The Winner Takes It All

Chapter 3

Jane's POV

He watched as her lips stretched into a tiny smile. He had her.

"Okay... I guess I have nothing better to do now. One hour," she said firmly, indicating it with her finger to emphasize her point. "Then we go home."

"We?"

"Yes. If you're going to run away... do it on your own time... Not mine. I'm taking you home, tonight."

"I'm not running away."

"That's what it looks like to me."

He was going to argue his point but decided it wasn't worth it right now. If things went his way tonight, going back home with her would be the prize.

"Two hours," he said flashing her his best smile.

Her eyes narrowed as she watched him. She was very suspicious.

He held his breath… he had one more shot to make things right between them. To remind her what a great team they made and maybe… tell her the truth about his feelings. That part, he wasn't sure about. She said that her relationship with Pike was over, but he caught the sadness and disappointment on her face when she checked her phone earlier. If she was in love with Pike, his secret would have to remain his own.

She scanned his face once more and he saw when she relented.

"Okay. The clock starts now."

"Great! Let's eat! I'm starving," he said rubbing his tummy with both hands as he scanned the ballroom for the buffet table.

He offered his elbow and they walked together towards the buffet spread.

Lisbon's POV

"Jane," she whispered loudly. "There's nowhere to sit."

She had two full plates of food, which at the time seemed like a good idea because her feet hurt and she didn't want to go back for dessert... and... she was really hungry. She hadn't eaten all day.

"Follow me."

He made his way to one of the main tables where the father of the bride was seated. She wanted to tackle him to the ground! Why was he doing this? But she couldn't stop him and she mentally berated herself for thinking they could just have a good time tonight without his antics.

As they approached, their host gestured to two empty chairs and welcomed them enthusiastically.

She listened as Jane made small talk with the man on the FBI's watch list. A man who she knew was the leader of an underground syndicate that imported and exported weapons for fringe governments. She ate slowly, her appetite waning as she got more annoyed with Jane's behavior.

"I'm sorry sweetheart; I've been neglecting you," he said suddenly. "Let's take a spin on the dance floor."

She followed him woodenly onto the crowded dance floor; not because she wanted to dance with him, but because she wanted to give a piece of her mind.

He took her into his arms, pulling her close. She hadn't thought through the proximity to him in this activity when she agreed. She was stiff in his arms and he was gazing in her eyes questioningly.

"I'm not going to bite you," he chuckled with a lopsided grin.

That sobered her; his smiling face made her want to wipe it off. Her feet hurt, she didn't want to be here and he was playing games again.

"What are you doing? Are you crazy? Do you know who that is?"

"I have an idea…"

"Why are you engaging with him? Do you know how this can look to the higher-ups? Fraternizing with criminals!"

"Calm down... I just thought… if you're going to bring me home… why go back empty-handed?" he said conspiratorially. "What if I brought back a bit of intel to smooth things over."

Of course, she forgot; Jane always had an angle… he liked to keep an ace up his sleeve. When she said she was taking him home, she didn't actually expect him to comply. Their situation hadn't changed… so why was he acting like he was going to come home with her. He was up to something… her internal alarm bells started ringing loudly.

Jane was moving her across the dance floor with ease. He was a better dancer than she remembered from that one time they danced together. At this proximity, she could smell his cologne and soap radiating off his body. He smelled so good. With her heels, she was tall enough to get a good look at his face while they dance. He was staring off in the crowd but then his eyes came to rest on her face… she felt like he was caressing her with his gaze. This wasn't the first time she caught that look from him, but it is the first time that he didn't look away. Before… she always thought that she'd imagined it, but right now, he was letting her see it. Was she imagining it? Jane would never let himself be vulnerable with her unless he wanted to manipulate her.

Suddenly a thought occurred to her… when Jane had a goal, he achieved it or kept trying until he did or decided to stop.

He made it quite clear with his actions these past weeks that he wants her to stay in Austin. He was playing her somehow. She didn't know what his plan was yet… but he was most definitely up to something. She went through the events of tonight and decided that whatever he was up to, was being planned on the fly. Whatever wild idea he had, got initiated when she came back to find him at the casino.

