Chapter 32: The Bonfire
.
Sai couldn't take his eyes off of Ino's sleeping face. Her name had once been synonymous with beauty as he remembered how she had blushed one day, her cheeks an angry bright pink when he had invited her to his home to show her his art collection. Their distance bridged closer with each of her visits after he had finally convinced her to become his muse. Yet all of that eventually eclipsed as she methodically wanted more. More emotions, more passion, more commitment, and more time.
Every demand was amplified.
He sank to the floor, his back leaning against the coffin. His residual worry was that Ino was too close to his group of acquaintances and friends. He'll be on the list of suspects, one of the first ones they'll turn to the moment she's considered missing, as Sai had indulged in something he could only describe as a tangible friendship between the opposite sex.
"They wasted their time on me, Danzo-sama," He whispered, perceiving the irony. With Danzo, Sai had been a puppet, with no real goals or aspirations of his own. His body and mind were only but a vessel and weapon. But all that began to change when he grew into his role as the fourth member of team 7. He was encouraged to have dreams and aspirations of his own, not knowing if he would become something far more unhinged. Yet all of Sakura's teaching, Naruto's influence, Kakashi's praises, and the human connections he had formed had not completely changed him. However, they believed him to be a living proof role model of a successful deprogramming, choosing to ignore the effects of Danzo's dehumanizing experimentation it had on him. It still lingered.
After snapping out of his thoughts, he reminded himself there were things he could do. The longer he spent overthinking actions he could not take back, the more likely the scouts would find her, should they be deployed. Sai toyed with an idea. He could obscure everything, including the timeline of Ino's disappearance, just to buy him time to decide whether he would end her, or break her. After all, Danzo had taught him a few techniques to break the human mind.
Sai pushed himself off the floor and grabbed his jacket and walked out the door, leaving a clone behind. His art clone would be unreliable for such an endeavor. He had to do this himself.
He stood on the rooftop and leaped, transforming in midair into Ino's doppelgänger.
.
Sai spent hour after hour just laying in Ino's bed, waiting, possibly gambling his time away. Feigning to look sick wasn't a problem at all, but his simple plan could fall apart should anyone were to catch on to something being off.
Sai turned to the movement coming from the window. The Anbu's presence was very much anticipated. They entered the room through a window.
"What's going on with you? The Hokage has been waiting for over 30 minutes," The Anbu said.
"Can't you see I'm not feeling well?" Sai replied.
"Why didn't you send word?"
"How? I can barely move a muscle,"
"Alright, I'll let him know to deploy Sakura-san to help heal you right away,"
"No need, I already took a lot of medications," Sai pointed to the assortment of medicinal bottles by her nightstand. "Or do you think a retired doctor can't take care of herself?"
"Right," The Anbu replied while scanning her entire room, before looking back at her. "Feel better, Yamanaka-san. I'll let your family, and friends know how you're doing," Their response gave Sai the feeling whoever was behind the mask was one of Ino's family members.
.
Hinata exited the Nara mansion, her eyes slightly cast downward as she took a step past the gates, following two steps behind Shikamaru. They had a busy day ahead of them, their focus on damage control.
Even so, the weather was the most agreeable it had ever been since winter had started, as it pushed the high sixties. The sun's ray was strong enough to warren sun protection. Hinata held a parasol, aimed towards the sky, the pattern spinning as she walked to their destination, with their first stop being her home.
She looked up at the sky for a moment, before they entered her Family's state.
"To think I could simply organize freedom, how Hyuga of me." She murmured under her breath as she stopped spinning the handle of her parasol to close it.
They sat down with her father, with her mostly listening in as Shikamaru discussed the outline of tonight's meeting, which aimed to contain any possible social unrest.
"You have my gratitude for convincing my daughter to disperse those rumors," Hinata heard her father say, as she kept her eyes on her hands, appearing convincingly docile as she battled whether she wanted to say something or not.
Hiashi's gaze then turned to her daughter.
"Now, why in the world did you mean to incite a social war?"
"Should I apologize for merely living through your philosophies, father?"
He sighed. "I have placed a lot of faith in you many times before. And I believe it's your turn to have the same amount of faith in the future. Let's wait and see what my future grandkids come up with as the solution. Sometimes it is okay to leave everything in the capable hands of the unknown," Hiashi replied.
Hinata raised her gaze and glanced over at her father.
Shikamaru appeared to be having a similar revelation. He had found it strange at first that Hiashi would agree to their firstborn to become the heir of the Hyuga clan. Just like his mother wanted the Byuakugan, it seemed that his father desired a Nara's intellect.
A sigh escaped her, her thoughts becoming words against her will.
"I see. You've been thinking about their freedom all along,"
Shikamaru glanced over. "Isn't everyone?"
She rose to her feet. She needed some air.
"Daughter, I need you to hear my request," Her father's words stopped her. She slowly lowered herself back down and nodded. "Even if tonight goes well, it doesn't mean much if Lord Kakashi is not there,"
"You want me to invite him?"
"Yeah. It will show mutual agreement and understanding,"
"Alright, I'll do it,"
"I'm also going to present the new elders at this meeting-"
She seemed ready to turn down that idea, however, Shikamaru's firm nod immediately neutralized her.
"We know Lord Hokage will be around, ruling, for some time. If we don't play nice, he might deny our children educational resources outside our clan's teaching," Which they will need, given that they would be raising heirs two heirs.
Hinata nodded in understanding. However, unlike them, she had decided to bet on Naruto taking over power sooner than later, given the nature of last night's conversation.
"You make a logical point I can't dispute," Hinata replied. "I'm going for some fresh air,"
Yami had just returned home after accompanying Hanabi around the village. Her younger sister rushed past her, holding in her arm what appeared to be a fainted messenger bird.
"Hanabi-chan, who does it belong to?" Hinata asked.
'We don't know. Sasuke-kun found it fainted on the streets, close to the Hokage's tower, from lack of chakra of all things. He asked me if I could look after it in the meantime. Let's catch up later before you go, okay?'
Hinata nodded and watched Hanabi disappear up the stairs, presuming towards her room to administer healing.
Yami paused next to her and greeted her.
"I didn't expect you would come back home,"
"Let's take a walk, Yami-san,"
They strolled together by the garden, which was filled with all kinds of seasonal flowers in full bloom, from tulips to daffodils and hyacinths.
Hinata sighed as she walked next to Yami.
"You're oddly calm about everything, considering Ino-san is scheduled to probe you," Quite frankly, she doesn't know how she wanted him to handle that.
