Just a warning, this chapter is pretty dark, and a brief mention of sexism

Sirius Black was lying down on a plain bed, and moonlight shone in from outside the window. He looked so much younger in his sleep… I found myself staring at his features, from the piece of hair that fell over his closed eye, to his steady breathing.

Monifa nudged me, silently laughing. I shook my head at her, and we walked over to where Sirius was sleeping. James poked his cheek, and his eyes sprung open. We all put our fingers to our lips, and he rushed straight up to me and flung his arms around me. He looked like he was crying in joy. James held the two brooms up, and Sirius grabbed one of them.

I went to climb on behind James, but Monifa pushed me onto the broom Sirius was climbing onto and went behind James herself, pulling a face at me.

Sirius opened the window, then zoomed out, me behind him, James and Monifa right behind us. Sirius let out a triumphant cry.

"THANK YOU!" he yelled out.

"What were they doing?" Monifa asked.

"They were telling me that Regulus, my younger brother was a much better son then me… they were using the Cruciatus curse on me, telling me I was a disgrace to the family name, that I deserved nothing but death for being in Gryffindor, breaking the family tradition…" said Sirius, his voice shaking slightly. "You got my code, then? Thank you, and sorry… I just couldn't take it anymore."

"Don't say sorry," I said, trying to grip onto the broom, but my sweaty hands kept slipping off the wood, giving me splinters.

"Hold on to me," said Sirius. "Don't worry, I don't bite, I'm not a werewolf."

My stomach flipped, and I grabbed onto his waist. Did he just make a werewolf reference? I tried to stay calm and act normal, but I felt panic rising in me.

"Can I come back with you all?" Monifa asked, pulling another face at me as I held onto Sirius.

"Yeah, sure," said James, flying faster.

We all buzzed with chatter, talking about our summers so far, and plans for next year at Hogwarts.

"I'm going to join the Quidditch team," said James.

"I'm going to join it with you," said Sirius.

"I want to join the team for my house," said Monifa. "I want to be the first female player in Slytherin Quidditch team's history."

"What, they've never had a girl on the team before?" I asked.

"They're pretty -sexist," Monifa explained. "They believe that Quidditch is only for the boys, and girls won't be as skilled as them."

"Well that's stupid," said Sirius. "There's girls on all the other teams, and they're all really talented."

"I know," said Monifa. "I want to make the team on behalf of all the women in the world who may have been told they can't do something because of their gender. I want to prove all the sexist people wrong."

"Well, I hope you're ready to be smashed," said James. "Because the Gryffindor team will absolutely pulverise you."

"Oh, we'll see about that," Monifa said, grinning.

"You know we'll beat you—" Sirius started, but he was interrupted by James.

"Shh!" he said, glancing over his shoulder, then his voice dropped so low that I could barely hear him. "Don't look back, but there's a creepy looking guy on a broom behind us."

The temptation to look back was almost painful, but I continued looking forward, as we started moving faster. But then I gave in, glancing back slightly to see the man… but it wasn't a man… it was Fenrir Greyback.

"Go faster!" I shouted, and Sirius and James both sped up, but then Greyback was in between our two brooms. We all screamed, and he grabbed both Monifa and I, then jumped.

Monifa and I were screaming as we fell through the cold air, Greyback holding us both to his chest tightly. We were about to hit the floor, when Greyback apparated mid-air, bringing us both with him. We appeared at a cave, and Greyback threw us to the ground.

Monifa grabbed my arm and started to run, but then Greyback pointed his wand at us, and we were both knocked to the floor.

There were a few dozen people around, but I could smell that they were all werewolves. I closed my eyes, trying not to think of what they could do to Monifa and I.

"Well, well, well," said Greyback. He put his foot on Monifa's face.

"GET YOUR FOOT OFF ME!" Monifa shouted. "IT STINKS AND IT'S UGLY!"

"What's your name, little Miss?" Greyback shouted, grabbing onto Monifa and me so we couldn't move.

"LET US GO!" she shouted.

"I asked what your name was," said Greyback. "Mine's Fenrir Greyback. Answer me now." When Monifa didn't respond, he pointed his wand at her, and said, "CRUCIO!"

Monifa screamed out, and stammered, "Monifa… Monifa Blanchet!"

"Lovely screams, thank you," said Greyback, stopping the curse and putting his wand away. He lifted us both up, then threw us into a dark cave, and pushed a rock in front of us with his wand. I stood up and tried to punch on the rock.

"What does he want from us?" Monifa asked, shaking.

"Monifa, that's Fenrir Greyback," I said.

"Yeah, he said that," she said.

"He's a werewolf," I said quietly.

She fell silent, looking at me with fear in her eyes. "He's not a nice werewolf, is he?

I shook my head, my hands curling into fists. "He preys on young children, turning them into werewolves… bites them when they're young and forces them to join his pack."

"He bit you, didn't he?" she said. "D-do you live here?"

"No," I said. "After he bit me my parents managed to come in to my room before I died or he could take me."

"Is he going to bite me!?" she cried. "I don't want to be a werewolf, like no offence, but I don't…"

"I think if he bites you he'd let you die," I explained. "Because you're old enough to know better than joining the pack."

