Once again, Thank y'all for the continuous support on this story even if there's moments where it totally has to be unbearable to read all the mistakes haha. Read on My Friends.
Artemis let out a load groan at the loud knocking on her dorm door. Glancing at the clock that resided on her nightstand, her eye twitched. Why was someone knocking on her door at 8am? It was a Saturday and they didn't have classes so whoever was doing it better have a good reason. Crawling out of bed she glanced at herself in the mirror and almost balked at her hair. It stuck out at random angles and it looked like she had just been struck by her father's lightening bolt. Glancing at the rest of herself she deemed herself inappropriate to answer the door at the same time the knocking on her door started again.
"I swear to the gods! Whoever is knocking better have a good reason to have woken me up or you will be lacking body part!"
Apollo's voice rang out from behind the door and Artemis immediately let out a very loud groan, "Cmon little sis! You and I are going out today. Be ready within an hour!"
Artemis let out another groan as she heard Apollo walk away. She really did not want to go out today. Being a mortal was tiring. Before she could hunt for days without getting tired. Artemis was getting another level of respect for her hunters who always pushed at her breakneck pace. Looking back at herself in the mirror she shook her head and immediately walked over to the bathroom. She needed a shower. Lifting her arm up she sniffed her armpit and winced slightly. Yeaaaah, She most definitely needed a shower. Reaching over she turned the water on to a lukewarm and started to undress herself.
Looking at the scars on her body she felt the same feelings she had been experiencing the past couple days but before it could grow she heard Percy's words in her head when she expressed her desire to be wanted.
"I think you're beautiful." Artemis's head shot up to stare at him and noticed he was frowning heavily. "You are by far the most beautiful goddess on Olympus. You're even up there with my mom on too beautiful women." Amusement dripped from his voice as he said that, a teasing tint to his voice. "Seriously though, You are beautiful Artemis. Not just physically but on the inside too. You're unapologetically yourself. You don't care what the other god's have to say about your opinions and you truly couldn't give a damn about any man who approaches you. You don't expect others to support you continuously and you do what you desire."
He took a glance at her before continuing, "Artemis, you truly are beautiful. You don't need to have all those curves and flashy clothes to prove it. You could stop a man dead in his track in what you're wearing right now, of course it be better with the cowboy hat." He teased her.
She shook her head a smile gracing her lips. If it had been any other man that had even dared to say that to her she probably would have mutilated his manhood but when Percy said it apart of her got excited. Happy to be complimented in such a way. Running her hands along a thin white scar on her stomach she smiled at herself. Of course she looked like a hot mess in that moment but she had a feeling Percy would just joke her worries away and cause her to start laughing. But since when did Artemis think about a man on her free time?
She pursed her lips slightly and almost laughed at how bipolar she could be sometimes. She was just happy to think about Percy and just like that it had switched. Although her switch had a valid point, since when did she start thinking about a man? Was it so bad to think of him though? He had been a great friend to her the whole time she had been mortal. He provided her comfort when she needed it and he didn't even complain when she got bitchy with him. He was patient and he made sure she was enjoying herself. Of course she was fine with everything until it came up to school work. She was ready to ring this man's neck in like it was nobodies business. How could he get 21 out of 9 plus 10. Artemis didn't get it but apparently Apollo did because he burst out laughing like it was the end of the world. Percy spent the next 20 minutes begging Artemis to help him.
Shaking her head again she continued to undress before stepping into the warm water. Her shoulders immediately sagged as the warm water hit her body. Running her hands through her steadily growing wet hair she allowed herself the pleasure of relaxing for the first time in awhile. She couldn't remember the last time she didn't feel like the world was caving in on her. Literally, she had held it for a couple weeks. Thinking about holding the world brought back the memory of Percy taking the sky for her. He had been but a young boy then and he had been searching worriedly for Annabeth as well as watching Zoe fight as if it was him in the fight. That was the day when Artemis truly understood the boy's personality. He was loyal to a fault and it was almost an anomaly at how well he held himself. Sally Jackson had done him right raising him. She was sure it also had to do with his fatal flaw being Loyalty.