He smiled at her and she felt trapped. It was so hard to look at his smiling face and not let herself be charmed by him. He had an innocence about him when he smiled, but behind his almost angelic exterior was a sharp strategic brain and a devious and manipulative soul. He didn't want to hurt her, that she knew without a doubt… it's just the way he was… the way he's had to be to survive his childhood, provide for his family, and find the serial killer that killed them. It was in his DNA.

Her heart ached for him and all he'd endured. She didn't want to hurt him either. She wanted him to find peace and happiness. And she wanted him to stay in Austin because Cho could watch over him and she would know where he was and could still be close enough to keep him safe. That part of her that had been watching over him all these years just wouldn't let go. She loved him, flaws and all like she loved Grace, Wayne, and Kimball. A little twinge of guilt pinged in her stomach… that was a bit of a lie. She was more attached to Jane… had a stronger bond with him than the others.

She allowed herself to bask in his innocent caressing gaze, something she'd never done before. He smiled wider, surprised that she didn't look away. So she gave him her best smile and was rewarded with what she could only describe as pure happiness reflecting back in his eyes. Then something shifted inside her; almost a flush of euphoria or anticipation rushing around. Goosebumps broke out over her entire body. She closed her eyes and leaned her head against his shoulder; needing a reason to break eye contact with him. Something had just changed, but she didn't know what or why.

She was just getting used to being in his arms when the music changed rapidly to a traditional beat and everyone on the dance floor exclaimed together excitedly and out of nowhere someone grabbed her hand and pulled her into some kind of circle dance. Jane was also being pulled by another guest.

She tried to leave, as did Jane but their counterparts wouldn't allow them… the women kicked off their shoes and pointed to her to do the same. She complied and tried to follow the steps. Before she knew it, she was laughing and having a great time. She kept glancing at Jane when she could and he was laughing as well while trying to keep in sync with the steps.

They were both out of breath by the time the song ended with smiles so wide, their cheeks hurt. But their reprieve was short-lived when they were grabbed again as another traditional song started.

A long pause between songs signaled the end of the traditional dances, so she started looking for her shoes. Jane joined her in her search when a slow song came on and their new friends pushed them together to dance. Jane pulled her close, taking her by surprise. Without her shoes, their height difference was more pronounced and the way he held her was different. Her head arrived just under his chin and she could feel his breath in her hair. He was also dancing mostly in one spot with one of her hands tucked in his and against his chest. It felt too intimate and she wanted out.

"My feet hurt. We should go."

Jane's POV

Lisbon looked very uncomfortable and he knew better than to push the situation. He'd been holding her closer than what was appropriate between friends wanting to see how she reacted.

He took a deep breath… this wasn't looking good for him. But he wasn't ready to give up.

"C'mon… aren't you having fun?"

"We can't stay here. We have to go… my feet are killing me. I want to go home."

"I technically still have 47 minutes; come with me. I want to show you something."

"Jane…"

"C'mon. I promise it's worth it."

"A hotel room… this is what you wanted to show me?" she said looking at him incredulously.

"Uh, no. We just need to get changed first."

"And how can I do that, I don't have clothes, Jane."

"I know… you can use the bathrobe."

"Not gonna happen," she replied deadpanned.

She gave him her best cop stare, her lips pressed in a straight line.

"I just don't want you to ruin your dress," he said apologetically, throwing his hands up in front of himself in a sign for her to calm down.

"Let me worry about that. Just show me what you want to show me?"

"You should change out of the dress. I promise you won't regret it."

"No. And if you won't tell me, then I'm leaving."

He took in her posture and knew he wouldn't win.

"Okay. But I'm sure you'll regret your choice."

"I won't. Not where you're concerned."

Her guard was way up with him. He wasn't sure how he could get it down in such a short period of time.

"When did you get this anyway?"

"When I got here... I bribed a whale handler. Figured this would be better than the cheap motel I was at; don't you agree? He told me about this one great perk with this room... this way."

"So, you're not going back to the motel?"

"Nope... checked out."

He watched her face as the elevator doors opened; she looked on guard before the doors opened, but now a look of amazement replaced it.

"Wow, Jane... this is amazing. Rooftop hot tub," she said quietly.

"You kept saying you wanted to go home and soak in a bath... this is better."

She turned to look at him, her eyes apologetic.