"So… so all the people out there, they're his pack, aren't they?" she said. "So they've all been bitten as children and don't know any better than the pack… oh, that's absolutely awful! And even just being a werewolf and not being in the pack, living in a society which shuns you and fears you… I-I'm so sorry you have to put up with that."

"It's OK," I said. "But… we really need to get out of here."

"Ugh, do you have your wand?" she said. "I left mine at home, I wasn't expecting…"

"I didn't bring mine," I said. "My parents confiscated my wand for the summer to make sure I didn't do underage magic."

"Ugh," she said. "What are we meant to do!? Try and bash down the rock?"

"Yeah and break our fists," I muttered. I walked over to the rock that Greyback had placed in front of the entrance to the cave and tried to push it out of the way. Monifa joined me and the two of us pushed it with everything we had, but it didn't budge.

"It's no use," she groaned. "What are they going to do, just leave us here to starve?"

"I doubt it," I said. The cave was dark, but my eyes had finally fully adjusted to the light. Then I saw the rock move back.

"One move and I'll kill you both," said a voice there was a man holding a wand. "Girl, come with me."

"I'm not going with you," said Monifa, but then the man grabbed her and dragged her out of the cave.

"NO!" I shouted, but then Fenrir Greyback was coming into the cave and the rock was shut behind him. "No…"

"Yes," he said smiling. "Why, Remus Lupin, I haven't seen you since you were just four years old."

I stepped back, but he stepped towards me, saying, "Haven't you missed me? Isn't it tiring being a wolf living in the conditions of a human?"

"I'm not joining your pack," I said, trying to sound braver than I felt. "Just let us go, now."

"Have you checked your calendar recently, Remus?" Greyback asked. I was against the wall, with him standing in front of me. "ANSWER ME!"

"No, I haven't," I stuttered. "I… I don't usually check my calendars when I'm at home… I just know it's July."

"It's the very early hours of July 26th, son," he said.

"I am not your son— oh. Oh, shit."

"Tonight's the full moon," he said, grinning.

I shook my head, feeling tears coming to my eyes. "No… please… don't do anything to- lock yourself up, please…"

"You can't control what I do," Greyback said, "I control what you do, I'm the one who gave you your gift."

"It's not a gift," I spat. "It's a curse."

"Well then use your curse with us," said Greyback. "Your human friends, they wouldn't understand. If they found out the truth of what you are, they'd call you a monster. But not us, we'll embrace you as a brother. You're one of us, Remus."

I shook my head. "No…"

"Your parents don't understand," he said. "They'll never understand you like we can." I looked at the ground. "LOOK AT ME!" Shaking, I looked up at the other werewolf. He touched my chin with his sharp claws, sneering. "So weak for what you are. You're meant to be a beast, but what are you? Just some little puppy."

"SHUT UP!" I shouted, my voice trembling.

"I could just kill you right now if I wanted," he said, drawing his wand. "And your little friend out there."

"Please don't," I said quietly. "Please just let us go."

"I'll let your friend go and let you live," he said, his smiling twisting, "if you join the pack. I'll give you some time to think." He removed the rock and closed it behind him as he left, leaving me alone in the dark cave.

I sat down in the corner of the cave and cupped my face in my hands. I sat there for an hour straight, until I heard a sound. Screaming. I recognised it as Monifa's screams, coming from outside the cave. I stood up and started banging on the walls of the cave. There was almost complete silence following this, along with some muffled screaming.

They were going to kill her… they were probably torturing her now to kill her the following night on full moon…

I let out a scream myself, feeling helpless. There was only one thing I could do. I had to join the pack.

Greyback didn't come back to the cave until the evening, about five minutes before the moon was scheduled to come out. He didn't say anything, but he was clutching onto Monifa, and chucked her into the cave at my feet, then pushed the rock in front of the cave again.

Monifa looked awful: she was bleeding, her shirt was slightly ripped, and her long, curly hair was a mess.

"Monifa!" I cried. "What happened?"

She shook her head firmly, then said slowly, "It doesn't matter."

"Monifa! It does matter, it—"

Just then, I felt my legs give way. My entire body started shaking as excruciating pain shot through my body.

"Remus…" Monifa whispered, stepping back from me, shaking her head.

"Run," I whispered, my voice sounding hoarse.

"I can't!" she said, looking around at the walls of the cave and stepping back again.

Once I was full in my werewolf form I ran straight at her. I pinned her to the floor, and bit at her, once, then twice, then three times. I continued to bite her, over and over, not being able to control myself, but I was feeling worse than I'd felt in my entire life.

The night must of come to an end eventually, and when it did, I looked down to Monifa. I'd literally torn her apart. She was drenched in blood, and looking up at me, her eyes full of pain.

"No," I sobbed. "What have I done…?"

"It's OK," she said. Her voice was so quiet, her breathing shallow. Blood was pouring out of her at a rapid pace.

"Monifa, I'm so sorry!" I cried.

"You can't control it," she whispered. A tear fell out of her eye. "You were such a great friend, Remus."

She smiled at me, and then she went still, her eyes glassy. I put my hand on her chest. Her heart had stopped.

I'd killed her.
