Chapter 12 - Nana

One morning in Rito's house, Nana slugs her way up the stairs in her pajamas.

"Ugh, I can't believe I have to wake up that idiot again," she groans.

As she approaches Rito's door, she reaches for the doorknob, but stops. "Oh, almost forgot," she says. Then she cracks her knuckles, ready to pummel him the second she sees him in bed with either of her sisters. "Okay."

When she opens the door, all she sees is Rito snoring in bed; no Momo, no Lala, no anyone; just him. Nana tilts her head in confusion. Then she approaches the bed, and stares at the blanket; no sign of anyone else under there. Nana clocks Rito, confirms he's still asleep, and lifts up the covers.

Hmmm, that's odd, she thinks, somewhat disappointed she doesn't get to beat Rito up.

...

Nana realizes she's still holding up the blanket, and that Rito is still asleep.

For whatever reason, the sight of his sleeping face gets her heart pounding. She gulps, and for a second, it appears she's about to crawl into bed with him.

"Hmmm," yawns Rito, startling Nana.

What the heck am I thinking? Grrr! she thinks.

Then she leans right up to Rito's ear, and screams, "WAKE UP, YOU BEAST!"

Rito is so shocked, he falls out of bed headfirst. "Ouch. Geez, Nana, what was that for?" he asks, rubbing his head.

"For sleeping in, you lazy bum. Now hurry up, and come down for breakfast already," she replies. Then she huffs away, slamming the door behind her.

Rito stands up, and starts getting dressed. Man, what is her deal? Oh, who am I kidding? She's always been like that, he thinks. How am I ever gonna tell her about the harem plan? Then again, do I even want her in the harem? I mean, sure, I like her. But is that enough? Ugh, what am I gonna do?

000000

On a sunny day inside Nana's cyber safari, Nana leads Mea through the jungle.

"I mean, seriously, what am I? His mobile alarm clock?" complains Nana.

"Well, I wouldn't mind waking Rito up every morning, hehe. Now, will you please tell me where we're going?" asks Mea.

"Relax. It's a surprise," says Nana, cheerfully.

"Ooh, I like surprises," says Mea. As they walk, she takes in the green surroundings. Everything is serene, exotic and enchanting. "This place is incredible. I wanna see every inch of it," she says.

"I know, right? You're welcome to come by tomorrow," says Nana.

"Tomorrow? Oh, thanks, Nana, but sorry. I've gotta train Rito tomorrow after school," says Mea.

"Oh, I see," says Nana. Then she pauses for a moment, and says, "You know, Mea, you've been hanging around Rito quite a lot recently."

"Yeah, sorry about that too. I wanna spend more time together, Nana. It's just with this whole Stem thing going on, I wanna be there for him, you know," says Mea.

"No, no, I get it. I mean, it's not like I'm feeling lonely or anything," says Nana, trying and failing to play it off. "Ahem. I'm just concerned about that beast doing something indecent to you."

"Surprisingly, he hasn't. Not for a while, actually. And it's really upsetting me," says Mea.

"WHAAATTT?" shrieks Nana, stopping in her tracks. "Upsetting you? But why?"

"Haven't you noticed? Rito hasn't fallen or groped anyone in a long time. It's almost like he can't do it anymore. In fact, just last week, I snuck into his bed to sleep with him," says Mea.

"You did what?" asks Nana.

"Yep. But in bed together, he didn't touch me once all night. Not like he usually does. Since then, I haven't snuck into his bed anymore. And not just me; Neme, Momo, they've stopped sleeping with him too. Honestly, we all miss the old, fun, perverted Rito," says Mea.

"But why? I don't get it," says Nana.

"Because that what makes him Rito. It's one of the reasons I…" says Mea, stopping herself and blushing. "One of the reasons I care about him. And I'm worried I'm not gonna care about him as much if he starts to change."

"Well, if you ask me, I say good riddance to his beastly antics. About time, they got lost. Besides, you know there's more to him than his clumsy perversion," says Nana.

"Oh, really?" says Mea, getting right into Nana's face with a smug look. "Like what?"

Forced to say something positive about Rito, Nana's cheeks start to redden. "Nothing! I take it back! There is nothing good about that idiot. Now come on. The cave's just over this hill," she says, storming off.

Mea giggles to herself, and follows Nana. Oh, Nana, you're so adorable, she thinks. And I hope you can forgive me for that little fib. The truth is...if Rito spends too much time with one girl in particular, he won't have the energy to go after any of the others. That's why Momo, Neme and I agreed to stop seducing him at night. This is for the good of Project Harem.

Nana and Mea reach the base of the hill, and begin their ascent. I just don't get it, thinks Nana. What does Mea see in him? Or Big Sis for that matter?

Her mind fills with memories of Rito, like when he kissed Lala in the backyard after she gave him the Neme-watches. If she really loves him, I'll support her.

Then she remembers Rito kissing Rin at the front gate that night. But then again, if he really is building a harem, shouldn't I convince Big Sis to give up on him? Argh, I just don't know what to do. And Mama didn't make it any easier.

000000

The previous night in Nana's bedroom.

Nana lays in bed, speaking to her mother, Sephie, via face-time on a pink laptop. "But Mama, you met him yourself. He's nothing but a clumsy, lecherous beast. Okay, sure he's kind and brave every now and then, but I just don't want Big Sis to get hurt."

"I don't see the problem, dear. In fact, I'll let you in on a little secret," replies Sephie.

"Okay," says Nana, giddy with curiosity.

"Well...your father was just like Rito at his age," reveals Sephie.

"What?" says Nana, sliding off the bed headfirst.

"Sweetie, are you alright?" asks Sephie.

Nana gets back into bed, and rubs her brow. "Ow. I'm fine, but very confused. What do you mean Daddy was like Rito?"

"Just what I said. He was clumsy, foolish, insecure and had a few…shall we say, perverted accidents of his own," says Sephie.

"Huh? No way!" says Nana.

"I was there, sweetie. I witnessed them all with my own eyes, and fell victim to a few of them myself. However, I also witnessed his growth. Now he's the king of the universe, the man I love, and the father of my three beautiful girls," says Sephie.

"Well, erm, e-even if Daddy was like Rito, there's no way Rito will ever be like Daddy," says Nana.

"Nana, are you sure Rito is as bad a guy as you make him out to be? Or are you just trying so hard to deny your own feelings for him?" asks Sephie.

"EEEHHHHH! My own f-f-feelings? Mama, I don't feel anything for him! Besides, ahem, he's already betrothed to Big Sis," says Nana.

"I don't think she'd mind sharing him with you. And for that matter, neither would I," says Sephie.

"What?" asks Nana.

"I know about the harem plan, sweetie. I learned about it through Momo," says Sephie.