"Sorry. This is very thoughtful. But I don't see how..." she said gesturing with her hands at her dress.

This area of the rooftop was private. They were surrounded by a tall wooden fence on three sides; the only opening was facing the cityscape so they could take in the views. He was quite sure that the other executive suites had the same set-up. The hot tub and its surroundings were luxurious and beautifully decorated. Bathrobes, towels, and a minibar rounded out the setting.

"I have a solution," he said with confidence. He just needed to get her comfortable. "I'll dim the lights around the hot tub. You can undress, keep your undies, they're like a swimsuit anyway, and get in. I won't look."

She walked up to the hot tub and looked inside at the dark swirling water. She must have decided that the arrangement was feasible because she turned with a huge smile.

"Okay... but no funny business."

"I promise," he said, returning her excited smile.

A few minutes later they were both seated in the hot tub facing the cityscape of lights. Lisbon was seated as far from him as possible, at least two more people could sit comfortably between them. This particular hot tub had molded jetted seats and head cushions for comfort. He let himself watch her as she enjoyed the experience, her eyes closed. There wasn't much for him to see... everything below her elegant neck was submerged underwater, her hair fanned out over the edge to keep it dry.

"Jane... this is the best idea you've ever had."

"It's that good, huh?"

"You have no idea. It feels so good. My feet... oh my god... the pain is going away."

Her eyes were still closed and he chuckled a bit.

"I'm glad you're enjoying it."

They sat in silence for a while. He closed his eyes too; enjoying the soothing hot water on his achy back from his stint in jail.

Lisbon's POV

She opened her eyes slightly and tilted her head towards Jane to see what he was doing. She regretted her decision immediately. His long naked arms were stretched along the edge of the hot tub, his hands gripping the sides loosely. She always loved to look at his hands… they were the sexiest hands she'd ever seen on a man. She allowed her eyes to travel to the rest of his exposed body, fixating on his broad shoulders and then his toned upper chest. She couldn't help but acknowledge that he had a very sexy manly body. She forced her eyes up; his head was leaning back against the headrest, a soft content smile on his face, his eyes closed. He'd wet his hair at some point and now it was slicked back. He was stunningly beautiful.

A rush of awareness flooded her body and she averted her gaze. The man was sex on a stick and as potent without clothes as he was in his suits. She clenched her teeth trying to understand why she was starting to have such visceral reactions to him. This was Jane... the thorn in her side, not a date.

"Are you alright there Lisbon?" he said, adjusting himself slightly. "I can feel the tension radiating off you from here."

"I'm fine. I'm great actually."

Jane opened his eyes and sat up suddenly, turning to face her, an incredulous look on his face. The tone of her voice must have betrayed her.

"What's wrong?"

"Nothing's wrong," she answered in a panic.

Shoot, he was going to start digging. He couldn't possibly know what she had just been thinking about, she reminded herself. She pasted on a smile, but he was watching her like a sniper with his target in his sight.

"C'mon, Lisbon. Just come out with it. You were fine and now you're stressed. What were you just thinking about?" he cajoled.

Oh god. She couldn't escape... she was essentially trapped in the hot tub, pinned by his dancing green eyes. She needed to throw him off and give him something else to focus on. She searched her brain. She needed to take him off the offensive.

"I want the real reason why you're leaving because we both know you have no plans to come back to Austin with me tonight."

He frowned at her, his eyes seeking on hers.

"You don't know that."

"Yes, I do."

"I might surprise you."

"You usually do... but it's rarely a good surprise."

"You wound me, Teresa. Was this not a good surprise?"

"Jane. Answer my question. Why are you really leaving?"

"I already explained."

"No, you didn't. You-"

"Fine... I'll answer your question. But you have to answer mine first."

"You're just trying to change the subject."

"I promise to answer your question to your satisfaction if you answer mine."

"Fine."

"Why did you and Pike break up tonight?"

He saw her guard go up, her jaw clenching.

"That is none of your business."

"Great! Then we agree. We can just continue to enjoy this beautiful view. Drink?" he asked, showing her a tiny vodka bottle.

He smiled cheekily knowing she wouldn't back down. When she didn't respond he cracked open the seal and took a swig from the tiny bottle, the vodka burning as it went down his throat.