Lathering the soap into her hair Artemis thought about what could Apollo possibly want to do today. Her brother hadn't made any plans with her and yet he was still very adamant that they hung out today. Artemis had a feeling that it had something to do with the fact they did not hang out much in their godly lives so now that they had the time he wished to hang out. Thinking about Apollo brought out the mortal emotions in her once again. She loved her brother dearly but she couldn't help the way her heart would break a little when she saw him hitting on women bringing children into this world that he would be forced to ignore. She was a little happier with the fact that Apollo didn't have a wife but it still wasn't enough to settle the uncertainty in her gut whenever she caught him with a woman. Artemis loved her nieces and nephews dearly and although she didn't show it she favored them over other demigods.
Often times Artemis found herself wondering what it would be like to have her own children. Of course she had the hunters but it was a sisterhood rather then Artemis being a mother. It wasn't a pleasure she would ever be able to experience one day because even as the goddess of childbirth it was just not something in her territory. Being a mother was not something she would experience and it usually didn't wear down on her but sitting in this mortal body was really bringing up emotions Artemis hadn't felt in a really long time. Something that she had learned long ago to let go. To be a god meant to be heartless and vain. She could not bring herself to feel things because whatever she was feelings about would fade and she would continue to move along. Artemis would keep going while whatever she felt would stay behind. And yet at night when she was alone she would weep. She would cry when she lost her hunters.
Artemis hadn't realized that at some point she had leaned back against the wall and closed her eyes, lost in her own thoughts. Blinking rapidly she finished showering before stepping out and grabbing a towel. She wore a slight scowl on her face wanting to scold herself for thinking on her feelings but there was a part of her that felt free. Something she hadn't felt since she was running barefoot through the forests of Delos with animals at her side. Artemis longed for freedom more then anything. A break from the grueling task of being emotionless and she was finally experiencing it. Sighing and keeping her body loose Artemis decided that while she was mortal she was going to let herself experience these emotions. Why should she deny them? If her father was going to punish her with the gift of mortality so be it. She was going to enjoy herself and learn what it's like to be mortal.
With a towel wrapped around her body she walked into her room and screamed when she saw Percy. He let out his own scream and quickly covered his face apologizing profusely and trying to stumble back to the door.
"Dear Hades! Oh gods, Artemis! I'm sorry!" Percy started to stammer still keeping himself blind, "I-I thought you had already left with Apollo! I was just dropping off the flannel, shirt and hat you stole from me the other day! I figured you want it and I swear I wasn't trying to peek at you, gods I'll just go!"
Artemis's jaw was dropped as she watched the demigod run straight into a wall. He let out a loud groan and clutched his nose before finally finding the door and bolting out. Artemis didn't even know what to say. Again, Percy had done something that other men would have been killed for and she didn't even bat an eye at him maliciously. She kind of felt bad for him based off his reaction. The poor man had turned brighter then Ares when he's been caught sleeping with Aphrodite on Olympus TV. Although him running into the wall was fairly amusing, she couldn't lie.
Shaking her head Artemis was quick to pick out her new outfit. A simple pair of blue skinny jeans, a white shirt and these shoes called vans. She had never wore them herself but they we're just sitting there so she thought she would try it out. Artemis smiled softly at the flannel and put it on, even if it was going to be hot out she still wanted to wear it. Artemis was quick to note that this was not in fact the flannel she had stolen from him but rather the one he had worn. The smell of the ocean filled her nose and she couldn't help the light sigh that escaped her. She felt like Aphrodite when Ares gave her his clothes which was not a good thing. She could not be feeling the steps of a crush on this man.
Artemis's eye twitched rapidly as she looked at the clock and noticed she had 15 minutes left before she was supposed to be stolen away by Apollo on whatever sibling day he has planned. Which was ample enough time to analyze what she was feeling for Percy. She was fairly sure it tied into the fact that Percy had listened to her and didn't judge her no matter what she said or did. The man looked at her like she hung the stars when she kicked Eric in the balls for trying to hit on her yesterday and it made her feel butterflies. At the time she hadn't put much thought into it but now she was on the verge of jumping out the window and visiting her uncle.
