Chapter 11 - Yami

One sunny weekend at Rito's house.

In the kitchen, Mikan is teaching Yami how to cook soup. Yami stirs the pot with a ladle, and pours a sample for Mikan. She tastes the steaming broth, and enjoys it.

"Mmm, this is perfect, Yami. You've got it down for sure," says Mikan.

"Thank you, Mikan," says Yami.

"And I'm sure Rito will enjoy it too," teases Mikan.

"P-Please don't make fun of me," says Yami whilst blushing.

"But he sure is taking his time. I know training with Mea and Nemesis is important to him, but even so, with that Stem jerk still out there, I..." says Mikan with an anxious expression.

"You're worried about him," notes Yami.

"Of course, he's my brother," answers Mikan.

Yami pats Mikan's shoulder. "He'll be fine, Mikan. If anything happens, Mea and Nemesis will protect him. And I'll be there in a flash to protect him too," she promises.

"You'll protect him because he's my brother, or because you love him?" asks Mikan with a warm smile.

"Y-You're making fun of me again," says Yami, blushing even redder.

"Haha, just a little. Anyway, thank you, Yami. If anyone can keep Rito safe, I know you can," says Mikan.

Yami stares at her for a moment. "Mikan, there's something I've been wanting to ask you," she says.

"Uh-oh, why the serious tone?" asks Mikan.

"Why did you want to become friends with me?" asks Yami.

"Huh?" responds Mikan with a perplexed look.

"When I first came to Earth, I was hired to kill your brother. And while I didn't complete my task at first, I intended to at some point. Given the circumstances, you should've despised me, but you didn't. In fact, you willingly became my friend, and taught me how to live again. And it wasn't because you were trying to dissuade me from killing Rito Yuki or any other ulterior motive; you genuinely wanted to be my friend. Why is that?" asks Yami.

"Uh, wow. That is quite a question. Hmm," says Mikan while pressing her finger to her chin. "Honestly, I just wanted to be friends, because I thought you were cool. And besides, I knew you weren't actually ever gonna go through with killing Rito," she says.

"You did? But how?" asks Yami.

"Just a gut feeling, I guess. You might've acted all cold and violent, Yami, but deep beneath that hard exterior, I saw a lonely girl who just wanted to be loved. That's not to say I took pity on you, because I didn't. It's just…I know what it's like to feel lonely," says Mikan.

"You, lonely? But you have parents, friends, the princesses, your brother," says Yami.

"Yeah, I know, and I love them. But there are other kinds of lonely, and I recognized that same kind in you. I guess, in the end, I didn't want either of us feeling that way anymore," confesses Mikan.

"Kindred spirits," says Yami with a smile.

"You could say that," says Mikan.

"Thank you, Mikan," says Yami.

"Hmm? For what?" asks Mikan.

"Just thank you," says Yami.

"You're very welcome," responds Mikan. Now it's her staring at Yami. "You know, Yami, I don't think Lala would mind if she knew you loved Rito," she says.

Her words cause Yami to drop a plate, which shatters on the floor. "I'm so sorry," says Yami.

"No, no, it's fine, don't worry. I shouldn't have surprised you like that," says Mikan, grabbing a broom and sweeping up the shattered pieces.

The sound of the front door opening and closing echoes into the kitchen.

"Hey, Mikan, I heard a crash. Everything alright?" shouts Rito from the foyer.

"Oh, Rito, you're home. Yeah, everything's okay," says Mikan, dumping the pieces into the trash.

Rito enters the living room, notices Yami in the kitchen, and freezes on the spot. "Oh, Yami. Uh, hi, there," he says.

"Hello yourself, Rito Yuki," says Yami, turning away to hide her blush. "I take it training went well?" she asks.

"Well," starts Rito.

"Hey, Mikan," says a second voice, interrupting.

"We came too, if that's alright," says a third voice.

Mikan's face turns pale. "Don't tell me," she says.

She turns around and sees her two best friends from school, Sachie and Mami, in the living room with Rito.

"Surprise!" yell Sachie and Mami in cheerful unison.

AAAAAAHHHHHHHHHH!, screams Mikan in her head.

"Rito Yuki, weren't my sister and Nemesis supposed to escort you home after training?" asks Yami.

"Oh, they did. But then…" says Rito, turning to Sachie and Mami.

"Mami and I were out shopping when we noticed Rito and those two girls on the street. Once we did, we just had to tag along," says Sachie.

"Yeah, and soon as we got here, the other two flew off. Your brother's got the coolest friends, Mikan," says Mami.

"Yeah, he sure does," says Mikan, staring daggers at Rito, which makes him quiver. "By the way, this is Yami, another one of our cool friends," she says.

"Pleasure," greets Yami with a bow.

"Really?" asks Sachie as she and Mami hurry over to Yami.

"Are you one of those trans-weapons thingies too? That's amazing," says Mami.

"Oh, well, I…" stutters Yami, unsure of what to say.

While Sachie and Mami are distracted by Yami, Mikan scurries into the living room, and yanks Rito by the ear, making him squirm.

"Ow, Mikan," whines Rito.

"What's the big idea? Why are they here? Why were they with you?" asks Mikan.

"Ouch. It's like Sachie said, they just saw us and decided to come over. I didn't wanna be rude and say no. Plus, I figured you'd be happy," says Rito.

"Fine, then. But I have to know; did you do anything to them?" asks Mikan.

"Huh? Like what?" asks Rito.

Mikan tugs his ear even harder. "Don't play dumb with me, Rito. Did you fall on them or grope them at all?" she asks.

"What? Ow, ow. No, of course, I didn't," says Rito, freeing himself from Mikan's grasp. She stares at him, unsure if he's telling the truth. "Geez, what do you take me for? Nothing happened, I swear" he says, nursing his ear.

"Hmmm," says Mikan before releasing a heavy sigh. "Well, that's good to know. And it better stay that way, got it?" she says, threateningly.

"Got it," says Rito, comically terrified.

Just then, they realize Sachie and Mami are right next to them, watching; Yami resumes cooking in the kitchen.

"Adorable. So this is how you two act at home," says Sachie.

"You guys must be pretty close," says Mami.

"Uh," says Rito.

"W-What? No way! We're not close at all," huffs Mikan.

"Come on, Mikan. Rito's all you ever talk about at school," says Sachie.

"Sachie," worries Mikan.

"Now I understand why you reject every boy who asks you out. It's 'cause you want someone who's like your brother. How sweet," says Mami.

"S-Stop it, Mami!" says Mikan, flushing furiously.

Even Rito slightly blushes, learning the extent of his sister's affections. But then he notices all this attention is making Mikan uncomfortable, so he clears his throat and changes the subject. "Hey, Sachie, Mami, can I get you any drinks?" he asks.

"Oh, yes, please," replies Sachie.

"I'd love iced tea," replies Mami.

"Coming up," says Rito as he heads for the kitchen, leaving Mikan to whisper-scold her friends for embarrassing her.

As Rito pulls four bottled drinks out of the fridge, Yami approaches him with a sample dish of her soup.

"Here, Rito Yuki," says Yami, offering him the sample. Rito looks at it with confusion, but then he notices the apron she's wearing, the ladle she's holding in her free hand, and the bot brewing over the stove. "I made it myself. Please try it," she says.

"Sure," says Rito, accepting the small dish. He lifts it to his lips, and lets the warm broth slide into his mouth while Yami quakes in anticipation. "Wow, Yami, this is delicious," he says.

Yami gasps and blushes. "Th-thank you. If you want, you should dip some taiyaki into it," she says.

"Eh? Well, maybe later, hehe. Anyway, thanks again," he says, offering Yami a bottled drink. She's surprised at first, but accepts the beverage with a grateful nod.

As the day goes on, Mikan continues prepping dinner in the kitchen.

In the living room, Rito plays a board game with Yami, Sachie and Mami while Celine watches in curiosity. Sachie and Mami hound Rito with questions about his life, and he answers them with cheerfulness and grace.

When Lala, Momo and Nana return from shopping errands, the room gets extra lively. Momo joins the board game while Lala and Nana enjoy the newest TV episode of "Magical Kyouko."

Mikan can't help but glance at Rito every now and then, worried that sooner or later, his clumsy nature will kick in. But to her surprise and relief, it doesn't; not once does he fall on or grope any of the girls, including Sachie and Mami.

Later, the friends enjoy dinner together. Lala and Momo trade all kinds of stories about Rito with Sachie and Mami. While they seem fascinated, Rito feels a little embarrassed from all the praise. Nana and Yami remain silent; as much as they want to mention Rito's perverted antics, they don't wish to be rude to their guests. Besides, like Mikan, they notice Rito hasn't done anything to any of them all day, so they give him a chance. Rito asks Sachie and Mami about their own lives, and they bombard him with answers. They discuss their favorite foods, hobbies, teachers and times spent with Mikan. Rito enjoys listening to all of it, making them both happy and the others impressed.

When night falls, Rito and Mikan stand out at the front gate to see off Yami, Sachie and Mami.

Yami unfurls her wings, about to launch. "Thanks again for today, Mikan," says Yami, bowing to Mikan.

"No sweat. Please, swing by tomorrow morning, and I'll teach you how to make my favorite breakfast," insists Mikan.

"I'd love that," says Yami. Then she glances at Rito, but doesn't say anything. Rito catches her subtle look, and reacts. "Well, then, goodnight," she says, taking to the skies and flying off.

"Wow, that's so cool," says Sachie.

"Wish I could fly too," says Mami.

"Sachie, Mami, thanks for coming over today," says Rito.

"And thank YOU for having us, Rito," says Sachie.

"Can we come over again sometime?" asks Mami.

"Of course, I don't mind," says Rito, delighting both girls.

Mikan tugs at Rito's sleeve. "Hey, Rito, would you mind helping Momo with the dishes?" she asks.

"Huh? But she said she could handle it," says Rito, innocently. Mikan shoots him a stern look, and he freaks out. "I mean, sure! I'd be happy to help her," he says.

"Good," says Mikan.

"Sachie, Mami, have a good night," says Rito as he enters the house.

"Night, Rito," say Sachie and Mami in unison.

Once the three of them are alone, Mikan gives her friends an apologetic look. "Listen, you guys," she starts, but then Sachie and Mami wrap Mikan in a tight hug, surprising her.

"Oh, Mikan, I'm so jealous of you," squeals Sachie.

"What? Jealous?" asks Mikan.

"No kidding. You're so lucky to have such a gentle and caring big brother. I wish Rito was my big brother too," pouts Mami.

"Uh, yeah, he's...he's pretty cool," says Mikan as they break off the hug. I guess he really didn't do anything to them on the way home after all, she thinks. Phew, looks like I had nothing to worry about.

"But you know, Mami, since he's not your brother or mine, that means…" says Sachie, but she starts blushing before she can finish the words.

"Oh. Yeah, you're right, Sachie," says Mami, blushing just as much.