Yami chuckled. "Is it not humiliating a person who is second in command of my clan's army, is being treated as a low-second-class citizen? Had I belonged to the main house, this would've never been an issue,"
It must be upsetting indeed, Hinata agreed inwardly. "So you mean to make a scene?"
He nodded, as the social injustice was blatant. It wasn't just the Main branch mistreating him, it was also the world.
"I would've done so, but Yamanaka-san is out sick with the bad flu. Once Yamanaka-san gets better, I will not be holding back my opinion on the matter. Now, what did you want to talk about?" Yami turned to face her as they both paused. And from far away, both Shikamaru and Hiashi could be seen walking along the corridor. Her fiancé paused and look her way.
Hinata seemed to get nervous, from the way her explanation was rushed and short. Yami said nothing, as he wasn't surprised to hear the change of plans. Although he understood the reasoning, something inside him felt like it was boiling. It seemed he had mistaken her from the beginning, as he had overestimated her resolve.
Does Hinata-sama even care about us? It was a thought that surfaced, giving rise to doubts about how serious she was of their plights.
"Yami-san, will I see you there tonight with everyone?"
"Yes, we'll be there."
"Hmm, what business did you have with Yami-san?" Hiashi asked when she rejoined them.
Hinata clasped her hand and smiled sweetly. "I invited him to the festival to help keep watch,"
.
While on their way to their next destination, Hinata asked Shikamaru if he knew that Ino was feeling unwell.
"We may need to cancel our floral arrangement, that way she can rest,"
"I doubt you'll need to, her aunt can take care of the order," Still, Shikamaru frowned. No one really gets seriously sick. Was she okay?
When they entered the Inuzuka clan, members were seen working diligently around their crops, having their dog companion fetching things as needed. Tsume greeted them close by, and they followed past their open-field agriculture system, which was acres, and acres wide.
The parasol spun in her hand, as they headed up a slope of a mountain. Tsume brought them to the largest open clearing, which was perhaps bigger than the stadium where the Chunin exams were hosted.
Several Inuzuka men were in the middle of building the blueprint of the bonfire, chopping trees from a forest nearby to help set up for the night's display of fire festivities. Tsume took them higher, and the three of them glanced down at the half-finished structure. The men had built two layers so far, aiming to build the third. The outer layer was shaped like a star. The inception was a pentagram made from logs and sticks. The tower had fireworks attached to every other angle, and Tsume explained they'll fill it up with hay towards the end.
Hinata imagined how beautiful it would look at night. Still, her eyes darkened.
"How should I even go about tonight? Everyone is expecting a powerful speech to drum their hearts into battle,"
"It's easy to forget things as long as there is entertainment," Shikamaru admitted.
"I have not known a Hokage that's so involved with our clan business," Hinata said.
"Well, you know where he's coming from. He was there for the aftermath of the worst decision made by the village, the Uchiha massacre. If I were in his position, I would probably be worried too," Shikamaru said in Kakashi's defense.
Memories she repressed tightly leaked into her consciousness. No wonder Sasuke had been mad at her back then. She had been following his father's footsteps, hadn't she? The sneaking around, the plotting, the rebellion. Of course, he would be mad.
"Wouldn't it be best if I skip this one out and stay away? I'm still healing," She motioned to the wound on her.
"Hinata, please don't let me witness you being such a baby, it's unsightly," Tsume said while glaring. "Not showing up at all would only bring about questions. Why not show up late instead? By the time you arrive, everyone would've had something to drink. And there'll be music too, hence distraction. I'll make sure to give them the full experience during your absence,"
"And have you already placed the orders for the masks?" It was known that Hyugas in general opted to wear masks during festivals so that others can't read their lips.
"Mhm, it'll be arriving soon,"
"Thanks, Tsume. You're always very accommodating," Despite the rumors, Tsume was a very good hostess.
"By the way, you're not planning to wear a Kimono to our festival, right?" Tsume asked as she looked her up and down.
"Yes? Is something wrong with that?"
Tsume pointed to the impressive structure.
"It's going to be our biggest fire up to date. Not to mention, there are going to be smaller bonfires all around. You could say we're going to make it summer tonight. Make sure to pass down the message,"
Hinata turned to her fiancé. "Then I have more errands to run after we visit Choji-kun. I don't exactly own anything that's considered light, aside from my uniform,"
.
After they exited Choji's home, Shikamaru kissed Hinata on the cheek.
"You're not coming?" Hinata asked.
"Yeah, I'll see you at home," There was nothing to worry about, granted there was Anbu following her every move. Even if they weren't there to protect her, she should be safe.
Whether paranoid or not, Hinata went about her trip, accepting the possibility she might be followed. She stopped by a Yamanaka seamstress, whom Ino always boasted about getting her custom clothes made. When Hinata entered inside, there were several mannequins dressed in different kinds of two-piece clothing similar to those Ino preferred to wear.
The seamstress greeted her, immediately recognizing who she was, as Hinata had been dubbed the most beautiful future bride.
"Hyuga-sama, welcome, did Ino-chan recommend you to my place?"
"I always admired all the custom pieces you made for Ino-chan,"
Hinata continued to walk around, her eyes landing on a modest two-piece suit that covered the neck and arms.
"Oh yeah, I forgot. I bet you weren't allowed to wear something that shows too much skin. Would you like to have a look at my latest design? I think it'll suit you since it screams freedom," Hinata snapped her head her way. "Not to be rude, but everyone knows about what the Lord Hokage tried to cover up last night, and about the freedom movement that's happening tonight,"
"You must've been misinformed. Nothing of that nature is happening tonight. It's just a bonfire festival to clear such misunderstandings. I'm all about love and peace,"
"You escaped and survived several assassinations attempted by your clan, yet you're so forgiving,"
"Um, may I see your latest design?" Hinata deflected.
"Of course, right this way. I have something that will suit your new status as the first Hyuga that managed to escape her clan,"
She followed the seamstress, who led her to a mannequin wearing a white two-piece. The top had adjustable straps and a lace-up back. The high-waisted white skirt had a side slit that reached a little past her thigh.
"This is too much," Hinata commented, as she ran her index finger through the slit as if to make a point. "The slit is too high,"
"It's made for easy access to a weapon holster, but it can be adjusted,"
"I rather no one sees that I'm armed,"
"Then I'll remove it from the design,"
"I'm also going to need a new cloak. Something custom, with the Nara design," Hinata said while looking down at the one that displayed her family crest. Hinata left the seamstress after giving her measurements and arranged for her order to be delivered that night.
.
