25) MORE JANUARY EVENTS
With the end of year holidays over and school back in session Harry returned to his regular routine: up early to work out, then breakfast followed by training with the X-Men, then lunch after which it was off to Ilvermorny for the afternoon until 5 PM before coming back to the X-Mansion for the rest of the day.
He continued to see Ororo regularly, both for lunch once or twice a week and sometimes to hang out on weekends or after classes were over. Occasionally he would stay at Ilvermorny for dinner. He enjoyed spending time with her and it seemed she felt the same.
Other things were happening too. Because of his obvious love of flying Professor Xavier had decided to start training Harry in how to fly some of the flying machines he had. He began with the helicopter he owned deciding to have him work on that before moving him on to the X-Jet. To say Harry took to the helicopter easily would be a no-brainer. As Sirius said about him Harry was born to fly and he would be able to learn how to fly anything, whether it was his own power, brooms, plane, copters, etc. If it could fly Sirius believed that Harry could learn how to fly it. So far he appeared to be right.
Now that he was in a relationship himself Harry's sensitivity towards the romantic feelings of others seemed to bloom and he became aware of things which he now realized had been there for some time but his own complete inexperience with romance had kept him from seeing them. To put it bluntly he figured out from the way that they covertly looked at each other that Scott and Jean were strongly attracted to each other. Unfortunately neither of them was making the slightest move to do anything about it. Harry didn't know why this was the case. As far as he knew neither of them was in a relationship with anyone else so why wouldn't they try to get involved with each other? Was it because they were teammates? That was a valid concern but was it enough of one to keep them from creating a romantic relationship with each other?
Harry knew he shouldn't try to interfere. He was no matchmaker and neither of his teammates would thank him for anything he might try. Instead he went and talked things over with Warren. He didn't want to discuss things with Sirius because Sirius was so much older than him. Warren, besides being only a few years older than him, had also given Harry advice on his own budding relationship with Ororo.
"You finally figured it out" said Warren to Harry when he heard what his teammate had to say, "Bobby, Hank, Sirius, and I all spotted it months ago. Even Dobby knows."
"He does?" asked Harry in surprise.
"Oh yeah" said Warren, "I overheard him saying to the professor that it was a shame that 'Master One-Eye' doesn't open up to 'Mistress Jeannie.'"
"Really? What did the professor say?"
"Nothing much. Just told him not to worry about it."
"I see" said Harry, "you all have experience I don't have."
"Falling in love really does change your perceptions" said Warren with a grin.
"Never mind that" said Harry, "why haven't Scott and Jean done anything about it?" Warren's face became more serious as he considered the question.
"I can guess about Scott a lot more easily than Jean" he said to Harry, "Scott's afraid of what would happen if he lost his glasses."
"Which is very smart of him" said Harry.
"True" said Warren, "but if you take that further I think he may feel that he shouldn't get close to anyone because of possible accidents. That keeps him silent."
"And Jean?" asked Harry, "why doesn't she say anything?"
"How would I know?" asked Warren with a grin, "do I look like a girl to you? I don't know what goes on in one of their minds. Any man who claims to understand women is a liar."
Harry looked a little surprised by that but Warren just chuckled.
"Like the professor told Dobby don't worry about it" he said to Harry, "don't try to do anything. You'll just make things worse. They need to figure it all out for themselves. Either they will or they won't." And with that Harry had to be content.
On the morning of Monday, January 16th, 1995 Professor Xavier called Harry to his office. It was Martin Luther King Day so Ilvermorny did not have classes and the X-Men were off training for the occasion.
"Hello professor" said Harry as he entered the office.
"Hello Harry" said the professor, "thank you for coming."
"No problem" said Harry, "is there something I can help you with?"
"Yes" said Xavier as he leaned back in his chair behind his desk, "a new mutant has recently manifested."
"Oh?" asked Harry, "is it that big one out in the Pacific again?"
"No" said Xavier, "that mutant, whoever or whatever it may be, is unique and I haven't been able to determine anything definite about it except that it's very big. This new mutant is much closer to home and you are uniquely placed to help me make contact with them."
"I am?" asked Harry, "who is this mutant?"
"It's your girlfriend Ororo." Harry's jaw dropped.
"Ororo is a mutant?" he said in surprise.
