He heard the sound of Jets screeching through the air as they flew overhead, and toward their target. His and a few other units were tasked with the taking of the mountain fortress Tubet, an obstacle on the road to the Kingdom of Elbe. They hoped to simply pass the Tubet fortress but soon found out the mountain range protecting Elbe and stiff resistance against the incoming US forces would in the end waste valuable time and resources, now they had to take the fortress to make the rangers' lives much more easier.
Even miles behind the front he could see the massive stone structure sticking out like a sore thumb, smoke bellowing out of sections that were blasted by air and artillery strikes. The forest at the base of the mountain had been utterly wiped off the map as intense bombing runs by planes equipped with incendiary bombs including white phosphorus had turned the once lush forest into a grayish hell were only the dead remaine.
But it seemed even after all that the Saderans wouldn't give up and it was found that no all of them had died and still held what was left of trenches and rudimentary earthworks and the battle had been raging for over a day now and they still kept on fighting.
"Hey Johnson." He turned around to his squamates hopping into a transport truck, "We're heading off to the front, let's go!" Yelled Collins was he waved he hand to come towards him.
"Coming sir!" He immediately dashed forward and with his superior pulling him up as the truck began its journey to the starting base.
-Two hours later
Micheal used a dead tree as cover as hailstorm of arrows came hailing down, he heard a yell which indicated someone had been hit. Somehow there was still Saderans that had survived the air strikes and with little cover left had mad what was supposed to be a relative walk in a park into slow crawl under arrow fire.
He had been separated from his squad half a hour ago and only had two objectives at the moment: survive and take the heights just behind the fortress where a trench line with crossbow wielding Elbans and Saderans occuping them, all whom would have to be taken out.
'Damn it!' He thought, 'I can't get a clear shot.' Despite being technologically inferior in every way they managed to surprisingly bring down enough arrows to slow their advance. "Throwing Smoke!" He turned his head to see a soldier on his left throw a smoke grenade, a second after it hit the ground it hissed as white smoke billowed out, soon others did the same and quickly the battlefield was covered like a blanket.
Without hesitation Johnson along with everyone else got out of cover and moved their way to the enemy trench. He could hear his heart beating in his ears and adrenaline continuesly pumping but he pressed on. Then as if the sun broke through the clouds he found himself at the edge of the trench and in front of a group of bewildered and stunned Saderans. Without hesitation he aimed his rifle and sprayed, killing them all.
At last they had taken the trench and the Saderans went into a panic, running away only to be gunned down mercilessly. Continuing their momentum the Americans pushed on relentlessly like hound dogs. Even as Saderan forces counterattacked or fired behind rocks or trees they couldn't be stopped.
But after a while the men got tired and called for reinforcements to press on their breakthrough while they hunkered down in what was left of a small village. Micheal looked at his watch as he sat down on the grass, it read 5:22PM but it felt much longer. While they had finally taken the first line of defense there was still another defensive line some two miles ahead of them and he still didn't know where the hell his squad was. They had all been separated after a massive bolder was sent flying at them to which they scattered.
Just as he was speculating what happened to his squad mates he heard a voice called out, "Johnson, there you are!" He thanked god as he saw Cork and the rest of the squad walked up to him, Cork and him having a quick hug. "The hell you've been?" Asked Collins as he opened his water container and took a refreshing sip.
"I joined up with some guys from company C." He said, "Im just glad ya'll are ok." "That good, because we got a job for ya." 'Oh for fuck sakes!'
Cereous 6th, 687 of the Imperial calendar
Piña made her way through the Alnus fort or what the Americans called 'Fort Cluster' to the medical ward for see needed to see a very important person. The princess meanwhile reflected on the recent events. It had been two months since the war had entered Falmart and the enemy's gains had been massive and calculating. They had taken most of the Alnus peninsula with only Elbe resisting as the kingdom's mountain range had slowed the advance but it was only a matter of time before the vassel fell.
It took her soon time to fully understand how dire the situation really was and despite promising them she'd help end the war was still a loyal Saderan at heart and in the back of her mind still hoped that the tide of war could still be turned.
The princess was also shocked on how little they really seemed to care about her status as a royal. She was expecting to essentially do everything herself except making food as they had cooks to cook and gave it to her in what they called a cafeteria. Her sleeping chamber was just a simply little room with a small bed, a window and a desk with a strange torch called a lamp that didn't require fire, just a pull of a string.
Piña was most shocked that they didn't have maids whatsoever for her, she had lived her life taken care by servants who pledged their lives and the lives of their children to care and protect the princess. She simply couldn't understand who a nation so powerful didn't have a set social hierarchy or a set lower class to do the labor, it simply was alien to her.
She pulled the glass door opened and walked up to a lady with brunette hair in a bun with the Americans' green uniform and matching cap. "Hello, I'd like to see King Duran. May you tell me where his chamber is?" She asked in the American language called English, she had taken classes and wasn't too bad at it.
"He's in room thirteen on your right." She explained. The princess gave her thanks and continued her way through the building. She had thanked the Gods when she found out that Duran was still alive and had actually been in the care of the Americans this whole time but she had been unable to visit him due to him being in a coma. That changed when she was informed he had finally awaken and wasted no time to speak with him.
She wanted answers, she wanted to convince him to except peace and she wanted to know why this war that claimed so many lives even started but froze when she came mere inches from it. The young princess felt hesitant but she wouldn't let it stop her.
'This is no time to be indecisive!' She scolded herself, 'My questions must be answered.' With deep breath, she turned the door knob and opened the door. It was like she had opened up to the clouds, everything was white except the small emerald flower pot with a beautiful daisy in it. The old man opened his eye to see her and looked quite shocked, "So they have captured you as well?" She couldn't help but find that a tad funny, "No, I have not. I came at my own will."
The redhead took a wooden chair and placed it by his bed before sitting down herself. "W-what happened when I was in slumber?" He asked, looking around the room. "The Americans as they call themselves have taken Debis and Italica as well as most of the peninsula. All but Elbe and Mordon have capitulated, Im happy to say they've been treated very well and have given those who have surrendered have been given Mercy."
From his facial expression it seemed he wasn't very interested, "Princess Piña, if you'll come to convince me to surrender then you're playing a fool's game." "But you must! They're unlike we'll ever fought before and if we don't end this now then the Empire will collapse." But the bedridden king smiled, "I've already made my choice, I have no Intention of fighting the Other worlds but rather ally with them." She was rather shocked, the Elbian had lost half of its total strength at the second battle of Alnus and instead of simply leaving the conflict the King wanted to switch sides.
"Elbe has been loyal for centuries, my forefathers were the best this world could offer but were nothing more then pawns. I watched my friends who I knew since boyhood slaughtered by a foe we couldn't see and the mangled carrion of my people scattered across the battlefield. I sacrificed my arm and leg for nothing!" He kept his composure but his voice got more angry as time progressed, the princess started to understand just how much of a waste their sacrifice had been. It was then she realized the Allied army wasn't sent to push the Americans back but rather give the Empire time to regain strength.
"As much as I would like to see your father pay, I have no grievances with you children but you must know that I and my Kingdom must have vengeance for the treachery enacted by the Saderan empire. Now please, let me rest." And with that he closed his eyes and she silently left the room without reassurance but rather doubts about the survival of Sadera.
