In a land far, far away lies the kingdom of Fiore, a small, peaceful nation of 17 million, and a place filled with Magic found in every home, bought and sold in every marketplace. For most, Magic is merely a tool, a mundane part of everyday life. For some, however, Magic is an art, and they've devoted their lives to its practice. These are the wizards. Banded together into magical guilds, they ply their skills in search of fame and fortune. Many such guilds dot the landscape of Fiore. But there is a certain guild in a certain town that soars high above the rest, one from which countless legends have been born. A guild that will no doubt continue to create legends well into the future. Its name...is Fairy Tail.

The backdrop is white but to Dazzler none of that matters. She still shines like the day is young with her top hat in a cute little headband, her lips violet, and her button vest traded in for an off-the-shoulders top. She bows slightly to the camera then waves. "Hi, everyone, I'm Dazzler Lafayette and I'm the first Fairy Tail Guild Magician."

The camera pans to her side as she says, "This is that story."

Fairy Adventure 043

This is That Story

Dazzler shakes out her mane of black hair and sparkles comes out. A crewmember off to the side chuckles in awe and of shock, "Is that normal?"

Dazzler looks at the sparkles around her. A giggle escapes her. "Even a Magician standard? No."

• — • — • — • — • — • — • — • — •

Today, we've asked Dazzler to tell us the story of her becoming the first Fairy Tail Magician.

• — • — • — • — • — • — • — • — •

Dazzler lets out a shuttering exhale. "Okay, so… For those of you who don't know, a Magician is basically a person with Magic, but we don't specialize in a type of Magic and we have to use Magic Instruments to facilitate our Magic like…"—she bops her top hat and it enlarges, popping off her head; she catches it and easily pulls out a rabbit—"this!"

The rabbit poofs at her command and she twirls her top hat to shape it back into a headband. "So I had wanted to be a Magician since before I could talk, it seemed. My dad Robert Lafayette was one of the most famous Magicians there was. He was…honestly one of the bravest and quirkiest men I've ever known and loved. You never knew if it was Magic or tricks with him, y'know?"

Wistfulness enters her eyes. "I think I was about…eight when I remember one of the best shows I've seen him perform and to this day, I don't understand how he did it. You guys remember his show in the states? He was Los Vega and he brought me along with him and my cousins Circe and Trivia and my uncle Copper. Come to think of it…" She bops her headband back into a top hat. With a wrinkle of her nose, she taps her hat. "C'mon, c'mon, get some good reception… Ah!" She beams and shows the inside of her top hat. A screen has appeared and she shows it to the camera. "Here! Take a look for yourself!"

The screen shows a broad man in his shirt with the top buttons undone and his top hat twirling around between his hands. The sound is muted as he animatedly speaks to the crowd while his assistants gathered about with their props.

"My dad always liked to end the night with a grand finale," Dazzler explains as Robert spreads his arm, top hat in hand. "This show… It was unbelievable!" She pulls back the hat to watch as a countdown ensues. She bites her lip in excitement as the entire audience begins to panic. Water floods the entire auditorium with guests trying whichever means possible to escape it. But it is to no avail. While his assistants look collected, one was trying hard not to panic.

Dazzler laughs. "Dad had this funny way with his assistants. Every show, he'd tell all but one what the grand finale trick was." She watches as the focus is overturned in the water. People are choking, trying hard to swim to the surface…

but then Robert, who is happily floating along, begins to talk to the people as though to soothe them.

The people hear his voice and stop their floundering about. Witnessing the assistants being calm, they begin to take their breaths. Some even start laughing, whether it is from anxiety or happiness, no one will know.

"I'm still confused about how he did it." Dazzler makes her hat back into a headband. "He made breathable water! Not even Water Mages can do that!" She coughs. "Anyways, seeing that and experiencing it firsthand was what inspired me to become a Magician like my dad.