Hinata stepped outside and opened her parasol as she walked past other individuals, merging into the crowd. She glanced up from underneath the parasol, and although she did not notice any shadows or silhouette of Anbus shadowing her, it was safe to act as though that were so.
She walked into a café, quickly reemerging outside, under a guise, successfully losing anyone who might've been tailing her. Though she wasn't sure if anyone ever was.
Hinata took a deep breath as she stood outside Sai's place, not knowing how any of it was going to go.
She landed on the rooftop, letting herself inside. She descended the stairs, stopping on the 4th floor, quickly finding the apartment number she knew belonged to Sai.
The stranger that knocked pushed past him and let themselves in. Sai reached into his weapon holster, ready to engage in combat.
Hinata dropped her disguise, lowering her hood to turn to him. She took in his physical state and had to ask herself if that was paint or blood on his clothes.
She slowly tiptoed and reached out, smearing the liquid on his cheek as she wiped a sample, bringing it close to her nose, and sniffing it. Paint. The sigh she heaved earned a chuckle from Sai as he caught on to what she might've believed, for she wasn't far off from the truth.
"Do you always look like you just massacred an entire clan?"
"I tend to get my hands dirty when I paint," Sai slowly brought his hand to his cheek, feeling where she had touched.
Hinata didn't pay him any mind, and pulled out a handkerchief, and wiped the paint off her finger. She walked further in to explore his home.
"It's not safe to reach you through messages," Sai heard her say as he had already settled back into his stool, sitting in front of his work.
It was the first time she was seeing him in his element, surrounded by his hobbies.
The place was spacious, to say the least, yet still managed to feel cluttered, even while organized. Maybe it was because the room was filled with so much color. The windows were draped with see-through curtains, coordinated in a rainbow assortment. A large palm tree that had overgrown its pot sat tall, in its corner. Desks and shelves were littered with different tools.
She paused behind his shoulder, the abstract painting he was working on was splattered with a warm color palette of red. It matched the mess of paint splattered on his black overall.
He didn't find it rude to question the motive of her visit.
"I don't suppose you're here to admire my art," Sai said, but she didn't stop her exploration, choosing to head towards his kitchen table which had been the only thing untouched by his hobby as it had a fruit basket resting in the middle.
She sat down behind the table, his back was facing her.
"It's about tonight," She began, completely catching his undivided attention. "The movement has been hijacked. The Lord Hokage was invited,"
How did she get backed into a corner? He thought he had taken care of Ino for the time being. Sai moved past her, standing behind her as he rinsed his paint-stained hands in the sink. He dried his hands and leaned against the kitchen counter with his arms crossed.
"What are you getting at?"
"I can't make a move until Lord Kakashi retires," She explained, hoping he'll understand where the conversation was headed.
"Since when are you afraid of Lord Kakashi?" He said, completely demystified for a moment.
She didn't say anything, reaching for an apple from the fruit basket to toss it to him.
He stared at the apple in his hand. It seems her ladyship had gotten used to him sampling everything before her consumption. He took a bite of the apple, having the dubious honor, before reaching for a knife, peeling it, and cutting it. After presenting it to her on a small, cute plate, he momentarily felt puzzled at himself as to why he had indulged her such privilege outside the mission. Sai didn't think any further of it, maybe for once, he was just a good host. He filled up a glass of water, taking a sip, before breaking the silence.
"Alright, say you're not afraid, then what is it?" Sai pressed while handing her the glass of water he had just tested.
"The stories you told me about your Nii-san, are they true?"
"We were not related by blood. But our bond was real nevertheless,"
"Then it should be easy for you to understand that I'm trying to protect the bonds I have,"
He cocked his head and met her watchful eyes, understanding her hesitation must stem from fear of losing something or perhaps someone, and not because she was looking out for him.
Still, he had a lot of opinions on that matter. For instance, he found it strange that a person as powerful as her would verbally commit herself to someone, knowing she was about to subject herself to misery. But how long could she keep up the selfless act? In a way, he was reminded of Ino just then. He looked away.
"I supposed you're allowed to change your mind if it's not within your benefit to act," Sai said, emotionlessly. Still, he joined her side, taking the chair and picking from the same fruit platter.
"I'm protecting you too," She said while pointing to him with the edge of a peeled apple in her hand.
Sai begged to differ, feeling like he had been the one who had protected her. For Kami's sake, a drugged and unconscious body was in his closet, as he weighed the pros and cons of his next decision. Speaking of which, it was almost time for another dose to keep Ino unconscious, wasn't it?
"And I'm to believe you suddenly care about my wellbeing," He remarked, dryly.
"There's too much we could lose if I make a move,"
Sai ignored the emphasis she placed on them, and glanced at his watch, looking away from her calculative gaze.
He couldn't tell her about what he had done when it was obvious no praise would be coming from her. At least not now, under such circumstances. It was truly frustrating that she wanted to suddenly flip a switch and be a good girl for Nara, while he's stuck on deciding whether he would kill for his muse again.
"I have a solution to your problem," Sai began, circling back to the subject of bonds, no longer able to hold his opinion back. "Just don't marry him. Nara-san will never accept the real you, even though you're perfect,"
If Naruto hadn't hauled her out of the depth of her eccentricity, she might've just agreed with that statement. However, she was everything but perfect, having caused a surmountable amount of damage; as the consequence of her actions.
Still, hearing that from someone like Sai made it all the less flattering. Hinata hummed in displeasure, as she rested one elbow on the table and leaned her cheek against her closed fist, almost pouty.
Sai tried one more time, and when he didn't smile or attempted any emotions, it was when he looked the most genuine.
"Hime-sama, if you can't make a move, then delegate your wishes," He was unfazed by her silence. "Yami-san is on Lord Kakashi's watch list, while I on the other hand am free of any involvement. Give me an assignment and I will execute it flawlessly and paint it red, all in the name of freedom,"
Just then, as she thought of his answer, it made her feel anxiety, the foreboding kind, as her heart began to race. Technically, here it was, an opportunity to not break any promises to any loved ones, as she had no agency over Sai's actions.
Sai didn't remember how her knife came to be in her hand, as she stood up and paced about, her manicured nails playing with the blade in her hand.
She needed to stop…the scheming, the plotting… Feeling frustrated with herself, Hinata shook her head as she caught herself about to follow through with a familiar pattern she tended to follow, which up until now had been her vice.
It would be thoughtless of her to ever leave Sai in charge. He had no real moral compass and was the kind of person that liked to do things just to see how others would react, for the sake of recording it through art. Hence, she needed him to stay put. It was safer this way for everyone involved, including herself.