Mikan sees their faces, and her brain overloads. WHAAAAT?!, she screams in her head. Don't tell me THEY'RE falling for him too. That's even worse than him groping them! Ugh, Rito, you playboy!

Back inside the house, Rito assists Momo with finishing the dishes.

"I know I said I got this, but I'm glad you offered to help, Rito," says Momo.

"No problem," replies Rito.

As he dries off a small dish, he realizes it's the same one Yami gave him to taste her soup. Then he thinks about that subtle glance Yami gave him before she left. And that's when he remembers her confession. You are the target of my love.

Rito's mind starts to wander. Yami. It's not that I don't believe her. It's just…she said she didn't want to come between me and Lala. Plus, confessing her love was more for herself than it was for me. Still though, she WAS in my dream. But...do I love her back? I mean, I do have feelings for her. But is it really love? Man, this harem stuff ain't easy.

"Rito?" asks Momo, snapping him out of his funk.

"Huh? Sorry, what'd you say?" asks Rito.

"You've been drying that same dish for two whole minutes. Got something on your mind?" she asks.

"Oh, uh, it's nothing," he says as he sets aside the dish, and grabs a cup to dry.

"Mmm-hmm. You're thinking about Yami, aren't you?" she teases.

"Huh? Wh-What makes you say that?" he asks, blushing.

"Hey, I know. Why don't you ask her to help train you?" she suggests.

"Her train me?" he asks.

"Think about it. You've gotten a gajillion times stronger thanks to Mea and Nemesis. But you get Yami on board, Stem'll be a teensy-tiny ant under your king-size boot," she says.

"Hmm. Well, analogies aside, you do have a point," he says.

"Of course, I do. Plus, this would be the goldenest of opportunities for you to get closer to Yami. Come on, you know you want to," she teases.

"Uh, I'm not sure goldenest is an actual word," he says.

"Rito, please," she says, getting serious and taking his hand.

"Momo?" he asks.

"Stem is still after your life. The more you're around Yami, the safer you'll be, and the easier I can rest. Just think about asking her. Please. For me," she says.

Rito stares at her for a moment, and then exhales and smiles. "Okay, you win," he says.

"Hmm-hmm. Don't I always?" she says, smiling.

The next morning. Yami's spaceship floats through the skies over the quaint town.

Inside, Yami sleeps peacefully in her bed, surrounded by a clutter of books. She opens her eyes, sits up, stretches her arms and yawns.

"Good morning, Yami," speaks Lunatique, the artificial intelligence which operates the ship.

"Good morning, Lunatique," says Yami, getting dressed.

"And happy birthday," he adds.

"Birthday?" she says, checking her calendar on the wall. "So it is."

Her memory flashes back to the last time she did anything on her birthday.

It was back when she was little and Tearju was still in her life. Tearju would always bring her cake and presents. They'd laugh, dance and celebrate together. But when Tearju disappeared, the parties disappeared with her. Afterwards, Yami was turned into a weapon, and she never celebrated her birthday again.

"Any big plans for today?" inquires Lunatique.

"It's just a day, Lunatique. Nothing exciting will occur," says Yami.

"On the contrary, I'm sure many exciting things would occur if your friends knew," he suggests.

"I don't want to trouble them with throwing a party for my sake. Besides, after all the things I've done…" she says, staring at her hands, remembering how much blood she's spilled with them.

"Yami?" asks Lunatique.

"It's nothing," responds Yami, clenching her fists. "Anything to report?"

"There haven't been any sightings of Stem since you last asked me, which was yesterday," he says.

"I see," she says. Then she notices the time. "Oh, no."

"Yami?" he asks.

"I'm supposed to head over to Mikan's house. She's teaching me to cook breakfast, and I don't want to disrespect her with a late arrival. Lunatique, remain on standby in the air, and keep your eyes peeled for Stem. Notify me the second you pick up anything," she orders.

"Roget that," he complies.

000000

Later, Yami arrives at Rito's house. She rings the doorbell, and Rito answers the door; Yami appears stunned, expecting Mikan to answer.

"Oh, hi, Yami," says Rito.

"G-Good morning, Rito Yuki," says Yami.

What's wrong with me? she thinks. It's just Rito Yuki. I've already confessed to him, and made peace with knowing he and I will never be together. So why am I still getting all worked up?

"You're here for Mikan's cooking lesson, right?" he asks.

"Yes, that's right. But what about you? I thought you'd be out training with Mea and Nemesis," she says.

"Yeah...Nemesis said I need to rest every now and then so that my body can recuperate. Otherwise, the training's pointless," he says, rubbing his neck.

"Yes, I suppose that's true," she says.

"Speaking of training, I was wondering if…" he starts, but can't bring himself to finish.

"Yes?" she asks.

"Oh, never mind. Come on in," he says, opening the door for her.

"Thank you," she says.

Once she enters the house, she notices all the lights are off.

"Rito Yuki, was there a power surge earlier?" she asks.

"Nope," he says.

Yami looks at him in confusion. "Then why-"

The lights suddenly turn on, followed by the popping sounds of a dozen confetti cannons.

"SURPRISE! Happy birthday, Yami!" yells everyone; Rito, Mikan, Tearju, Mea, Mikado, Oshizu, Celine, Lala, Momo, Nana, Haruna, Run, Ren, Yui, Risa, Mio, Saruyama, Rin, Aya, Saki and Zastin.

The living room's been decorated; there's a cake with lots of candles and taiyaki on one table, and a pile of presents stacked on another. Mikan runs up to Yami, and hugs her tightly.

"Wh-What is this?" asks Yami.

"It's a birthday party, Yami, for you," says Mikan.

"Birthday? But how did you know?" asks Yami.

"Actually, it was my idea," says Rito.

"YOUR idea?" asks Yami.

"Mine as well," says Tearju.

"Tear?" asks Yami.

"Last week, Rito and I were just casually chatting at school, and when the topic of birthdays came up, I accidentally let it slip when yours was," explains Tearju.

"And I, uh, accidentally let it slip when I was talking to Mikan," says Rito.

"That's right! And soon as I found out, I wanted to throw you the biggest, bestest, birthday party ever. I'm sorry I didn't tell you, but I was afraid you'd say you didn't want a party at all. Plus, I wanted to make it a surprise," says Mikan.

"Yes, Yami. We asked everyone here to come and pitch in, and they were more than happy to do so," says Lala.

"Everyone," says Yami.

"We didn't mean to go behind your back, Yami. I apologize, but I have such fond memories of celebrating your birthday, and I hoped we could create more of them," says Tearju.

"I'm sorry too, Yami. But if it's alright, we'd all love to celebrate today with you. What do you say?" asks Rito.

"I…I don't know what to say," says Yami.

It's true. The last time she had a party was when Tearju was still in her life. After that, the only life she knew was war and blood. But now, here on Earth, in the town of Sainan, she has lots of loving friends and family celebrating her birthday.

It's too much for her.

"Yami?" asks Mikan.

"I-I need a moment," says Yami as she runs back outside, leaving everyone confused.

"Wait!" shouts Mikan.

Yami runs out onto the street, and takes several deep breaths. Mikan, Mea and Tearju all come running after her. Everyone else gathers around the front door to watch.

"Yami," says Mikan.

"Big Sister," says Mea.

"What's wrong?" asks Tearju.

Yami turns around to face them. And for the first time in her life, she cries. Not sorrowful tears, but joyful tears. She quickly wipes them away, but they don't stop. "It's nothing," she says, not wanting anyone to see her cry.

Mikan, Mea and Tearju stare at her with compassion. And then, one by one, they all embrace her in a warm, group hug.

"I love you, Yami," says Mikan.

"I also love you, Big Sis," says Mea.

"I love you more than anyone, Yami," says Tearju.

"I love you too, all of you. But do I…do I deserve this? After all I've done, do I deserve to be loved? To be happy? To celebrate my birth?" weeps Yami.

"I don't care if you deserve it or not. We all love you so much, and we're doing this BECAUSE we love you. This day is yours, Yami, and it'll be yours again next year," says Mikan.

"Yeah. And the year after that, and the year after that," says Mea.

"And the year after that, and every year for the rest of your life. We'll be there for them all," says Tearju.

Yami sniffles, and finally gets herself to stop crying. "Thank you, everyone," she says, hugging them back.

Back by the front door, everyone watches the scene unfold with elated faces.

"Yahoo! Yami!" yells a voice.

Everyone looks down the street, and sees the perverted Mr. Principal sprinting towards Yami, leaving a large trail of dust in his wake.

"Don't cry, my sweet Yami! I'll cheer you up in no time with a big hug and kiss!" he shrieks. As he charges towards Yami, she and Mea become angry whereas Mikan and Tearju freak out.

"Oh, no. Not him again," says Mikan.

"Mr. Principal, please control yourself," yells Tearju.

"How dare he ruin this wonderful moment. I'll make him pay," says Mea, arming herself with her laser cannon.

But Yami holds up her hand. "Allow me, Mea," she says, transforming her hair into a giant fist. Then she waits for Mr. Principal to get closer.

"Come to me, Yami!" says Mr. Principal, leaping towards Yami.

But before she can pummel him with her fist of hair, Rito comes jumping out of nowhere, and kicks Mr. Principal right in the face. Mr. Principal goes flying and slamming into the stone wall. Then he slumps to the ground, bruised and unconscious; a pathetic blob of flesh on the pavement. Everyone stares awestruck at Rito.

"Gah! I didn't mean to kick him that hard. I thought I was holding back," worries Rito.

Back in the house, Momo and Nemesis trade whispers.

"THAT was holding back? What kind of training have you been giving him?" asks Momo.

"Don't look at me, that was all Rito. The power within him must've aligned with his desire to protect Yami, and blessed him with immense strength. You should be happy, Momo. With this, he'll be even stronger against Stem," says Nemesis, but Momo remains concerned.

Outside, Rito gets down on the ground, and bows to Yami. "I'm sorry, Yami. When I saw him coming, I got so angry, I couldn't help myself. I didn't mean to ruin your birthday. Forgive me," he begs.

Yami stares at him in bewilderment. She's not sure what perplexes her more; Rito hitting the principal, or the fact that he's apologizing to her for it. It's so peculiar that it makes Yami laugh; a genuine, heartfelt laugh. Mikan, Mea and Tearju start laughing with her. Now Rito becomes the bewildered one. Just then, Mr. Principal is back on his feet like nothing happened.

"Uh, Mr. Principal?" asks Rito, worried he's about to get expelled.

But instead, Mr. Principal focuses on Yami, and makes another leap for her. "Yami! Here's your birthday present!" he yells, puckering his lips.

Before he reaches Yami, she uppercuts him with her giant fist of hair, and he goes soaring and hollering into the sky, out of sight.

"Phew. Now that that's out of the way, shall we?" insists Yami.

"Yeah! Let's get this party started!" cheers Mikan.

"Way to go, Rito. That kick of yours was so cool," says Mea.

"Well, I, uh," stutters Rito.