"It's not like I didn't have Magic to begin with," she quickly corrected. "How a Mage and Magician find out they can use their ether is pretty similar. Magician's call it the 'Awakening'. Prior to ten years old, Mages of all kinds normally show bouts of accidental Magic that's linked with their emotions like making it rain when they cry or levitating things when angry. There are late bloomers though," she was quick to add. "My Awakening was by complete accident. I started getting so hyped overseeing a movie and…"—she shook out her hands and sparkles and mini-fireworks appeared—"viola! I was a Magician!"

"Can you explain how you know you were a Magician and not a Mage?" comes disembodied question.

"Great question!" Dazzler pointed out. "Everyone has ether inside them. That's a fact. Using that ether is often exhausting or difficult. A Mage can instantly be snuffed out through their Magic Circle just like and Alchemic Circle or Alkahest Circle. There's a Magician Circle too."

The screen cuts to a montage with Mages showing off their Magic Circles for their spells. It shows the scene of Peter igniting his Circle for the first time. Then it cuts to Andele showing her Alkahest Circle as she heals a wounded Mage.

"For rudimentary Magic Spells like unlocking doors or simply summoning spells, a Magic Circle isn't needed," Dazzler explains. "But, for bigger spells, a Magic Circle is conjured. Since Magicians predominantly use rudimentary Magic, we don't necessarily have Magic Circles. But, when we do, every Magician has the same Magic Circle of a five-pointed star. If you're a Shifter, your Circle has the animal you can shapeshift into."

"Isn't Elvin a Shifter?" comes another question.

"He is, but he's a Mage.' Dazzler quickly explains to avoid confusion, "Morphers can only transition into one other animal. They don't have the ability to transfer into multiple animals. And, say a shifter did, they can't use Magic. Councilman Wolfheim and Elvin are Shifters, but they are Mages because they can use their Magic in those forms. A Magician Shifter is strictly that animal and can't do much as else outside the Laws of Nature." She flips her hair. "I feel like I'm explaining Magicianhood to everyone here," she laughs.

"Back to my story," she continues. "My dad was super proud I was a Magician and enrolled me in with my cousins at Kyselica School for Witchcraft and Wizardry just like he and my uncle went to. We were legacies there, so it was…" She tries to find the word. "It was stressful. Don't get me wrong—I loved my school—but it was easy to see who the fake friends were and who actually wanted to be with me because I was me. I stuck closely to Trivia and Circe during those years." A frown mars her features. "But I also met one Hell of an asshole who was a former…friend." She blinks away memories. "Anyways, when it comes to Magicianry, a Magic Instrument is needed for Magicians to use their Magic. In the Lafayette family, none of us use wands. Circe uses a staff, Trivia, I think, uses an umbrella. I started out using my own top hat."

She points at her top hat headband. "This one is actually my father's top hat. When he died, that's when I inherited it."

She proceeds: "Magician School is versatile and tries to play to a Magician's attitude. There are different houses on campus sorted through aptitude after your first year. There's the Shifter House for those who can transform into one animal who we call a Morpher or can transform parts of their bodies into things; the Esper House for the all the psychic and telekinetic and illusionist kids; the Element House for those who have Magic geared towards the elements; the Healing House for those who want or have closer talents to medicine and herbalism; and the Knowledge House which is what I was put in and Circe. Trivia is an Esper. Our house could be looked at in two ways: you had an aptitude for everything or for nothing. It was the house my dad was in, actually. I had an aptitude for pretty much everything from Transformation Spells to fortune-telling to…"—she claps her hands and lets them split with cards flying out—"Card Magic."

Dazzler reaches over for her water. "So, we went through typical Magician things. We learned about the history of Magic, different types of Mages, we learned broom-riding, transformation, defense against the Dark Arts, blah blah blah… Honestly, I think, from a history-wise, Magicians, Alchemists, and Alkahests learn more about that then Mages." She takes a sip.

"Why do you say that?"