"You did?" asks Nana.

"And I have to admit...I think it's the best option for everyone," says Sephie.

"What? Mama, why?" asks Nana.

"Nana, your father was born into the royal family. He spent his childhood being groomed to become the next king. Rito didn't have that experience. Going from an earthling commoner to king of Deviluke will be an overwhelming transition for him. As such, he's gonna need the love and support of many wives by his side. Not only that, but he needs to produce heirs to carry on in his place. For that reason, as I said, I wouldn't mind Lala, Momo and even you becoming his brides. It'd be the best thing for you, him and the universe," explains Sephie.

...

"Well, even if I were to agree with you, there's no way Daddy ever would," argues Nana.

"Probably not, but then again, it's not him to decide," says Sephie.

"I don't know, Mama. I just don't see him the way everyone else does, and I don't think I can ever accept a harem. Even if you, Momo and Big Sis do," says Nana.

"That's fine, sweetie. No one's forcing you to do anything. If you don't love Rito, that's okay. But at least ask yourself this. Do you think you'll find another man as kind, brave and good as him?" asks Sephie. Her question leaves Nana dumbfounded.

000000

Back to Nana and Mea climbing the hill.

No, thinks Nana. If Rito goes through with the harem plan, I'll never respect him again.

She and Mea reach the peak of the hill. As they make their descent, a cave comes into view.

And then, a large, ferocious blue panda emerges from the cave. Mea gasps with fright; Nana runs towards the blue panda.

"Hi, Kor!" says Nana.

At the sight of her, Kor growls his cheerful welcome. Nana runs into Kor's arms, and the two hug.

"I want you to meet somebody. This is Mea, my best friend," says Nana, introducing the skittish Mea to the enormous blue panda.

"H-hello," says Mea.

Kor lunges at her, and squeezes her in a literal bear hug. Mea comically gasps for air. Just then, a pair of blue panda cubs emerge from the cave.

"Atto! Pumpo! How you doing?" asks Nana. Atto and Pumpo scurry into her arms, hugging her.

"Oh, they're so adorable," says Mea, bending down to pet the two cubs.

"Aren't they? They're from the planet Zetsune. Nice place, but terrible food," agrees Nana.

"You were right, Nana. This is quite the surprise," says Mea.

"Oh, no. We haven't even gotten to the best part," says Nana, taking Mea's hand and leading her into the cave. Kor and the two cubs follow them in. Once inside, they encounter another large blue panda laying on the rocks. "This is Ebby. Kor's mate, and the cubs' mother," says Nana. Unlike the other blue pandas, something seems wrong with Ebby.

"Uh, is she alright? She looks like she's in pain," inquires Mea.

"That's because she's pregnant," says Nana, shocking Mea. Nana approaches Ebby, and rests her head against the blue panda's belly. Then she beckons Mea to do the same. Mea carefully steps closer to Ebby, and lays her head on her belly. "Feel that?" asks Nana.

A moment passes, and Mea's face lights up with joy. "I do. I can…I can even hear the little one's heartbeat. Oh, Nana, thank you. Thank you for showing me this," she says.

"Hey, what are best friends for?" says Nana.

"Can I see the baby when she's born?" asks Mea.

"Of course, you can. I'll invite everyone. And it won't be long. Any day now, this family will be blessed with a little girl," says Nana.

"Yay! A little girl!" cheers Mea as she and Nana jump for joy.

Down in the sea, the Dark Rover remains on the ocean floor.

Inside, Stem lays on an operating table. He's in terrible shape following his battle with Yami, Mea and Nemesis. A dozen automatic machines surround the table, and work to repair his damaged body. He passes the time watching a TV hooked up to the ceiling.

The screen plays footage captured from one of Stem's scouting probes; it's the beatdown Stem received from Rito in his Black Darkness form.

Fascinating. Truly fascinating, thinks Stem. I've never felt power like this before, not even from King Gid. Rito Yuki, there's so much more meaning to killing you now. I cannot wait to face you again. But first…

The TV plays the one-sided battle between Stem and the three weapons, and how they defeated him with that gargantuan, energy blade.

I need to get them out of the way first. But how? thinks Stem, staring at his mechanical arm. Every time Gid defeated me, I upgraded my body so I could better my chances for the next fight. I've altered this bag of meat so many times, I am now a shell of my former self. There is nothing more I can improve with mere machines. I've reached my limit. To defeat the three weapons and Rito Yuki, I need some other way to increase my power. I need…

Stem's eyes widen as the realization dawns on him. Then he turns his head, gazing at what appears to be a black cooler underneath his desk. He snaps his fingers, and the cooler suddenly rolls next to the operating table. He snaps again, and the cooler lid flips opens. A cloud of dry ice foams out and dissipates, revealing a glowing, thumping alien heart inside the cooler. Stem stares at the heart with uncertainty. He takes a deep breath, and steels his nerves.

"Prep me for surgery," says Stem. On cue, the machines shift gears; one lifts the heart out of the cooler; another activates a buzzsaw, ready to slice open Stem's chest. "This'll go one of two ways," says Stem to the heart. "Either you'll make me more powerful than Gid, or you'll turn me into a bleeding pretzel. That's why I was saving you for my next fight with that pipsqueak king. I didn't want to risk using my trump card so soon, but things have changed," he says, clocking the footage of Black Darkness Rito. "Do me a favor and don't kill me when you enter my body. Begin procedure," says Stem to the machines. The buzzsaw lowers itself towards Stem's chest. He closes his eyes.

The next day in Rito's classroom.

Rito opens his eyes. "Yeah, yeah. Sorry, I was lost in thought," he says to the teacher returning his test.

"Think nothing of it, my boy," says the teacher as he continues passing out the graded tests.

"WHAAATTT?" shrieks Rito, flabbergasted by the score of 89 marked on his test. Lala, Haruna and Risa swarm his desk.

"Wow, Rito! Congratulations," says Lala.

"Yes. You should be proud of yourself," says Haruna.

"I couldn't have done it without either of you. Thanks for tutoring me all those times, you guys," says Rito, causing Lala and Haruna to blush with joy.

Risa sits on Rito's lap and wraps her arms around his neck, surprising all of them. "Well done, darling. I say you deserve a reward," she says, puckering her lips and inching closer to Rito's face.

"Yikes! Risa, not here," squirms Rito.

Just then, Yui storms over to Rito's desk, and yanks Risa off his lap.

"That's quite enough of that!" scolds Yui.

"Oh, relax, Yui. It's only natural for a girl to reward a boy for all his hard work," says Risa, snatching Rito's test and presenting it to Yui. "See?"

"An 89? Well, ahem, that is rather impressive, especially for Yuki. But still, it doesn't justify any shameless behavior in the middle of class," says Yui.

