Next chapter. I have some plans for the next arc so please read the bottom authors notes.
Also, a lot of people responded on the 'Jaune transcripts' thing so I should weigh in. The biggest counter-argument was that the others did some borderline to outright illegal shit too so Jaune shouldn't get singled out.
That's not really an argument since saying 'well everyone kinda sucks' doesn't absolve Jaune. I've discussed elsewhere that Yang should've gotten in trouble for her bar brawl, that team RWBY should've been punished severely (if not expelled) for the highway mech fight, and that Blake shouldn't have been able to get away with just running off from her terrorist group.
Also, my main argument was two things. The first is that Jaune not only places himself in danger but also his teammates. In a world like this you need to be able to rely on your teammates and yet you can't trust Jaune to do so due to his lack of combat skills. He's really lucky that Pyrrha was his partner since not only was she strong enough to make up for his deficiencies but was kind enough to not get pissed he lied and put the rest of the team at risk because he wanted to be a hero. She even offered to train him and he rejected it out of pride.
The second was that I didn't like the 'Jaune expelled' fics making the other characters assholes and Jaune being 'right' in cheating. The dude has no leg to stand on and yet the stories will go out of his way to say Jaune's right and anyone who complains about the literal cheater is wrong and needs to get their heads out of their ass.
I do still like Jaune, I wouldn't have made so many long fics with him as the MC if I didn't, but he's a flawed character that cared more about playing hero early on than actually doing good and didn't think through the consequences of his actions. The story shouldn't be afraid to call him out on it.
Jaune opened the door to their room and was immediately met with Ruby running up to him, "I've got an idea!" She looked up at him with wide, determined silver eyes and he took a step back from the intensity of her gaze. He'd only known Ruby for a couple of days, but he already figured she was someone who wore her heart on her sleeve. He liked that about her.
"Uh...cool?" Jaune responded warily.
"Yep!" She walked back into the room, sat on her bed and patted the space next to her. Jaune looked around warily as if expecting Blake or Weiss to pop out of nowhere. He didn't know them as well as he did Ruby and he didn't like the idea of them walking in and misunderstanding something. Weiss already didn't like the rest of the team for some reason and Blake looked at all of them like she was expecting to get stabbed.
And then there was him, the guy with the fake transcripts and the voice in his head.
"Please don't act as if the two are in any way related. That bit of foolishness was all your doing."
'Oh, shut up. I didn't ask you to be here.'
"And yet you were all too willing to take advantage of my presence to prop up your lie." Jaune winced, "You do understand that you do actually have to justify your presence here, yes? Glynda might have brushed aside your transcripts, but if you fail to prove your worth she won't let you stay. At best she will shuffle you off to Vale so you can keep in contact as needed. Nothing about my presence demands you stay in Beacon."
'I'm working on it!'
"How? You've no training, preparation and, if I hadn't unlocked it myself, Aura. You would've died in that forest." The words were cutting and Jaune hated that he had no response to that, "I've seen your type before. People who desired to be heroes and yet showed none of the resolve to actually work for it. You're more common than you probably realize, Jaune Arc."
'Why are you being such an asshole?'
"I'm trapped in your mind and Salem is now a parasite in an innocent soul. Forgive me for being in a foul mood."
"Jaune?" Ruby asked, cutting his internal conversation short, "Are you alright?"
"Y-Yeah, just...well, talking." He sat down next to her and tried not to let Ozpin's words get to him. Yes, he was aware cheating his way in wasn't the best idea, but he was here now and he was gonna make the most out of it.
"Is he yelling at you too?" Ruby frowned sympathetically.
"Not...exactly." Jaune shook his head, "Uh, so what's your idea?"
"Right, so we're not gonna let these voices win!" Ruby said, expression determined, "These are our lives they're messing with and I refuse to back down!"
"It appears she's already gotten the view of me as a sort of boogeyman." Ozpin sighed.
"Hey, uh, Ozpin's not that bad," Jaune defended feebly, "I mean he's kinda bossy, but I think he really just hates Salem. And from what you told me about her he's not actually wrong to feel that way." Apparently she'd been telling Ruby to kill him over and over and over. If his partner wasn't so nice he'd be scared cause she could absolutely decapitate him with that scythe of hers.
"Oh, she absolutely would. If she's anything like her mother then you don't stand a chance."