She collapsed into her chair and thought about the night he had asked about Orion. "Did you love him or were you pulled to him?" Such a simple question and yet it threw her entire view on the boy's long dead step brother. Artemis decided that she didn't love Orion but she was rather pulled into him. He was attractive of course but looks never caught Artemis's attention. It was rather the personality and sometimes accomplishments. Contrary to popular belief Artemis wasn't a complete bitch to every man she had ever met. Orion had taken her by surprise. He had exclaimed his want to join Artemis in her hunts and was adamant that he had the skills to keep up. She had laughed with her hunters and gave him the most dirty tasks to accomplish and yet he never faltered. He had been so confident and sure of himself that Artemis couldn't help but find herself admiring the god. How could she not admire someone who had proven his skill? Even then he had always been so respectable around her and her hunters.
Blinking Artemis realized she herself couldn't remember if he had tried to assault one of her hunters, if Apollo did not deem him worthy enough or if Orion angered Gaea and she sent that Scorpion. It made no sense to her and it was the part of Artemis that she hated. Gods we're subjects to the myths surrounding them. Try as they might they would never be free of what the mortals thought of them. It was one of the reasons that Athena had been so pissed when she was named Minerva by the romans. She could never escape what the Mortals claimed about her. Artemis hated that she could not pick out what it had been done that caused Orion to end up in the underworld. She had vague memories of holding his dying body and sobbing. She was fairly sure that it was she who had killed him but anything other then that was a blur.
Focusing back in on her world rather then her memories the sea green eyes she had looked into so long ago filled her mind ago but yet this time they belonged to another man. A man that was selfless and always respected others. A man that downplayed his own abilities and did not focus on what he has accomplished but what others did. They we're so similar and yet they we're different. Artemis had been pulled to Orion but Percy was someone she could find herself loving. If only that was something she could accomplish or let herself feel. Artemis could never let her hunters down like that, never turn her back on who she is. She couldn't go back in time and undo the decisions she made back then and even if she could? She wouldn't. Artemis had chose her path and she was going to walk it.
The knock of her dorm door immediately shot her to her feet. Artemis shot up and quickly looked in the mirror before stepping up to the door. Artemis didn't even remember braiding her hair but she probably had done it when she was lost in her thoughts. Apollo was leaning against the door frame with a raised eyebrow staring down at her.
"Can I ask why Percy was begging the gods to save him?"
Artemis snorted lightly, "Percy entered my dorm and encountered me in nothing but a towel. I think he was fearing for his life."
Apollo's eyes went wide and his draw dropped as he stared at her in shock. "You mean to tell me he is still living when there was nothing but a towel covering you?"
"You do realize we went around only wearing sheets for awhile, right? I was covered and there was nothing he could see we just both scared each other."
Apollo scoffed and shook his head. He couldn't believe that Artemis wasn't trying to kill Percy for even entering her dorm with out permission. Then again, she always had a soft spot of the children of Poseidon. He chuckled slightly at his own thoughts before starting off in the direction of the dorm exits. "Cmon then! We got places to be!"
Artemis set off after Apollo with a curious glance on her face. She wasn't too sure where they we're going but Apollo sure seemed too. She silently followed after her brother and figured that today was going to be a nice enough day. The weather wasn't too bad and there weren't too many people out on campus at this time of morning. Just gym rats and people who decided to pick morning classes. (Gods bless their souls)
After a short walk she realized they we're at the campus store. She raised an eyebrow at Apollo with a curious glance. He just winked at her and opened the door for her to go in first. Artemis was quickly face to face with a ton of books that looked like they could probably kill Kronos if she were to throw them.
Apollo looked around for a second before letting out a loud shout of excitement, "There! Notebooks and pens. Lets get operation Help Artemis Live on track!"
"Apollo what are you talking about?"
"My my, we're going to get this notebook and pen and we're gonna write down what you want to do while we're mortal!"
Artemis let out a loud sigh and shook her head. Why was Apollo trying to help her with this? "Dude, I've already wrote what I want to do down in Percy's phone why do I need a book?"
"Because it makes it mean more when its on paper and you can access it!"