"Rito Yuki, your assistance was unnecessary. But even so, I'm satisfied to learn all that training my sister's given you hasn't gone to waste," says Yami.

"Oh, sure, hehe," says Rito.

000000

Party time! Everyone applauds as Yami blows out the candles on her birthday cake.

When the party moves to the backyard, Run and Kyouko sing a duet using loud speakers built by Lala. Half the guests are dancing while the other half enjoy the food. The catering table is one-quarter party food, and three-quarters taiyaki, which Yami can't help but gorge on.

Zastin leans against the wooden fence, exhausted from all the dancing. Saki approaches him with an iced beverage, and offers it to him bashfully. He accepts it, equally bashful. Then he takes a sip, and smiles at her. She smiles back.

Over by the catering table, Aya helps herself to some cake, and notices the exchange between Saki and Zastin. She smiles, turns around, and accidentally bumps into Ren, causing the slice of cake she was holding to splatter all over his shirt. Aya panics, but Ren assures her he's okay. Ignoring him, Aya snags a handful of napkins, and quickly wipes the cake off his shirt. But she stops soon as she realizes how close she is to him. They both blush.

Later back inside the house, Yami unwraps her presents. Some of them are books; some of them are clothes; whatever they are, they each bring a smile to her face, and she expresses her gratitude to everyone.

The next gift she unwraps is a cookbook from Mikan. "Oh, Mikan," she gushes.

"And there's a few taiyaki recipes on page 46," says Mikan.

Yami hugs her best friend. "Thank you," she says.

Mikan hugs her back. "You're welcome. Here, open this one next," she says, handing her another present.

"Very well," says Yami.

But then, she notices the name on the present. She looks up at Rito with suspicious eyes, making him sweat.

Yami goes ahead and opens the gift, revealing a shiny necklace with her name on it. It's not a sparkling diamond or anything; just one of those cheaper necklaces found at most department stores.

But Yami stares at it with dazzling eyes. Though she's gone by names like Eve or Darkness, this is the first object she's owned with the name Yami on it. She's so moved, she's speechless.

"D-Do you like it?" asks Rito.

"First kicking the principal, and now this. You surprise me, Rito Yuki," responds Yami, still unable to thank him properly.

"Hehe, thanks," says Rito, smiling.

Off to the side, Tearju and Mikado trade smiles, happy to see Yami happy, and grateful to Rito for making her so.

"Thank you all for your wonderful gifts," says Yami to everyone in the room.

"Hold on, Yami. You've still got one left," says Mikan.

"Huh?" asks Yami.

On cue, Mea approaches her. "Give me your hand, Big Sister," she says.

Yami's not sure what's happening, but she complies and extends her hand. Mea places a silver key in her palm.

"A key?" asks Yami.

"A key to your new home. Bis Sis Yami, I'd love for you to come live with me," says Mea, surprising everyone.

"That's very kind of you, Mea. But I already have a home," says Yami.

"Yeah, about that," says Mea, turning to Lala.

"Hang on, everyone!" cheers Lala, raising her warp bracelet into the air.

"Oh, no," worries Rito.

000000

Over at Mea's apartment.

For a few seconds, all is quiet. And then, a bright light fills the living room, and everyone from the party materializes out of thin air, having been teleported by Lala's warp bracelet. Rito and Haruna freak out, check their bodies, and sigh with relief to see that they're still wearing their clothes. Not just them, but everyone else is still dressed.

"I was worried Lala's warp device would, ya know," whispers Haruna, blushing.

"You and me both," whispers Rito, also blushing.

"What're you guys talking about?" asks Lala, innocently.

"Oh, nothing," says Haruna, twiddling her fingers.

"Yeah, nothing," agrees Rito, whistling to dodge the question.

"Ta-da! Everyone, welcome to my humble abode," announces Mea.

Everyone marvels at the redesigned residence. What was once a modest apartment has been renovated into a penthouse straight out of science fiction. The architecture and furniture appear to be modern art mixed with Yami's spaceship.

"Yes, welcome, everyone," says an unseen voice.

"Lunatique?" asks Yami.

"Forgive me, Yami. I too was in on this," says Lunatique.

"What happened?" asks Yami.

"It's all thanks to Lala, Big Sis," says Mea.

"You did this, Princess?" asks Yami.

"Yep. You know how I created an extra floor in Rito's house to accommodate me and my sisters? Well, Mea came to me, asking if I could do the same for her place, so I used my inventions of special distortion combined with your ship, after getting Lunatique's permission, of course, and Viola! And don't worry, you can still fly around in your ship if you want to. Just look," says Lala, gesturing to the window. Everyone looks outside, and then they look up.

Outside, a portal appears on the exterior of the apartment complex. Yami's spaceship flies out of the portal.

Yami and the others watch the ship circle over the city. "Lunatique?" she asks, gesturing to the apartment.

"I'm still here, but I'm on the ship as well," says Lunatique.

"He can be in two places at once? Incredible," says Yui.

"That's good 'ol Deviluke technology for you," praises Zastin.

The ship flies back into the portal, which then disappears.

"So, Big Sis Yami, what do you think?" asks Mea.

Everyone looks at Yami, and she feels overwhelmed. "Well, I..." she says.

"You don't like it?" pouts Mea.

"No, of course I do. But Mea, are you sure? I wouldn't want to inconvenience you," says Yami.

"Nonsense. We're sisters; inconveniencing each other is our job. And besides, it's not just me. Right, Tearju?" implies Mea.

Now everyone turns to Tearju, and she panics. "Oh, well, I just thought, um, that it'd be nice to live with Yami again. Plus, I figured I could serve as a den mother of sorts to the three of you while Lunatique plays den father," she says.

"Tear. Wait, the three of us?" asks Yami.

Nemesis steps forward. "Fufu, I'll be living here as well," she says, surprising everyone even more.

"You, Nemesis?" asks Yami.

"Well, us weapons gotta stick together, don't we?" says Nemesis.

"She's right, Big Sis Yami. Please say yes. Pretty please?" begs Mea with sad eyes.

Yami stares at Nemesis with great suspicion; everyone else feels tense and awkward.

"I understand your hesitation, Yami. In that case, allow me the opportunity to say this," says Nemesis as she bows to Yami.

"Wait, what're you...?" asks Yami.

"I'm sorry. For everything," says Nemesis, catching Yami and everyone else off-guard. "When I came to Earth, my goal was to manipulate you into becoming Darkness. I wanted you to start another galactic war, because I believed combat was the only place weapons like us belonged. But I was wrong; so very wrong. After spending time in this town with the people in this room, I found myself a place for all of us to belong, without the fighting. A place to live together in peace and harmony. I thought such a dream for us was impossible. But these people opened my eyes and my heart to the possibilities. Yami, you have every right to hate me for what I did. If you don't want me here, I completely understand, and I'll leave Earth immediately," she finishes.

"Nemesis," says Rito.

...

"Raise your head, Nemesis," says Yami. Nemesis complies, and then Yami kneels down, and touches her shoulder. "I don't hate you. What you did helped me regain my memories of my former life. Not to mention, you're the one who took care of Mea when I couldn't. And you've been taking care of Rito Yuki ever since. As long as you don't cause anymore trouble for myself or anyone else here, you're welcome to stay," she says, which makes Nemesis smile.

"Big Sis Yami, does that mean…?" asks Mea.

"Yes, Mea. Tearju. I'd be happy to live you and Nemesis," says Yami.

"YAY!" cheers Mea, embracing Yami.

"Thank you, Yami," says Nemesis, hugging her as well.

"Yes, thank you," says Tearju, joining the group hug.

Everyone else applauds, happy for them; Mikan wipes the tears from her eyes, happiest of all.

"Nemesis, I do have two conditions," says Yami.

"Oh, really?" asks Nemesis.

"I won't stand for any freeloading. If you're gonna live here, you'll have to pitch in on your share of the chores," says Yami.

"Ah, seriously? Oh, fine then. What else?" pouts Nemesis, comically.

"We're no longer weapons. From now on, we're all sisters in this house," says Yami. Everyone gasps in surprise.

"Sisters? Fufu, yes. I like the sound of that," says Nemesis.

"Yay. Not just one, but now I've got two sisters. This is the best day ever," says Mea.

"I'm so glad, Yami. We can finally be a family again," says Tearju.

"Yes. A family," says Yami.

While the others enjoy the heartwarming scene, Rito stares at Yami, happy and proud of her.

After everyone gets teleported back to Rito's house, the party comes to an end, and they start heading home for the night.

In the living room, Mikan speaks with Yami and Tearju. "Please, Yami? I know you just got a new home, but I'd really love it if you spent the night here. Please, oh, please?" she begs to the point of adorable tears.

"Well," starts Yami, turning to Tearju for guidance; she smiles and nods. Yami turns back to Mikan, and smiles. "I'd love to," she says.

"Yay!" cheers Mikan as she hugs Yami. Just then, Haruna and Lala approach them.

"Uh, Mikan," starts Haruna.

"Hope you don't mind, I asked Haruna if she could sleep over too. We already got the okay from Rito, but..." implies Lala.

"What're you even asking for? You're always welcome to sleep over, Haruna," says Mikan.

"Oh, thank you, Mikan," says Haruna.

"Speaking of which, has anyone seen Rito?" asks Tearju.

"Oh, he's just taking care of a few things," says Lala.

Out on the street, Rito stands before six of his lovers and future brides; Mea, Nemesis, Run, Kyouko, Risa and Rin, all of whom are smiling and blushing.

Rito gulps, and checks to make sure no one else is around. "Th-Thank you all for coming," he says.

"Thank you for having us, Rito," says Run.

"Yeah, it was so much fun. I can't wait for the next birthday party," says Kyouko.

"You sure know how to show a girl a good time, darling," says Risa.

"D-Darling? Momioka, you shouldn't say stuff like that so casually in public," says Rin.

"Oh, lighten up, Kujou. We're all his lovers here. It's only natural we'd hound our man with affectionate nicknames," says Risa.

"O-Our man? Erm, this is all just so, erm," says Rin, her face reddening.

Rito butts in. "It's okay, Rin. I know what you mean. To be honest, I'm, uh, still getting used to this myself."

"Fufu, well, if you're gonna be a king with several brides, we're all gonna have to get used to it," says Nemesis.

"That's right. But don't worry, everyone, we'll make it work," says Mea.

"Yeah. Even if Rito takes a hundred brides, I'll still prove I'm the one who loves him most," challenges Run.

"A hundred what?" asks Rito.

"Oh, really?" teases Risa. Then she grabs Rito's face, and presses her lips against his, much to everyone's surprise.

"R-Risa," stutters Rito.

"Why, you," says Run, angry.

"Ya snooze, ya lose," jokes Risa.

"My turn," says Nemesis, yanking Rito's face into hers, and kissing him with force.

"Ah! Nemesis!" yells Run.

"Ooh, ooh, me next," says Mea, claiming Rito's lips for herself.