"Well, they're still in ours heads and we didn't consent to them being there. They are consent-less!" Well...she kinda had a point there, "And as the owners of our bodies, which I've been taught are temples, we shouldn't let them change who we are and what we do! If I wanna eat cookies then no voice in my head is gonna tell me no!"
"Uh...yeah! Totally!" Ruby's enthusiasm was infectious.
"I'm glad you agree! So let's do this!"
And then she held out her left hand. Jaune looked at the small, smooth palm and scratched the back of his head, "Uh...I don't have any Lien on me right now."
"No, you dummy!" She slapped his shoulder then held out her hand again, "For some reason whenever we touch it feels like we're being zapped." Jaune nodded. He did notice that, yes. Ozpin didn't know the reason either. Then again this was apparently the first time this Salem woman had jumped into someone's head, "But I refuse to let some voice in my head say what I can and can't do, so let's hold hands!"
"Ruby...we're gonna get zapped if we do that."
"I know, but we have to power through it, Jaune! These are our bodies and no voices in our heads can say otherwise!" She held her hand out more insistently, "If we wanna prove that they don't control us, then we've gonna ignore the zapping! It makes sense!"
It really didn't, but for some reason Jaune found himself agreeing anyway, "Alright, let's do it." Ruby's beaming smile made him grin weakly in turn. At least she was determined about it.
The smiles lasted only until heir hands touched. Immediately it felt like he'd been shocked and it was only Ruby's suddenly firm grip that kept him from pulling back, "Don't give up, Jaune! We can do this!" She met his eyes with a look of utter determination and their faces were only inches apart. In any other situation he might've blushed "Say it with me! Our bodies are ours! Our bodies are ours! Our bodies are ours!"
"O-Our bodies are ours!" he shouted back hysterically. Oh Gods, it hurt so much! It felt like a million volts was running through his hand.
"That's it! That'll show them!" Ruby's voice had, somehow, even gotten more high pitched than normal. She was feeling the strain too, "Our bodies are- ow, ow, ow! Dang it, mom! This isn't working!"
"...How utterly foolish."
He was about to tell Ozpin to shut the hell up and that this was painful enough without the commentary until he realized that the voice was unmistakably female. And unless Ozpin had a sex change in the last few seconds, he only had one guess on who that was.
"Salem," Ozpin snarled.
"Ozma? You can hear me?" The woman's shock was quickly replaced by rage, "Of course. Our unwilling hosts' contact has established a bridge. Well then, this is convenient. I have a lot of things to say to you and you shall-"
"What are you two idiots doing?" The voice of one very irate Weiss Schnee cut in. Their heads snapped to the side and the temporary break in concentration was enough for their hands to finally separate. The loss of the pain almost made him cry out in relief.
"N-Nothing!" Ruby squeaked.
"You do realize I have eyes and I'm not stupid, correct?" Weiss sighed in frustration, "If you two wish to indulge in pointless lewd actions, then could you please do it where your roommates won't walk in on you? It's only common courtesy."
"W-We weren't doing anything lewd!" Jaune shouted back, his face flushed. It wasn't embarassment but rather the fact that his arm was numb and he'd spent the past minute gritting his teeth so hard it was a miracle he hadn't shattered his jaw.
"Yeah, what he said!" Ruby added.
Weiss looked at the two of them with their flushed faces, sweaty bodies, and the pinpricks of tears in their eyes. Then she shook her head in utter disappointment and trudged to the bathroom without another word.
They didn't have long to dwell on their embarassment before Ruby winced pressed a hand against her forehead, "Are you alright?" Jaune asked.
"Y-Yeah, just...she's yelling about how we stopped holding hands right before she could tell Ozpin 'words unsaid for thousands of years'." A pause, and then Ruby shouted, "Well if you had a thousand years then maybe you should've told him sooner! It's not my fault you're lazy!"
"Haha. Salem always was a petty little thing." Again, Jaune had to stop himself from pointing out that was rich coming from what he did at breakfast, "And oh, I have words of my own to say to her. Hold her hand again, Jaune. I want to see if I can kill her twice."
'Weren't you just saying about how petty she was?'
"She is."
'But you're doing the exact same thing!'
"Not true. Salem is simply a petty wastrel and a sore loser. I, on the other hand, have earned the chance to air out my grievances and scorn. So come now, hold Ms. Rose's hand and let me utterly destroy Salem in verbal warfare. By the time I'm done even her father will feel the sting."