Artemis sighed one more time before picking a rather plain looking notebook and a pack of colored pens. She ran her fingers across the spine and stared at the plain worn out brown cover. It reminded her of Zoe's old notebook that she used to tease the demititan about. Artemis had always found writing things down trivial when she could just remember them in her mind but Zoe had always claimed it helped organize her thoughts and understand her feelings better.
Artemis turned to Apollo with a raised eyebrow, "How are we paying for this?"
"Oh, I stole Percy's card."
"You stole what! Apollo no we can't use his card!" Artemis scolded going to put the things she gathered back but before she could Apollo grabbed it from her and started walking to the register.
"Trust me, Percy could careless that I'm spending his money on you. You don't even have to worry about it." Apollo called over his shoulder before greeting the cashier and paying for the supplies. Percy really needed to change his pin from his birthday, it was just to easy to get in.
Walking out the store with the bag in hand Artemis couldn't help the small smile gracing her lips. She hadn't planned for today to be spent like this but it was almost comical. Walking rather quickly to the food court after Apollo she was curious to see what else they we're going to do with their day. Probably do something stupid but Artemis couldn't find herself to care. It had been such a long time since she had done something like this with Apollo. Probably back when Rome was in an era of peace. Their duties we're lighter back then and they had time to hang out with one another.
Apollo held the door open for Artemis once again before making his way over to the Starbucks line. He had pushed his sunglasses up over his platinum blond hair and he was smiling brightly at the barista. Artemis raised an eyebrow because he didn't seem to be flirting but rather just being his natural charming self. Being mortal also seemed to help him relax from his duties. He didn't seem so fake about his happiness as he usually did. Probably because he wasn't being plagued with random prophecies.
"Hi yes can I get a Venti Iced Caramel Macchiato and then my sister will have a uh... do you guys have water?" Apollo asked curiously and Artemis nodded. A water would be nice. "As well as two cake pops, surprise us on the flavor please."
Stepping over to wait for their drinks Apollo pulled out a phone that Artemis swore he didn't have yesterday. She shook her head in amusement probably wondering what Poseidon was thinking when he sees the charges on the account. Of course it probably meant nothing to the God of the Sea. The amount of treasure he has in his reaches it outstanding. From priceless artifacts to actual gold lost at sea it was a wonder he wasn't named the God of wealth.
Artemis went to sit down while Apollo waited for their drinks and she pulled out the notebook that she had just got. She blinked once again remembering how much Zoe would write in these notebooks. Shaking her head she broke a pen out of the package and opened the notebook. She stared at the first page and winced.
"One day, My lady, We shall be able to be as free as we were in the olden days." Zoe whispered to the Goddess as they stared at the sunset. It was dipping below the Montana mountains and neither godly being realized that shortly they would be ripped from one another by a prophecy. Artemis would be stuck under the sky and Zoe will cross the country to save her where she will be gravely injured and succumb to her injuries.
"One day Zoe, you and I shall hunt until our hearts are content and then we will rest for as long as we need before doing it again."
Artemis shook her head and blinked away the tears. Apollo frowned at her and tilted his head slightly. "Are you okay, Artemis?"
At some point he had come back and set the water and this cake on a stick in front of her. "Yeah, Just thinking about Zoe."
Apollo winced slightly and reached out to pat her shoulder. He knew how much the former lieutenant had meant to Artemis. She had been the one thing that Artemis had been able to hold onto through out most of her Godly life. Zoe had watched Artemis grow into the Goddess she had become, had experienced the things that had built Artemis's character. Zoe had been her escape from the harsh coldness of godhood. Artemis furiously rubbed at her eyes and with dedication she started to write her first sentence in the notebook.
For our experiences you can no longer enjoy with me. For Zoe.
She smiled sadly at the writing before looking up at Apollo with a raised eyebrow. "So what now?"
"Well, What do you want to do with your short mortal life, little sister?"
Artemis bit her lip and tilted her head slightly. What did she want to do? Before she could think of something Apollo had grabbed the pen and notebook and flipped to the next page. Artemis watched him write a big number one with a box before it. In bold letters he wrote, "Experience freedom." Artemis smiled at him and he grinned back. The siblings loved each other very much, nothing could deny that.