"Oh, so it's okay as long as we're NOT in class?" teases Risa, making Yui blush.

"Risa, cut it out," says Rito.

"Y-Yes. Please be more mindful of your surroundings," says Haruna.

"Oh, what's the matter, Haruna? Feeling left out?" jokes Risa, about to play with Haruna's breasts like she always does.

"Oooh, I remember that game. Can I play too?" asks Lala, innocently.

"Yeah," answers Risa.

"Wait, you guys," begs Haruna.

"Um, uh," mutters Rito, not sure what to do.

Yui shakes her head in dismay. I can't believe this is what I have to put up with at school, she thinks.

Then she notices Nana in the doorway, beckoning her to come over.

000000

Meanwhile, in the girl's bathroom, Rin, Aya and Saki wash their hands.

"Come on, Aya. I saw you two at Yami's birthday," says Saki.

"What? N-No, that was nothing. Besides, he'd never want me," says Aya.

"Why not? You're smart, pretty, loyal and let's be real, you've got a killer bod. Plus, Ren's not too bad looking himself," says Saki.

"B-But I…" starts Aya.

Saki grips Aya's shoulders. "Listen, you helped Rin and I both with our romances. Don't you think it's time we help you with yours?" she says.

"She's right, Aya," says Rin, who starts to blush. "I have to say, being in love, it feels…wonderful. You deserve to feel it too," she says.

"You guys," says Aya, then she nods her head. "Okay. I'll talk to Ren after lunch," she says.

"That's the spirit," says Saki.

Suddenly, the door slams open as both Yui and Nana race inside to confront the three girls.

"Nana?" wonders Saki.

"And Kolepawa?" wonders Aya.

"For the last time, it's Kotegawa! And Kujou-senpai, is it true? Did you really k-k-ki-kiss Yuki?" asks Yui, red with jealousy.

Rin blushes furiously, and goes silent. Saki and Aya get in front of her to keep Nana and Yui back. "How dare you barge in here with such an accusatory tone," says Saki.

"That's right. Rin did nothing wrong, and she's got nothing to say to you two," says Aya.

"It's okay, Miss Saki, Aya," says Rin, stepping forward between them to face Nana and Yui. "To answer your question, yes, I kissed him," she says.

Yui goes white as a ghost.

"See? What'd I tell ya?" says Nana.

"Actually…I've kissed him a few times already," confesses Rin.

Now Nana goes white too, and Yui is doubly astonished. "What? Why?" she asks.

"Well, because…because I love him," says Rin, smiling whilst blushing.

...

"WHAAAATTTTT?!" scream Nana and Yui together, causing the other girls to cover their ears. "What do you mean you love him? You? Him?" asks Nana.

"This is Yuki we're talking about! Dumb, clumsy, shameless Yuki!" says Yui.

"That's right! He's a beast! An idiotic, disgusting waste of flesh who doesn't deserve to be loved," says Nana.

"Hey, Nana, that's, uh, going a little too far, don't you think?" says Yui.

"Huh? Oh, yeah. Got carried away. But still, Kujou-senpai, Rito? Seriously?" asks Nana.

"I love him. That's all there is to it, and that's all I have to say," says Rin defiantly. Saki and Aya stand next to her; they've got her back and won't allow anyone to question her heart.

Nana and Yui trade looks, not sure what else to say.

"Well spoken, Rin Kujou," says a voice, startling everyone. A stall door opens, and Yami steps out.

"Yami?" asks Nana.

Yami washes her hands at the sink. "Since we're all here, I should take this time to apologize to you, Princess Nana," she says.

"Apologize to me?" asks Nana.

"I already discussed this with Princess Lala, but I wanted you to hear it from me. I too am in love with Rito Yuki," says Yami.

For a moment, the whole restroom goes silent. A bug scurries across the floor, but the girls ignore it, too focused on Yami's bombshell.

"AAAAAHHHHHHHHH!" shriek Nana and Yui.

"Princess, I humbly ask that you refrain from screaming. There are students trying to study in the classroom over," says Yami.

"Huh, so you too, Yami? Well, that's just like Rito," smirks Rin.

"Indeed," says Saki.

"Yep," says Aya.

Nana grabs Yami's shoulders. "Has everyone lost their minds? Kujou-senpai is one thing, but you, Yami? What about Rito being your target? And aren't you always going on about how much you hate perverted things?" she asks.

"I've forfeited my life as an assassin, Princess. Therefore, all my contracts have been voided. And yes, while I still hate perverted things, Rito isn't so perverted anymore. Remember what Dr. Ryouko said?" asks Yami.

Nana realizes that all the girls present were in Mikado's infirmary that day. "Well, yeah. And okay, sure, I haven't seen Rito do anything beastly in a long time. But that doesn't prove anything. What guarantee is there that he's never gonna fall on us again?" she asks.

Yami calmly removes Nana's hands from her shoulders. "Princess Nana, don't you think it's about time we all start being honest with ourselves? Deep down, we know Rito has a kind soul, and most of his accidents weren't always his fault," she says.

Both Nana and Yui mull over her words for a moment, knowing them to be true. Rin smiles; she couldn't agree more. "Even so…you really, actually, seriously love him?" asks Nana.

"I confessed to him when he was attacked by Kuro. Both Mea and Nemesis were there too. And as I've mentioned before, I already discussed this with Princess Lala. At first, I only confessed to Rito for my sake. I didn't want to inconvenience your sister since Rito's her fiancée. But I realized I couldn't keep lying to myself. I don't want to be an assassin anymore. I don't ever want to leave this town nor this planet. And I…I don't want to live without Rito. When I spoke to Princess Lala about this, she accepted my feelings and encouraged me to pursue them. I know it's hard to understand, Princess Nana, and I'm sorry if it feels like I'm betraying you. But I won't apologize for how I feel," says Yami.

"Neither will I. With all due respect, how we feel about Rito is our business. How he feels about us is his. There's nothing more to say," says Rin. Yami nods in agreement.

"This…this is insane," mutters Yui.

Wait, thinks Nana. So is Rito doing it? Is he actually building a harem? Just then, the warning bell rings. Classes will resume again soon.

"Well, then, I think we should all get back to class," says Saki.

"Agree, Miss Saki," says Aya.

"Hold on," interjects Yui. "You said how Yuki feels about you is his business. So, um, if he's willing to kiss you…does that mean he's…?" she asks.

Yami and Rin already promised Rito they'd keep his harem plan a secret. "Kotegawa, need I remind you that Rito's life is still in danger," says Yami, dodging the question.

"What's that got to do with anything?" asks Nana.