"So...we're not gonna hold hands again for at least a while, right? Cause Ozpin kinda wants me to do that now so he can talk to Salem."
"Yep, her too." Ruby winced again, "Ugh, stupid voices..."
"Oh, now that I'm supportive you choose to not be sensible?" Ozpin scoffed, "A little pain never killed anybody, Jaune."
'Yes, it did! I'm pretty sure pain's killed a lot of people!'
"And yet you chose the life of a Huntsman, which includes taking pain, but now that I ask for a minor request you deny me because 'it hurts too much'? You are a bundle of contradictions, Mr. Arc."
'People don't go out hoping to get chomped by Grimm! Pretty sure they try to avoid that!'
"And yet you were all too eager to do so when Ms. Rose asked." He sighed, sounding way too close to a disappointed father for Jaune's liking, "Teenage hormones are a difficult thing to deal with, as I well know from experience. At least our enforced separation allows for less awkward urges on my end.'
'I-I wasn't thinking anything like that!'
"Oh please, there's no point in denial. Thankfully for us both I'm not a lecherous old pervert like Salem is. Have you seen the minions she surrounds herself with? There's a reason she has Mr. Callows in her confidence, and I'm sure it has a lot to do with how he calls her goddess and worships the ground she walks on. It wouldn't surprise me if she has him kiss her feet. She always asked me to-"
'I really don't need to know that.' Jaune groaned. Judging by how Ruby was practically flopping on the bed she wasn't having any luck with her new passenger either, 'Let's just...drop it, alright? I do NOT need that mental image in my head.' Or the image of Ruby as some kind of evil queen commanding her minions of EVIL.
"Ugh. Well, that was a bust." Ruby sat up and huffed.
"What now?"
"I dunno. Mom told me to fight through it and I thought showing them we won't let them choose what we do would help with that, but now they want us to hold hands again just so they can yell at each other." Ruby sighed, "This sucks! I don't know what to do anymore! I just want Salem out and I want to tell people, but I know if I tell anyone they're just gonna think I'm crazy!"
"Uh...maybe not." He looked at the bathroom where was, judging by the sounds, showering. Probably should've had this conversation elsewhere a while ago, "Let's go talk somewhere more private."
Glynda Goodwitch was a woman who often questioned her choices in life. When she was entrusted into Ozpin's confidence she felt both proud and shattered. To know that it wasn't just the Grimm, criminals and politics that plagued Remnant but an honest to goodness immortal Grimm Queen that made it her sole mission to destroy everything they held dear.
It made it difficult to continue at times. Many in her place would've gone mad at the revelation, and more still would've ran with their tail between their legs. That was what Raven did, the coward, taking all her knowledge, training, and even part of Ozpin's magic in order to play bandit in the woods. Or 'legitimate Huntress protection', to use her words. To her credit, she didn't raid villages so much as demand protection money in exchange for protecting them from Grimm and other criminals.
It would've been admirable if the prices weren't literally cutthroat.
Shaking her head once more, she finished off her glass of brandy and looked out of the high window. The view allowed her a generous view of the Emerald Forest. She never imagined herself being the headmistress, at least not until her own hair had gone gray like Ozpin's, and yet here she was. The transition was sudden and led to more than a few rumors, but Ozpin was convinced that his mission - which he'd insisted on taking alone despite all their offers for aid - would be a one way trip.
Glynda massaged her forehead and leaned back on the chair. As odd as Mr. Arc's circumstances were, and she was still boiling from what Ozpin had used as proof of his presense, a part of her was glad that Ozpin, in one way or another, was back. He was a dear friend despite their occasional disagreements and the thought of him dying in the Grimmlands alone and in pain made her heart ache. She only hoped that this odd new circumstance meant Mr. Arc also wasn't at risk of his mind being overtaken.
And Salem's new host...
She turned and brought up Ruby Rose's student file on her computer screen. Ruby Rose, a prodigy student from Signal and a Silver Eyed Warrior. She'd had her doubts about letting the girl enroll so early, especially given her reckless actions against Roman Torchwick, but it was one of Ozpin's requests before he left. He was an old friend of Taiyang Xiao Long and Summer Rose and they'd been two of his most consistent allies before the elder Rose's sworn retirement.
And now their daughter was the host of all those she fought against. She had to make some calls.
