Matt did have a nightmare, Azalea stayed with him until he went to sleep again. In the morning, as she made breakfast, she felt her phone buzz in her pocket.
Where are you? I tried your house but no answer. Need to talk, can you meet me?
It was from Elena. Writing a note to the Donavan's explaining why she left and that there was food in the oven. She left quietly.
I'm heading back now. Met at my house in about 10 minutes.
I hit send and began to walk.
9.43.
She wondered what was so urgent that Elena needed to speak with her this time on a Saturday. Didn't normal teenagers sleep longer than this? Azalea saw the brunette on her porch sitting in the chair she had gotten, when the Elena saw her she got up and smiled.
"Lea hey,"
"Hi, why don't we go inside," she said unlocking the door and gesturing for her to go inside.
"Where were you?" she asked as Azalea went to the kitchen to make a coffee.
"At Matt's – Just as a friend," she said at the teens shocked face. "He found Tanner, I wanted to be there for him."
"That's was good of you. Matt's a good friend." Elena said, smiling gratefully as Azalea give her the mug.
"You bought an American one," Elena smiled taking a sip.
"I'll get a Virginia one too I think." Azalea said.
"We could go travelling in Fall break." Elena said.
"Sounds good, around the states in 50 days."
Elena laughed.
"So what was so urgent that it couldn't wait until this afternoon?"
"Well I saw you leave with Bonnie, she was freaked out, I wanted to say thank you for that."
"No problem." She looked at her. Waiting.
"And…" she paused. "Can I ask you something?" she asked, placing the mug on the table.
"Couse, what's up?"
"Stefan, he's hiding something," she said frowning.
"Well forcing it out of him won't help, there are something that people don't like to talk about that kind of stuff, like the way my horror film of a past was forced out of me, you lot didn't know I didn't have a guardian with me until then. Everyone has a past, some are darker than others. Give him time he'll open up more and more, and if you're meant to be you'll eventually want to know everything about him."
"You should be a councillor or a novelist." Elena laughed. "Thanks Lea, you've helped."
"I'm glad," she said smiling.
"We get the week off school to mourn. Well, except for at least one trip to the councillor's office to talk about it."
"How do we know when to go?" Azalea asked, knowing she wouldn't be excluded.
"It will be on our school email by 5 tonight. Azalea nodded then sighed.
"Want another?" she said reaching for the cup.
"Yeah sure," she said smiling softly.
"Memories?" the redhead guessed as she made the way to the kettle.
"Yeah, I can't imagine for you and Matt. I mean you saw the bodies."
"Yeah,"
"You sound alright?" she said a small frown on her face.
"I've seen a lot of dead – not enough to be used to it." She added hastily, not looking at the brunette focusing on her water boiling. "But Tanner… he wasn't… I didn't know him. Most the bodies I have seen… They have been loved ones, and every time was as bad as the time before. But Tanner, or anyone else I barely know, or dislike… it's just a body. A soulless shell…"
Azalea snapped out of her voiced thoughts turning to see Elena's horrified expression.
"Sorry, I'm probably freaking you out a bit." Azalea had to give it to her, she composed herself rather well.
"No, no, just I am surprised how honest your being. I like it. Everyone says what they think should, but people deserve the truth, and you deserve to be able to tell the truth."
Azalea grabbed the two mugs and headed back to her sitting room.
"Let's talk about something more fun." she said brightly handing Elena her coffee.
Elena grinned and the two girls began to discuss the idea of a party at the end of the week.
Azalea was painting in the room upstairs, she gently dabbed at the corner of the full moon. Her eye glanced to Remus howling below it. She could almost see the whomping willow thrashing in protest.
She smiled.
Knock, knock.
Checking the time, she rushed down the stairs.
"Jeremy," she said as she opened the door.
"Hey Lea, I was wondering if I could hang out here for a bit?"
"Of course," she gestured for him to come through, she was very cautious of welcoming people to her home these days.