Rito backs away. "Now, hold on! Just wait a sec, you guys," he says before Run kisses him; she even sticks her tongue deep into his mouth.

"See?" says Run to the other girls, licking her wet lips.

"O-Okay, everyone, that's enough. We should leave before someone sees us," warns Kyouko.

"Seconded," says Rito.

Mea and Nemesis unfurl their wings, and hover in the air.

"Goodnight, Rito. We'll see you bright and early tomorrow morning for training," says Mea.

"Cool, see ya then," replies Rito.

"And don't fret. We maybe living with Yami, but we can still drop by every night to do more than kissing, fufu," says Nemesis.

"Gah," gasps Rito.

"Oh, and don't forget to tell Big Sis Yami how you feel," says Mea.

"Huh? Hey, wait," protests Rito, but the two sisters are already flying off.

Run pushes Kyouko closer to Rito. "Go on, Kyouko. Give Rito a goodnight smooch," she encourages.

"Huh? But I," says Kyouko, flustered.

"Oh, that's, uh, not necessary. Especially if she doesn't want to," says Rito.

"Oh, but she does. She totally does," says Run.

"Uh, well, I, erm," gulps Kyouko.

Rito feels smitten by her shy and cute demeanor. His body acts on his own, and he kisses her on the cheek.

She blushes feverishly, and rubs her cheek. "Oh, what the hell?" she says, quickly pecking Rito on the lips.

"Kyouko," says Rito, taken aback by her boldness.

"Later, darling," says Kyouko as she runs off.

"Bye, darling," says Run, following Kyouko.

"Goodnight, darling," says Risa, blowing Rito a kiss as she follows Run.

Rito and Rin are left alone. They shuffle their shoulders and feet, unsure of what to say.

"Rin," starts Rito.

"Yes?" asks Rin.

Rito opens his mouth to speak, but then Saki and Aya join them on the street.

"Rin, it's time we head out," says Saki.

"Yes, Miss Saki," responds Rin.

"Rito Yuki, you still have a long way to go before you can throw the kind of party that I can. But today was a good start. You should feel honored to have my praise," snarks Saki.

"Uh, thanks," says Rito.

"What Miss Saki means is that we all had a wonderful time, we appreciate the invite, and we'll see you at school," translates Aya.

"Yes, what she said. Now come along, girls," says Saki.

"Yes, Miss Saki," say Rin and Aya in unison.

As they walk off, Rin stops for a moment, confusing everyone. Then she turns around, runs back to Rito, and plants a big, hot kiss on his lips. Saki and Aya watch them with glee.

"Goodnight, d-darling," says Rin.

"Goodnight, um, beautiful," responds Rito.

Rin clutches her chest, feeling as though her heart just leapt out of it. She smiles at him, and then returns to Saki and Aya. Once they disappear, Rito sighs with joy, and starts heading inside.

This harem stuff ain't easy, he thinks.

"Yuki!" yells a voice, freezing Rito in his tracks.

Yui stomps out the front door, and gets in his face.

Oh, crap! thinks Rito. Please tell me she didn't see any of that.

"Relax. Don't get so scared every time I'm around," says Yui.

"S-Sorry, Kotegawa," says Rito, sighing in relief.

"Look, I just want you to know...mmm..." she says.

"Yeah?" he asks.

"D-Don't go doing any lewd things to Sairenji or Yami just because they're sleeping over," she warns.

"What? No, of course I won't," he says.

"You promise?" she says.

"Cross my heart," he responds.

Yui stares at him, knowing what he's really like, and knowing he'll keep his word. "Good, then I'll trust you," she says, slightly blushing.

"Th-Thanks," he says, blushing himself.

Nana approaches them. "Don't worry, Kotegawa. I'll make sure this beast doesn't do anything lewd to anyone," she says, cracking her knuckles.

Rito cowers from their intense stares. Yikes, how am I supposed to confess my love to the two of THEM? he thinks. I've a better chance of defeating Stem without my arms. Besides, there's someone else I need to confess to first.

Then he gazes at the upper window of his house.

000000

Later that night, Rito walks to his bedroom. He finds Yami leaning against the door, wearing the necklace he gave her, and pajamas lent by Mikan.

"Yami?" asks Rito.

"Rito Yuki," says Yami. Then she blushes, and mumbles her words.

"I'm sorry. What was that?" he asks.

"Th-th…than..." she mumbles. How is it I can tell him I love him, but I can't tell him this? she wonders. Then she clenches her fists, and looks him in the eye. "Rito Yuki!" she blurts out.

"Y-yes?" he asks, frightened.

"Thank you," she says with a smile.

"Eh?" he asks.

"I should've said that a long time ago. Ever since I came to Earth, my goal was to take your life. But you never once treated me with any hostility. Instead, you treated me with kindness and warmth. And when I transformed into Golden Darkness and nearly destroyed this town, you did everything you could to save me. Even though, your actions were perverted and disgusting," she says.

"Yeah, sorry about that again," he says.

"I wanted to thank you then, but my pride wouldn't let me. And then there was today. I haven't celebrated a birthday in so long, I'd forgotten when my birthday even was. But you made it happen. You also defended me from the principal, and gave me this lovely necklace. I just…I have so much to thank you for, Rito Yuki, and I'm concerned my words aren't enough," she says.

...

"Listen, Yami," he says.

"Yes?" she asks.

Rito gulps, and takes a moment to choose his words. "You don't owe me anything. But if you'd like, I was hoping you could help train me," he says.

Yami blinks at him twice.

Rito continues. "Don't get me wrong, Mea and Nemesis have been a big help. But I just thought-"

"I apologize, Rito Yuki, but no," she interrupts.

"Huh?" he asks.

"That wouldn't be fair to Princess Lala. Look, I told you my feelings, and to be honest, they've multiplied exponentially after everything you've done today. But if you and I were to spend more time around each other, it would complicate things between you and the princess," she says.

"But I don't think Lala would mind," he replies.

"But you should mind. I mean...it's not like you feel the same way about me. After all I've done, you have every right not to," she says, throwing Rito for a loop. She continues. "All I've ever wanted was to know what it's like to be loved, and today, I found my answer. As for the romantic kind of love, maybe there's a place for that in my heart. But for the good of all, it can't be with you. I'm sorry, Rito Yuki."

"Yami," he says.

"It's about time we get some rest. Goodnight," she says, walking away.

Before Rito can stop her, she's already inside Mikan's bedroom. "Ah, man. What am I supposed to do now?" he wonders, opening his door.

"Hi, Rito," say two girls at once.

"Eh? Haruna? Lala?" he screeches.

Unlike most nights when it's Momo, Mea or Nemesis, it's Lala and Haruna in his bed tonight, both wearing cute pajamas.

"We've been waiting for you," says Lala.

"What's going on?" asks Rito.

"Isn't it obvious, silly? Tonight, we're gonna sleep with you," answers Lala.

"Wait, what?" shrieks Rito.

"You don't want to?" pouts Lala.

"No, no, it's not that. It's just…Haruna, you too?" asks Rito.

"Well, I, uh, I just thought that…" says Haruna, too shy to speak.

"Rito, you still wanna marry us, don't you?" asks Lala.

"Yeah, of course I do," says Rito.

"Good. Then just think of this as training," says Lala.

"Training?" asks Rito.

"When we get married, we're gonna be spending every night in bed together. I don't want us feeling overwhelmed when that happens, so I figured we'd get some experience beforehand. Isn't that right, Haruna?" asks Lala.

"Yes. Though I'm still a little nervous," says Haruna.

"Come on, you can't back out now," says Lala.

"Lala, I get where you're coming from, and I appreciate it. But I don't think this is a good idea. What if I…you know…touch you in my sleep?" asks Rito.

Lala jumps off the mattress, grabs Rito by the arm, and pulls him into bed between her and Haruna; both Rito and Haruna are surprised by her speed. "It'll be fine, Rito. Please? I really wanna sleep with the man I love," says Lala.

"But," says Rito.

Haruna watches Lala snuggle closer to Rito, and feels a tinge of jealousy. "I-I also want to sleep with you, Rito," she says, snuggling up to Rito's other side.

"I, uh, I, erm," says Rito.

Like any innocent teenage boy, he's overwhelmed being sandwiched between two cute girls.

"It'll be fine, Rito. We trust you. Now, come here," says Lala, turning his face towards hers.

"L-Lala?" asks Rito.

Lala smiles, and kisses him full on the mouth, shocking both him and Haruna. "There. Now I can fall asleep," she says.

"Uh, mmm, gah," mumbles Rito, blushing.

"I-I can do that too," says Haruna, turning Rito's face to her.

"Yeah, go for it, Haruna," says Lala.

Haruna leans closer to Rito, but freezes the second their eyes meet. Lacking Lala's boldness, all she can do is tremble as her heart thumps wildly.

"Haruna," says Rito, gazing at her. Then he smiles, and kisses her himself. She's taken aback at first, but then melts into the kiss. When they break off, they smile at each other.

"Goodnight, Rito, Lala," says Haruna, closing her eyes.

"Goodnight, Haruna, Rito," says Lala, closing her eyes.

"Yeah. Goodnight," says Rito.

He looks at Haruna to the left, then at Lala to the right, and then up at the ceiling. I can't believe I'm sharing a bed with Haruna, he thinks. And with Lala too? Gotta admit, I could get used to this. Please, body. Don't grope either of them while I sleep.

000000

The next morning. The sun is shining, the birds are chirping, and the cicadas are buzzing.

In Mikan's room, Mikan and Yami sleep together in the bed. Celine, awake and out of her crib, climbs onto the bed. She playfully jumps up and down on the blanket, waking up Mikan; Yami remains asleep.

"Good morning, Celine. Didn't we talk about this?" yawns Mikan. Celine cheerfully babbles her response like she always does. "Oh, never mind. Wanna help me with breakfast?" she asks, getting out of bed. Again, Celine speaks gibberish with excitement. Mikan gets dressed, and notices Yami is still asleep. "I know I promised I'd teach her how to make breakfast, but I think I'll let her sleep in. After all, she did have a crazy night. Come on, Celine," she says, picking up Celine and leaving the room.

In the bed, Yami's eyes flutter open. She starts to wake up, and she's not the only one.

In Rito's room, Rito wakes up and becomes flustered to see Haruna sleeping next to him. Holy cow! he thinks. Haruna and I actually slept together. Calm down, Rito. First things first. He looks down at his hands; much to his relief, they aren't anywhere on Haruna's body; he didn't grope her. Phew. Okay. What about Lala? He turns his head, and finds the other side of his bed empty; Lala's nowhere in the room. Well, knowing her, she's probably showering. In any case, looks like I didn't grope her either. What a relief.

He carefully gets out of bed so as to not wake Haruna. Then he pulls the blanket over her, and brushes her hair out of her eyes; she looks like a sleeping princess. Haruna, I wish I could just stay in this moment with you forever. But…, he thinks as the memory of Yami turning him down last night flashes through his head. I won't give up on Yami. I can't.