She took the elevator down into Beacon's lowest depths and made her way to the personalized CCT console. Electronic communication was convenient but it also meant the possibility of being hacked and eavesdropped. Aside from messenger birds or snail mail, which took far too long, the only other option available to them was doing their utter best to shield themselves.
A quick call soon put her into contact with both James and Leonardo. She would've called Qrow as well but she knew from experience that he'd be at the outskirts for at least another week or two and wouldn't have signal. Besides, that was a conversation more suited to a face-to-face meeting.
"Glynda, is something wrong?" James asked.
"In a manner of speaking." She pursed her lips, "I need you both to come to Beacon as soon as you can. It's about her."
"I see..." Leonardo sighed wearily, "I'd hoped that Ozpin's plan would succeed, but..."
"It is...complicated." She coughed, "Ozpin is still with us. He's back at Beacon with another host by the name of Jaune Arc."
"Then he perished in the attempt." James frowned in sympathy, "We all urged him that he couldn't do this alone."
"It wasn't a failure, at least not fully." That got both their attentions, "Ozpin is here...and so is Salem. She-"
"What?!" James stood up from his seat and slammed his hand to the desk, "Glynda, you need to evacuate the students now! I'll muster up as much men and resources as I can, so just-""
"If you would let me finish, James." Glynda cut in. She adored his determination, but a lot of the time it often led to tunnel vision, "I wouldn't be so calm if Salem was battering down our doors right now, would I?"
"Then...do you mean something else besides Salem's presence?" Leonardo asked nervously.
"In a manner of speaking. You're both aware of how Ozpin resurrects himself." By overtaking the minds of like-minded individuals. Ozpin had told her once in a vulnerable moment that he despised himself for it. That even though he knew the Brothers had forced the burden onto him it did little to assuage the guilt he felt as those he befriended becamse just another incarnation, "It appears that Salem has done the same."
"What?!" James shouted, "That is...Oz has never told us she could do that."
"He wasn't aware she could either. Judging from what he told me, it was a side-effect of his attempt to kill her." It didn't surprise her that he attempted it in a roundabout way. James was convinced that Salem was a foe that could be beaten in conventional warfare, but if it were so easy then she would've been defeated long before any of them were born.
"So this, um, host is in Beacon now?" Leonardo asked.
"Yes, she is."
"Alright, then have her contained by any means necessary. I'll take Specialist Schnee and the Ace Ops-with me and-"
"You will do no such thing. Ms. Rose is an innocent in this conflict." James paused in recognition of the name, "Yes, I mean Taiyang Xiao-Long and Summer Rose's child."
"But how? Ozpin always reincarnated into like-minded hosts, does this mean that Ms. Rose is..."
"No, or at least I don't believe so. She's reckless and eager, but not malevolent. As Ozpin said, Salem jumping bodies in the same way he has is an unexpected variable. And if I'm being honest, I believe that this Arc has little in common with our old friend either. Ozpin cannot possess him the same way he has his previous hosts. His attempts to kill Salem have evidently left its mark on their souls."
"Innocent or not, we cannot ignore this."
"I'm not, James," her tone softened, "I'm keeping an eye on Ms. Rose and Mr. Arc is, as serendipity would have it, her partner. Who better to keep watch on her than the man who's spent centuries as her rival?" That seemed to calm James down, Leonardo less so. He was always the more wary of their circle, "I'm not saying you can't both make preparations, but right now treating Ms. Rose as if she's a criminal solves nothing."
"If Ozpin cannot take over this young man then how do you know it's him?" Leonardo asked.
"He knew things that only Ozpin would know." Her cheeks dusted pink despite her best efforts, and judging by James' expression he caught on to what said things were, "From what Arc's told us, the two of them can hear their voices, but apart from that both Ozpin and Salem can do little else. If we're lucky then it'll stay that way in the forseeable future for Ms. Rose."
"So...what do we do?" Leonardo asked.
"I'd like you both to come here. We need to talk to both Ms. Rose and Mr. Arc about their situation. James, you can bring along Specialist Schnee or the Ace-Ops, but please don't use them as a battering ram. Their presence is only to be in case anything goes wrong." She glared at him and he nodded reluctantly, "And Leonardo...I'd like you to take Raven Branwen with you."
"A-Are you sure? You know she's not very...keen to answer our calls." He brought hand across his suddenly sweaty forehead.
