A/N: This is the first of an undefined amout of one-shots I'm going to post here. This is basically my dumping groung for random nonsense ideas I had, so don't expect too much. You're always welcome to leave comments though.
I found this as I was going through old documents. I have no idea what it was supposed to become but I think it works as a one-shot. And yes, I'm aware this one has an odd style, I was trying something new...
Enjoy! :)
Don't Let Go
Qui-Gon woke with a start as the screams of his Padawan echoed through his mind. Haunting him. He knew that he wouldn't be able to endure this for much longer. "Where are you?" he whispered helplessly. It had been a week since Obi-Wan went missing and Qui-Gon had no idea where he could be. He spent every waking hour chasing down leads that always lead him to dead ends.
"Don't let go!" Qui-Gon shouted over the noise of transports speeding overhead. He looked into the eyes of his 15-year-old Padawan as he held on for dear life. But Qui-Gon felt his grip on the young boy's hand slip.
Qui-Gon let out a long breath he hadn't realised he had been holding. He knew he wouldn't be able to sleep anymore, so he swung his legs over the side of his bed and got up. And thus, another day of hopeful searching started. Obi-Wan was still alive, Qui-Gon was sure of it, but for how much longer? He didn't know. Every day he awoke with the hope that it would be the day he finally found his lost Padawan. He clung to that hope like a lifeline.
Qui-Gon could hear their pursuers gaining on them. Soon blaster fire would rain down on them and he had no means to deflect it. They were completely exposed. Qui-Gon couldn't get to his lightsaber without letting go of his Padawan. And that was something he would never do. He had caught Obi-Wan's hand as he was pulled over the railing. Qui-Gon stood on the roof, Obi-Wan hanging mid-air, a 300m drop below. They were caught in a stalemate.
Qui-Gon's commlink flashed and he didn't hesitate in activating it. "Qui-Gon" he heard Tahl say "we found the ship. Xan-5. I'm sending you the coordinates now." It was the best news he'd heard all week. He was finally a step closer to finding Obi-Wan. He ended the call with a "thank you" before racing out of the room he had rented for the evening. He slung his bag over his shoulder as he called for an airtaxi to take him to the landing platform. From there he would find transport to Xan-5.
Obi-Wan could hear their pursuers approaching as well. He could feel the cable that had wrapped its self around his ankle tighten as Qui-Gon tried to pull him back over the railing. He felt Qui-Gon grip slip slightly as the cable gave another tug, pulling him further away from the roof. He saw the determination in his Master's blue eyes as he tightened his grip again. He knew that sooner or later something would give in, he just hoped it would be the cable.
He watched the planet surface as the ship made its approach. Xan-5 was an industrial planet, its atmosphere filled with the smoke that rose from the many factories that covered the planet. Looking out of the view screen Qui-Gon felt for the first time that he was finally on the right track. Obi-Wan was here. He knew it. But why of all places would he be here? And how would Qui-Gon find him?
"Can you reach your lightsaber?" Qui-Gon asked, as his mind worked. Obi-Wan reached for his lightsaber, that was attached to his belt, with his free hand. Just then the cable pulled on his ankle again. Obi-Wan let his gaze follow the cable to a speeder parked on a lower roof about 50m away. There was a man next to the speeder watching him intently before turning to get into the speeder. Obi-Wan had no doubt he had shot the cable that threatened to pull him to his death. "Padawan. Try to cut the cable" Qui-Gon said, pulling Obi-Wan's attention away from the man.
Qui-Gon crossed the landing platform to meet the young mechanic waiting for him. He was human, with short dark hair and crystal-blue eyes. He took one look at the Jedi Master and then motioned for him to follow. "This is the ship you were looking for," he said gesturing to an old starship. Qui-Gon immediately recognised it, it was the ship his Padawan had been kidnapped with. He thanked the mechanic and he left to return to his work, leaving Qui-Gon to search the starship for clues. It was a small ship with barely any room for cargo. It was only designed for two passengers, a pilot and a co-pilot. Qui-Gon searched the entire ship and didn't find a single helpful clue. The only thing he found was blood on the co-pilot seat. Blood he knew belonged to Obi-Wan.
Qui-Gon heard blaster fire and turned to see the security officers of Jesna Industries, the building they were currently on the roof of, heading towards them. Their chances of escaping were getting lower with every passing second. He looked back at Obi-Wan who was trying to reach the cable with his lightsaber but failing.
Qui-Gon sat in the pilot seat and closed his eyes. He focused on the Force, trying to reach out to his Padawan. He was close, he could feel it. "Help me Obi-Wan, where are you?" Qui-Gon opened his eyes as he was struck with a thought. He got out his commlink and contacted Tahl. "Jesna Industries, do they have a factory on Xan-5?" he asked.
"You think Jesna Industries is behind the kidnapping?" Tahl replied. "It's possible." There was a pause whilst Tahl searched though some datafiles. "There are 10" she finally said solemnly.
A blaster bolt rushed past Qui-Gon's right ear, missing him by an inch. "This isn't working" Obi-Wan said, he could see the struggle in his Master's eyes as he was forced to rethink his escape plan. That was when Obi-Wan realised what he had to do. "Let go"
It was a long shot, but Qui-Gon had a feeling Jesna Industries was behind Obi-Wan's kidnapping. And if he had to, he would search every inch of all 10 factories.
When he got to the 4th he knew he was in the right place.
"What?" Qui-Gon asked in disbelief, he must have heard incorrectly. But Obi-Wan's face was serious.
"You have to let me go. If you don't, we both die here."