000000

Later, Rito enters the hallway, closing his door behind him.

"I really hope I don't end up crashing into Lala's naked body again," he says. Just then, Mikan's bedroom door opens, and Yami emerges, locking eyes with Rito. "Oh, uh, hey there, Yami," he says.

Yami stares at him blankly. "Good morning, Rito Yuki," she replies.

They both stand in awkward silence for a moment. Rito opens his mouth to speak, but then-

"AAAAAAAHHHHHHHH!" screams Mikan from downstairs.

"Mikan?!" yells Rito, running for the stairs.

Instead of taking them one by one, he leaps and clears the whole flight, landing on the first floor. Yami flies down with lightning speed. They race into the living room.

"Mikan, what's wrong?" yells Rito.

He and Yami freeze when they see what's going on.

It's Stem, sitting on the single couch, cradling a teary-eyed Celine in his arms. "Miss me?" he asks, devilishly.

"Stem!" yells Yami, transforming her hair into blades, about to attack him and save Celine.

"Oh, Mikan, why don't you come join us?" says Stem.

Yami stops herself from attacking. Then she and Rito watch in horror as Mikan appears from the kitchen, wearing a collar around her neck; the same kind of bomb collar Stem shackled to the mugger.

"Oh, no," gasps Yami.

"Rito, Yami," says Mikan, terrified to the point of tears.

"Stem, what did you do? What is that thing?" demands Rito.

Instead of answering with his voice, Stem snaps his fingers, and the collar starts beeping, throwing Rito, Yami and Mikan into a panic, and causing Celine to cry. As the beeping grows faster, Mikan claws at the collar.

"Bad idea. You'll only trigger the bomb sooner," warns Stem.

Mikan stops clawing, and nearly collapses. "Bomb?" she asks.

"Let them go, Stem!" yells Rito.

"You are in no position to bargain, worm," says Stem, snapping his fingers again. The bomb collar stops beeping, deactivated for now. As Celine keeps crying, Stem bounces her in his arms like a doting father. "Shh, shh. Now, all of you…sit," he demands.

Rito, Yami and Mikan all remain standing.

Stem raises his hand, about to snap his fingers again. "I will not snap my fingers a fourth time," he threatens.

Rito and Yami trade looks, realizing one snap activates the bomb, and two turn it off. Grinding his teeth, Rito sits at the end of the large sofa, furthest from Stem; Yami retracts her hair-blades, and sits in the middle; Mikan sits at the end closest to Stem.

"That's better," says Stem.

"Hiding behind a child, and taking my best friend hostage. Such cowardly tactics," hisses Yami.

"That's rich coming from a cold-blooded weapon," retorts Stem.

"This doesn't concern Mikan or Celine. Let them go," says Rito.

"And surrender my only cards? Not a chance," says Stem.

"Why are you doing this?" asks Rito.

"An eye for an eye, Yuki," says Stem, gesturing to the red eye in his left socket, reminding Rito of the one he cut out the last time they met.

A voice from the stairs calls out. "Rito, you in here?"

"Oh, no," says Rito.

Just then, Lala walks into the living room wearing one towel around her body, and drying her hair with another. "I'm sorry, I think I used up all the…hot…water," she mutters, taking the scene into account. The second towel falls from her hands, and hits the floor; the first towel remains on her body.

"It's an honor to finally meet you, Princess Lala Deviluke," greets Stem.

Lala clocks Celine, trapped in Stem's arms and doing her best not to cry. Then she notices the bomb collar around Mikan's neck. Everything becomes clear, and she gives Stem an uncharacteristic death-glare. "You must be Stem," she says.

"At your service," says Stem.

"You tried to assassinate my father. You hurt my sisters and my friends. You tried to kill the man I love. And now, you break into our home, and put your filthy hands on Celine and Mikan," says Lala.

"Careful, Princess. Or you'll be putting YOUR hands on Mikan after I splatter her all over the walls," says Stem.

Tears cascade from Mikan's eyes. Rito squeezes his knees so tight, his kneecaps are about to break. Then he feels a slight tug on the ankle of his pajamas. He glances down and sees Peke at the base of the couch, hidden from Stem's sight.

"Rito, I can defuse the collar on Mikan, but you've gotta keep Stem distracted while I work," whispers Peke.

Rito looks over at Stem; to his relief, he's still focused on Lala. Then he looks at Mikan, and sees how scared she is. He looks back down at Peke, and winks, giving her the green light. Peke winks back, and tiptoes around the couch, inching closer to Mikan.

"Yuki," says Stem.

"What?" asks Rito, worried he might've caught onto Peke's plan.

"I've killed a lot of people in my life. There isn't a civilized planet or barren moon in the whole universe where I haven't drawn blood. And yet, despite all that, I've never had this much trouble killing one person. That is, one person other than King Gid. Tell me, what makes you so special?" asks Stem.

Rito glares at Stem for what seems like an eternity, clenching his fists all the while. Then he feels Yami touch his hand; she gestures at him to keep his cool. Rito takes a breath, remembers what Peke is doing, and relaxes himself. "I'm just a clumsy high schooler. There's nothing special about me at all," he says.

"And yet, you've managed to surround yourself with powerful allies, such as the legendary Golden Darkness," says Stem, eyeballing Yami; she responds with an icy glare. Stem continues, "Not to mention, out of all the schmucks in the universe, you're the one who successfully captured Princess Lala's heart. In fact, if you want to blame anyone for all this, blame her."

"Me?" asks Lala.

"It's your fault for choosing Yuki as your suitor, Princess. As the next successor to the throne, it was only natural he'd become my next victim," says Stem.

Rito stands up, and walks past Lala to the window; Stem looks away from Mikan, and follows Rito with his eyes.

"Why do you even want the throne, Stem? So you can rule the universe with an iron fist?" asks Rito.

"Actually, it's a much, rarer alloy," jokes Stem, raising his robotic arm while holding Celine with the other.

With Stem's eyes fixed on Rito, Peke seizes the opportunity; she jumps up from the floor, and onto the back of the sofa, behind Mikan's neck. Then she gets to work on the collar. Mikan, Yami and Lala notice Peke, realize what she's doing, and understand that Rito is deliberately distracting Stem.

But just as Stem is about to look towards Mikan, Lala quickly gets his attention. "Enough games, Stem! Surely, we can come to some sort of agreement," she suggests.

"You mean, one that doesn't involve anyone getting killed? Impossible," says Stem.

"Stem, please. I am begging you," says Rito, clocking Mikan's petrified face. Even though Peke's working on the collar, as an older brother, he can't help but worry.

"As am I," says Yami.

"Very well. Princess Lala, I might just be willing to spare the people in this room on one condition," says Stem.

"Yes! Please, I'll do anything," says Lala.

"Marry me," says Stem, shocking everyone.

"What?" asks Lala.

"It really is the simplest option. You become my bride, I become king, and no one has to die in the process. You have my word, but if that's not enough for you, here," says Stem, setting Celine down.

The second her feet touch the floor, she runs over to Lala, who picks her up and checks her for any injuries; fortunately, she's unharmed. Lala hugs her tightly. "Oh, Celine. I'm so glad you're safe," she says, and she's not the only one; Rito, Mikan and Yami are all relieved.

"And both Rito and Mikan can be safe as well, Princess. All you have to do is come with me," says Stem, extending his hand to Lala.

For a moment, it appears Lala is actually considering his offer. Yami and Mikan want to speak up, but doing so would expose Peke behind Mikan's neck, so they keep quiet.

"Hell no!" declares Rito, standing in front of Lala and Celine with his arms out. "I won't let you take her," he says.

"Rito," says Lala.

"It's your sister or your beloved, worm. You can't have both," says Stem, staring Rito down. The room becomes so tense and quiet, they could hear a pin drop.

"No," says Rito, refusing to back down.

Stem's mouth curves into a smug grin. "If you have any last words, Mikan, now's the time," he says. And then he snaps his fingers.

...

Nothing happens. No beeping. Not a sound.

Confused, Stem turns to Mikan, only to see Peke standing on the couch, holding the defused bomb collar. "Gotcha," she says.

At that moment, everything that follows happens in the blink of an eye.

Yami grabs Mikan, pulls her away, and thrusts her bladed hair at Stem. He dodges the attack, and fires his laser cannon. Yami shoves Mikan away just as the blast strikes her in the chest, sending her crashing through the front wall of the house, and out onto the street.

"Yami!" yells Mikan.

Stem aims at Mikan, has her dead-to-rights, and fires another blast. Like a deer in the headlights, Mikan can only watch as the blast zooms toward her. But then, a wave of dark matter erupts in front of Mikan, shielding her from the blast.

...

"Rito?" asks Lala.

All eyes turn to Rito.

A sinister aura emits from his body. A faint of red shines in his eyes. A pair of fangs protrude from his mouth. His brown hair changes pitch black. The dark matter energy stored within him begins to manifest out of control, transforming him into some kind of beast. He growls, and glares at Stem with evil intent.

Mikan, Lala and Celine stare at Rito with fright. Yami hastily limps back into the house; at the sight of Rito, she too appears just as unnerved.

On the other hand, Stem looks upon Rito with intrigue and says, "Not bad. Not bad, Rito Yuki."

Rito opens his mouth, and unleashes a monstrous roar. The girls cover their ears, the windows shatter, and the walls crack. Rito propels off the floor, and tackles Stem with such immense force, they break through the back wall of the house, and slide into the backyard.

Then Rito mercilessly pummels Stem's face with his bare hands; Stem doesn't even try to defend himself. With each blow Rito lands, Stem laughs. No matter how much blood splashes Rito's face, he doesn't let up, and Stem doesn't stop laughing.

Inside the house, Yami, Mikan, Celine and Lala (wearing clothes/Peke) run to the destroyed back wall, and watch as Rito furiously beats Stem to death. Haruna, Nana and Momo rush downstairs to join them.

"Big Sis!" yells Nana.

"What's going on?" asks Momo.

They all gasp at the sight of the sinister Rito attacking Stem.

"Is that…Rito?" asks Haruna.

As Stem takes each hit on the ground, he lifts his leg and kicks Rito back across the lawn. Then he stands, and wipes the blood off his chin. Despite all of Rito's powerful punches, Stem's face still remains in one piece. Rito is back on his feet; his veiny muscles start to bulge, causing his shirt to rip.

"You're only the second person to ever give me such a beating, Yuki. I must say, this new side of you impresses me," goads Stem.

The girls watch with worried eyes as Rito transforms into something ugly. Then he releases another ear-splitting roar.

"What's happening to him?" worries Mikan.

"Whatever it is, if he doesn't stop, he'll never be Rito again," says Lala.

"Oh, no," says Haruna.

"We gotta do something," says Momo.

"Yeah, but what?" asks Nana.

On cue, Yami flies towards Rito, transforms her hair into a massive fist, and strikes him in the back of the head with all her strength. The blow sends shockwaves throughout the area, causing the other girls to fall and Stem to stagger.