"When the majority of people in my life tell me that I'm in the wrong, and imply that there are things I should work on-"
"-Sounds to me like you should believe in yourself a little more-"
"-Something has to change-"
"-Change doesn't happen overnight."
"I like to believe it does if it's coming from my truest desire,"
"And what if others continue to perceive you the same?"
"They'll wait and expect it, for me to do something again. But with enough time, they'll forget. Perhaps even I'll forget, and the change will be permanent," She gave him a thoughtful look. He seemed distracted as he curiously glanced at his watch once more. She could no longer keep quiet about his behavior. "Why do you keep looking at your watch?"
"My apologies for having to cut this visit short," Sai pushed himself off the chair and started to walk towards the door, opening it for her. "I can't miss my next appointment. My client will be here soon,"
"No apologies necessary, I did come by unexpected. If by any chance you end up sneaking inside the meeting under a disguise, all I'm asking of you is to behave, okay?" She tossed her hoodie back up, reverting to her civilian disguise.
"Hime-sama," She paused outside and tossed him a look. If a perfect being like her is having doubts and questioning herself…then what about him? Does something need to change? "Does that mean there is something about me that I should change?"
"We don't have that kind of friendship for you to even ask me that. But tell me, how are things with Ino-chan? She seemed pretty upset with you when she was at my home last night,"
"Are you two close?" Sai asked, blinking. Then he remembered, by home, she meant the Nara clan. Meaning, Ino had been visiting Shikamaru. He only hoped she hadn't said anything weird last night.
"We're not. But I'm hoping she'll let me in her life,"
"Why?"
"Do you know that she's feeling unwell right now? You should visit her,"
"I'll visit her after her quarantine is over. Her flu might be contagious,"
Hinata smiled sadly. "Has she said anything to you?"
"About what?" She didn't have the heart to tell him that Ino was meaning to break up with him.
"I think she's doing this, pretending to be sick, so that she won't attend my wedding. If you see her, please convince her to get better,"
"See you tonight, Hime-sama,"
He let out an inaudible sigh after she left, and closed the door.
Sai quickly prepared another dosage of a sleeping drug and entered his room, slowly opening the coffin where he had Ino tied up for extra measure.
Something was off. The drug he administered was supposed to wear off by now. Why wasn't Ino awake yet?
Sai put down the syringe and forced Ino's eyes open, noticing something. Although she was awake, her body was nothing but an empty shell, as Ino's consciousness was not present, and tried to think back. The only living thing in the room aside from him was his messenger bird. And now that he thought about it, he hasn't seen his messenger bird around for a while.
"She got away," He found himself murmuring a profanity. Ino must've projected her mind away while he wasn't looking. If she managed to transfer her mind to another living thing, he couldn't say for sure if she was still in the body of his messenger bird. He had to find Ino's consciousness before she attempts to make contact with anyone or the Hokage.
.
When night came, members from different clans were seen arriving in groups at a time, cloaked in white robes and matching clothes, some, not knowing what to expect from a festival being hosted by the Inuzuka clan. They stood around, waiting to be guided towards their destination while music and drums were played at a distance, up the mountain.
Several Inuzuka women greeted several parties while distributing masks that were shaped in the likeness of Kurama, Naruto's companion, a symbol of hope.
Most ladies were dressed light for the occasion, in a two-piece long-sleeve shirt and flowy skirt, while the men opted for a plain white shirt and comfy pants. They turned to one another, inspecting each other's masks, seemingly excited about tonight, and all the thought-provoking conversations they could have.
Even though they were nowhere near fire just yet, they felt like they had no need for their cloaks, thus some opted to leave the cloaks behind.
The excitement for the anticipated bonfire only grew more with the sound of the music being played far off in the background. Among the attendees was Hanabi, who slipped in among the branch group.
"Alright, I think most of us are here, and my mother is glad you could all make it. Everyone, follow me!" Kiba said, while standing next to Shino, both dressed light for the occasion.
When they started walking, parallel symmetrical torches lit up in unison, guiding their path up the mountains. The beating of their hearts began to match the drums and instruments as they made it to the festival site.
Hiding among the crowd of Hyugans was Sai under a disguise. The mask hid his frown as he counted too many Anbus stationed about the premise. He reasoned that if he were Ino, he'll make contact with the Hokage. This night wasn't going to be fun.
The music picked up, drums going harder as the Inuzuka's clan leader arrived riding a mount. Stationed behind her was a podium filled with political figures and clan leaders.
The indistinguishable color of cherry blossom hair could not be entirely hidden under the cloak.
Sakura seemed to turn to Yoshino, to ask where Shikamaru and Hinata were, as Tsume began addressing the crowd of hundreds.
"Everyone, welcome-"
"Where is Hinata-sama?" Some yelled from the crowd.
"Hinata-sama seems to be running a little late," Tsume said, projecting her voice loudly. People in the crowd turned to one another, whispering speculations while shaking their heads. "In the meantime, If you look around, you'll find several booths stationed around the peripheral for food and drinks. Feel free to eat and drink to your heart's content. Don't mind the presence of Lord Hiashi, and Lord Hokage, as it was Hinata-sama's request that they are here. We also have the wonderful Haruno-san on standby should anyone need healing. Our awesome future Hokage is here to celebrate. And as for Uchiha-san," Tsume turned to the podium and nodded towards the Hokage.
Kakashi stepped forward and nodded toward Sasuke.
"A few applicants which I considered for the title of Advisor came forward, but only one has caught the interest of Lord Hiashi," Kakashi said, knowing he was embellishing his statement because the truth was, he always wanted Sasuke on his team. Team 7. His team. "Which is why I am extending this offer to Sasuke Uchiha," Sasuke walked forward and stood next to Kakashi. "Do you promise to do all you can, to prevent any war, whether internal or external, from happening? Do you accept the burden of maintaining peace so that no social unrest happens?" He caught Shibi Aburame, next to Shino, somewhere in the crowd.
"I accept the honor, however unpleasant my role may be at times,"
Kakashi nodded towards Hiashi who stepped forward.
"I will also like to take the chance to introduce the new seven elders," Hiashi motioned to seven individuals who nodded to the crowd. "Our darkest times are close to passing now that I have a support system in place again-"
During Hiashi's introduction, a Hyuga with jet-black hair stepped to the front and turned to the crowd.
"Everyone, wake up! They're lying to you! I bet you they're keeping her away from us!" He screamed at the top of his lungs. He then turned to Lord Hiashi and pointed at him. "Tell me, where is Hinata-sama! I did not come here tonight for some mindless distraction! I came here to know about what's in store in our future! I came here to be told about our freedom! To fight for it!"