Artemis went back to thinking about what she wanted to do with her life. She really wanted to go against her father's wish of seeing her hunters. That she couldn't help but want to do. She knew it would probably cause more time as a mortal but was that really the worst thing? She couldn't find it in herself to decide it was the worst thing that could probably happen to her.
"I want to see my hunters, even if it pisses dad off more. What do I have to lose at this moment?"
Apollo chuckled slightly and nodded repeating the same process of writing down what she wanted to do. Artemis put more thought into what she wanted to do, she wasn't exactly sure. Coming up with these ideas was not something that came easy to her.
"How about... I want to dance with someone to slow music. I know Percy and I already did that but it be nice to do it again."
Apollo got a very devious grin on his face and wrote, "Dance with Percy to slow songs (again)"
Artemis's jaw dropped and she punched his shoulder, her face bright red. She shook her head and started to list of more things. By the time they we're done they had a nice sized list and Apollo had wrote in big letters on the top "Things to do with Percy while trying not to fall in love."
1. See my hunters (fuck dad)
2. Slow dance with Percy
3. Go on a road trip
4. Read a book
5. Have an awkward dinner (why does she even want this? who knows - Apollo)
6. Ask (Interrogate) Sally Jackson on why her son is so nice and ask if she can write parenting books.
7. Go for a run in the rain
8. Have a movie marthon
9. Teach Percy archery
10. Go on a date with Percy -Apollo
Apollo grinned brightly down at the notebook and Artemis hid her face in her hands. She was embarrassed with some of the things he had wrote because Apollo had just added number ten. Artemis didn't know what to do for the last one and so he took matters into his own time. Apollo seemed pretty proud of himself that he had been able to write that without Artemis trying to kill him which helped further solidify the fact that Artemis liked him.
"Oh you're so fucked, you're gonna be head over heels for this man by the time he's done with you. Maybe you can convince him to accept immortality and please dad's nerves." Apollo laughed out but Artemis shook her head.
"Nothing could make Percy accept immortality. He denied it twice now, why would he accept it again? No, Godhood would not do him justice. The sea does not like to be restrained in the wise words of our uncle."
Apollo hummed slightly before Artemis's eyes went wide. "And I don't like Percy! I am a virgin goddess! There will be no liking Percy!"
Apollo burst out laughing before pulling out his phone and raising an eyebrow at her. "Okay lets put that to the test, mortals love making tests on the internet about these things. Let's take one!"
Artemis shrugged, what did she have to lose? Apparently, her pride.
Apollo let out a snort before asking the first question, "How do you feel when he looks at you or talks to you? A. OHMYGOD, he's talking to me! Ahhhh! B. I feel happier. C. The same as if any other person were doing it. D. I get a little nervous/excited."
"B"
Apollo smirked at his phone, "Do you do certain things/go certain places just to see him or to be with him? A. I do it sometimes. B. Hell, no! That's really creepy! C. I've done it maybe once or twice. D. Yes, yes, yes! I do that all the time"
Artemis narrowed her eyes, "What kind of gods awful questions are these, b."
Apollo let out a snort and winked at her, "Is he attractive? A. OHMYGODS, He's a freaking angel! B. yeah, he's pretty cute. C. Meh, I couldn't careless. D. He's hot!"
"B"
"If a friend said something bad about him, how would you feel/what would you say? A. I'd be a little offended, but nothing too bad. B. Whatever. C. No one can change the way I feel about him! D. Oh."
"D"
"How well do you know him? A. I barely know him. B. I know him pretty well. C. I have a few classes with him - I know him OK. D. I know every single little thing there is to know about him!"
Artemis scrunched her nose up and shook her head, "C."
"If someone else asked you out besides your protentional crush-"
"Whatever answer that says no."
"So A. I would never, ever, go out with anyone but this guy!"
Artemis let out a groan and hid her face in her hands in embarrassment. Why was Apollo like this?
"How would you feel if you saw him on a date with another girl. A. A tiny bit disappointed but I would shake it off quickly. B. I would be pretty sad. C. I would think good for him or D. I would run to the nearest bathroom and bawl my eyes out."
"C."
