the bus, they are ready to go, all kids already in and Alison shrugs, showing no interest in knowing where the brunette is.

"Great! This time I didn't lose a kid, just my best friend!"

Hanna was huffing and ready to look for her friend when they heard someone singing, badly singing…

"What the hell is that?"

One of the kids asks and then, another points out at the brunette who's standing outside the bus, singing Adele's song 'Make you feel my love'.

"What the hell is she doing?"

Alison asks and Hanna mumbles…

"Oh, God, I wasn't being literal, she sucks at singing"

Hanna told her to make a big gesture, to serenade Alison. Well, she's doing it, even if she's out of tune, Emily can be considered as a bad singer, especially when people tell her to just shut up and yet, the brunette keeps going, louder and louder each time. Pushing away her insecurities and what other people might think of her because right now, all that matters, it's…

"To make you feel my love…"

She's bringing her big game on. It's now or never. Kids are filming, this is going to go viral, she might regret it later, but then, she sees Alison steps out of the bus and she knows this is the moment of truth…

"I know you haven't made out your mind up yet,

But, I'll never do you wrong"

Not anymore. Emily saw the sad tears in Alison's eyes when she walked away from her earlier that day and she hates herself for making her sad. She might not have a lot to offer, but at least she can offer that she will never make her sad again.

"'I've known it from the moment that we met…

There's nothing I wouldn't do

To make you feel my love"

From the moment they met, Emily knew she would do till the impossible to put the world at Alison's feet. Even if she is constantly making a fool of herself in front of the perfect blonde. She's doing it now! Singing when she's bad at it, not caring about the laughs and the consequences because Alison is smiling. She's smiling at her bad, terrible singing and that's more than enough for her to keep going.

"I could make you happy, make your dreams come true,.."

She would do anything for her, anything at all, but, right now, all Alison needs from her right now is to shut up because she really sucks and what better way to shut her down than with a kiss.

"GO! Miss DiLaurentis!"

The kids whistle, start to tease the two girls who're right now kissing in the parking lot and Emily stays stiff for a moment, eyes getting bigger, she's very surprised at the turn of events but loving the taste of Alison's lips on her own.

"And that, my children is how you declare someone is the love of your life"

Years have passed since then and yet, Emily can recall that day as it was yesterday.

"Again, mommy, again!"

"It has already been the 3rd time I tell you the story of how I got together with your mamma. Aren't you tired?"

The twins shake their heads and Emily starts again from the beginning. She also tells them the story about how Aunty Spencer got together with Uncle Toby when he replaced her in a job. Who would have thought that Spencer would find love in a bachelor party?

Emily slowly steps out of the room of the twins when they finally fall asleep. She walks into her room where her wife was already in bed, waiting for her.

"Please tell me you skipped the part of the bar this time"

"What is wrong with that part of the story? I find it funny…"

"Well, excuse me if I don't want our kids to believe that they will find love by spanking people's butt"

Emily chuckles and nods, Alison is right, they are too young to hear that part at least for now. And now that their kids are asleep, she can curl in bed, beside Alison who's reading a book. Some things never change. The blonde is focused, reading, Pepe at the foot end of the bed, Emily leans on the blonde's arm and asks…

"Ali…?"

"Hmmm?"

"When did you realize I was the love of your life?"

Alison stops looking at her book and turns her view towards the brunette. She smiles with a teasing smirk when she says…

"When you, my stalker, sang awful to me and I still loved it"

"I don't sing that bad…"

"I agree to disagree…"

Emily rolls her eyes and rolls in bed with a pout. Alison chuckles and puts away the book so she can become Emily's big spoon. The pout of the brunette changes into a big smile when Alison's arms wrap her in a warm hug.

"Love u, Em"

"Love u, Ali"

Just the love of your life can prove you wrong. And, Alison was so wrong to believe Love wasn't real. It's more real than the air she breathes. She just needed to meet Emily to figure out what real love is.