Everyone sensed the shift the moment several Anbus surrounded him with knives to his throat, making the message clear as to what behavior wasn't allowed.
Sai swallowed in the midst of things. Maybe he had taken his fun a little too far. Luckily, a young woman with brown chocolate hair pushed past the crowd and came up to the group of Anbu displaying violence. Hanabi removed her mask and looked toward her dad's and Kakashi's way.
'Let him go,' She signed to Kakashi, while her lips moved.
Sasuke looked away, ready to translate, but Kakashi understood what was being said.
The Anbus glanced at Kakashi, and their leader nodded his head, giving the go-ahead. They immediately let go, shoving the Hyuga forward, causing him to tumble to the ground, in front of Hanabi's feet.
The Hyuga had remained on the ground, grunting slightly before slowly coming up to one knee in front of her.
"Hanabi-sama…what is all of this?" He feigned ignorance. "We were invited to a freedom rally and not some festival-"
Hanabi sighed inwardly, being well aware of the rumors. She turned to the hundreds of branch members that clustered together around the bonfires. They all glanced her way.
'Everyone, I wish to clear something up. Someone has been using my sister's name to entice malice and plan violence. She has never wished for war and stands for peace. I know you're angry, and I am too. But we will fight for our freedom, just as my dear sister has, using only our words. We can accomplish a lot without violence, just like our hero, Naruto-kun! He has saved us many times before, from people like Pein, with just his words! Should you have any questions about our future, please just ask us. You're not alone, we're right here!'
Tsume frowned, for the crowd seemed a little tense. She decided to speed up the schedule. "Now, let us begin our traditional event. The first 14 virgin souls that are pushed to the front will get chosen to light up the main fire," She turned to a group of her clansmen, "Boys, go hand out the torches and bring them back with you,"
Kiba stepped toward Hanabi and held out an unlit torch. Although they had originally rehearsed for the torch to go to Hinata, for some reason, she was late.
It had become a game, as some clan members giggled and laughed, as they pushed someone they knew forward, not entirely knowing whether the person was really a virgin or not. The 14 souls that were sacrificed for the sake of entertainment were given a torch, then picked up and placed on the broad shoulders of a strong Inuzuka before being carried off to the closest bonfire.
"Now go! Release!" Tsume yelled, watching her son lift Hanabi on his shoulder, as she carried an unlit torch. The chosen ones were carried off to the main bonfire that had yet to be lit up.
"Sasuke," Kakashi said next to him, as the parade happened. "Light it up,"
Sasuke stole from the scattered fires and helped light up everyone's torches.
Hanabi leaned the torch further away from her body, her hands trembling slightly, as the only thing stopping her from falling were the hands of the person carrying her. She watched everyone lean into the bonfire structure. Mimicking what everyone around her was doing she extended the torch to the structure, and pulled away quickly, watching the flames quickly burn 6 to 7 stories high, their surrounding suddenly changing to a warm glow.
Onlookers stood around, watching in wonder as fireworks went off.
When the fireworks subsided, the music picked up again as their heiress got carried next to the small group, as they were taken around the big bonfire.
Towards the end of the round, Inuzukas joined in, creating a form that went around the fire as they skipped to the rhythm of the drums.
People were divided by then, the groups getting smaller and smaller as different clans hung about, while drinking and laughing while standing in the proximity of a bonfire, while the main one was crowded with activities and dancing.
Members of the Aburames clan, along with the branch, slowly joined around the large bonfire after some alcohol unlocked their freedom.
"Naruto-nii! Sakura-chan! Let's join in!" Konohamaru said as he tried to drag them away to the fire. Naruto and Sakura gave in, just as Kiba and Hanabi had made their way up the podium.
"I hate to be the guy to say this, but fun can wait until later," Kiba said to Konohamaru, his tone growing serious. "Konohamaru-"
"What did I do now? I haven't pulled a prank in a while," Konohamaru defensively rebuffed. "It was probably Naruto that did it,"
Naruto hit him in the back of the head for even saying that. "Do I look like I have time for that anymore?"
"But you have time for vacation," Konohamaru murmured resentfully.
"Oi!" Naruto glared.
They didn't notice Shino and his father walking up to the podium.
Shibi looked around, almost every clan leaders, heirs, and heiresses were present, a feat that doesn't happen often. To top it off, a new advisor and elders have been appointed.
"The next annual clan meeting is going to be upon us soon, yet the village's future is slacking,"
"I believe what my dad is trying to say is we should all be focusing on the next clan meeting, and what that is going to look like,"
Just then, the instruments slowed down, until the music stopped, almost silencing in nature. Tsume held up a Suzu bell, ringing it once, the sound reverberating gently in everyone's ears.
Sasuke turned away from the conversation. It was like a piece of the night sky broke apart to cloak her tresses, which gave the appearance of being weightless as she walked.
Hinata seemed to have spotted Hanabi, lifting her hand to wave at her. Joined at her hand was Shikamaru, who led the way, his white shirt with several buttons undone, as if attempting to look as laid back as possible or could that perhaps have been her doing? And somehow, all it took was one look at her blushed cheeks, and Sai momentarily forgot all about her adventurous and sometimes risqué nature, as her lavender eyes seemed so full of wonder. She had no business smiling in such a timid way, disarming all the same. She looked nothing like his muse, who was this doll or imposter that almost sent shivers down his spine.
Naruto skipped down the steps and jogged up to them.
"We got problems here. I think Shibi-san has some weird agenda for tonight," Naruto said. "He's saying he wants to do a pre-mockup discussion before the annual clan meeting comes to pass,"
Shikamaru shook his head as he had deemed this scenario to be unavoidable.
"Troublesome, where is Choji?" He let go of her hand and joined Naruto's side as they walked away.
"I don't know, he was with us a few seconds ago,"
"Let's go and collect him before he goes into a food coma," Shikamaru tossed her a look over his shoulder and paused, half-turned, "Hinata, we'll do our best to get the situation under control,"
He's trying to keep me away, Hinata mused, not faulting him. The less she's involved, the better. Kiba and Shino greeted her as she made her way to the podium.
"Sorry we were late,"
"Blink twice if he was holding you hostage," Kiba said to her, even though she had a mask.
"Not funny Kiba. I heard about the plans for tonight. Just know it's not going to gain you any favors from me. I already let my wish for peace be known,"
"Who said it isn't going to be peaceful? Hey, we're your best friends. Let us try this our way, okay? Just don't say thanks until we walk away with victory tonight. We'll drive your father and the Elders into a corner with our demands,"
Hinata held back a smile as she walked up to the podium, She looked around, noticing something about the branch members's disposition, so cheerful.