Rito collapses onto the grass, out cold. His black hair turns brown, his fangs recede, the red is his eyes vanishes, and the dark aura surrounding his body disappears; he's back to normal.

"Oh, now, why'd you have to go and do that?" mocks Stem.

"Stem," barks Yami, transforming into her Golden Darkness mode. But just like the time she used it against Kuro, she can control its power. And now, she's pulled out all the stops, and is fighting to kill. She yells, "I celebrated my birth for the first time in an eternity yesterday. And you dare threaten the people I love the very next day? I won't forgive you!"

"One way or another, Golden Darkness...I am going to kill that boy," says Stem.

Yami roars, and her blades lunge at Stem. He shoots up into the air, narrowly evading her attacks. Yami flies after him. The two take their intense battle to the skies; Yami using all her Golden Darkness moves; Stem using his assortment of weapons.

Down below, the girls rush to the unconscious Rito.

"Rito," says Mikan.

"Is he…?" asks Haruna.

"No, he's alive," says Lala.

"Which is more than I can say for Yami," says Nana, unfurling her wings.

"Wait," says Momo, seizing Nana's arm before she can fly off.

"What're you doing? She needs us," says Nana.

"She's in her Golden Darkness form. If we interfere, we'll only get in her way. Or worse, we'll be killed," says Momo.

"So we're supposed to just sit here and watch this?" says Nana.

Up in the sky, storm clouds gather and lightning strikes as the fight becomes one-sided. Yami throws everything she has at Stem, but it's not enough. Even in her Golden Darkness form, he's still too strong for her.

Stem slashes her blades with his energy sword, flies right up to her, and blasts her point-blank with his laser cannon. She screams in pain, and crashes onto the top of an apartment complex.

"Yami!" screams Mikan.

On the roof of the building, Yami tries to stand, but fails; she's in too much pain to move. When she looks up, Stem is right above her, charging another energy blast. "It was an honor, Golden Darkness," he says as he's about to fire-

BANG!

A beam of dark matter hits Stem from behind. He growls in pain, and turns to see Nemesis hovering in the distance, readying another blast.

"Get away from our sister, jerk!" yells Nemesis.

Stem aims his cannon at her, only to be hit by another blast of energy from the right. He turns to see Mea wielding her own energy cannons.

"You mess with one of us, you mess with all of us," declares Mea.

As Stem takes a moment to recover, Nemesis and Mea quickly descend to the roof, and help Yami on her feet.

"You came," says Yami.

"Of course," says Nemesis.

"Yeah. Now, let's waste this jerk," says Mea.

Down below, the others watch with joy. "Mea, Nemesis," says Mikan.

"Go for it, girls!" cheers Nana.

Stem floats closer to the roof, and says to the three sisters, "Well, isn't this an ordained miracle? The three legendary weapons gathered together. If I kill you all, there'll be no one left to stop me from killing Rito Yuki."

All three girls fly into the air, and square off against Stem.

"Over my dead body," says Yami.

"As you wish," says Stem.

The three sisters prepare themselves; Stem does the same. They stare each other down for a few moments.

Then a bolt of lightning strikes in the background, spurring them into action.

The fight is chaotic. Yami, Mea and Nemesis attack Stem all at once. Though they lack the experience of fighting as a team, the three coordinate and synchronize their moves perfectly, putting Stem in a bind. Every time he lands an attack on one of them, the other two retaliate with double the damage. He's losing ground, and starts fighting more erratically.

Dammit, thinks Stem. No other choice. Gotta reroute all power into my cannon. With this, I'll blast them into oblivion. He flies back and hovers in the air, charging and practically overloading his cannon with every last iota of energy he's got.

Down below, the others watch Stem with concern.

"No, he wouldn't," says Momo in disbelief.

Up above, the three girls regroup.

"A shot like that'll turn the three of us into ash, and this town into a crater," says Nemesis.

"We don't have anything strong enough to stop it," says Mea.

"Not on our own. But together…" implies Yami, smiling at the others. They smile back, getting the idea.

Yami raises her arm, and produces an enormous blade of light, just like she did when she turned Golden Darkness and fought Lala. The blade is so large and bright, it basks the entire town in an angelic glow.

"Ha! You'll have to do better than that!" gloats Stem, preparing to fire.

Mea hugs Yami's right side, and shares her energy with her; Nemesis hugs Yami's left side, and does the same. The two girls channel their power into Yami's attack, merging their energy to the point where the giant blade shines a rainbow of colors.

"It's over, Stem," says Yami.

"Yes, it is," replies Stem.

He roars his lungs out, and fires his nuclear beam. The three girls roar back, and then Yami slices her rainbow blade downwards. The humongous blade connects with the nuclear beam, stalling it. Stem and the three girls are locked in a stalemate, each side fighting for higher ground. But then, Stem feels his power draining, and his beam shrinking; his one attack is no match for the trio's combined power.

"What? No!" yells Stem.

"Be gone!" yells Yami.

Then she swings her giant blade down even harder, slicing through the nuclear beam.

Stem can only scream as the enormous blade slams against his body like a freight train, and he goes flying off into the horizon, out of sight.

The fight is over.

The rainbow blade disappears, and the three girls suck in great gulps of air, exhausted beyond words. They'd celebrate, but they're so drained, they're struggling just to stay airborne. Yami returns to normal, having depleted her Golden Darkness power for the time being.

As the girls trade victorious smiles, a look of dread fills Yami's eyes. "Rito Yuki," she says.

With her last bit of strength, she flies back to Rito's backyard, followed by Mea and Nemesis.

000000

Everything's pitch black.

"Rito!" says a voice.

Who's there? thinks Rito.

"Rito, please wake up," says the same voice.

Is that...? he thinks.

Rito's eyes flutter open. As his vision clears, he's greeted to the sight of Mikan crying tears of joy. He asks, "Mikan? Why're you...?"

"Rito!" yells Mikan, throwing herself onto him, hugging him tightly and weeping softly.

He gets his bearings, and realizes he's lying on the large sofa, wearing his clothes (someone changed him out of his ripped sleepwear). Haruna, Celine, Momo, Nana, Yami, Mea and Nemesis surround him, all relieved to see he's okay.

"You're gonna be fine, Yuki," says another voice.

Rito turns to see Mikado on the couch next to him. "Dr. Ryouko?" he asks.

"After what happened, we called her to check up on you," says Momo.

"If you feel any dizziness, let me know. Other than that, nothing a little bedrest can't fix," says Mikado.

"Speaking of fixing, ta-da!" says Lala, entering the living room.

Rito looks around the house; it's all repaired. The damaged walls, the excessive debris, the backyard; everything's been taken care of. It's like the epic thrash with Stem never happened. "Wow," marvels Rito.

Lala hugs him from behind. "I'm so glad you're okay," she says.

"Thanks," he says.

Mikan dries her eyes, and says, "Yes, thank you, Lala. Everything looks good as new, and not a moment too soon," she says.

A boom of thunder, followed by a flash of lightning. Rito only just now notices the torrential downpour outside. He rubs his head, and says, "I…remember." He looks at his hands; they're clean, but the image of Stem's blood all over them flashes through his mind. A look of dread fills his face. He clutches his head in pain.

"Rito," worries Mikan.

"I'm okay. Just a headache," says Rito, though the others aren't convinced. He looks at Mikan and asks, "What about you?"

"I'm fine, thanks to Peke," says Mikan.

"Thank you, Peke," says Rito.

"All in a day's work," says Peke, still holding the bomb collar.

"Peke," says Lala, offering her hand.

"Oh, right. Here, Miss Lala," says Peke, giving her the collar.

"You sure you wanna examine that thing, Big Sis?" asks Nana.

"Don't worry, it's perfectly safe," says Lala.

"That's right. I made sure to diffuse it, and then some," says Peke.

"Even so..." says Momo.

"Trust me, guys. If I learn more about this device, maybe I can learn more about Stem, and how we can beat him," says Lala.

"You really think that jerk's still alive?" inquires Nemesis.

"Yeah. I mean, Neme, Big Sis Yami and I did blast him to kingdom come," says Mea.

"No. He's still alive. We might not see him for a while, but he'll be back. And when he comes, I'll make sure he stays dead," says Yami.

"Yami..." says Rito.

"Mikan, you and Celine were put in danger, because I let my guard down. I am so sorry. Can you ever forgive me?" asks Yami, bowing to them.

"Yami, you saved me. And Celine," says Mikan. Celine giggles in agreement. Mikan continues, "You also saved Rito from whatever was happening to him, and you totally kicked Stem's butt out there. You've got nothing to be sorry for. If anything, I should be thanking you. So thanks," says Mikan. Yami smiles, delighted to have such a great best friend.

Momo turns to Nemesis and says, "Alright, Nemesis. I think it's time you told all of us what you did to Rito."

Everyone looks to Nemesis, wondering the same. She folds her arms, and says, "Nothing I didn't warn you or him about. He asked for my power, and I shared it with him, despite knowing the risks."

"Risks? DON'T play games! Your wayward power ran amuck, and almost killed him," says Momo.

"Easy, Momo," says Nana.

"If I had to guess, I'd say it was due to Rito's feelings," says Nemesis.

"My feelings?" asks Rito.

"Yes, Rito. Your overwhelming desire to protect your little sister combined with your hatred for Stem must've triggered the power within you to destabilize and go rampant," explains Nemesis. Then she looks to Yami. "Honestly, it's not as different as..."

"As when I transformed into Golden Darkness for the first time," finishes Yami.

"Which, by the way, also your fault," says Momo to Nemesis.

"Yes, I'm aware. In any case, if Yami's is Golden Darkness, that would make Rito's form...Black Darkness," says Nemesis.

"Black Darkness," repeats Haruna, frightened by the ominous name.

"Actually, it also happened to me a long time ago," says Nemesis.

"It did, Neme?" asks Mea.

"On a distant planet, during one of my bloodiest battles. My rage triggered a chain reaction to my dark matter, and I ended up decimating an entire army of not-so-friendly aliens. However, in time, I learned to control the transformation, so that it would never happen again. And it never did. But this is different. Remember, Rito's still just a human, and humans were never meant to have this power," explains Nemesis.

"Well, then take it out of him," demands Momo.

"Impossible. I've already shared so much of my dark matter with him, it's become a part of his physiology. A part of Rito himself. Which means, even if I could remove the energy, doing so now would probably kill him," says Nemesis, shocking everyone.

"You're lying," says Momo.

"I'm afraid not, Momo," chimes in Mikado. Then she turns to Rito and says, "Rito, when I was treating you, I noticed some changes to your body. While you are still human, you're already showing signs of alien anatomy due to the new energy within you. In other words, your developing body is now no different from mine, Lala's, Yami's or any other humanoid alien. But there's no need to worry; you're still you, you're not gonna turn into something ugly, and the dark matter isn't gonna eat away at your body like some disease. So long as you keep it dormant, you'll be fine."