"What if Rito is killed by Stem today? Would that make you happy?" asks Yami. Both Nana and Yui are devastated by her question. Even Rin, Saki and Aya appear taken aback.

"What? No. Of course, I wouldn't be happy," says Nana.

"Yami, how could you even ask such a thing?" asks Yui.

"Because you shouldn't be wasting time being mad at him. Don't forget, Stem came into Rito's house. He may even come for Rito here at school. It's clear to me there's no line Stem won't cross, and there's no telling when he could take Rito away from us. I will do everything in my power to stop Stem. But if I can't, if Rito dies, then I want to make as many precious memories with him as I can," says Yami.

"As do I," says Rin. "But he's not going to die. After all, we're the ones training him. He's gonna live a long life, and I wanna be a part of it as much as possible. That's how much I love him. Now if you'll excuse us," she says, heading for the door.

Yami, Saki and Aya follow after Rin, leaving Nana and Yui to ponder in the restroom. They trade defeated looks; there's really nothing more to say.

000000

Later in Dr. Ryouko's infirmary, Mikado, Tearju and Oshizu enjoy a pot of tea together. Rito and Momo appear in the doorway.

"You wanted to see us, Dr. Ryouko?" says Rito, knocking on the open door.

"Ah, Yuki, Momo, come in," says Mikado.

"Where's Celine?" asks Momo, closing the door behind her.

"Oh, don't worry," says Oshizu, offering them both cups of tea. "Yui came by earlier to pick her up. She likes taking her around the school on her breaks," she says.

"Kotegawa's such a caring girl. If I didn't know any better, I'd say she could be Celine's mother," says Tearju.

"But that would make Yuki her father, wouldn't it?" teases Mikado. Tearju and Rito spit-take their teas, and blush. "Oh, you both are so cute," says Mikado.

"As much as I love teasing Rito…" starts Momo.

"Right, right," says Mikado. "So, Yuki, remember how we tried to cure your perversion a while back, and we failed?" she asks.

"Yeah," says Rito, not sure or liking where this is going.

"Well, we've been keeping an eye on you for the last couple weeks. And by we, I mean the three of us. Plus Kotegawa," says Mikado.

"Plus Yami," says Tearju.

"Plus Nana," says Oshizu.

"Oh, plus Kujou and her two friends," says Mikado.

"What do you mean keeping an eye on me?" asks Rito.

"Very shady," says Momo.

"It's nothing to worry about. Every now and then, one of them just pops in here, and tells me how many times you've touched, groped or fallen onto a girl," says Mikado.

"Wait, what?" asks Rito.

"You've been keeping tabs on Rito's accidents?" asks Momo.

"We have, and we apologize. But just so you know, every day since we asked them, all of those girls have been reporting the same number," says Tearju.

"Zero," says Oshizu.

"Huh?" asks Rito.

"Now that you mention it, Rito hasn't done any of those things to me-I mean, to anyone recently. Right, Rito? Surely, you've noticed?" insists Momo.

"Well, uh," starts Rito.

"Wait, Rito, you mean you've haven't been paying attention to your own perversion? How do you not notice when you fall onto a girl?" asks Oshizu.

"I mean, it's not exactly something I think about doing. Nor something I keep count of, unlike all of you," says Rito.

"Hehe, fair enough," says Oshizu.

"So, did you call us here to tell us Rito's perversion is over?" asks Momo.

"Seriously? I'm cured? But how?" asks Rito, elated.

"That's what we're trying to figure out, which is why we wanted to ask you directly. Yuki, we did everything we could to cure your perversion, and nothing worked. But then something happened to you, or you did something yourself, and that's what worked. I guess, as a medical expert, I'm just curious and fascinated about this new development. I don't mean to pry into your personal life, nor do I wanna get your hopes up. But if you'd be willing to tell us anything new in your life, perhaps we can deduce what it was that's affecting your perversion," explains Mikado.

"Positively affecting it," says Tearju.

"Yes, very positively. Think about it, Rito. Tell us what you can, and there's a chance you'll never fall onto any girls again," says Oshizu.

"One moment, please," says Momo. Then she turns Rito around so they can speak in private whispers. "Rito, you don't suppose the harem plan is the cause of your perverted reduction?" she whispers.

"What? No. If anything, I figured that would only increase the number of my accidents," whispers Rito.

"Well, clearly, it hasn't. You got a bunch of zeroes to prove it," whispers Momo.

"You think I should tell them?" asks Rito.

"It's up to you," whispers Momo.

Rito takes a moment to think. It's not like any of them were in my dream, so maybe it'd be okay to tell them, he ponders. Then he exhales and faces the others, making his decision. "Oshizu, you might wanna brew another pot of tea," he says.

Several minutes later, Rito finishes explaining everything; his nightmare, his harem plan, his choice to become king of Deviluke, and the number of girls he's already charmed. Mikado, Tearju and Oshizu sit frozen in disbelief, mesmerized by the story.

"Wow, I don't have the words," says Mikado.

"Oshizu, may I please have another cup?" asks Tearju.

"Of course," responds Oshizu, refilling Tearju's cup, and then her own while she's at it.

"I'm sorry. I know this sounds gross and obscene," says Rito.

"Honestly, it was all my idea to begin with," says Momo.

"It's okay. None of us are mad. In fact, I think we've found your cure," says Mikado.

"You have?" asks Tearju.

"Yes," says Mikado. "Yuki, your fear of girls was the cause of your perversion in the first place. But over the course of the last year, you've gained more confidence and have grown friendlier with girls. Heck, you're so bold as to confess your love and propose to…how many was it?" she asks.

"With Mea and Yami, that makes nine girls so far," says Oshizu, counting on her fingers.

"Nine girls. Nine girls," says Mikado, genuinely impressed. "Anyway, it seems that this plan of yours, fueled by confidence and not lust, is what's been decreasing your accidents," she explains.

"So what you're saying is…Rito's perversion kept happening because he WASN'T building a harem?" asks Momo.

"Pretty much," says Mikado.

"Seriously?" asks Rito.

Momo can't help but giggle, knowing she was right all along.

"And here's the kicker, Yuki," continues Mikado. "I theorize that the more girls you accept into your harem, the fewer accidents you'll have. In other words, keep building your harem," she says.

"Yes, keep going, Rito," agrees Oshizu. Though I think a harem is revolting, as long as it keeps him from falling onto Haruna, and as long as she's okay with a harem, I'm all for it, she thinks.

"Just keep it PG-13, okay? I wouldn't want one of our best students to get corrupted, hehe," says Tearju, hiding her worry over Rito's possible playboy antics.

"So…you're not upset?" asks Rito.

"Of course not. I'm happy for you, Yuki. Not to mention, this plan of yours has made all those other girls happy. If this is what you and they want, you have my blessing," says Mikado.