"I'm happy everyone is in such a great mood," Hinata said.
"It was all thanks to your sister. Whatever she said to the crowd helped chill everyone out. Seems like Hana-chan is an excellent diplomat," Kiba replied.
Hanabi touched her mask and removed it, 'Not true,'
"It is true, you're wonderful Hanabi-chan," Hinata replied, while hugging her.
Kakashi sighed, looking away from Hiashi. He kept his eyes on Hinata as she shook hands with all the seven elders, congratulating them for taking on the role.
"Well, she's finally here,"
Hinata glanced away from their conversation, towards the crowd that had suddenly gathered by the podium. She left the Elder's side and descended the steps once more.
"It's very refreshing to see my daughter is well-behaved," Hanabi heard her father say. She tilted her head his way.
"Only a father would call that well-behaved,"
They went back to observing her, in time to witness hundreds of souls joining in, kneeling around her. Her soft voice carried far enough as she spoke brief words of greetings, along with a short speech that resembled that of her Hanabi's, using all the key phrases that alluded to peace.
When her speech ended, Tsume signaled for the music to start back up. Behind her mask was a wide grin as she was amused that Hinata would have such a worrisome effect on Kakashi, as she was a person who could potentially mobilize the village against him.
Tsume turned to Yoshino. "Your son is a wonderful influence on her, by the way,"
"I'm more worried about Shibi," Yoshino replied.
"He has spoken on behalf of my wishes," Tsume replied. "What happened to Hinata last night, is unforgivable," Tsume replied.
"You don't think we've come prepared?" One of the new elders said. "You will only get 2 hours to express your solution. Because that's what we're all here for, right? Solutions,"
The voices and cheering got louder, as they chanted her sister's name.
Hinata's cloak parted as she spread her arms, which exposed her two-piece attire. Her small frame was lifted by the crowd around her, and she was carried around the fire. As they made their round, more people joined in and followed, the experience seemingly cathartic to them, for there she was, the brain behind the thesis, the woman who fights for freedom.
Hinata glanced over her shoulder as if checking to see if the new elders were watching.
"Look at your daughter. She's practically gloating, rubbing it in our faces that if she had wanted, this could've become a bloody bath, and you call that tamed? I call this a declaration or a threat," An Elder said.
"You're exaggerating and embellishing the gesture too much," Hiashi said nervously from his side.
"Then why don't you tell the new Hokage's advisor about his role?" Another elder countered.
"Hn?" Sasuke glanced their way at the mention of him.
Kakashi shook his head at Sasuke. "In essence, you need to remember this scene and what she's capable of," Sasuke had avoided looking her way, but did so when prompted. "You'll be task with working to prevent another..." Everything else that was said was lost to him.
He had to dismiss several thoughts as they came, which mostly leaned towards curiosity about the mechanism of those laces and how it was able to hold everything together. He tilted his head. It would be a crime to call that a shirt, as it was cropped, her back likely exposed, except for the few strings laced together. How could she put so much trust in that top?
On the other side of the fire, Naruto, Shikamaru, and Choji watched the rally as deafening screams chanted Hinata's name.
"Oi Shika, get her out of there, this is getting out of hand," Naruto said as he pointed to the spectacle. "This is not a cult fest,"
Shikamaru had to wonder if he had made a mistake by bringing her here only to have the new elders witness this. He left Naruto's and Choji's side, and could be seen swimming through the crowd just to get to her. She gave half-hearted waves at the crowd as she was pulled away from the formation and was taken back to the group of main political figures.
"Hinata-san, I guess you heard by now about what your allies are up to," An Elder said, just as Shikamaru had let go of her hand.
"And I'm also told I'm the only one to be excluded," How petty, that only clan leaders, heirs, and heiresses were the only ones allowed to be present. It was obvious they wanted her as far away from their discussion. Hinata looked around, and inwardly counted Tsume, Yoshino, Kiba, Shino, Shino's father, Hanabi, and Naruto will be on her side. Konohamaru might also choose her since he's close with Hanabi and Naruto.
She bit her inner lip. It's not enough. Kakashi, Sasuke, and Shikamaru would tip the votes in the Elder's favor.
She gripped her fist. She wanted Shikamaru to be on her side even if no one else was.
"Ladies, gentlemen, follow me this way," Tsume said and began to lead the way.
"I guess we'll be here, keeping each other company," Sakura said to Hinata, moving to stand next to her.
A thought occurred to Kakashi.
"Sasuke-kun, why don't you stay and take Hinata around the fire and entertain her, while we're off to the meeting," He suggested, with the intention of assigning him on watch duty, as the earlier commotion did not sit well with him. Hiashi nodded, as though his permission was needed.
"There's no need for that-" Sasuke cut in, stoically.
"That's very unnecessary," Shikamaru said over that.
She would rather not. Hinata turned to her father as if asking for help, but he mistook the interpretation.
"Shikamaru, I understand your relation to Sasuke-san is less than amicable. But your conflict has nothing to do with my daughter,"
Before the Elders could continue to look at Sasuke under any scrutiny, Naruto chuckled and patted Sasuke slowly on the shoulder.
"Don't do anything dumb, Advisor-kun," Naruto said, nearly speaking through his teeth as it was obvious he was hiding his hostility. He then smiled sweetly before walking past him. "Let's go Shikamaru,"
Shikamaru seemed to share Naruto's sentiment but didn't want to not draw any more attention to the drama that had previously revolved around that annoying Uchiha.
"We'll be back soon," Shikamaru said to Hinata.
"Sakura-chan, don't let anyone burn under your watch," Kakashi said as he walked past her. Whether he was serious or not, Sakura wasn't sure.
Hanabi descended the podium with the rest of the political figures, and paused, breaking away from Konohamaru's side. She tossed a look over her shoulder, nodding curtly in her sister's way as if to say she was on her side.
Hinata watched Hanabi go, joining the disappearing figures of everyone that were to participate in the discussion, located inside Tsume's humble mansion.
.
"Just stand still," Sasuke instructed, his disposition unfriendly from the start as he came up behind her and bent to her level, aiming his left hand behind her left thigh, finding her hamstrings. Hinata awkwardly brought an arm around his shoulder for support and jumped as he hugged her waist, her knees slightly tucked in as he easily lifted her up to sit on one side of his shoulder.
As he carried her on his shoulder, he maintained one hand on her waist to steady her, all the while she loosely held his hand, their fingers not intertwined.