Rito sighs in relief. "Okay. Wait, dormant? What does that mean?"

"What it means, Rito…is that you can't fight anymore," answers Nemesis.

Rito bursts off the sofa. "What?"

"For once, I agree with Nemesis," says Momo.

"You too?" asks Rito.

Haruna steps forward. "Rito...I was scared. I was scared FOR you, and…I was scared OF you."

Rito staggers back; that's something he never wanted to hear from his best girl.

Lala steps forward. "I was scared too, Rito. I don't ever wanna see you like that again."

"You've always been a beast, but never to that degree. Don't ever use that power again, Rito, unless you'd like a few broken ribs for convincing," warns Nana.

"And don't worry about Stem, Rito. If he is still out there, my sisters and I can handle him. We kicked his butt once, we can do it again," says Mea.

"But, you guys," says Rito. Then he feels Mikan clinging to his arm. "Mikan?"

"Promise me, big brother. Promise you'll never fight or use that power again," says Mikan.

Rito takes in the room. Everyone has the same look in their eyes; they're all worried about him, and they'll be upset if he doesn't make the promise. He lowers his head, and clenches his fist. "Why?" he hisses.

"Rito?" asks Mikan.

"WHY CAN'T ANY OF YOU UNDERSTAND?" shouts Rito, freeing himself from Mikan, and running for the door.

"Rito, wait!" shouts Mikan.

But he doesn't; he's already out the door, and sprinting off into the rain.

Before Mikan can go running after him, Yami grabs her shoulder. "I'll go."

"Yami?" asks Mikan.

"Remember, I made my own promise to you. I'll protect him no matter what," says Yami, sprinting out the front door. Everyone else watches her go, waiting and hoping for the best.

000000

Thunder booms, lightning flashes, and the rain pours.

In the sky, Yami flies against the fierce storm, surveying the streets and houses below; no sign of Rito.

Such a child, running off like that, she thinks.

A strong wind picks up, and her birthday necklace is about to blow off her neck. She snatches it quickly, and keeps it from blowing away. As the wind calms, Yami stares at the necklace; her gift from Rito.

At that moment, all the memories flash before our eyes...

000000

When Yami first met Rito, she identified him as her target. He offered her taiyaki; it was her first taste of Earthling food, and would become her favorite.

When shopping for new clothes with everyone, he protected her from a group of delinquents.

When she was sick, he carried her on his back all the way from school to Mikado's clinic.

When she swapped bodies with Mikan, she learned how caring Rito is, and became jealous of Mikan for having such a kind brother.

When she was affected by Celine's love pollen, she enjoyed a date with Rito, feeding him taiyaki, changing into a dress for him, trying to kiss him, and wanting to know what love is even if she was just under the pollen's effect.

When Azenda attacked Rito and Yami, using Mikan as a brainwashed minion, Rito defiantly told her how important Yami's friendship with Mikan is.

When he told her that her relationship with Mea is similar to his with Mikan, and how they're both not just weapons, she blushed.

When one of Lala's crazy inventions malfunctioned again, Rito and Yami's hands were stuck together for a whole day. That night, as they shared a futon at Rito's house, she confided in him about her past with Tearju, something she hadn't told anyone, not even Mikan. After their hands unstuck, he said something dumb, and she knocked him out. But then, she hugged him as they fell asleep; it was her first good night of sleep in a long time.

The time he encouraged her to reconcile with Tearju.

The time he said he wanted her to be happy, despite being her target.

When she transformed into Golden Darkness, he reluctantly did perverted things to her. It was disgusting, but even so, he still risked his life to save hers, and return her to normal; deep down, she was grateful.

When Kuro attacked Rito, she transformed into Golden Darkness willingly, going that far to save him. He asked her why, and she confessed her love to him.

000000

Back in the present, Yami grips the necklace as she continues to fly through the storm.

I guess I'm a child too, she thinks, her cheeks reddening. Because I am deeply, hopelessly, in-huh?

Down in a playground below, Rito sits on one of the swings, motionless and soaked to the bone.

Yami descends, and lands a few feet in front of him. "Rito Yuki," she says.

He doesn't reply; doesn't even lift his head to look at her.

"Everyone's worried. You shouldn't have run off like that," she says.

He remains quiet.

"You're soaking wet. If you stay out here, you'll catch a cold," she says, getting annoyed.

Still, nothing.

Yami steps forward, grabs him by the collar, and says, "Are you listening?" Then she gasps when she sees his wet face; not from the rainwater, but from his tears.

He finally says, "Mikan and I used to play here all the time when we were kids. There were days when it rained like this. Days when it snowed. Days when she fell off the swings and got hurt. But I was always there. I always did my best to keep her safe."

Yami releases his collar, and speaks in a softer tone. "It wasn't your fault."

"Stem came after her because of me. She almost died because of me. All this talk about becoming a king, and I can't even protect my own little sister. I can't protect anyone. I can't…I can't do anything," he cries, burying his face in his hands. No matter how hard he tries, the tears won't stop.

Yami can't bear to see him like this, nor can she deny her passion any longer. No matter what she said in the past, no matter how much grief he caused her, the simple truth is that this boy, bearing his soul before her, is the one she treasures most. "Rito."

Rito stops crying, and gawks at Yami. Did she just…say my name? Without my last name? he thinks.

Yami takes a seat on the swing next to him. "You hate yourself for turning into Black Darkness. I know what that's like. Remember, I lost control of my own power, went on a rampage, and nearly killed everyone I knew. But when it was over, they all forgave me. And over time, I learned to forgive myself. If they could forgive me, they'll surely forgive you too. Knowing them, they already have," she says.

"Yami," he mutters.

Yami looks up at the sky, letting the rain splash her face. "When I first came to Earth, my goal was to kill you. Despite that, you never stopped being kind to me. And before I knew it…I fell in love with the very target I planned to kill," she says.

Rito listens to her in earnest. The rain becomes a gentle drizzle.

Yami slowly rocks herself back and forth on the swing. "I had every chance to take your life, but never did. Perhaps it was because of Mikan. Perhaps it was because I grew fond of this town. And if I killed you, I'd lose my reason to stay. After spending so much time here, I dreaded the day I'd have to leave Earth, and return to my old life as an assassin. So I figured that as long as you were still alive, I could put off leaving. But while it's true I never want to leave, my new reason to stay, my new reason to spare your life...is because I love you," she says.

Rito blinks twice.

Yami stops swinging, and stares at him with sparkling eyes and red cheeks. "I truly love you, Rito. And I want to be with you and Mikan forever," she confesses.

Rito gapes, loss for words.

Yami gulps. "And…there's something else I must confess."

000000

The previous night after Yami's birthday.

Yami and Lala, wearing pajamas, finish brushing their teeth in the bathroom.

"Princess, may I ask you something?" asks Yami.

"Sure," says Lala.

"You still plan to wed Rito Yuki, correct?" asks Yami.

"You bet! And he plans to wed me," replies Lala, elated.

"You have my deepest congratulations. But I should tell you, when I was in the library the other day, I saw him with Sairenji. And the two of them seemed...happy together. I'm probably reading too much into it, but I just thought you should know," says Yami.

"Hmm. Well, I'm sure Haruna wants to marry him too. Wouldn't you, Yami?" asks Lala.

Yami blushes and frantically waves her arms. "W-w-where did that come from, Princess? Of course not! I would never marry that lecherous man! And besides, ahem, there's no way he'd ever marry me," she says.

"What makes you say that?" asks Lala, tilting her head.

"Well, for one, I'm a weapon. And for another, I've threatened his life too many times," answers Yami.

"Yeah, but none of that matters to Rito. All that matters is how you both feel. And between you and me, I think he really loves you, Yami," says Lala.

Yami grows even more flustered. "Him love me?" she asks in disbelief.

"Think about it. You may have threatened him a bunch of times, but that never stopped him from being kind to you, did it?" inquires Lala.

"Well, no," replies Yami.

"So how could he not be in love with you?" considers Lala.

"But…that's…" says Yami; whether she admits it or not, Lala raises a good point.

"What about you, Yami? How do you feel about him?" asks Lala.

"It, uh, erm, it doesn't matter," responds Yami.

"Come on, tell me," eggs Lala.

...

Yami can't resist her innocent charm; she gulps, bows and says, "Oh, Princess, I beg for your forgiveness!"

"Hmm?" asks Lala.

"I haven't been honest with you, not for a long time. I've kept my feelings hidden deep down, hoping they would go away. But they never did. For that, and for keeping this from you, I am truly sorry. The truth is I...I...I...I am in love...with Rito Yuki," confesses Yami.

Lala sets her toothbrush down on the sink.

Yami closes her eyes, and shakes like a leaf as she continues. "I know he is your fiancée, and the last thing I want is to come between you two. I've already confessed to Rito Yuki, but I know it can never be. I will gladly bury my feelings and leave this planet so that you two can enjoy your-"

Lala grabs Yami's shoulders, stopping her. Yami trembles, worried about how angry Lala must be. "Yami, open your eyes," says Lala.

Yami does so, and to her surprise, Lala is smiling.

"It's okay," she says.

"Princess?" asks Yami.

"I'm saying it's okay for you to love him, Yami. Your feelings are precious; don't go burying them like they're nothing. And don't even think about leaving," says Lala.

"But I…" starts Yami before Lala takes her hands.

"No buts. You love him, and I love him, and he loves us both. If anything, our love should keep us together, not tear us apart. Of course, it's up to you. But I want you to stay, and I know Rito does too. You have my blessing, Yami. Consider it an extra birthday present, hmm-hmm," says Lala.

"Princess…thank you," says Yami, smiling.

"You're welcome," says Lala before yawning.

"It is quite late," says Yami, also yawning.

"Yeah, hmm-hmm. Guess it's time for bed. Goodnight, Yami," says Lala, walking away.

"Goodnight, Princess," replies Yami.

Lala walks down the hall, and opens Rito's door. "Hey, Haruna. Looks like Rito's not here yet," she says, closing the door behind her.

Yami remains in the bathroom, pondering her thoughts. She stares at herself in the mirror, searching for answers. Then she touches her necklace, and makes up her mind. "Okay." She walks to Rito's door, leans against it, and waits for Rito to show.

000000

Back to Rito and Yami on the swings in the rain.

Yami keeps looking at the sky. "I was so happy she gave me her approval. But…I still had to give my own to myself. I believed I'd live the rest of my life as a weapon. But ever since I came to this town, I made friends, adopted two sisters, reunited with Tearju, and even fell in love. And it's all thanks to you, Rito," she says. Then she rises from her swing, and joins Rito on his, sitting on his lap, facing him.

"Yami?" he asks, flustered.

She wraps her arms around his neck. "And it's not just me. Mea, Nemesis, we were all weapons drifting aimlessly. But now, we've become a family, something none of us ever had. All our lives, we've only ever known fighting. But you changed that, Rito. You saved all of us from a miserable future," she says.

And at that moment, for the second time in her life, she sheds tears of joy.