"One thing has nothing to do with the other," she said with annoyance.

"How do you know? You are asking me to open up to you about why I'm leaving. But you won't share?"

"My breakup has nothing to do with anything and it's personal."

"Okay. Well… my reason for leaving is also personal."

She was now sitting very rigidly in her seat. She was staring at him through the narrowed slits of her eyes. She was annoyed and he just loved the fire in her eyes when she got that way. How he hadn't realized how in love with her he'd been, he had no idea… but he had to be truthful with himself and admit that it was probably for a very, very long time.

His heart was aching to tell her how he felt. The words danced on his tongue. It frightened him to be vulnerable with someone again, but it had to be better than the way he felt now; sick with the thought of losing her.

"Fine. You tell me why you're leaving and I'll tell you why me and Marcus broke up."

"Umm… that's not how it works. You want something from me… therefore you must share first."

She leaned back against the backrest, the water sloshing with her aggressive movement as she crossed her arms. She stared off into the distance… she was analyzing her options, he was sure. How badly she wanted to know the answer to his question would determine if she gave in or not.

"I came here because I care about you. You don't want to be a fugitive again… I just want to help you."

"I know."

"Then why are you fighting me?"

He couldn't answer that question. He needed to know if he had a chance with her at all. He had been planning to ask her about the break-up tonight and she created the perfect opportunity with her deflection. Lisbon wasn't a sharer of feelings. What he was asking was a big deal. He already surmised that the break-up was about him. But he needed to know if she was in love with Pike and if she wanted a reconciliation.

"I'll make it easy for you since sharing is not your thing… I'm assuming the break-up is about me?"

"Everything doesn't revolve around you, Patrick Jane."

"Okay… then correct me."

Her silence confirmed that he was indeed the cause of her breakup.

"Do you love him?"

Her eyes shot to his in surprise.

"That's none of your business and I won't answer questions simply for your amusement."

His heart raced as he took in all her cues with excitement. She didn't love Pike.

"It's not for amusement, Teresa. Is it so hard to believe that I care about you as well and I'm just trying to be there for you?"

"I'm fine! I don't need to talk about it. It's over."

"Are you still going to D.C.?"

"Of course, I am! It's a great position. But how does that matter anyway, when you said you're leaving whether I stay or not?"

This was his chance. His opening. He should tell her now. He was hoping to tell her in a more romantic way… he had hoped for camaraderie between them before he spilled his feelings… but things with Lisbon were too complicated. He had to do it now. He took a deep breath and turned his body towards her, letting his arms go under the surface of the water. He waited for her to look at him.

"I'm in love with you."

She blinked a few times in stunned silence. He reached for her hand but she recoiled. Anger lit up her eyes.

"You're a son of a bitch, you know that!"

She propelled herself out of the water quickly and without the previous regard for her modesty and grabbed a robe to wrap around herself. He followed suit trying to keep up with her quick pace, but she was in the elevator before he could get to her. He kept calling out to her, but she ignored him as she jabbed the button forcefully.

By the time he reached her in the room, she was dressed and wild-eyed.

"I knew you were up to something. But this is a whole new level. No more games… I don't care about your reasons anymore. You're coming with me, back to Austin, willingly or forcefully. You got that mister?"

Lisbon's POV

"Teresa… this is not a game. I meant what I said."

She was so mad at him, she could barely think. He was always playing games and now he was trying to manipulate her again. But it wouldn't work, because she'd been expecting some kind of game and all he did was show his hand.

She forced herself to calm down a bit and reign in her anger so she could think clearer.

"Get dressed. We're leaving."

"Teresa… let's talk about this-"

"There's nothing to talk about. Get dressed."

"You're running away."

"I'm not running away! If I was running... I wouldn't be taking you with me."

"We need to talk this out."

"There's nothing to talk about."

"I tell you that I love you and your reaction is to arrest me? We need to talk."

"Jane… stop saying that you love me… I'm not letting you pull me into your stupid game. I'm arresting you because I have information that you are going to flee the country and as an FBI agent it's my job to prevent you."

"It's not a game, I love you."

"Well, I'm sure you'll have forgotten it in an hour from now. You have before."

He went pale at her comment.

"Teresa, this is not that, I promise."