"I couldn't have said it better," says Tearju.

"Yeah. And we promise we won't tell nobody," says Oshizu.

"You guys are the best," says Rito.

"Yes, thank you all. And don't worry. I'll make sure Rito gets a hundred girls, so that he'll never fall on anyone again," says Momo.

"Huh?" says Rito with a red face. "Wait, I never said a hundred girls."

"Hehe, come on, Rito. Later, everyone," says Momo, clutching his arm and leading him out the room.

"Wait, Momo," says Rito as he's dragged away.

The door closes behind them, leaving Mikado, Tearju and Oshizu alone.

"So, a harem, huh?" wonders Oshizu.

"You thinking about joining it, Oshizu?" teases Mikado.

"What? Oh, no, no. I like Rito, but I wouldn't say I love him. He's just a really good friend. Besides, it's not like every girl in his life has to join his harem," says Oshizu.

"Hmm, hmm, that's true," says Mikado.

"Ah," sighs Tearju.

"What's wrong, Tear?" asks Mikado.

"Oh, nothing. It's just…" starts Tearju.

"Wait! Miss Tear, don't tell me YOU wanna join Rito's harem?" asks Oshizu.

Tearju's face blushes like a tomato. "Ay! No, no, no! How could I? After all, he's a student, and I'm his teacher. It could never happen," she says.

"Actually," says Mikado. "On Deviluke, polygamy isn't an issue. And neither is the age gap between lovers. So if Yuki were interested in adding any older women to his harem, he could," she says.

"Well, uh, I, uh," says Tearju.

"Dr. Ryouko, you too?" asks Oshizu.

"Who knows? Maybe there's a chance, hmm-hmm," teases Mikado.

000000

Later that day at the river.

Rito is up in the air, fighting against Yami, Mea and Nemesis all at once. They use their blades, cannons and bare fists. He fights back using only the Neme-watches, refusing to rely on any dark matter within his body save for the wings. The watches have a new design; they've been upgraded courtesy of Lala. Not only that, but they contain twice as much power, and last twice as long before they start blinking yellow.

During the fight, Rito evades and blocks their attacks. Then he strikes back using a variety of energy blasts made of dark matter. Yami threatened him not to hold back on them, or else he'd be punished; he's heeding her warning, and attacking with everything he's got. He even conjures a pair of dark matter energy swords, and fights using techniques he picked up from Rin.

While Rito takes a few hits from the girls, since they're not holding back either, it's nothing too severe for him. With Nemesis' power inside him, his body's grown more durable to pain. If he were still completely human, he'd need a wheelchair ten seconds into the sparring session.

The three girls combine their power, and fire an enormous energy blast at Rito. He creates a sphere of dark matter, shielding himself from the blast. He holds it back as best as he can, but the shield starts to crack. The girls increase their power, purposefully trying to break through the shield, but Rito doesn't give up. He keeps the shield going until the energy beam finally dissipates; he managed to outlast their attack.

"Okay, I think I need a break," says Rito as he just lets himself fall to the ground, too exhausted to fly down. He hits the grassy hill with a loud thud, but doesn't seem to care, and it doesn't cause him any pain.

The three girls fly down, and collapse on the grass next to him, all worn out. They all suck in great gulps of air.

"It's been a while since I've had to catch my breath," says Yami.

"Yeah. That's gotta be our toughest training session yet," says Mea.

"And it's only gonna get tougher. There may be more dangerous enemies in the future, so we'll all need to keep getting stronger to defeat them and protect our friends," says Nemesis.

"Never thought I'd hear you say those words, Nemesis," says Rito.

"Fufu, me neither. I blame you for that," jokes Nemesis, and the others laugh.

Rito stares at the Neme-watch on his right hand, then at the hand itself. "Hey, guys, am I…still me?"

"What do you mean?" asks Mea.

"My body's changing. I know it was my choice to use Nemesis' power, but even so, I'm worried," says Rito.

"Because of Black Darkness?" asks Nemesis.

"I'm afraid of losing myself to that power again. But I'm even more afraid of hurting those I love with it," says Rito.

"That's not gonna happen, Rito," says Yami, giving him a lap pillow. "We'll make sure it won't," she says with a smile.

"Yami," says Rito.

"That's right, Rito," says Mea, cuddling up to his left side. "As for your body, it doesn't matter to us if you're human, alien, or a bit of both. We still love you," she says.

"Yep," says Nemesis, cuddling up to his right side. "On that note, Rito, I'd like to go out on a date with you," she says.

"Huh?" asks Rito.

"After all, I've been training you all this time. Don't you think I deserve a reward for all my help?" teases Nemesis.

"Hey, no fair, Neme. I've been training Rito too, and I also want a date," says Mea.

"If anyone should get a date, it's the one who's protected him the most. Don't you agree, dear sisters?" says Yami, threatening Mea and Nemesis with her hair blades, but neither of them back down.

Rito looks between the girls, anxious that they're about to start a bloody battle over him that will destroy the whole town. "Okay, okay! I'll take each of you out on a date when I have the time. Sound good?" he asks.

The three girls consider his offer, and smile. Yami reshapes her hair back to normal. "Very good, Rito. Don't forget the other girls as well," she says.

"Ah, man. This harem stuff ain't easy," says Rito, making the girls giggle.

000000

The sun sets as Rito walks the three girls back to their home. Even though all four of them can fly, they enjoy walking together. Nemesis and Mea each cling to one of Rito's arms; Yami glares at him, making him sweat.

"So, um, what's it like living together with Tearju?" asks Rito.

"Oh, it's the best," says Mea.

"Indeed. We're like a real family now," says Nemesis.

"Yes, it feels just like old times," says Yami, smiling to herself. "By the way, Tear's having dinner at Dr. Ryouko's place, so I'll be on cooking duty for tonight."

"Yummy. Your food's always the best, Big Sis Yami," says Mea.

"Hey, Rito, fufu, since Tearju's gone, we'll have the place to ourselves for the night. Why don't you come in for a bite? And I don't mean dinner, fufu," teases Nemesis.

"Huh?" asks Rito, flushing like crazy.

"Yeah, Rito, what do ya say?" teases Mea as she strokes her finger across his chest.

"I, erm, I," says Rito. Yami spins around with a blazing aura and her hair-blades ready to slice the three of them into pieces, scaring all of them. "No thanks, I'll pass," he says.

A few moments later, the four of them round the corner and reach their building.

But then they see Nana waiting by the lobby doors, leaning against the wall with her arms crossed. The four of them approach her.

"Nana?" asks Rito.

"What brings you here at this hour?" asks Mea.

"Did you forget, Mea?" asks Nana.

