Chapter 517 Fire

Scarlett should have known there would be one more hurdle they would face, but a fire alarm? It was just crazy. It kind of served Jax right though for getting that fire extinguisher.

"We have a couple of options," Scarlett said over the screaming of the fire alarm.

"OK," Jax yelled over the alarm. "Let's hear them."

"We can go back to my condo or we can go to a motel," Scarlett said deciding to have a little fun teasing him.

"Those are the options? That's it?"

"Well, my father does have a ladder in the garage and an organizer thing with all kinds of batteries out there too. I think it takes a 9 volt."

"Couldn't have told me that first?" Jax asked raising an eyebrow.

"Where's the fun in that?" she asked grinning. She went to the security system keypad located just inside the master bedroom door and disarmed the security system.

"I'll be right back," Jax said.

"Don't worry. I won't go anywhere."

To pass the time, Scarlett turned down the bed.

Jax came in carrying the ladder. She watched him climb the ladder admiring the way his jeans tightened on his body as he moved up the ladder. He was just so intensely male. She shivered a little inside. She'd never been with a man as packed with virility as Jax Teller. Two college boyfriends and a psycho ex weren't much to compete against, but it would be a rare man who could compete with a man as sexy as Jax. If you added charm and intelligence into the mix, he was the unicorn of men.

Jax twisted the cover off the smoke detector, disconnected the old battery. The alarm system still shrieked. Apparently they were made to keep sounding until the battery was replaced. Simply removing the battery didn't silence the alarm. Jax put in the new battery and then blissful quiet.

"All that alarm noise gave me a headache," Scarlett complained looking at Jax from the bed.

Jax looked down at Scarlett from the ladder.

"You really have a headache?"

She nodded solemnly biting the insides of her cheeks to keep from laughing at the look of dismay on Jax's face. She watched as he climbed down from the ladder. Yeah, still sexy climbing down from the ladder. Soon, he was really going to be hers.

"I'll be right back after I put this away and we'll be discussing this headache of yours," he said with mock sternness.

Scarlett avoided looking at Jax because she knew she would start laughing if she looked at him. She didn't think he was buying the headache excuse. She doubted any woman would give Jax Teller the headache excuse.

When he returned, she rearmed the security system while he took off his shoes. She closed and locked the bedroom door. Security precautions were automatic.

He was already in bed waiting for her.

"Now about this headache of yours . . ." Jax said reaching for her as she got into bed.

"All gone," she said grinning.

She could see the special way Jax's blue eyes softened when he looked at her and she knew how much he loved her. Now, he was going to show her as long as nothing else went wrong.

Author's Note: Haven't decided how to write the next chapter. Do I pick it up after sex or before or do I write in an earthquake and delay Jax and Scarlett again? I'm taking a small break as I wrap up Taming Ava. Decisions. Decisions.