"Yes" said Xavier, "the first spike from her came on Christmas Day in the late afternoon although it went quiet very soon after and it's only recently that she's been steadily alerting Cerebro to her existence. You were with her that first day. Did you notice anything?"
Harry thought that over. The late afternoon here would have been the late evening at Hogwarts during the Yule Ball. That would have been right around the time that –
Harry made an incredulous face.
"The only thing that happened at that time was that we kissed" said Harry, "you're not seriously suggesting that our kissing caused her mutant powers to wake up, are you?"
"Such powers have manifested for less" said Xavier, "did anything unusual happen when you kissed?"
That actually made Harry stop to think. He remembered the energy he'd felt coming from her and from him as they kissed. He mentioned that to Xavier.
"What could that mean?" asked Harry.
"It could be that your power reacted to her power and woke it up" said Xavier, "it could also mean that the two of you will have something in common where your powers are concerned. Until we know what her powers are it's impossible to say. Would you be able to bring her here so that I could meet her?"
"Probably" said Harry, "should I tell her why?"
"Leave the details to me" said the professor, "I have a feeling she doesn't know what's happening to her. Let her know that the same thing happened to you and you can help. Don't tell her she's a mutant though. I'll do that."
"Right" said Harry, "I'll go to Ilvermorny now." Xavier nodded and Harry left his mentor's office and went back to his room. He put on his heavy jacket, picked up his portkey to Ilvermorny and traveled to the school.
He found Ororo at once. She was standing out on the snow covered lawn in front of the school when he portkeyed in. As Harry got close enough to see what she was doing he stopped in shock. She was holding her right hand out in front of her with the palm facing up. Above the palm little bolts of lightning were dancing while she looked at them with some wonder. It was the same thing that he often did when he played with his electricity.
"Wow" Harry let slip as he wondered if Ororo had the same powers he did. Startled, Ororo looked up and saw Harry. Her lightning faded away as she turned to face him.
"Harry" she said sounding surprised, "I didn't expect to see you here today."
"Why not?" said Harry, "it's a day off. Seems like a good time to come spend some time together." He stepped up to her and kissed her cheek. She kissed him back. He looked deeply into her eyes.
"What were you doing just then?" he asked her, "and why did you stop? I thought it looked pretty good."
"Thanks" said Ororo, "I don't know what it is. It's just something I've been able to do very recently."
"Oh? How recently?" asked Harry.
"Oddly enough it started right after the Yule Ball" said Ororo, "you remember that kiss of ours?"
"I'll never forget it." said Harry with a smile.
"I remember the energy coursing through me" said Ororo, "I think it woke up something in me because I started being able to do weird stuff after that, stuff that isn't like any magic that I know of."
"What kind of weird stuff?" asked Harry.
"Besides the lightning?" said Ororo, "I seem to be affecting the weather somehow. Recently it's like my moods are reflected in the weather. Just yesterday it was snowing heavily and I wanted it to stop. Right after I made the wish it did. I felt like I caused that somehow but I don't know how that's possible." Harry smiled to himself. The conversation was heading in the right direction and he hadn't had to prompt it at all.
"Maybe I can help" he said causing Ororo to look at him in a questioning manner.
"How?" she asked.
"First of all" said Harry, "you should know that you're not only one who can do weird stuff like that." Harry held out his right hand, palm up and soon little lightning bolts were dancing across his hand. Ororo's eyes got very wide.
"You have these powers too?" she asked.
"Yes, but not quite the same as yours" said Harry letting the lightning fade away, "I can control electricity like you just saw but I can't affect the weather at all. Also, I can do this." Harry looked down at the snow and telekinetically lifted up a handful and shaped it into a snowball before throwing it at a tree. Ororo watched him do this with amazement.
"How?" she asked, "and what is all this?"
"It's kind of hard for me to explain" said Harry, "but I know someone who can do that and can help you with these new powers. He certainly helped me."
"Who is this person?" asked Ororo.
"You remember when I told you that I also attend another school besides Ilvermorny?" Harry asked. Ororo nodded so Harry continued: "well the head of that school is the man who has been helping me and a small number of other people who are like you and me to learn how to control and develop our powers. I'm sure he can help you too. If you want I can take you to meet him right now."