"Eh? Oh, gosh! The blue pandas! We were supposed to play with them today! I'm so sorry, Nana, I totally forgot," says Mea.

"I called and texted you over and over again," says Nana.

Mea whips out her phone. "Yeah, the battery died."

"How convenient," says Nana.

"Come on, Nana. It's not like that," says Mea. "I was just-"

"Training Rito. Again. I know," says Nana.

"Nana," starts Rito.

"Shut up. Mea, tell me the truth. Are you in love with Rito?" asks Nana, throwing everyone for a loop.

Rito's about to speak again, but Yami grabs his hand, insisting he let Mea handle this.

Mea looks Nana right in the eye. "Yes, Nana. I am in love with him," she says whilst blushing.

With that, Nana turns to Nemesis.

"You know I do," says Nemesis, answering before Nana's even asked.

Nana stomps up to Rito. "So…my big sister's not enough for you? You gotta have these three, Kujou-Senpai, AND my twin sister too? How many are you gonna take, you beast?"

Rito opens his mouth to speak. "Nana-"

"I told you I would never accept a harem, but you're going through with it anyway, aren't you?" asks Nana.

Rito starts again. "I can explain-"

SLAP!

Nana slaps Rito hard across the face, shocking Mea and the others. As Rito nurses his face, Nana's glaring eyes become misty. She unfurls her wings, and takes off without another word.

"Nana, wait," says Mea, but Nemesis grabs her arm.

"Let her go," says Nemesis. "She needs to be alone right now."

"Nana," mutters Rito, feeling guilty.

Up in the sky, Nana flies as fast as she can back home, using the adrenaline to mask her sorrow. Why? she thinks as she wipes her eyes. Why is this happening? What am I even crying about? If Mea loves him, fine. But I never will. Never.

000000

The next morning at Rito's house. Grey clouds form in the sky, overcasting the town with gloomy atmosphere.

Inside, the atmosphere isn't any better. Rito, Celine, Mikan, Lala and Momo sit at the table, eating breakfast in uncomfortable silence. There's an extra plate of food in front of an empty chair where Nana should be, but there's no sign of her.

Lala stands up. "Maybe I should go try again."

"We tried talking to her a million times, Big Sis, but she won't leave her room. Knowing her, she's probably hanging out with her animal friends in her safari," says Momo.

"Yeah, you're right," says Lala, sitting back down. "She's gotten mad before, and I've always known how to make her feel better. But it's never been this bad."

"This is all my fault," says Rito.

"Don't. Don't do that to yourself, Rito," says Mikan.

"She's right. This was Nana's choice. Whether she likes it or not, she's gonna have to get over it," says Momo.

"And if she doesn't?" asks Rito.

"She will," says Lala, kissing Rito's hand.

Just then, the sound of footsteps thumping their way downstairs grabs everyone's attention. Celine claps with joy.

"Wow, excellent timing," says Mikan.

Nana rushes into the living room, and catches her breath. Then everyone notices the tears in her eyes.

"Nana, what's wrong?" asks Lala.

"Big Sis, it's Ebby!" says Nana.

000000

Inside the cyber safari, the group flies fast over the jungle. Nana leads the way while Rito carries Mikan, and Momo carries Celine; Lala isn't with them.

The group descends towards the cave, and comes across a grim sight.

Ebby growls in immense pain. Kor, Atto and Pumpo surround her, worried; they all have tears in their eyes, fearing the worst is about to happen.

"What's wrong with her?" asks Mikan.

"I don't know. She was just going into labor, but then...well...," says Nana, rushing to Ebby's side. "Ebby, Ebby, you're gonna be okay. The baby too," she says, not very convincingly.

"Is there anything we can do?" asks Rito, turning to Momo.

"I'm not sure," replies Momo.

Suddenly, a teleporting portal appears behind them. Lala, Mikado and Oshizu emerge from the portal, carrying bags of medical gear.

"Phew. I was scared our clothes would disappear," worries Oshizu.

"Nana, I brought Dr. Ryouko," says Lala as they join the others.

"Doctor, I-I don't, I don't know…" whimpers Nana.

Mikado touches Nana's shoulder. "It's okay, Nana. But I need you to back away, so we help her, alright."

Nana reluctantly does as she's told, as do the other three blue pandas.

Mikado and Oshizu get to work. Everyone else watches in painful anxiety. Mikan stands next to Rito, and he pulls her in for a half-hug. Mikado calls out a tool, and Oshizu hands it to her. They work fast, examining every part of Ebby's body. They place a cold, wet rag on her head to keep her cool.

"It's internal. She needs clemenroot, and fast," says Mikado.

"Clemenroot?" asks Mikan.

"It's a medicinal herb that only grows once every spring on Zetsune. Female blue pandas seldom need it when they go into labor," explains Lala.

"But why now? Ebby never needed it before," worries Nana.

Clemenroot, thinks Rito. Why does that sound so familiar?

"Oh, no," says Oshizu, digging through the bags.

"What is it, Oshizu?" asks Mikado.

"Doctor, we don't have any clemenroot," replies Oshizu, shocking everyone.

"What? No, no, you have to. You must," says Nana, grabbing medical bags. Then she dumps out the contents of every bag, and hastily shifts through them for what they need.

"Nana," starts Momo.

"It's gotta be here, it's gotta be," says Nana as tears fill her eyes.

"But it's not," says Oshizu.

Nana squeezes Oshizu's shoulders. "Then there's some at your clinic, right? Well, go back. Go get it! Hurry, please!" she begs.

"We don't have any, Nana," says Mikado in a defeated tone, coming to a realization.

"What?" asks Nana.

"We used up the last of it on a client two weeks ago. I ordered another supply shipment from Zetsune, but it won't arrive until next month," says Mikado.

"Then let's go to Zetsune. Right now. You can send me there, can't you, Big Sis? With your warp machine thingy?" asks Nana, desperate.

"I'm sorry, Nana, but it won't take you that far. I'd have to rebuild the device from scratch, and that'll take days," says Lala.

"What're you saying? What are all of you saying?" weeps Nana.

"Nana," repeats Momo, inching closer to her twin.

"No. No, no, no! Ebby is not gonna die! The baby is not gonna die!" weeps Nana, growing hysterical. "Help them! Please help them! Somebody! Anybody!" she screams.

Momo tackles Nana from behind, and hugs her with all her strength as tears stream down her face. Nana bawls her eyes out, hugging Momo back. Lala and Celine hug each other as they cry. Kor roars, tears flowing from his eyes; his two cubs cuddle next to him, weeping like babies. Oshizu feels herself crying, but tries not to. Mikado lowers her head in defeat.

"I am so sorry, Ebby," says Mikado, taking Ebby's paw. Ebby whines, and begins to fall asleep, never to wake again.