Qui-Gon shook his head and tightened his grip on Obi-Wan's hand so that it was almost painful. "I won't let go." Another blaster bolt narrowly missed Qui-Gon, he knew it wouldn't be long before one hit its mark, but he wasn't going to let Obi-Wan go.
Cautiously Qui-Gon opened the main door to the factory. Just like the other three he had been to it was crowded with workers. The large hall was filled with the noise of machines running at full power. No one took notice of him as he made his way across the hall, scanning the area for any clue of where Obi-Wan could be. He stopped at a door on his left. The Force was practically screaming at him. He had found it.
Obi-Wan felt like he was being pulled apart. He knew that he wasn't likely to free himself before the security officers got close enough. He accepted that he wasn't likely to survive this, but he wouldn't let Qui-Gon sacrifice himself, besides, someone had to get the datafile they stole back to the Temple or it would have been for nothing. "I'm sorry" He said as he let go of Qui-Gon's hand.
Qui-Gon's eyes widened in shock "No", but it was too late, Obi-Wan slipped from his grasp. As he fell Qui-Gon only saw acceptance in his Padawan's blue-grey eyes.
The door was locked. Qui-Gon used his lightsaber to cut through lock allowing him to push open the door. He slipped through, making sure he didn't attract any attention. The workers were so busy they didn't notice. Behind the door he was faced with a flight of stairs heading to a basement.
Out of nowhere a speeder flew by and caught Obi-Wan mid-air and joined the traffic overhead. Qui-Gon realised then that the man who had been standing on the other roof and his speeder were no longer there. The security officers had finally caught up with him, he immediately activated his lightsaber to deflect the blaster bolts. He manoeuvred towards the speeder he and Obi-Wan were originally planning on escaping with. He jumped in and raced off after the speeder he had seen Obi-Wan disappear into. He followed the speeder all the way to a landing platform where he had to watch a man dressed all in black drag an unconscious Obi-Wan Kenobi into his ship and take off, leaving only the speeder and Obi-Wan's lightsaber behind.
. . .
Obi-Wan slowly opened his eyes, he couldn't see anything in the darkness that surrounded him. He only felt the cool metal of the floor against his cheek. He felt a dull pain at the back of his head. He hissed as his fingers found the source of the pain. His hair felt damp and he was fairly sure the wound on his head was bleeding. He must have been hit pretty hard. He couldn't remember where he was or how he got there. But he was sure that once again he had got himself in trouble. He only hoped that Qui-Gon was looking for him.
Just as his eyes had finally got used to the darkness, the door opened, filling the room with bright light. Obi-Wan had to close his eyes to not be blinded. Before he knew what was happening, he was roughly dragged out of the room he had been in into another. He scanned the new room and instantly decided the other one was more welcoming.
This room was bright white, there was a table in the middle that he was tied to by two men. He couldn't see their faces and once they had completed their job they left, leaving Obi-Wan alone. He glanced around the room again, noticing various tools and instruments. The room suddenly reminded him of an operating theatre. He swallowed hard, he wasn't liking where this was going.
He looked at the door when two men entered. One was dressed in white, he looked like a healer although Obi-Wan questioned how much healing he was going to do. The other was dressed in black and Obi-Wan recognised him. He had seen him on the roof. Suddenly his memory started coming back to him.
"Now, we can do this the easy way or the hard way," the man dressed in black said. He looked to be in his forties and he had a scar that ran across his left eye. "I just have a few questions" he continued. Obi-Wan didn't reply. "Why were you at Jesna Industries?"
Obi-Wan knew what his disobedience would cost him, but he called on all the courage he could muster and met the man's stare without saying a word. The man's mouth twisted into a menacing grin. "The hard way then."
He stepped aside, bringing the other man into view. He looked younger but most of his face was covered by a mask. He moved to the table that had various instruments arranged on it. He glanced at Obi-Wan as he made his decision on which one to use.
"My friend here is an expert in torture. He knows how to cause the most agonising pain without risking your life, that way I don't have to worry about getting my information." The man in black said, "are you sure you don't want to rethink your strategy?"
Obi-Wan remained silent. The man stepped back to let his "friend" work. "He's all yours Tep."
The man Obi-Wan assumed was Tep, nodded his understanding. Obi-Wan wondered whether he ever talked. But that question was the least of his troubles. Tep eyed the clear liquid in the syringe he held before injecting it into Obi-Wan's neck. He felt it spread through his veins like fire. His heart pounded against his chest as it pumped the liquid around his body. He broke out into a sweat as every muscle seemed to tremble.
. . .
Qui-Gon snuck down the corridor at the end of the stairs and just managed to pull himself back when he turned a corner and saw two men. Carefully, he looked around the corner again. The men were carrying something which they threw into a room before locking the door and walking away again.
Qui-Gon felt his heart drop when he realised that the men hadn't been carrying something but someone.
He made his way to the door and without much thought, he cut a hole in it. The room was pitch black, but with the light streaming in from outside he could make out the body sprawled on the floor.
Kneeling down beside what he was certain was his Padawan, Qui-Gon turned him over. Obi-Wan was so pale that Qui-Gon almost didn't dare take a pulse.
"Obi-Wan?" Qui-Gon prompted quietly.
To his surprise they boy's eyelids fluttered lightly. "Master?" he mumbled without opening his eyes.
"Yes, I'm here, Padawan." Qui-Gon felt relief as he carefully lifted the boy up to take him to safety.
"Didn't tell…"
Qui-Gon't heart clenched, "I know, Padawan. You were very brave. We're going home."
Obi-Wan's body relaxed into Qui-Gon's hold slightly as he drifted off into unconsciousness again.
"Don't let go," he whispered.