He walked through, he looked at the redhead and smiled.
"What?"
"You got a little paint there," he touched his own temple. Azalea walked over to the mirror to see a navy blue smudge.
"I was painting upstairs, lost track of time, so what do you want to talk about?"
"Tanner… We're meant to go see councillors –"
"Jere, I'm no substitute for a professional."
"I've seen one before." He said. "When Mom and Dad died, Elena and I were forced to see people. They didn't know what they were talking about… they couldn't empathise like you can."
She sighed.
"If I tell you to see someone, will you?"
"I'll give it a go," he said. She nodded sitting down, and taking a note book.
"So how do you feel today Jeremy," she teased scribbling on the sheet.
"Knock it off," he laughed, giving her a little shove.
The next morning, she turned on the news to see there has been a mountain lion killed as it had attacked a hundred people.
Damon. She growled throwing her mug across the room; sighing when it shattered.
"Repario," she mumbled, as though hitting the reverse button it fixed itself together. She then accioed it and put in a teabag.
Maybe he'd be careful from now on, if he was covering his tracks like that. But that probably meant he was going to stay longer. She sighed again dreading the next time she saw the mass murderer.
The memorial service was today, she had seen Elena and Jeremy leave the house. But she was not going. She didn't know the man. She didn't like the man, he did not like her. As soon as she knew the street was empty, she threw more Floo powder into the fire she stuck her head in.
"Malfoy Manor," she said. Her head twirling and spinning through the green flame she found herself in a large hall of a sitting room, with Draco Malfoy at the fire place reading. When he saw her he raised an eyebrow.
"Hi," she said.
"Hey Potter," he said a small smile on his lips as he knelt by the fire. "How's Muggle America?" he drawled.
"Found some vampires and a channel witch." She said in a matter-of-fact way, but she burst into laughter as the sophisticated pureblood sat up straight with alarm on his face.
"Tell me you're joking, Azalea, for the sake of Merlin tell me you're joking,"
"Nope, one of the vampires are in my High School," she said still grinning; the blonde shook his head in half exasperation the other half amusement.
"Be careful, I know it is pointless to say stay out of trouble. So be careful, when you get into your ridiculous nonsense,"
"I care about you too, Draco," she said warmly. "Imagine if someone told me I'd say that to you three years ago.
"I'd have cursed them," he said arrogantly.
She laughed.
"It's amazing what a clear up of a war will do to a relationship. See you later Draco I've got to go make food. I'm throwing a party tonight for the Muggles I am making friends with."
"Really Potter?"
"Their teacher just died, and the memorials today. I thought it would be nice."
"So you decide a party where they cannot legally drink is the way to go?" he drawled.
"Shut it ferret." She grumbled. She pulled her head from the fire and made her way back to her sitting room. Shaking her head she made her way to the kitchen. He was still a prat, but at least now he was amusing.
Removing her flour and sauce stained apron she smiled at her cupcakes, brownies, the tomato, basil, garlic, cheese and mushroom pasta, the scones, steak, homemade chips (fries) and finally a salad bowl with various bottled sauces beside it.
Bell rings.
She opened the door to see everyone had arrived.
"Hey guys come on in," she said looking at Stefan.
"Wow, your house is so pretty." Caroline said as she looked around the sitting room.
"And you painted all of these?" Bonnie said.
"Yeah," Azalea could feel her cheeks warm.
"You must be loaded." Caroline said.
"Caroline!" Elena and Bonnie snapped.
"What?"
"It's fine, help yourself to food." She gestured to the counter.
"Wow," Tyler headed over grabbing some steak.
"You made all of this," Elena gasped, grabbing one of the decorated cupcakes.
"I like to cook, I find it relaxing." The redhead said taking a chip and eating it. "So I've never been to a house party, what should we do?"
"I brought this," Matt said rummaging into his bag and grabbing a black carboard box. The other teens grinned.
"Er, guys what's cards against humanity?" the redhead frowned at the box.