"Mmm." Dazzler finishes her sip. "Don't misunderstand me and I don't want Mages coming out for me," she chuckles. "Mages are extremely powerful and the history of some of their Magic types is legendary. Such as Dragon Slayer or Devil Slayer or Celestial Spirit Magic. Schools can't really teach that. But Mages more often than not learn about their specific Magic history instead of the depth of Magic as a whole, y'know?"

She shakes her head. "Anyways, back to me. Um, so, yeah, went through classes, caused some mischief, managed some mischief…" Her eyes darkened. "I guess everything changed…when my dad died."

Articles labeling ROBERT LAFAYETTE pile one over the other onto the screen. News channels pop up as they broadcast the funeral march. A teenaged Dazzler stands shielded by Fairy Tail Mages and glued to her uncle's side, a black veil cloaking her face.

"My dad was famous and infamous," Dazzler tells. "Magicians find those who use sleight-of-hand to be insulting. My dad loved being a Stage Magician since you never knew what was Magic and what wasn't. He had incredible skill that he was even offered to become headmaster of my school. He turned it down to keep touring. Of course, he came to visit me and I spent all my holidays with him on the Enchanted Estate, but after that…" A choke is heard in her voice. "Everyone in school pitied me for it. Telling me how great a loss it was for him to be gone from the Magic Community. The Magician Minister and the Magic Chairman both visited me when the will was read. It just felt…so surreal… It still does, y'know? He was one of the greatest Magicians alive and he's just…gone…"

Dazzler tries to clear the scratch in her voice. "I'm not proud of what happened after that. I was barely in school. I stayed in the Enchanted State. Did some jobs I shouldn't have and barely spoke with my family. I banished them from the property. But then…someone came to the door… It was Master Erza. I refused to let her inside, so she talked to me from the other side of the door. She told me…she was there at his funeral for his service to the guild. He had an offer to join, but he turned it down since he didn't want to belong in a guild. She slipped me her card and told me to let her know when I was ready to talk.

"Fast forward. I left the estate and finished school to get my GMED. I didn't really want to into anything, so I teamed up with my former best friend. I went into Stage Magic like my dad. Performed and did shows all over the continent, partying, no responsibilities… The shows were great, but I was a mess…" She laughs. "You'll never guess who was in the audience at my show in Pergrande. Laxus Dreyar. He was sent to recruit me, but he could see how much of a mess I was. Told me to get my act together and that my father would hate to see me this way, and, boy, did that piss me off."

She shakes her head. "Turned him into a rabbit for that and even then, he kept talking. I was just about to shove him into a cage when he told me he understood what it was like to have no parents and all this power. He told me he had his grandfather to shape him into who he is today. He told asked me how my family thinks of me and…it made me think." She tilts her head. "I hadn't seen my relatives in months at that time. I had been so caught up in distracting myself that I didn't want to go back… But that guy… He had called them. Trivia and Circe were there and we just cried together.

"I didn't realize how much they were hurting." Dazzler's voice shook as she blinked away the wateriness in her eyes. "I didn't think they'd care so much. Everyone wanted me because of my dad. But I should've realized my family wants me for me." She goes to her breast pocket and pulls out a tissue. "That day changed a lot for me. I straightened up with less drinking. I relaxed on my tours and…I called Master Erza.

"I came to Fairy Tail to check it out. It was wild, let me tell you," she cackles. "Literally I walked in and, at the time, people for fighting with Magic, drinks and chairs were flying… It was chaos! So, I took off my top hat and flooded the entire guild hall." She claps her hands as she hoots. "Man, was that hilarious! I took 'em all out with one foul swoop! Master Erza was laughing when she saw that. She was impressed, actually. I thought the guild members were going to be upset with me, but nope! Everyone was laughing!"

Her eyes dazzle as she beams. "I can't believe how chill they were. Gary was the first one to come up to me and let me know he was hoping to meet me. He had come to a couple of my shows and was so amazed at how I pulled it off. A lot of people came up to me to pay respects to my dad, but they more wanted to ask me questions on my tricks. I was so overwhelmed. None of them care about how much of a mess I was…they cared about who I am now."