She cups Rito's face with her hands, and repeats her confession from long ago. "Rito…you are the target of my love. And...and I...understand if you don't feel the same-"

"You're mine too," he interrupts.

Yami gasps.

"You are the target of my love, Yami," he confesses.

Yami blushes adorably, and sheds even more tears of joy; Rito wipes them away.

"I…I still don't know…what's it like to be kissed," she says.

Rito smiles, brings her face closer to his, and their lips connect. Two young adults sharing a swing set, kissing in the rain.

When Yami breaks off, she touches her lips. "That might be…my new favorite birthday present, hmm-hmm," she giggles. They trade smiles, and kiss again.

000000

Back at Rito's house.

Everyone sits around the living room in silence, waiting for Rito and Yami to return. Mikan serves tea, doing her best to improve the mood.

The front door opens, and Yami leads Rito inside. "We're back," she says.

In seconds, everyone meets them in the foyer. Rito and Yami are so wet, they're forced to stay in the foyer to avoid soaking the floors.

"Dang, you two are drenched," says Nana.

"Which is why we got these for ya," says Momo, offering them towels.

"Thank you, Princess Momo," says Yami, accepting a towel.

"Yeah, thanks," says Rito, taking the other; he just holds it, and doesn't dry off.

"Uh, we also drew you a bath. Better warm yourselves up before you catch a cold," says Haruna.

"Thank you, Sairenji, everyone," says Yami.

"Why don't you go first, Yami? I'm sure Rito won't mind, right?" asks Mikan.

Suddenly, Rito rushes Mikan, and hugs her tightly. Everyone watches with surprise.

"R-Rito?" she asks.

"I'm sorry, Mikan. I'm so sorry," whimpers Rito as tears cascade down his face. "I'm so glad…you're okay."

Mikan is moved beyond words, and gently hugs Rito back. "I'm glad you're okay too, big brother," she says. The two siblings remain embraced while the others watch in awe.

Rito wipes his eyes, backs away, and bows to the group. "I'm sorry, everyone. I lost control of myself, went berserk and put you all in danger. Please forgive me," he pleads.

Celine runs up to Rito's legs, gesturing to be picked up. He does so, and she hugs him lovingly.

"You've got nothing to apologize for, Rito," says Lala.

"That's right, nobody blames you. This was all that Stem jerk's fault," says Haruna.

"Yeah, you were just trying to protect your sister. I know what that's like," says Mea.

"Yeah, me too," says Nana.

"If anyone should be apologizing, Rito, it's me. I should've warned you about the dangers of Black Darkness beforehand. I'm so sorry," says Nemesis.

"It's okay, Nemesis," replies Rito.

"Well, I'm just relieved it didn't get any worse," says Mikado.

"Same here. And as long as you don't use that power again, everything's good," says Momo.

"Yeah, about that," says Rito. Everyone's faces turn pale.

"Rito?" asks Momo in a serious tone.

"I'm sorry again, you guys. But next time...I'm gonna fight Stem," says Rito. While the others gasp in disbelief, Yami and Nemesis become intrigued.

"You can't be serious," protests Momo.

"Listen, I will be king of Deviluke. When that day comes, there'll be others seeking my life for the throne. This won't end with Stem; he's merely the first in a long line of would-be assassins. So I have to get stronger, not just for my sake, but for all of yours as well. Please, guys, you have to trust me," says Rito.

...

"Rito, we trust you with our lives. But what if you lose control and transform again?" worries Momo.

Yami interjects. "That won't happen, because I'm going to train him."

Everyone, especially Rito, looks to her in astonishment.

"Three legendary weapons as instructors makes for better odds than two. Plus, as someone else who's experienced losing control of their power, who better to train him?" inquires Yami.

Nemesis chimes in. "Fufu, she has a point. Not to mention, there's no safer place for Rito than with the three of us. Wouldn't you agree, Mea?"

"Hmm. Well, I suppose you're right. Plus, training Rito is a blast. I'd hate to stop now, especially since Big Sis Yami wants to join," says Mea.

"Mea," scolds Nana.

"You guys, come on," says Momo.

"Momo," says Nemesis, getting down on her hands and knees, and bowing with absolute submission. "I know my word means nothing to you, but it's all I can give. I will protect Rito, from Stem and from himself. I will not let Black Darkness take him. I will make him strong without relying on anymore of my power. From now on, we'll stick solely to the Neme-watches. He's learned so much, and has come so far. I beseech you; please don't impede his growth now," she begs.

Though her words were for Momo, it seems the others are pondering them as well; their expressions range between worry and uncertainty. As Nemesis rises from the floor, Mikan approaches Rito. He holds Celine with one arm, and Mikan takes the other.

"If I allow you to do this, Rito…you have to promise me you'll be careful," says Mikan.

"I promise," says Rito.

"No, that's not good enough! Swear to me you won't die. Swear it on our family's name," says Mikan.

"Fine, I swear. I solemnly swear on the good Yuki name, I won't die," says Rito, raising his hand.

"You better not," says Mikan, playfully flicking his nose. Celine laughs, and also gives his nose a good flick.

Rito faces the others. "That goes for all of you too. I promise I won't lose myself to that power again. Stem's gone too far, and I won't let him hurt any of you anymore. I'm going to finish this with him. And then, I'm going to throw the biggest party ever, and celebrate with you all," he promises.

"Oh, Rito," says Haruna.

"That's good enough for me," says Lala, giving him a thumbs-up.

"Fine, then. But listen, you beast; the second things go wrong, you pull the plug on this nonsense, and leave Stem to Mea and her sisters. Got it?" threatens Nana.

"I concur," says Mikado.

"Okay, yes, yes. If things go wrong, I swear I'll quit training and fighting altogether," says Rito.

Momo releases an exhausted sigh. "I just can't win against you. Once your mind's made up, there's no stopping you," she says to Rito. Then she faces Nemesis with a stern look. "Nemesis, you're right; your word means nothing to me. But your heart…I know you carry yours for him too, and I'll settle for that much. Please take good care of Rito," she says, offering her hand.

Nemesis stares at her in disbelief. Then she smiles, and shakes Momo's hand. "Thank you, Momo."

Rito smiles at them, glad they finally made peace.

Suddenly, Mikan seizes Rito by the collar, and looks him dead in the eye. "By the way, big brother, don't you have something else to apologize for?" she says.

Rito only just now notices her wet clothes, which was his fault when he hugged her earlier. "Oh, crap. Sorry, Mikan-achoo!"

"Uh-oh," says Lala.

"Rito, you need to get in the bath before you get sick," says Haruna.

"R-Right. Mikan, how 'bout you and Yami go first?" suggests Rito.

"Sure. And we'll be quick so you can go next," says Mikan.

Yami steps forward. "No, that won't do. Mikan, I don't want you catching a cold either. And Rito, you won't be able to train if you're sick. So…" she says, blushing madly. But then she steels herself, and declares, "The three of us will have to bathe together!"

"WHAATTTT?" shrieks everyone.

"Oh, my. How bold of you, Yami," jokes Mikado.

The next day in the park.

Rito and Yami leave the local bookstore, each carrying a book. Afterwards, they each purchase a bag of taiyaki from Yami's favorite vendor, and then sit on a bench together.

"Wow. This place sure brings back memories," says Rito.

"Instead of reminiscing about the past, Rito, you should focus on reading. We can't have a brainless idiot as our next king," says Yami.

"Well, I, uh, I got this book on world politics, didn't I? That's something," he says.

"Hmph," she says, turning her head. Then she opens her book on alien wildlife, chews taiyaki at a rapid pace, and ignores Rito.

"Oh, come on. Don't tell me you're still mad," he says.

The events of the previous day flash through their eyes. Rito and Mikan agreed to bathe with Yami together; it was the best way to keep all of them from getting sick. Plus, they all felt comfortable doing it; Mikan had already bathed with both Yami and Rito multiple times. And there was the one time when Rito and Yami were forced to bathe together, because their hands were stuck together. But back then, Rito kept a towel around his waist, and another one around his eyes as a blindfold. And this time, when the three of them shared the bath, he did so again. While he was comfortable being naked around Mikan since they're siblings, he didn't feel that way with Yami, so he wore the towels again. Although Yami hates perverted things, she felt stung that Rito was embarrassed in her presence, but not Mikan's.

"I said that I love you. You shouldn't have a problem being naked around me," scolds Yami.

"But it's way too soon for that sort of stuff. Besides, since when do YOU not have a problem with ME being naked? I thought you hated perverted things," he says.

"Yes, I do. But if you're serious about this harem plan of yours, you're gonna have to start feeling comfortable being naked around other girls besides Mikan," she says.

"Yeah, I know. Um, by the way, is that book any good?" he asks, reading her pages on alien wildlife.

"It's incredible. To think, aliens would share their published material with earthlings, and they would in turn distribute the material for all. Art has a wonderful way of bringing species together," she says.

"Yeah, it does," he says.

Suddenly, Yami slams the book close, and stares at Rito, making him uneasy. "Don't think you can change the subject through flattery. The harem plan…are you serious about it?" she asks.

"Yes," he says without hesitation or elaboration.

Yami takes a moment to think it over. "You love Haruna Sairenji, but you didn't want to have to choose her over Princess Lala. So you decided to reciprocate the princess' feelings, and figured you might as well accept the feelings of the other girls who love you too," she says.

"Well, I wouldn't put it like that," he says.

"And you promised them that if they still loved you by the time you became the Devilukean king, you'd marry them. An ideal goal for a pervert," she says.

"Yami," he pleads.

"Hmm-hmm, just kidding. If anyone has that much love for so many women, Rito, it's you," she says.

"So, you're not mad?" he asks.

"What're you talking about? I'm livid. You accepted Nemesis and Mea into your harem before me, even though I was the first of us three to confess to you," she says.

"That's...I"m sorry," he says.

"Still kidding," she jokes.

Rito sighs with fatigue; he honestly can't tell when she's messing with him or not.

Yami rises, and offers her hand. "We should head to the river now. My sisters are waiting," she says.

"Right," he agrees, taking her hand as the two start walking.

"I hope you're ready, Rito Yuki. I'm a much stricter teacher than Mea or Nemesis," she says.

"I don't doubt it, hehe," he says.

The two lovers trade smiles as they walk through the park, holding hands and taiyaki.

Author's Note: As you've noticed, the chapters are getting longer. That's because I'm not just writing about Rito charming one girl after another, but I'm also trying to tie up as many loose ends from the manga as possible. Additionally, like Rin, Yami is one of the girls who love-hates Rito; getting her to love-love him, even though she already confessed, took some work. Not to mention, I wanted to give her the happy ending she deserves. Plus, the berserk mode (when the hero gets crazy strong after their loved one gets hurt) is a popular trope in anime, so I wanted to include my own with Rito. And how 'bout that clash between Stem and the three weapons? Next up will be another girl who love-hates Rito. How will he win her heart? 'Til next time.