Mikan cries her eyes out as Rito hugs her with a defiant look on his face. No, he thinks. Not like this. Come on, Rito. Think. Think! If there was ever a time for you to stop being an idiot, it's now! Clemenroot. I know I've seen it somewhere before, but where? Wait a second!

000000

That one day in the park, Rito and Yami visited a bookstore, and ate taiyaki on a bench.

"Yeah, I know. Um, by the way, is that book any good?" asks Rito, gesturing to Yami's book about alien wildlife.

"It's incredible," says Yami.

As she rambles on, Rito catches a glimpse of the page she's reading; there's a picture of a weed-like plant with blue and green mushrooms on its sides. The label at the bottom of the page reads: clemenroot.

000000

"That's it!" yells Rito, shocking everyone. "Momo, we have to go to your cyber garden now."

"What? Why?" asks Momo.

"There's no time to explain. Lala, can you warp us both there?" asks Rito.

"Uh, sure," says Lala.

"Do it now, please," orders Rito.

"Rito, what's going on?" asks Mikan.

"I know where to find clemenroot. I'll be back as soon as I can," says Rito.

"Rito," starts Nana, calming down.

"I'll find it, Nana. I promise," swears Rito. Lala activates the warp portal, and Rito runs through it. "Come on, Momo," he says.

"Right behind you," says Momo.

"Momo, take this with you," says Lala, tossing the device to Momo.

"Thanks, Big Sis," says Momo, disappearing into the portal after Rito.

"Good luck," says Mikado.

Nana stares off where the portal disappeared, silently praying.

000000

Several agonizing, eternal moments pass by.

Mikado, Oshizu and Nana tend to Ebby, doing their best to ease her pain. Lala, Mikan and Celine comfort Kor, Atto and Pumpo. All of the other alien animals gather around the cave, watching in worry.

Nana holds Ebby's paw, and touches her forehead against it.

I'm sorry, Rito, she prays. I trust you with my life. I know you're not doing this because of last night. You're doing this, because you truly care about Ebby and her baby, even though you haven't even met them. That's just who you are, and that's how you've always been. I trust you, and I believe in you. So please, please…

Suddenly, another portal appears in the middle of the animal crowd, scaring some of them away. Rito and Momo sprint out of the portal, covered in dirt and charging for the cave with bundles of weeds in their arms; weeds with blue and green mushrooms.

"They're back!" yells Mikan, overjoyed.

"You've got the clemenroot!" says Oshizu.

"Oh, we got it, alright," says Momo.

"Ebby, is she…?" asks Rito.

"It's not too late. Give it to us, hurry," says Mikado.

Rito and Momo hand her and Oshizu the bundles of clemenroot, not having to be told twice. With lightning speed, Mikado and Oshizu crunch up the clemenroot in a bowl, and fill it with water, turning the herb into some form of pasty, green stew. Then they carefully assist Ebby with drinking the stew.

Meanwhile, Rito, his friends and the blue pandas wait outside with the crowd of alien animals. They wait in somber, unbearable silence. Grey clouds blot out the sun.

Lala notices Rito and Momo's disheveled appearances. "Rito, Momo, are either of you hurt?" she asks.

"Oh, no, we're fine, Big Sis," says Momo.

"Yeah, just had a little trouble finding the clemenroot," says Rito.

"How did you find it, Rito? How'd you even know what it looked like?" asks Mikan.

"Well, I remember reading about it from a book Yami showed me once. Then I remembered seeing it at the cyber garden when I last went there," says Rito.

"That's it? You just saw it there and remembered? You bet everything on a hunch?" asks Mikan.

"Believe me, I was just as stupefied as you were, Mikan. I didn't even think I had any clemenroot in my garden to begin with. But then I remembered collecting seeds from Zetsune. What with everything happening, I kinda forgot I even planted them there. I'm sorry," says Momo.

"Momo," says Nana, taking Momo's hand. "You have nothing to be sorry about," she says, smiling at her sister. Momo smiles back. Then Nana turns to Rito. "And Rito…I…I," she says until a sound cuts her off.

The sound of a crying, newborn baby.

...

All heads spin to the dark cave. No one can see what's inside. Everyone bolts up as the crying grows louder. The grey clouds part, and the sun shines through the sky, beaming down on the cave. Mikado and Oshizu stumble outside first, exhausted. They give the faintest of smiles just as Ebby walks out on three paws, cradling her newborn cub in the other. They're alive and healthy.

Kor, Atto and Pumpo rush for Ebby and the baby. The five of them group-hug.

"Ebby!" yells Nana, sprinting towards the family, wrapping her arms around Ebby's hide. Ebby hugs her back, as do the other blue pandas.

"YAAAAAYYYYYY!" cheers Lala, Mikan, Momo and Celine, shedding tears of joy.

Not just them, but all of the animals cheer their hearts out; howling, roaring, chirping, barking, all kinds of sounds thundering in delight.

While everyone else goes wild, Rito remains composed. He's just happy and content that everything worked out.

Ebby carefully hands the baby over to Nana; she cradles her lovingly. "Come here, you guys," says Nana, beckoning everyone to come see the baby.

"Oh, she's adorable," says Lala.

"So cute," agrees Mikan.

"A healthy baby girl. Good for you, Ebby," says Mikado.

The baby girl gazes at all the new faces around her, but it's Rito's whose stands out the most. The baby cheers and reaches for Rito, wanting to be held by him.

"Looks like she likes you, Rito," says Momo.

"She does?" asks Rito.

"Rito," says Nana.

Saying nothing else, she offers the baby to Rito.

He gulps, holds out his hands, and takes her into his arms. She cheers, and playfully scratches at his neck. "Haha, hey, that tickles," he laughs, causing the baby to giggle too. "Welcome to the world, little one."

Everyone watches them together in awe.

Nana stares at Rito, seeing how much love he's giving the baby just from his smile and laughter alone.

At that moment, all the memories flash before our eyes...

000000

When Nana fell off the giant alien tree, Rito ran and caught her, saving her life for the first time.

At Haruna's apartment, Haruna told Nana she loves Rito because of the warmth inside him.

When she asked Rito for advice about cheering Mea up, he suggested she make Mea laugh.

When Rito and Yami's hands were stuck together, Rito wasn't able to eat with one hand during dinner, and Nana considered feeding him.

When Nana was crying in her cyber safari after her friendship with Mea was over, Rito hugged her, and encouraged her to make up with Mea.

During the town festival, she offered Rito some cotton candy.

When Rin got possessed by Bladix and attacked Nana, Rito swooped into save her.

When Lala wanted to kiss Rito, but he wasn't so sure he wanted to himself yet, Nana understood his reason, and discussed it with Lala.

