Previously, in Pokémon: The Lost Child, Prinplup asked Zangoose about the mysterious Arceus that they had heard so much about. They were led to the house of one of the village elders, who would only tell them what he knew if he judged them worthy. However, when he read Prinplup's heart, his mind was overwhelmed so much that he killed himself. Now Prinplup and Grovyle have left the village confused even more about their true path.
In a battle with a wild Mightyena, Prinplup and Grovyle are knocked back by its powerful slash move.
"Man, that hurts," Prinplup said.
"This thing is tougher than I imagined," Grovyle responded.
"Giving up so easily, I expected a greater challenge," Mightyena replied.
"We don't get up that easily. Don't even think about getting the wrong idea," Grovyle responded.
"That's what I like to hear," Mightyena said, more enthusiastic than ever to continue the battle.
"Grovyle, I think it's time that we try out those team attacks. They could be our best chance at winning.
This time Prinplup and Grovyle rush back with Mightyena giving chase, attempting to slash them again, which this time they manage to dodge out of the way. Prinplup launches a bubble beam at Grovyle, which he deflects at Mightyena, while Prinplup launches his water gun at Mightyena. Prinplup then rushes up and starts striking Mightyena with his metal claw when Grovyle is starting to run out of bubbles, while Grovyle does the same but with his leaf blade.
Mightyena responds with his slash, which connects with the leaf blade and metal claw, but the combined strength of the two overwhelms Mightyena and he is knocked back. Mightyena, however, isn't fully down yet. He gets back up and pulls out a secret trick. He lights his mouth on fire and bites Grovyle with it, which he did not see coming at all and was not ready to counter. The move was super effective and hurt Grovyle badly.
Prinplup stood back from a distance, launching bubble beams at Mightyena, which Mightyena was able to destroy with his slash. Prinplup used this as a distraction, though, to circle around and confuse Mightyena long enough for Grovyle to recover. Grovyle now knew that Mightyena had a powerful and super-effective hit against him and he needed to be more careful as a result.
"I did not expect him to pull that out," Prinplup commented.
"Neither did I. That hurt really badly. I need to be more careful around him now," Grovyle responded.
"Don't I resist fire attacks? Perhaps we could use that to our advantage?"
"That is a good idea. You get close to him. I have my own plan."
Prinplup ran up to Mightyena, something which Mightyena saw as a rather bad decision. Prinplup got out his metal claw and continued clashing with Mightyena's slash. In the meantime, Grovyle was sneaking around, jumping around rocks, waiting for the perfect opening. Mightyena had taken some notice of this and was trying to keep track of Grovyle, but eventually lost him due to his fight with Prinplup. Grovyle used this opportunity to jump Mightyena, hitting him with a powerful leaf blade while Prinplup also hit him with his own metal claw, knocking Mightyena out.
Mightyena, after a bit, gets back up and says, "Good job you two. That was the best fight I have had in a while."
"Are you still sure you are okay with it being 2 against 1?" Prinplup asked.
"Honestly, it felt pretty fair to me."
"Well, that was a pretty fun fight, Mightyena. Thanks for this battle," Grovyle said.
"You two work quite well as a team. I am impressed. With those kinds of teamwork skills, you two could really make it."
"You aren't the first person to have said something like that," Prinplup replied.
"And I certainly won't be the last if you two keep this up."
"I just wish we could find more doubles so we could really test our skills," Grovyle commented.
"You know, I think I might be able to help you two with that," Mightyena replied.
"I'm interested," Grovyle said, extra intrigued to hear what Mightyena had for them.
"I know this duo of Pokémon that have been looking to do a double battle as well, I also know where to find them."
"We would definitely be interested in battling them," Grovyle responded.
"It's our first time doing this, so it will be quite a unique experience," Prinplup said.
After that, Mightyena started leading the two. They were heading towards a mountain where Mightyena said that these two Pokémon were living, which they found rather weird, but didn't really think much of it. The biggest thing Prinplup and Grovyle were wondering about is who these Pokémon were. Depending on who they are, it could massively influence how their battle goes due to type advantages.
"So Mightyena, are you going to tell us who these two are?" Grovyle asked.
"Why don't I leave that as a surprise?"
"I enjoy surprises, so I would like that idea," Prinplup responded.
"I just have to say first, they are rather energetic, for a lack of a better term," Mightyena responded.
"We will keep that in mind. We have dealt with worse than that," Grovyle commented.
The three continued walking up the mountain until they reached a cabin that was just sitting there.
"Well, this is the place," Mightyena said. The three walked inside to be greeted by Plusle and Minun. Both of them ran up to them, jumping up and down in excitement.
"Who are you two? Do you want to play with us?" Minun said while squealing.
"Did you bring us someone for us to play with Mightyena?" Plusle asked.
"Yeah, I found these two, Prinplup and Grovyle. They want to do a double battle as well, exactly what you have been looking for."
"It's the day we have been waiting for Minun. This is so exciting," Plusle said.
"I know this is amazing," Minun said while squealing in excitement.
"So what do you say, you two? Do you want to do it?" Mightyena asked.
"I don't see why not," Prinplup responded.
"Sure, I will do it," Grovyle responded.
"Thanks so much, you two," both Plusle and Minun said in unison.
Prinplup and Grovyle, along with Plusle and Minun, went outside. They climbed a bit higher to the top of the mountain, which was more open, so it gave them more room to fight. On the left side are Prinplup and Grovyle, and on the other side are Plusle and Minun, both of them talking about strategy and getting ready for the battle. Mightyena was the referee as well.
"Alright Prinplup, you need to be careful. These two are both electric types, which you are weak to, while I resist their attacks so I can tank more. We are now up against two opponents, so we need to make extra sure that neither of us gets knocked out," Grovyle said.
"We should try and use team attacks that don't put me at too much risk of getting damaged."
"That is a good idea."
"That match is about to start; everyone get ready." The four stop talking and get ready for Mightyena to initiate the battle. After a brief pause, he does so by saying, "Now let the battle begin."
Plusle and Minun start the battle off with an immediate thunderbolt aimed at Prinplup, which Prinplup is able to dodge out of the way. Grovyle gets out his leaf blade and rushes towards Plusle and Minun, dodging out of the way of every single thunderbolt and hitting Plusle. Minun attempts to counterattack, but while Minun is distracted, Prinplup launches a water gun at her.
It seemed like both of them were off to a great start, but Minun started shaking her hand, which Prinplup and Grovyle were confused by, but the answer came soon enough when Plusle launched another thunderbolt at Prinplup. Grovyle knew something was up with this, so he jumped in front of Prinplup to take the attack, but despite being resisted, it hurt badly.
"What kind of power was put into that thunderbolt?" Grovyle wondered.
"Did that hand movement have something to do with it?" Prinplup said.
"That is what we like to call a helping hand, a move that powers up the attack of the partner," Minun said.
Grovyle had been hit badly by that move and was barely able to stand up. Minun used another helping hand on Plusle and he used that to fire off another super charged thunderbolt at Prinplup, which he tried to dodge out of the way but wasn't able to and got knocked out.
"I forfeit," Grovyle said, knowing they had lost the battle.
Prinplup and Grovyle got back on their feet, they had lost the battle.
"Good game, you two; you presented us with quite a challenge; I guess we're not as good as we thought," Prinplup said.
"I did enjoy this. Maybe we can fight again some other time," Minun responded.
"I hope so as well," Plusle responded.
"Thanks for the battle you two. So Prinplup, we need to get going now. I sense some weather shift coming on this mountain." Following Grovyle's warning, the two begin to walk away, each with a new experience to draw on in future battles.