"Is this the school where you're learning the "classified stuff" you mentioned?"
"Yes" said Harry, "he doesn't publicize what his school does for the same reason magicals hide themselves from normal people."
"Is that why you didn't tell me about your powers until now?"
"Yes" said Harry, "only a very small number of people know about my other powers. I would have told you eventually though. I felt I could trust you with that knowledge even before today. I just hadn't done it yet."
Ororo looked at Harry but said nothing. Harry went on.
"I promise you'll be safe there" he said "my mentor won't do anything to harm you. In fact he wants to meet you and he asked me to invite you to meet him."
"He does?" asked Ororo, "how does he know about me?"
"He's like us" said Harry, "he has powers too and he actively looks for people like us to help them. He knows whenever someone like us appears. He found me right after my powers first woke up. He found all of the students and we all trust him. Oh, and Professor Dumbledore knows him. They're old friends."
That seemed to do the trick. After thinking for a few moments Ororo decided to go with Harry to meet this person. Harry smiled, took her hand, and activated his portkey. They arrived in Harry's room without any trouble.
"Welcome to the Xavier School for Gifted Youngsters" said Harry, "this is my room." Ororo looked around.
"Nice room" she said.
"Thank you" said Harry who then sent word to Professor Xavier: "Professor I'm back and Ororo is with me."
"Thank you Harry" said the professor to both kids, "please bring her to my office."
"Right away" said Harry.
"Who's that?" asked Ororo in alarm having heard the professor in her head.
"Not to worry Ms. Munroe" said the professor, "my name is Professor Charles Xavier and I'm a telepath. It will be easier if you think your replies to me."
"Like this?" asked Ororo.
"Yes" said the professor, "I'm the head of this school and I'm looking forward to meeting you in person. If you'll come to my office with Harry we can get acquainted."
Harry took Ororo to the professor's office. What Ororo learned in that meeting was eye opening for her. Professor Xavier told her about himself and his school. She learned about mutants and that she was one in addition to being a witch. From what she told the professor they both guessed that her power was to control the weather. The professor promised to help her learn to control and use her powers safely. She would not need to transfer from Ilvermorny to his school. They arranged that she would come to his school once or twice a week so that she could begin working with the professor.
She also learned about the X-Men and that Harry was one of them, specifically he was Lightning. She herself would not be joining the team though, at least not at this time.
"You're too young" said Xavier, "Harry is a very special case. He needed to join the team for reasons that I'll let him tell you if he wants to."
"I'll tell you later" said Harry to Ororo. She nodded.
"Anyway" continued the professor, "after I formed the team I decided that any future X-Men would have to be adults first, which means at least 18. My school will eventually take in and teach any mutants who come here but they will not be considered for the team before they become adults. Perhaps when you turn 18 you might join the team if you want to but not now. Also I won't hide from you that your royal status would have to be considered. I have no desire to cause an international incident."
"I understand" said Ororo.
Harry showed Ororo around the mansion although he didn't show her the Danger Room. He just said she'd probably see how the X-Men trained at a later time. He explained to her about Voldemort not being dead which had led to him joining the team so he could learn how to really fight and hopefully beat Voldemort when they inevitably met again in the future.
Ororo was impressed and assured Harry that she would keep the secrets of the X-Men.
"How many students does the professor have?" she asked.
"Right now, just us X-Men" was the reply, "you'll be the first student who isn't on the team. There will be more in the future I think. It's something the professor really wants."
Ororo began visiting the X-Mansion once a week at first where she worked closely with Professor Xavier. Most of the time Harry would be there too for moral support. After she was done with her training, which was usually in the afternoons after classes at Ilvermorny were done for the day or on weekends, she and Harry spent time together. Her new powers were bringing them closer and both she and Harry were glad of that.
She didn't tell her family about her new powers just yet. This didn't seem like something she could properly explain in a letter. Instead she decided to wait until the summer when she would be able to tell them in person.
After Ororo had been working with Professor Xavier for some weeks he decided to give her a code name of her own even though she wasn't joining the X-Men. It seemed right to him that all students he taught would get such names as it would be one way to keep track of them and what powers they had. After due consideration by both him and Ororo they settled on what they thought was an appropriate code name for her: Storm.
Near the end of January Dumbledore was in his office when his floo flared to life.