"It is that... you've said it before to manipulate me… and the entire time you were involved with… forget it…"

"Teresa…"

"Get dressed or I will take you out like that."

His eyes darted around looking at her face. She didn't feel any relief when he walked past her into the washroom with his clothes. She fidgeted as she waited for him to come out. His words just kept repeating in her mind. Those words cut her deep. She fought tears of anger at the ruthlessness that Jane displayed in trying to get what he wanted from her. Did he really think she would fall for it? Didn't he realize the damage he was doing to their friendship?

He emerged, a frown creasing his brow.

"Tere-"

"Stop. I don't want to hear any more of it. It won't work."

"What do you think is going on here?" he said softly. "I told you how I feel… I answered your question."

She couldn't believe he was digging his heels in. She started pacing, her damp feet squishing in her shoes making it hard to do so efficiently.

"So… I'm supposed to believe that after all these years… you're suddenly in love with me?"

"Not suddenly… I estimate that I've felt this way for quite a while."

She made a disbelieving noise with her mouth, "Yeah, right."

"I love you, Teresa. Why is that so hard for you to believe?"

"Oh, no, no, no. Don't turn things around. You don't get to do that. If our friendship means anything to you, you will stop this now."

"I'm not tricking you. I'm in love with you. How can this be a trick?"

"I've known you long enough to know how your brain works. You know… Marcus said you were up to something. He thought you engineered all this somehow to get me out here. I didn't believe it, but now I have to wonder. And this… this is… unbelievable. Did you really think I would fall for it? Do you have so little regard for my intelligence?"

"Teresa-"

"No! I'll tell you what you're up to so you know that I know, okay… I think your plan was to string me along. Get me to what? Give you a chance? We'd date… just long enough for me to give up on my new position and then you'd conveniently say that we should just be friends. You'd give a good reason like not being ready or some kind of crap like that so I feel pity for you and you get what you want."

"That is most definitely not what is going on right now," he said with his hand on his heart. "I would never use you like that, or hurt-"

"Humrp. You've used me before."

She hadn't meant to say that out loud, but it was the truth. She didn't like to remember how he manipulated her in the past… but he had and often. She had excused his behavior before and forgiven him because she truly believed that he'd only done it to advance his pursuit of the man who killed his family. But there was no reason for it now.

He moved towards her and she stood still unable to move. Her heart was racing and suddenly her mind kicked in and she moved towards the door.

"Let's go."

He tapped the top of the side table with his index finger, watching her. His eyes narrowed. She felt like a worm dangling on a hook.

"Do you feel anything for me?" he asked quietly.

"What I feel or don't feel isn't important. Let's go."

"It's important to me."

"I bet it is... so you can use it against me."

"C'mon, Teresa. What you're saying is farfetched and you know it."

Jane's POV

"Fine... you want me to believe in this... this... lie. Prove it," she challenged, her arms crossing over her chest.

"How would you like me to prove it?"

"I don't know. You figure it out."

When she got like this, she was so hard to reach. When her mind was made up, it was hard to change it. She had definitely convinced herself that he was playing her. Of all the scenarios he'd run through his mind, this wasn't on the list at all. Maybe they both needed to regroup.

"How about we go home... we're both tired. We can talk on the way. And... maybe we can start with baby steps. I could take you out, we could talk."

"That's your plan. To do exactly what I expected you to do?"

"I'm just thinking that maybe you need to sleep on it."

She kissed her teeth and shook her head.

"I don't need to sleep on it. This is over. The minute we leave this room, you are never to mention it again. I'm taking you home and in four weeks I'm moving to D.C. and you can do whatever you want."

It suddenly occurred to him that she had challenged him. She didn't need to unless she was curious. Unless she had doubts about her theory. So he decided to lay the rest of his cards on the table.

"I was jealous these last few weeks. Watching you with Pike was driving me crazy."

She stilled, her eyes searching his. Whatever she'd been looking for, she didn't find. She averted her gaze and grabbed a statuette on the mantle and repositioned it.

"You did a great job of hiding it."

"You think so?"

"You were encouraging and supportive."

"Well... that's how I thought I should be. It's not how I felt. Actually... I didn't know how I felt until three days ago. I just knew that I wanted you to be happy and Pike was making you happy. But I just felt worse the happier you got with him and I couldn't understand why."