When Momo revealed Project Harem to Nana, Mea said she was okay with it.

When Lala's vacuum invention went out of control at school, Nana and Rito worked together to stop it.

They worked together again to help Yami get back to normal after she turned into Golden Darkness.

When Rito told Nana that she was cute just the way she is, and didn't care about the size of her breasts, she was speechless.

000000

Nana watches Rito with the baby blue panda, and a single tear slides down her face.

Okay, okay, she thinks. So I guess I really am...in love with him.

"We still have to name her," notes Mikado.

"Yeah, you're right," says Lala.

"You do it, Rito," says Nana, surprising everyone.

"Are you sure, Nana? Shouldn't you do it?" asks Rito.

"You're the one who saved her," replies Nana.

"I agree. Even though I helped, a little, it was your idea to go to my garden," says Momo.

"Come on, bro, name her already," goads Mikan.

Rito clears his throat, shaking off how overwhelmed he feels. He looks at the baby in his arms, and takes a moment to consider a name for her. "Uh, how 'bout…Areya?" he says. The baby cub cheers with joy.

"Sounds like she likes it," says Mikado.

Kor, Ebby, Atto and Pumpo all growl with approval.

"She's not the only one," says Oshizu.

"Areya. I love it," says Momo.

"Me too," says Lala.

"Not bad, bro," says Mikan. Celine cheers in agreement.

"It's perfect. Thank you, Rito," says Nana with a smile.

"Hehe, no sweat," says Rito, rubbing the back of his head, embarrassed from all the praise.

000000

Day turns to night in the safari, and there's a jungle party going on.

Everyone celebrates the birth of the new baby Areya. Rito, Nana, Lala, Momo, Mikan, Celine, Mikado, Oshizu, Mea, Nemesis, Yami, Tearju and all of the alien animals enjoy the night together.

Mikan and Yami serve the food; it's delicious, which makes Yami happy. Momo flies around with Areya. Rito dances with Lala. Everyone's having a great time.

During the party, Nana stands before the three weapon sisters in private.

"Mea, Yami, Nemesis…I'm sorry for the way I acted last night," she says.

"Fufu, it's cool," says Nemesis.

"Yes. Don't fret about it, Princess Nana," says Yami.

"That's right. Tonight is a joyous occasion. Let's be merry, and just enjoy ourselves," says Mea, wrapping Nana in a half-hug.

"Yeah," says Nana.

"Although, there is someone else you should be apologizing to," says Mea, gesturing to Rito as he switches dance partners.

"Don't worry, I will," says Nana.

000000

Later that night, Rito lies alone in bed, wide awake.

Man, what a night, he thinks. I'm so happy for Ebby and her family. I can't wait to see them all again.

A knock on the door snaps him out of his thoughts. "Yes?" he says. The door opens, and Nana enters, wearing her pajamas and holding her pillow. Rito springs upright. "Nana?" he asks.

Nana's face flushes as she walks to Rito's bed, raises the blanket and crawls onto the mattress.

"Hey, what're you…?" asks Rito.

"Don't speak," says Nana. "Can you please just…hold me?"

Rito doesn't react at first, totally confused and horrified of what might happen if he does as he's told.

"Please, Rito?" she asks again.

With that, Rito gulps and embraces Nana.

"Wow, you really do feel warm," she says.

They lay still and quiet for a moment.

"Hey," says Nana.

"Yeah?" asks Rito.

Nana wraps her arms around him. "Thank you for saving Ebby and Areya today," she says as her eyes become misty. "And…I'm sorry. I'm sorry, Rito, for how I treated you. Not just last night, but for all of it. Everything I've ever said or done to you since we've met, I'm sorry. I'm so sorry."

"Nana…I'm sorry too," he replies.

...

...

...

"I…I love you, Nana," says Rito.

Nana gasps in surprise. "You do? Even after…everything?"

"I do," he says.

Nana gazes into his eyes as another memory fills her mind.

000000

After the party, Lala was getting ready for bed when Nana walked in.

They chatted for a while before the real talk began.

Nana confessed to Lala that she's in love with Rito. Lala jumped for joy, accepted her sister's love for her betrothed, and encouraged Nana to join the harem. Nana mentioned Haruna, but Lala told her not to worry, assuring her that Haruna was okay with it too.

Nana tackled Lala onto her bed, and the two sisters hugged, happy to understand one another.

000000

In Rito's bed, Nana smiles at Rito.

"I love you too," she says.

Rito smiles back. And then, ever so slightly, he leans closer to her. Nana backs up a bit at first, but then she closes the gap between their lips. They break off, and kiss again. Rito becomes more aggressive, kissing Nana with greater passion.

"Okay, stop," she says.

"Huh?" he asks.

"If you keep this up, you'll do something beastly for sure. Oh, and if you so much as touch any part of me while we sleep, accident or not, I will pummel you into oblivion. Got it?" she threatens.

"I won't, I won't," he panics, unsure if she's joking or not.

Nana giggles, and cuddles even closer to him. "Hold me as we sleep," she requests.

Rito smiles again, and gently embraces his new lover. The two close their eyes as they drift off to sleep.

"Goodnight," he says.

"Goodnight," she replies.

I did it, thinks Rito. I got Nana. I actually got Nana.

Mama, thinks Nana. I found myself a good man.

000000

Outside in the hall, Momo leans against Rito's door, eavesdropping.

I'm happy for you, Nana, she thinks.

And then, a single tear careens down her face.

000000

Inside the Dark Rover.

The sound of footsteps clunking on the metal floor resonate through the ship.

A figure cloaked in darkness approaches a large mirror.

It's Stem.

Only, it's not the same Stem as before.

His body has been fully repaired. His new heart glows as it beats inside his chest. His chrome-blue appearance has changed into chrome-red; it looks like a river of blood has been splashed and fused onto his armor.

He smiles at his new look, more than satisfied. Then he turns to the monitors, still playing footage of Rito in his Black Darkness form.

"The next time, Rito Yuki, will be the last," he says.

Author's Note: Phew. Nice to know it took a dying animal to make Nana FINALLY stop denying her feelings. All kidding aside, I always thought of her as the girl who hated Rito the most; therefore, I needed something big, like really big, for her to turn a new leaf. Now, I have some news; next chapter was originally supposed to be for Best Girl (at least, my pick for Best Girl). But since we're reaching the conclusion of this [great] story, I've decided the next chapter will be a filler chapter, similar to the "Girl Talk" chapter. It's a chance to give the plot time to breathe before it builds to the grand finale, and to give readers time to reflect on how far Rito has come before diving into the epic conclusion, which includes him completing his harem, and fighting his fated final battle with Stem. Stay tuned, because the next chapter's gonna be a little steamier than most, albeit PG-13 for the most part.