"Albus" the voice of Professor Snape came through the fireplace, "are you there? I need to see you at once."
"Step on through my boy" said Dumbledore. A few seconds later Snape emerged from the fireplace. He looked even grimmer than usual.
"Severus" said Dumbledore sounding concerned, "what has happened?" Without saying a word Snape pulled up his left sleeve as far as he could. On his left forearm there was a dark image of a skull with a snake coming out of its mouth. The Dark Mark. It was black like it had just been freshly branded into Snape's arm. Dumbledore looked at it for a long moment.
"I see" he finally said, "when did it happen?"
"It just happened" said Snape, "I came to you as soon as the pain stopped."
"Thank you for doing that" said Dumbledore, "what will you do now?"
"What I must" was the reply.
"Will it be safe for you? I'm sure he knows that you work here."
"A spy is never truly safe" said Snape.
"Then good luck my boy" said Dumbledore with a grave look on his face, "thank you for telling me about this. I'll make good use of the information."
"I'll fill you in when I return" said Snape. Left unspoken between the two of them was the chance that Snape might not return. There was no need to say it as both of them knew that when meeting with Voldemort the possibility of not coming back from such a meeting was a real one.
As soon as Professor Snape left his office Dumbledore acted. He wrote a quick note and gave it to Fawkes.
"Take it to Amelia" Dumbledore said to the phoenix who trilled in agreement and flashed out of the office. After Fawkes was gone the headmaster took some floo powder and threw it into the fire in his fireplace which immediately turned green.
"Minister of Magic's office" Dumbledore said before calling, "Cornelius, are you there? It's Albus."
"I'm here Albus" came the voice of Cornelius Fudge.
"Would you please come through?" asked Dumbledore, "I need to see you at once. The matter is urgent."
Fudge replied that he was on his way and Dumbledore stepped back from the fireplace. A moment later Fudge arrived.
"Albus" said Fudge as he emerged from the floo into the headmaster's office, "I'm surprised to hear from you right now. Is everything all right?"
"I'll explain when Amelia gets here" said Dumbledore, "would you like some tea?"
"I won't say no" said Fudge as he sat in one of the chairs in front of the headmaster's desk. Dumbledore summoned a house elf who arrived with a full tea service. Dumbledore poured out tea for the minister and then for himself. As he was finishing this task Fawkes flashed back into the office with Madame Bones.
"Ah Amelia" said Dumbledore, "so good of you to join us. Please have a seat. Would you like some tea as well?"
"As you both are having some I will too" said Madame Bones as she sat down, "I trust you have a good reason for summoning me like this?"
"I do" said Dumbledore as he handed her some tea, "I hope you are both well?" Some minutes of small talk followed as they all had their tea before Dumbledore raised his wand and cast several privacy charms on the room.
"There" he said putting his wand away, "We have complete privacy from anyone trying to listen to us. Not even the portraits will be able to hear what we say or read our lips."
"Now I'm worried" said Fudge, "you only insure privacy like that when it's a matter of great urgency."
"It is" said Dumbledore looking as serious as either of his guests had ever seen him, "and it's very important that what we are about to discuss be kept secret for now. Just a little earlier today I was given grave news by Professor Snape. You may remember that he was a spy for our side during the war?"
Both of his guests nodded.
"Like all Death Eaters he has the Dark Mark on his arm" said Dumbledore, "ever since Voldemort's fall it had faded to be very light but it never completely went away."
"That's true of all the Death Eaters" said Bones, "it happened to all of the ones we sent to Azkaban after the war and the ones we caught over the summer."
"Well" said Dumbledore, "Professor Snape's Dark Mark has darkened again. When he showed it to me it was almost black." Both Fudge's and Bones' eyes went wide in horror.
"If that's true" said Director Bones, "it can mean only one thing."
"Yes" said Dumbledore, "you both know that I've always thought that Voldemort – " Dumbledore ignored the flinches from both of his guests "– wasn't dead. The events of last Halloween suggested quite strongly that was the case although many didn't want to believe it."
"I should say not" said Fudge.
"Now it seems he has found a way to return" said Dumbledore, "the only reason the Dark Mark would darken again in the way Snape showed me would be if Voldemort had returned and was calling his Death Eaters."