He joined the formation going around the fire and easily mimicked the way the Inuzukas moved to the rhythm of the drums as he carried her on his shoulder, the movements leaving her no choice but to change up the way she held on for support, her fingers tightened around his for the sake of support.
They had made it around the fire with no words or incident.
When the round was over, Hinata glanced at him as they were coming closer and closer to the podium where Sakura was stationed. She thanked the mask she wore, for she didn't think she could ever look at him directly after all that's happened. After all, he hates her and wants nothing to do with her.
Such a thought suddenly had no bearing after the actions that soon followed. At first, she believed he was adjusting her, his fingers moving further up, brushing her skin along the way. Any onlooker couldn't have noticed the subtle strokes happening ever so discreetly as some of his fingers reached the bare opening, gracing the skin on her back. Her body tensed against his touch as it became apparent it was intentional on his part, and the goosebumps that followed shouldn't have been able to surface with all the heat caused by all the fires.
"Watch it, Uchiha. I'm just about ready to stab you should your hand continue to wander,"
"Can you blame me for trying not to drop you? You're deceptively heavy. I'm more curious about what they've been feeding you. It's like I'm carrying a stag back to camp after a hunt,"
"I'm the one that has to endure your disgusting sweaty hands, so spare me,"
"Says the Hyuga whose cheeks seem to burn for me," He reminded her, as it was not difficult to pick up on how her ears had a flush color at the moment.
"Burn for you?" She scoffed. "You're as delusional as ever,"
"And your denialism knows no bound,"
"You're not the only hypocrite here. Whatever happened to ignoring me?"
"Believe me, I've tried,"
"And you stopped now that everyone is doting on their new advisor? I suppose I expected too much from Kakashi's pet,"
Hinata snapped her head towards Sakura as they passed her, it became obvious that Sasuke intended on going for another round around the fire, away from the podium.
"What are you doing? put me down,"
He purposely let go of her waist, his hand which had been there for support no longer stabilized her. She tightened the hold on his hand when she thought she was going to fall, her fingers latching on, intertwining with his just to stop herself from slipping.
"I thought you wanted me to let go," He said nonchalantly, imagining a glare behind her mask.
"I didn't ask you to drop me. I wonder if anyone will bat an eye or give me away if I were to push you into the flames. The story will be you simply fell," She threatened him. Then again, Sakura might care.
"What about the Anbus? They're witnesses too," He decided to humor her.
"They'll also meet an unfortunate, mysterious end,"
"Let's go ahead and test it out and see how that'll work out for you," Sasuke paused in his step before looking toward the bonfire. She followed the trajectory and wondered what he was up to as he broke formation, heading towards the center, getting as close as he could to the bonfire.
Sharingan and Rinnegan were active as he continued to get dangerously close.
People paused to look their way, believing it to be part of a weird Inuzuka rehearsed act.
Hinata could be seen attempting to get off, as the Uchiha got closer to the bonfire. She looked away from the jumping flames, hoping to shield herself.
Yami moved from his post to stop Sasuke, but Sai intercepted his way.
"You're Yami-san,"
"And you are…?" Yami asked.
"Another small soldier," Sai replied.
"And what's your name? I don't think we ever met,"
"My name does not matter. But a little background about me, I have carried out abductions and assassinations in the past, under her command. I also took part in the Elder operation that helped extract information in order to find her sister. I'm the reason the inquisitor Yamanaka-san did not make it to her shift. I suppose that makes me her right hand,"
Yami turned away from the commotion and both started walking to a more secluded place to talk.
Sai took one look over his shoulder. Hinata's silhouette had disappeared into the fire, along with Sasuke.
"What is that idiot doing?" Sakura asked out loud, irritated by Sasuke's behavior, as she had seen Sasuke accept some edible herb from Naruto before everyone had arrived. "Is he high or something?"
Sasuke sounded smug as he teased the living hell out of her.
"Now what was that about pushing me into the fire?" He had extended his power, using it to create a coating around her, protecting them both as he kept closing in.
The voices that cheered and called out them didn't reach her, as the crackling burning flame and the speeding music wouldn't allow it.
"You're insane!" She roared with laugher as if the flames were dozens of hands reaching out to tickle her. Even with Sasuke's protection, it felt like they had just entered the pits of hell as he stepped deeper into the bonfire.
She turned to him after he finally let her down on the blazing ground. Their masks were the only items touched by the flames, withering into ashes, their hair flowing wildly amidst the fire, the flames illuminated their pale skin into a warm tint glow, and he had wanted nothing more at the time than to see the expression on her face.
"It's kind of sad that you're still impressed by the things I can do,"
"That's hardly true nowadays,"
When he leaned down, her reflexes were automatic. Sasuke retrieved his distance, wincing slightly as he glanced at the knife she held between them, ready to gut him if he were to try any Impropriety again. She risked taking her eyes off him for a second to look around the wailing veils of fire and saw nothing on sight, which almost begged the question if this was an illusion.
"If I had half of your confidence, I'll probably be Hokage," Sasuke said, midly amused. The hold on her kunai strengthened, and she pushed in more. "So it's just as I thought. You thought I was going to kiss you," He reached out and removed a speck of ash from her hair, from the mask that had burned, and showed it to her, while shaking his head.
"You're seriously going to pretend you don't remember sexually harassing me earlier. I forgot the word sorry is not in your vocabulary,"
"Never to a person who's enjoying themselves because of me,"
Her smile was instantly gone.
.
The crowd waited in anticipation and cheered once Hinata reappeared out of the fire, believing it had been a planned act.
Hinata walked up to a clan member, who had been standing by, waiting with an extra mask ready for her as Sasuke stoically passed her. She accepted the mask and glanced down, tracing it with her fingers. Why did she come here tonight?
"I take it you had fun, Hime,"
Sai followed her trajectory. Sasuke could be seen getting punched a few times by Sakura as she motioned in Hinata's way, as they had been gone, inside that fire, for a suspicious amount of time.
"I'm going to hell for what I just did," Hinata murmured. But what did she expect? It's only been day one. Change is hard to come by.
"So what exactly did you do?" Sai asked regardless.
The questions brought back the memories. It was hard not to make a move when she saw she had more agency over Sasuke when he wasn't taunting her inside her mind.
"Let's just say I managed to make a bargain with someone even more devious than you. Someone that knows how to make unreasonable demands. He's going to hate me when he finds out I won't ever hold my end of the bargain,"
"Uchiha-san might collect a payment, against your will," Sai reminded her of his powerful eyes.
"I doubt he'll ever subject his will onto me,"
"Well, aren't you special," Sai said dryly. If she had managed to get the Uchiha on the game board, as a piece, then it was over, huh? He watched as Sasuke opened up a portal and disappeared. "I presume this could very well be the best day you've had so far since victory has been assured," Sai commented.