Lea began to make her way upstairs to quickly check on a potion that she had been brewing, she noticed Tyler outside her art draw twisting the knob.
"What are you doing?" she demanded rushing over to him moving between him and the door.
"Looking for the bathroom," he lied.
"It's there," she said pointing to it.
"Oh thanks," he muttered heading inside.
The party was beginning to relax every was in the kitchen nibbling on various bits of food.
"I think I am going to have to head home," Matt said, "I need to check on Vicki."
"Yeah, I think I should go back too," Bonnie said. "I'll drive you home,"
"Can I get a lift with you Bonnie," Tyler said.
"Yeah sure."
"Looks like we are all going home," Elena smiled nibbling on a salsa chip. Everyone began to grab their stuff.
"It was great having you all here. It was good to get to know you a little more."
"Thank you, for setting this up for us," Elena said.
"No problem," Lea smiled, she noticed Caroline was taking longer to pack things up. She frowned but ignored it for now.
Once everyone was gone Caroline spoke to her.
"So, I was wondering if you'd want to help me plan a Fall break trip for everyone. It would give us a chance to talk you know." She smiled. "I wanted to get to know you better, so I thought why not, you know. So… wanna have a catch up, just you and me." she said smiling, Azalea smiled back, she knew this was compulsion, Damon was asking her to do this, and the vampire knew that she knew, he was playing her. He wanted information, if she didn't give it then Caroline wouldn't be of use to him anymore and he'd kill her.
"Sure Care, come round tomorrow sometime, we will do some planning."
"Can't wait," she said clapping her hands together and rushing off, probably to tell Damon. Azalea took out her phone and called Stefan.
"He's using Caroline to get information about me," she spluttered down the phone as she heard him answer.
"Whoa, slow down, what's happened?"
"Damon's using Caroline to know my secrets," she said a little calmer this time.
"Lea don't –"
"I have to Stefan, he knows I know, so he knows that I know what he'll do to Caroline if I don't give her enough information. Besides now he has a use for her it gives us more time to find a way to stop him." She could hear the vampire sigh, knowing she was right.
"I'll see you tomorrow Stefan," she sighed hanging up the phone.
The next day Caroline showed up around midday, the redhead invited her in. They talked about heading to some popular beach for a little while before Caroline began to grill her about her life. She enjoyed chatting to Caroline despite knowing that the information she gave would make its way back to Damon. She made sure not to divulge too much into certain aspects of her life when Caroline asked her a question. About three hours was a knock on the door.
"Oh I'll just go to the bathroom," Caroline walked upstairs. Snoop for him all you want, all the doors are locked, she thought. She opened the door the see the raven headed vampire leaning against the wood.
"Could I come in?" he said sweetly he did something with his eyes that would make a stranger melt into him, but she knew better.
"No," she spat harshly. "Sorry no vampires allowed. Nice trick with Caroline, she has some information for you. Keep her alive and she'll get some more. Kill her and well you'll have me to deal with."
"Oooh, scary human," he mocked. "Come outside and say that."
"And reveal all my secrets, I don't think so." she said making sure it sounded mysterious.
He sniffed the air.
"Why do you smell so delicious? Is that something to do with your little threats?"
"Sorry Caroline has to be here for a few months before you get that one."
"Or I could just kill her now,"
"Then you'll never know," she hissed.
Caroline came to the door.
"I'm ready,"
"Fantastic, let's get dinner I'm starving." He said licking his lips, Azalea openly glared.
"Just remember Damon, I'm new, I haven't known anyone very long. I'd be sad, but hey 5 weeks of whatever isn't really enough time to know someone. I hold the court. You'll learn what I want you to and if you do kill her you'll learn nothing else. Are we clear?"
"Crystal," he said smirking grabbing Caroline's arm and dragging her away. She slammed the door hating that she had to let Caroline go with him. She grabbed some books and grumbling under her breath began to study.