"If one of your friends liked him, what would you do? A. One of my friends would never like him! She knows all too well how I feel! B. I'd tell her how I felt about the guy and hope she wouldn't ask him out. C. I would think good for her or D. I'd be hesitant to say something nice."
"D."
"Okay second to last question, If the opportunity were to present itself would you tell him how you feel? A. Only if he liked me back. B. He already knows. C. Definitely not or D. What is there to tell?"
Artemis hesitated for a second before answering, "A."
Apollo grin got even bigger if that was possible and he asked the last question, "How many people did you have in mind while taking this? I'll answer for you, One."
Artemis laid her head on the table as Apollo started to laugh loudly. She shook her head and sighed loudly, what did she do to deserve this?
"It says I think you like him a little bit, but not enough to make a move." Apollo said with the brightest grin to his voice and Artemis groaned louder. She must have angered the fates to be stuck with him as brother.
Artemis and Apollo hung out some more, taking more stupid quizzes. At one point they did a who is your Godly parent and when Artemis got Demeter and Apollo got Aphrodite they decided that that was enough of this quiz for them. It was almost amusing how quickly they turned the phone off and decided that it was time to head back to the dorm. Artemis had still been thinking about what she was going to write in the diary but she had yet to decide. When she got to the dorm she decided she would put some effort into writing just a small entry. Just a start, for Zoe's sake. When Artemis got back to her dorm she smiled as she passed Percy who was on his way to the gym but otherwise she went into her room and collapsed on her bed.
She hadn't realized how much she enjoyed hanging out with Apollo. She really did enjoy the time she had spent with her brother even if he was crazy sometimes and pushed on her buttons she wouldn't be Artemis without Apollo. Looking at the time it read 2:43pm. She had been out with Apollo for awhile and she decided she was going to write in the notebook and take a nap. Changing into more comfortable clothes Artemis stared at the blank lines with a hesitance that she wasn't used too. Where would she even start? What could she even say? With an uncertain heart but a steady hand she started to write.
June 11th
I'm not sure how to write these types of things. It's almost hard to believe that you've been gone for a couple years now. I don't know what to say. You would always hunch over those stupid notebooks and write anything that came to mind. I never understood how you could do it, how you could sit there and write things down to collect your thoughts when my mind would race a million miles an hour with multiple thoughts and still retain what I was thinking. Now though I understand what you mean, being mortal is a humbling thing. Sitting here and writing this is almost therapeutic in a way. Although I don't understand it, I see what you meant. You always used to say that one day you we're going to teach me how to live like a mortal for even just a day. I've been a mortal for only a handful of days now but I have to be honest, I don't think I've ever felt so many emotions in my immortal life. Even when I held your dying body in my arms the emotions we're muted but this morning I have almost broke down multiple times at just your name. I am still trying to learn how to accept this mortal thing for however long I'll experience it but right now that stupid Son of Poseidon you had befriended is determined to make me understand what living a mortal life is like. It's almost... a relief. At first I thought this was going to be the worst time of my life but instead I've learned things I never would before. At night I find myself wondering what my life would have been if I had been mortal, If I had been born with the gift of a short lived life. Knowing that no matter what I did, one day I will find myself at my uncles gate. Watching Percy has made me understand this man and his motivations. It's almost hard to believe that although he has seen so much death and understands the implications of the losses he'll one day experience, he doesn't even bat an eye that one day he too will find himself breathing death. It's a beautiful feeling to know that ones end is inevitable but we shall meet them again. I wish that was a luxury I could afford, to see my fallen hunters one day.
Artemis blinked rapidly as tears dripped down her face. She brushed them off and quickly closed the notebook before setting it on her nightstand. She wanted a nap and she'll be damned if she wasn't going to get a nap.
WHEW! Now that's a long chapter. I've been writing it for a solid two and a half hours. I apologize if it's a bit repetitive but I am falling into a groove on what I'm planning to do. I'm planning to get this romance on the road here y'all! I wanted Artemis to fall first and give Percy issues with it because 1. You never see Pertemis books like that and 2. I just think it will fit the end game better! Thank you for reading again. Please feel free to review, criticism and ideas are always welcome!
