Chapter 3, A new face
Everest laughs as she sees the spotted Dalmatian run up the mountain towards her. As Marshall reaches the top where Everest is, he is still out of breath.
'Long run?' Everest asked jokingly.
'You *sigh* could say that *sigh*.' Marshall answers, still catching his breath.
'You said you wanted to show me something?' Everest asked, curious about what Marshall wanted to show her.
'Yeah, oh boy, that means we have to down the mountain again.' Marshall realised.
Everest laughed. 'I'm up for it, lead the way.'
Marshall and Everest went back down the mountain, instead of walking towards town, Marshall went left, right from the lookout. The two pups walk beside the road that doesn't get used these days, the road leads to a town called smoke town, a town both citizens of adventure bay and barkingburg stay away from. It used to be part of barking burg, but eventually got taken by a person who only cared about making money. He turned the growing city into a wasteland that is filled with factories, it's only citizens being criminals as no laws are set up in the town.
'Why are we here, you know smoke town is no place to be.' Everest asked, wondering what Marshall was thinking.'
'That's not where we are going.' Marshall answered straight forward.
'Where else does this road lead to?' Everest asked.
'Here.' Marshall answered.
Marshall pointed at a cave. The cliffs beside the road were very high and looked quite creepy at times. It had many caves inside it, with the two pups entering one of them.
'This should be the right one.' Marshall thought out loud.
'What is this place?' Everest asked.
'This is where I lived just before I met Chase and Ryder.' Marshall said.
Everest looked around. Suddenly she recognised little drawing, carved into the stone.
'You made those?' Everest asked.
'Yes.' Marshall answered.
Everest looked closer at the drawings. It showed Marshall as a firefighter with the text "the dream" beside it.
'Your passion for firefighting came before joining the paw patrol?' Everest asked.
'Yes, since I saw the first firebrick I was obsessed, the other dog that lived with my owner, Winston, showed me a lot about it, I was planning on joining the local firefighters.' Marshall said.
'What happened?' Everest asked.
'They said they didn't use dogs anymore as to many died.' Marshall said. 'I wanted to prove them wrong but I didn't get the chance.'
'What did you do after?' Everest asked.
'Winston still believed in me, I knew dogs in firefighting wasn't banned everywhere, so I went searching. I left my family to find my passion, I ended up in those cave, and not much later, I met Chase and Ryder.' Marshall said. 'I count myself pretty lucky.'
'I can imagine.' Everest said. 'Don't you miss your family sometimes?' Everest asked.
'I promised Winston I'd come back one day, we will see when that happens. I don't know if he knows where I've ended up.' Marshall said.
'You haven't talked to them since you left?' Everest asked.
'Couldn't.' Marshall said.
Marshall looked to the corner of the cave, an unfamiliar dog bed laid on the cave floor. "Someone lived here" Marshall realised.
'Maybe we should go, someone lived here, maybe they still do.' Marshall said.
The pups turned their heads to the exit but froze as a shadow of a dog stood at the exit of the cave. The dog stared at the pups for a few seconds, before speaking up.
'I guess you've found my good old place.' The dog said. The dog didn't sound like an adult dog, but like a puppy, clearly female. Marshall and Everest couldn't see any details about the dog because of the lighting.
'Im sorry if we entered your cave, we just came to see some stuff I did here when I lived here.' Marshall said.
'Don't worry, your free to be here, I came for you two actually.' The pup said, she walked deeper into the cave, showing herself to be an Australian shepherd. 'I'm Tessa.'
'I'm Everest, that's Marshall.' Everest explained.
'Oh I know who you two are, but I'm not here for the amazing work that you both do, which by the way, you guys do great.'
'What are you here for than?' Everest asked, confused about the mysterious pup.
'You two were at this location last month right?' Tessa asked, showing a picture of the location of the strange symbol, tho that symbol is not visible on this picture.
'The place of the symbol, why is the symbol not on the picture?' Marshall asked.
'Because normal dogs can't see it.' Tessa said. 'It's quite hard to explain, but the best way is to show you guys my place, interested to join me?'
Marshall and Everest looked at each other. Everest clearly didn't like the idea, but the curious puppy that Marshall is, he wanted to know what the puppy knew that clearly, he and Everest didn't know.
'Im up.' Marshall said.
Everest looked confused, but didn't want her friend to go with the pup himself, so she agreed to go as well.
Marshall and Everest followed the Australian shepherd, the pup stepped into another cave not far from the previous one. Marshall and Everest stood an the entrance, Everest scanning the place, Marshall just looking at what the shepherd was doing. Everest noticed that the floor was made of metal, something was off.
'Don't be afraid to come in, I don't bite, nor do the other dogs, Roger is all bark no bite.' Tessa said.
'Other dogs? I don't know what you are seeing but I don't see any other dogs.' Everest reacted a bit angered, she didn't trust the pup.
'Have patience.' The pup reacted.
Everest looked at Marshall, wondering why he was so calm with the situation. Marshall saw the way of acting the pup used in himself, so he trusted the pup. Marshall entered the cave, he looked at Tessa, who seemed to be searching the walls. Then she pushed back one of the rocks, and two huge rocks at the other side of the cave suddenly moved aside, showing a huge control panel.
'What is that?' Everest asked, wanting to tell Marshall to leave the cave and leave, but holding herself.
'Het away from the middle of the cave.' The pup ordered Marshall, who did as she told.
Suddenly, part of the metal floor, moved to the side, and a glass elevator came up.
'Of you guys dare to, because I understand this is a weird situation, but I'd love to explain what you guys saw there, so please join me.' The pup said, looking kinda desperate.
'I want to know.' Marshall said, looking at Everest. Everest looked at the pup, she still didn't trust the pup, but she was also a little bit curious about what the pup knew, so the pups joined Tessa in the elevator.
Tessa pushed a button and the elevator started moving downwards, Marshall and Everest dropped their jaws as they saw what was hidden under that humble, maybe a little weird looking cave.