He took a step closer to her. He could see her guard lowering. Then a few more steps until she was close enough to touch, but not too close as to spook her. Her arms were now wrapped around herself in self-protection. Her lips were set in a pout, her eyes narrowed on his face.

"I want to look at you all the time. You're so beautiful. I've been numb inside for so long... but tonight, when we were laughing together... I was happy. When we danced... I didn't want to let you go."

He slowly reached for her hand and held it inside both of his. She held his gaze and he could feel the energy between them.

"More than anything, I want to kiss you," he said holding his breath.

She blinked, pulling her hand out of his and backing away.

"No. Absolutely not. I'm not going to fall for your little act."

"It's not an act," he said softly.

She wanted him to kiss her just now, he was sure of it. She had to have some feelings for him. He took her hand again, and she didn't retreat.

"One kiss. You have nothing to lose. If you're right, then a kiss will prove it."

She was considering his request, chewing her upper lip.

"Okay… Let's put an end to this ridiculous charade."

She tilted her head towards him, her eyes challenging him to take what she was offering obstinately. This definitely did not have the romance he was hoping for. It would be difficult with her barriers in place, but he had to try.

He brushed the back of his fingers against her cheek, keeping his eyes trained on hers. Her skin was so soft and warm. He traced the contour of her jaw with his fingertips lightly; her eyes probed his questioningly. She must have expected him to go in for the kiss immediately.

He leaned in slowly and decided to give her time to get used to his touch. He kissed the corner of her mouth lightly, leaning his forehead against hers. Then he kissed the other corner, softly rubbing his cheek against hers. He planted a series of soft kisses to her cheeks, slowly making his way back to her mouth. He pulled away slightly to get her to open her eyes and look at him again. Her pupils were dilated and his heart soared. She was feeling something. This wasn't mechanical for her.

He let his hand drop to her hip and pulled her against him. Her eyes popped in surprise and her lips parted, her breath panting. He leaned in and kissed her lips softly. He nipped her upper lip, then her lower lip. She started kissing him back and he fought the urge to move faster. He let her take the lead as her hands came up to his neck and pulled him closer. Her petite fingers were stroking the back of his head and neck, making it hard to keep his self-control. He wanted to taste her.

One of her hands slipped under his shirt and rubbed his chest. The feeling of her warm hand on his skin set him on fire; he crushed her to him as he plunged his tongue into her mouth, satisfying his need to taste her. Their tongues dueled each other for dominance, their moans becoming louder.

His brain was in a fog. All he could think about was his need to be in contact with her. He broke their kiss and skimmed his lips along her jawline and to her neck. He kissed and sucked on the spot he'd been admiring all night. Her skin was silky against his lips and tongue. He ravaged her neck in desperation; needing more and more contact. She was kissing his face, his neck, running her fingers through his hair. He brought his mouth back to hers and this time they took turns taking what they needed and wanted.

His skin was on fire; but like a cold bucket of ice poured over his head, he was pulled from his fugue of desire when she undid his pants. He grabbed her hands.

"We need to slow down," he said between kisses.

"What?" she asked in confusion, still trying to get into his pants.

"We need to stop. We can't make love tonight."

She broke the kiss, a look of confusion marring her features. Suddenly, she pushed away from him, wiping her mouth. Panic welled inside him. She was upset.

"Teresa... we're going too fast."

"Too fast? Seriously?" she said with a fake laugh. "Too fast, huh? I guess you were right... a kiss would show your hand and you know what… it proved me right."

She shook her head, her jaw clenched tight. She grabbed her purse and headed towards the door wordlessly.

"Where are you going?"

"Home. I'm tired of all this."

She turned around slightly, "I'll cover for you until morning. Go away, Jane. I don't care where anymore. Just get the hell out of my life."

"Teresa, don't go like this. We can't just fall into bed... we need time."

Her anger switched to confusion again.

"You've had plenty of time, Jane."

And with that statement, she exited the room. He took off after her, running to the bank of elevators. She must have been running because she was already entering the elevator when he got to her. Her eyes were red as she turned to face him.

"I'm not giving up on you. I can't. I'll find a way to prove to you that this is real. I promise," he said as the elevator doors closed and took her away from him.