"No, no, no" said Fudge in desperate denial, "this can't be true. Think of the panic this will cause if we announce that he's back."
"Which is why we can't announce it right now" said Dumbledore sternly, "as you say it would cause a panic and beyond the Dark Mark reactivating he has given no sign that he's back yet. Until he shows himself most people won't believe it. We would probably be called liars or be thought of as crazy."
"Then what can we do?" asked Bones.
"We prepare as best we can to face him when he appears" said Dumbledore, "I doubt he will do anything just yet. He'll want to build up his power and his people in secret before he does anything. His situation isn't helped because of all of the Death Eaters who were caught at the Quidditch World Cup last year. We need to do the same but just as he is making secret preparations we also need to keep what we do as secret as possible. That way when he does reveal himself we'll be ready to meet him."
"No" said Fudge starting to sound panicky, "this can't be true. He can't be back Albus, he just can't be!"
"Cornelius get a hold of yourself!" snapped Bones, "this is no time to go to pieces!"
"Amelia is right" said Dumbledore, "we need you to be strong more than anyone else. You're the Minister of Magic. You're the one in charge. If you fall apart what will happen to all of the rest of us?"
"You could take over as minister" said Fudge calming himself and taking deep breaths, "I'm just a mediocre nonentity and everyone knows it. What good would I be in such a situation?"
"Cornelius, no matter what you think of yourself" said Dumbledore, "or what you think others think of you you're still the minister and you have the power to help or hinder us in this matter. Which one will it be?" The minister looked at Dumbledore and then turned and looked at Madame Bones. He saw by the look on her face that she agreed with Dumbledore. Fudge took a deep breath and centered himself.
"I don't want to believe that he's back" he said to Dumbledore after a long moment "but I've never known you to lie to me. You might twist the truth sometimes or not tell me everything you know – but you've never lied."
"Then you believe me?" asked Dumbledore.
"I guess I'll have to" said Fudge looking quite unhappy about it.
"Good" said Dumbledore, "things will be easier if we have your support. I can't take over as minister in this situation. I'm too well known as the 'Leader of the Light.' If I were to take office and start making the necessary changes people would get suspicious of my motives in a way that won't be the case with you."
"But what do we do?" asked Director Bones
"In a way" said Dumbledore, "you've already started doing things. Take Moody's Danger Room project. Cornelius, your support of that proposal was very helpful in getting it passed."
"Thank you" said Fudge, "but that has nothing to do with Lord Thingy."
"I know" said Dumbledore with a small smile, "that's very important. We all know that if we try to build up the DMLE specifically to face Lord Voldemort it will be a very hard sell. But if we emphasize that what we're doing is building on Moody's project it will have a greater chance of success because it doesn't have to do with Lord Voldemort."
"I see what you mean" said Bones with a gleam in her eye, "the whole reason Alastor wants to build a magical Danger Room is not to face enemies like You-Know-Who but to face the other new foes we have discovered that threaten our world."
"Right" said Dumbledore, "if we expand on Moody's proposal to cover the whole DMLE we can paint it as readying the entire department for the new threats. Following Moody's lead the whole department can become better, stronger, and more experienced. The aurors will learn to fight all kinds of threats far beyond just magical ones. They'll be better prepared to face the world – which means that when Voldemort finally does reappear he'll face an auror force that will be much better prepared to deal with him. And why? Because by then he'll just be one of many different kinds of threats that the aurors will be trained to face.
"The key to getting all of this accepted by everyone is that we don't say that Voldemort has anything to do with it! We never mention him at all. Oh no, we're dealing with real threats that everyone knows about. Even former Death Eaters in the Wizengamot will have a hard time arguing against this."
Fudge listened to Dumbledore's argument and his face cleared.
"You're right" he said with more resolve in his voice than either Dumbledore or Bones had heard from him before, "this just might work. Best of all it won't cause a panic. Yes, you may count on my support for this, regardless of whether or not You-Know-Who is back."
"Thank you" said Dumbledore, "your support will be important in getting this all passed, just as it was with the Danger Room. I'm glad you're on board with this."
"As am I" said Bones, "is there anyone else we should tell about this?"