"I'm well aware of that, but she's involved whether she likes it or not." She closed her eyes briefly. Raven was, quite frankly, a bitch, but it was better to have her controlled than not, "I'll inform the rest of Ms. Rose's family when I can. I'll see you both soon."
She terminated the call and almost made to leave before another idea struck her. Both Salem and Ozpin were trapped in Ms. Rose and Mr. Arc's minds, respectively. Perhaps there was a way to contact Ozpin more directly.
She needed to make one last call.
"Headmistress. I trust there's a reason you're calling."
"Shion. Beacon's in need of your assistance."
"Hmm. I'll be there when I'm able."
"Shit...shit!"
Leonardo Lionheart, headmaster of Haven Academy and experienced Huntsman, was almost literally shitting himself.
When the seer Salem had 'entrusted' him had died he thought he was free. He wasn't aware of Ozpin's plan to take down Salem until after the fact, and in many ways that was a mixed blessing. If he knew then he would've been compelled to tell his mistress. Or he would've made some pathetic attempt at rebellion by keeping his mouth shut, but he knew that wasn't likely. He'd made his choice long ago.
And now Salem was in the mind of some Huntress. Still alive. He didn't know whether to laugh or cry. He was supposed to meet with the rest of them to discuss the circumstances of this Ms. Rose. Glynda said they were separate, but how could she be sure? What if she shared Salem's memories? What if she took one look at him and realized that he was a traitor? What if Salem ordered the girl to make contact with him and outed his secret?
No, it couldn't end like this! He'd come too far and sacrificed too much (and too many...) to be outed by some...schoolgirl! He had to find a way out of this. He needed to survive.
Rose, that was the name Glynda said. She had to do research, to plan. Perhaps killing her would allow Salem to either jump to another body or, if he was lucky, kill her permanently. Either Salem would be grateful or she would be gone; and both outcomes saved his life. He shook his head. No, he had to be cautious about this. No one knew and he was planning to keep it that way.
Leonardo Lionheart made a call. There was someone else who needed to know. Someone who was already in Vale and planning to steal the powers of the Maiden right from under Glynda's nose.
"Lionheart, I hope you have a good reason for calling."
"Cinder...there's been a development."
Ruby's thoughts were muddled after what Jaune told her. So apparently Salem wasn't just a jerk but also an immortal Grimm Queen who did a whole boatload of horrible things. No, that was an understatement. General Lagune from the Faunus wars did horrible things. Salem was a monster.
"Your mind reels at knowledge. Pathetic."
'Shut up! You're just...some villain that's hurt so many people! You're a monster!'
"I am a woman cursed by the gods for wanting to reunite with my love."
The utter lack of shame in Salem's words only made Ruby angrier. When Ruby did something wrong she felt guilty, at least most of the time. How many people had Salem hurt - or killed - without even thinking about it?
But right now all she could think about was why her? Why did Salem end up in her head? She didn't do anything wrong! Okay so maybe she snuck more cookies than was healthy, and maybe she took out bumblebee and crashed it over a cliff once or twice, but she was a good person! She wanted to be a Huntress to help people and now she had the queen of all evil in her head!
"It is not a pleasant circumstance for me either."
The only bright spot was that Salem didn't like this. She deserved to go to prison forever; she just wished that prison wasn't her head.
She was so busy grumbling and arguing that she almost missed the call, "Ruby Rose and Weiss Schnee to the arena!" The reaper blinked and looked up to see her and Weiss' face matched up on the screen. Huh? "Ms. Rose, please go to the locker rooms and change into your combat gear." Professor Peach said.
"U-Uh, right!" Ruby hopped up from the chair and followed Weiss into the changing rooms. Was it normal to fight against your partners? She knew combat class was random, but still.
The door barely shut behind them before Weiss turned around and pointed a finger straight at her nose, "Let me make one thing clear, Rose." Weiss said, eyes narrowed, "I have no idea why you were chosen to be the leader and I don't care. You've done nothing to earn it and I'm going to prove it out there. When everyone sees how clumsy you are I'm sure the teachers will understand when I ask them to reconsider."
Ruby was about to point that that she hadn't done anything to earn being the leader either when the heiress turned around and walked over to her locker. Ruby grit her teeth and silently changed into her combat uniform. She wanted to get along with all of her teammates, but Weiss was being a butt and Blake barely ever talked to them. The only one she got along with was Jaune and they both had voices in their heads.