She wipes away an unintentional tear. "I didn't join Fairy Tail that very minute. They told me stories of my dad and it was…amazing to see that side I never really saw. But I kept touring—this time with a clear conscience. It was…amazing, honestly. Gary helped me on a couple of shows, actually. That's how we became best friends. He was with me as an assistant for some shows and…we just clicked. And no." She shoots a warning look to the side. "There is no shipping here. This is a NOTP, thank you. He's my best friend and I'm highly involved in my fantasy cowboy."

She sighs. "Anyways, while we went out for the after-show party, some epiphany hit me. I was so tired of being surrounded by people who wanted me for my legacy and not by anyone who cared. I had my family, but Circe likes to cause mischief in the Magic Underworld and Trivia has some stuff she needs to deal with… My uncle is in the states, teaching, and I didn't want to move again. I just wanted a place to be 'Dazzler', y'know? So I moved to Magnolia permanently, but I wasn't part of the guild. Don't get me wrong—Fairy Tail is great—but I wasn't certain yet. I still did Stage Magic and met members, but if my dad hadn't joined when offered, why would I? When I asked my uncle why my dad never wanted to join Fairy Tail, he told me something that would have me cursing at his grave forever. He said: 'Robbie wanted you to have your own legacy, not live in his shadow'."

She laughs. "Can you believe that? A dead man out here thinking about his daughter more so than the glory he could get? But I read between the lines. Maybe my dad knew how much trouble I had finding genuine people because of his status. Maybe he knew after he was gone, I needed to be my own person and not just his daughter. And maybe he trusted Fairy Tail would be where my legacy started.

"I ran straight up to Master and asked her what really happened. She told me in her low voice I must already know if I came to her." She shrugs. "So, I joined. I became the first Magician of Fairy Tail all because my dad knew I would." She shakes her hand. "I have to admit I do sometimes doubt if this is what I was meant to do, but… At the end of my crazy jobs, I realize this is where I belong. Ministry be damned. Fairy Tail is my home." She points at the camera. "And that's the story of me becoming the first Magician of Fairy Tail." She gives finger-hearts. "Sayonara…!"

TO BE CONTINUED…

I'm so happy Dazzler found Fairy Tail and Fairy Tail found her! Where would we be without a resident Magician? To find out, tune in to the next Fairy Adventure!

Chibi-Luna is walking down the school halls with her fake glasses and hair in twin braids. She nearly falls when a finger prods her shoulder. "Don't sneak up on people like that!" she admonishes. She smoothens her dress. "Really? Another Fairy Lesson? But this is the last filler until the new episode of the arc!"

The camera shakes side to side.

Chibi-Luna adjusts her glasses. "Well, okay, but this will be a short one." She clears her throat into a fist. "Did you know that there's such a thing as Magimon Contests and battles?" She pulls out her Compact to show an Instagraph page dedicated to both. Some of the pictures of a human and their magical creature fighting against another pair. Others show a human immersed in the Magic of their magical creature.

"While the Grand Magic Games were created as a way for Mages to battle, people who had magical creatures created the Grand Magimon Game and the Grand Magimon Festival," she explains. "There, magical creatures and their owners can compete either with a battle or a showcase. Actually, the entire concept was due to Magimon itself. To hype the games, they created the events and Wintengo company continues to sponsor them to this day."

She puts away her Compact. "Don't worry. Mages get their fair chance to do showcase as well. There's Magic Festivals where Mages of all types show off their powers through beauty, strength, and style. Like a beauty contest but with Magic." She beams. "One day, when I figure out what my powers are, I hope to join! That's all we have for now!"

She turns her back, but the hand stops her with a gesture. "Oh, right! This episode's opening song came from Tokyo Ska Paradise Orchestra called Pride of Lions. Most of the fillers from now on will have that as the opening. The outro is Dazzler's character song called Amazing Magician by Mitchie M and it features Hatsune Miku! Next time, on Fairy Adventure, the new arc!" She waves as she walks away. "Bye-bye, now!"