"For now I think we should keep this to as few people as possible" said Dumbledore, "Alastor should know since this was inspired by him and he'll want to be a part of it. In fact, he might be the best person to coordinate the whole project under you Amelia. You'll probably want to brief Scrimgeour too. I would stop there until we have more concrete plans of what we want to do. Cornelius, you should also keep this to yourself. Don't tell anyone else, not even Madame Umbridge. And especially not Lucius Malfoy."
"He opposed the Danger Room proposal" said Bones, "he'll try to stop this too. The longer we keep it him from learning about it the better."
Fudge nodded in agreement. Lucius Malfoy had been one of his closest advisors in days past but ever since Peter Pettigrew had revealed at his trial that Lucius had, in fact, been a true Death Eater his influence with Fudge had sharply declined to a very low level. Officially they were still friends. The Malfoys still moved in the same circles that the Fudges moved in and Lucius still dropped by the ministry a fair amount but Fudge didn't consult with him on important projects very much anymore, if he did at all. This had not gone unnoticed by the rest of the ministry and the Wizengamot. Fudge's own reputation had actually started to rise because of this so it was pretty easy for Fudge to agree not to tell Lucius anything of what he discussed today with Bones and Dumbledore.
"I think we're done here" said Dumbledore, "we should get started on this as soon as possible." Both of his guests agreed and they both left the office. After they were gone Dumbledore leaned back in his chair and took a deep breath. He closed his eyes and concentrated.
"Charles?" he sent, "are you there? We must speak. It's urgent."
"I'm here Albus" came the immediate reply from Professor Xavier, "What's happened?"
"Voldemort's back."
At Avengers Mansion Thor was working out alone in the training room when there was a sudden CRACK and Loki appeared in front of him.
"Why are you here Loki?" Thor asked, raising his hammer in a threatening manner. To Thor's surprise Loki raised his hands in a placating fashion.
"Peace brother" said Loki sounding unusually serious, "I'm not here to fight."
"Then what purpose brings you here?" asked Thor lowering his hammer a little, but not much.
"I come with a warning" said Loki, "that concerns your mutant friend Lightning."
"What about him?" asked Thor tightly.
"You remember that he is magical?"
"Yes."
"In the magical world he has an enemy that has nothing to do with his work as an X-Man" said Loki, "that enemy was banished for many years but he has just returned."
"Has he indeed?" said Thor with a scowl.
"He has" said Loki who then grinned a small grin, "he does not know about his enemy being a mutant or an X-Man. That will be a big surprise for him when they finally face each other."
"Why are you telling me this brother?" asked Thor.
"Because when the time comes for them to meet" said Loki with an earnestness that Thor rarely saw in him and which was never faked when he did, "he may need your help. He may not – the X-Men will be there to help him and they are a formidable team – but his enemy will not be alone. He has many dark supporters at his beck and call."
"If Lightning needs my help he shall have it" said Thor, "he is my friend and I stand by my friends. Do you know when and where this will be?"
"Not yet" said Loki, "but I will. Hold yourself ready."
"I will" said Thor, "I will even bring the Avengers if necessary – but how do I know this is not a trick of yours?"
Loki looked at Thor as if he was the stupidest person in the world – a look that Thor regularly saw on Loki's face when they talked.
"Thor you know that I do not attack children" said Loki, "and Lightning, despite his power and experience is still very much underage. Furthermore his enemy has committed acts that even I, whom you often call evil, abhor and I would see him destroyed for them."
"What has he done?" asked Thor.
"You know what horcruxes are?" asked Loki. As soon as Loki said the word Thor's expression became very dark.
"He did that?" demanded the thunder god.
"Several times" said Loki, "some of them have been destroyed and the rest are being tracked down but it will take time before they are all gone."
"I will help" said Thor with resolve, "no horcruxes should exist and no one who makes them should be allowed to live. Let me know where and when I am needed and I will be ready."
"Good" said Loki before disappearing with another loud crack and leaving Thor to his own thoughts.
(To Be Continued)
A/N - That's all for this week. Ororo's mutant powers have manifested. More than one of you asked me when this would happen. Now it has and she'll be around the X-Mansion from time to time but, like Professor Xavier said, she's not joining the team at this time because of her age and her royal status.
As usual please take a moment to leave me some feedback. Constructive comments are always welcome but no flames or trolls please. As always stay safe and well everyone.