"I suggest teaching her a lesson. Disrespect cannot be tolerated no matter who you are."
For once, Ruby agreed.
The fight started off in her favor. Ruby rushed ahead and swung her scythe directly at Weiss' face. Her teammate's eyes widened at the speed of the attack and she barely managed to duck under the swing. Yang cheered her on too while the rest of team YLNN tried to cheer for them both.
"Go, Ruby!" Jaune cheered and she felt a swell of pride in her chest. Blake cheered for Weiss too, but it was obviously forced and she didn't even look up from her book to do it.
"Cheering from Ozma's host. It's sickening."
The fight lasted for a couple of more minutes with the two echanging blows and chipping away at each other's Auras. Weiss hit more, but Ruby did more damage. By the time they were in the yellow Ruby had changed tactics from melee to a barrage of bullets. Weiss dodged the bullets and placed a glyph under her own feet. Ruby was in the middle of reloading when the heiress suddenly surged forward, sword pointed right at her chest.
Ruby spun Crescent Rose around and prepared an unpward slash when she suddenly felt a burst of power coarse through her body. Just before Weiss made contact, the surge stopped at her palms and made her drob her baby, leaving her to just raise up both palms to stop Weiss' charge.
"What is going-"
"Ahhh!" Weiss flailed around as she suddenly found herself floating in the air ten feet away from Ruby. In-between them emanating from Ruby's palms was a multi-colored beam of energy that kept Weiss suspended. The older girl struggled and flailed, but all it managed to do was knock her upside down and even more helpless, "Ruby Rose, put me down right now!" she shrieked. Thank the gods for combat skirts.
Everyone was looking at her now. Oh Gods, everyone was looking at her! What did she do?! Was was this?!
Ruby closed her palms, hoping that would be enough to stop whatever the heck this was. It did. Sort of. Weiss was suddenly flung clear outside the arena and smacked against the walls, her Aura going from yellow to red from the force of the impact.
Everyone kept staring at her. Ruby did her best to ignore them all and looked to Jaune. The blonde looked just as confused as she was, but that only lasted for a moment before his attention shifted elsewhere. Ozpin must've been telling him what happened.
"You have my magic," Salem said. The seeting rage in the words made Ruby shiver, "It's bad enough that you keep me confined and don't obey, but now you've taken the last gift I ever truly had! You will pay for this, Ruby Rose! You shall-"
"Winner, Ruby Rose," Professor Peach said. She looked just as stunned as the rest of the students but still made an effort to keep a calm front, "Ms. Schnee, do you require medical attention?"
"No." Weiss shook her head and glared at Ruby. She'd just been embarassed and her plans to show Ruby were ruined, but the reaper barely paid her teammate any mind and just looked down at her plams. Salem called it magic. First she had a voice in her head and now she could do magic?!
Ruby's head spun and she trudged back to the locker room. Oh Gods, what was gonna happen next?
Ruby has magic. Oh dear, I'm sure that will in no way cause problems for anyone or cause Weiss to be even more jealous and angry at Ruby. And also we've got the other adults now aware of what's happening with her. I'm sure everyone is going to be perfectly reasonable and it will in no way lead to conflict.
Questions:
1. So I'm thinking of skipping the docks fight and doing a Nightmare arc instead. Big question - who should be the victim? Since we've already seen Jaune and Weiss' nightmares in extended detail, I'm torn between Ruby or Blake. Ruby being the victim allows Salem to appear in a more actively antagonistic role but leaves Ruby as a damsel to be saved with limited interactions. Blake being the victim shows more of her past and Ruby can work with Jaune as a pair, but Salem and Ozma's appearances in the dreamscape are more limited to talking.
2. Which alternate host omake do you guys wanna see first? I'm thinking of doing something small with Nora that isn't exactly like her being a host and is played more for horror comedy. Who else are you guys interested in? I also put up a poll on my fanfiction profile for those interested.
Review Answers:
OldGlory - Yeah, Raven and Summer were never friends here. Even when crippled Summer thinks she can spank Raven.
Chuck B. Winanaki - Handholding definitely did something with the voices, but it didn't power them down...
RadBman21 - Even without Salem, Raven abandoned Yang. Hard to reconcile 17 years of abandonment.
Rivera92 - It's implied the reason neither can take control is because of what Ozpin did to try and perma-kill them both.