"Hardly. Weren't you listening to me?"
"What did you promise Uchiha-san in return?" Sai chuckled during her silence. "Never mind. To each their own discretion,"
Sai tucked his hand inside his pockets and stepped out of the way, disappearing into the crowd as people crowded her once more. He needed to find Ino and bring her back to her body before he runs out of time. If he begged for forgiveness, would Ino try to forget about this?
.
Everyone's mask was off, resting before them on the table as Tsume spoke, reading off some notes Hinata had written, but claiming them as her own, when Sasuke Uchiha, suddenly knocked and entered.
Naruto sent him a questioning look as if asking why he wasn't back at the festival, keeping an eye on Hinata.
"I figured power in numbers," Sasuke said while taking a seat next to Shikamaru, their eyes briefly meeting for just a second.
Seconds in, and Kiba started coughing. "Dude, why do you smell like you recently escaped a burning fire?"
"You mean a burning house?" Shino corrected.
"Let's take a five-minute break. I want to give Sasuke a recap of our discussion thus far," Kakashi said from his side.
They all crowded outside, talking, with drinks in their hands. Even though they were taking a supposed break, the conversation continued outside.
"If the problem is money, why not tax their income to recuperate losses?" Shikamaru suggested.
"I don't need to crunch the numbers to know we will still come out at a net loss," Hiashi said.
Sasuke turned away from Kakashi's recap.
"If you're all so on board and eager to show solidarity to a cause, why not allow the Hyuga clan to tax the incomes of every clan member in this village, seizing only when operations go back to normal," Shikamaru had said to Tsume, Shibi, and her allies.
One of the elder's eyes lit up at this proposition, for they just may end up making more money in the long run, by taxing everyone.
Tax every clan? But…
"This is a Hyuga clan issue-" Konohamaru began.
"If the collapse of their economy bankrupts the entire village, how is this just a Hyuga clan issue?" Shikamaru disagreed.
"This is our ancestor's fault for even allowing them to create a monopoly," Konohamaru added as he glanced at Shikamaru. However, wouldn't Nara be the least impacted because he was marrying one of their princesses? He'll end up profiting directly from such a system.
"That's why it would be helpful if you would help us find a solution instead of complaining," Naruto said.
"I always believed it is the ruler's job to serve its people and not the only way around," Shikamaru to Kakashi.
"Then will it please everyone if any profit we make goes to different organizations to help those in need," Hiashi replied. "Including the Uchiha memorial grounds,"
"And who exactly will audit and keep guys in check?" Naruto asked.
Hiashi turned to Sasuke. "It appears we'll be creating more work for you, son,"
"Don't call me your son," Sasuke automatically replied, earning a silent giggle from Hanabi.
Konohamaru and Hanabi wondered what they were even doing there, feeling like they had not much input in the perspective. Still,
"I vote for their freedom," Konohamaru said. "I think it's what my grandfather would've done,"
"I second that. I have never seen Shika so passionate about something before,"
Hanabi nodded in support.
A messenger bird appeared in the opened sky, landing on Kakashi's shoulder, which momentarily stopped the conversation.
Hanabi looked toward Sasuke. 'It's that pigeon again. It looks like it healed,'
"Do you know who that messenger belongs to?" Sasuke asked.
"Yes, but how strange that it came here without a scroll," Kakashi swiftly motioned to a shadow nearby. "Go look for Sai, and find out what he wants. Tell him his messager got clumsy and lost whatever message it might've tried to deliver,"
Soon after, they waited around as Shikamaru helped forged a written treaty, with few words and simple in nature. After everyone signed, Shikamaru glanced down at the empty slot that was missing Ino's signature. The draft was then passed to Kakashi to sign as a witness.
"Damn, I can't believe we won," Naruto said as everyone was getting up to leave the conference room.
"Do you call that winning? Now we have more work to do when we get back," Sasuke complained from his side. "And we have Nara to thank for this shit,"
"Just don't go off slacking and leaving me to do all the work," Naruto said while laughing.
"I say its a fair price to pay, for freedom," Konohamaru said from his side.
Having heard enough of the conversation, Shikamaru suddenly paused on his side.
"Uchiha-san," Shikamaru called out.
Sasuke stayed behind while the group kept going.
"Is this the kind of Advisor you're going to be?" This is exactly the kind of thing he had warned Naruto about. Sasuke shouldn't have ever been trusted. A traitor will always be a traitor. But what in the world would Sasuke gain by pulling such a cheap trick?
"Not sure what I'm being accused of,"
"Your eyes. You used them," He had suspected right away that it had been the Uchiha messing with his perception, because he knew himself too well to know he would've never suggested such an a troublesome solution which would untilmatly put the Hyuga clan in even more of a surmoundable amount of power, yet he did so anyways. And his idea had been blurted out, with no actual careful consideration or planning.
The effect of the herbal drug was finally lifted by then. It wasn't too late to just 'say fuck it,' and tell Hinata the deal was off, just so he gets to keep half of his morals intact. His stomach didn't feel well.
"Hn, is that a fact?"
.
A discussion with fruition, and a decision had been made. The branch members were free. Manes were bouncing and arms moving, under the blazing light, as if in some sort of concert. Masks came off, as there was no real reason to hide conversations anymore.
After delivering the final speech to the crowd, Hinata walked past everyone until she reached her fiance and gave him a tight hug.
"Hanabi told me you were the one that suggested the solution. Thank you, for taking my side. It was all that I ever wanted," Shikamaru's body went ridgit upon hearing those words. Because of who he was, a Nara, his words and advice were normally taken into careful consideration, and tonight hadn't been any different even after the nonesense he had suggested as a solution, which was taken pretty serious, followed by a rapid decision that came to pass.
Shikamaru broke away from the hug to look at her, suddenly finding he might be possibly staring at the answer to earlier's puzzle, the mind behind the Uchiha conspiracy. But he didn't have any prove was so ever, just a gut feeling that his perception might've been messed with.
"Shikamaru-kun, is something wrong?" She asked innocently. He breathed a controlled sigh. If he pursued this idea and has this conversation, it would inedibly lead to the end of them, wouldn't it?
"Guys! Yeah! Look at that!" He motioned to the crowd, "We fucking did it!" Naruto yelled, while high-fiving both Kiba and Shino.
Sasuke looked away from his best friend, internally apologizing for being a scum and breaking promises and laws.
However brief it may be, this marked the end of an exhausting fight as he believed he had cleared a path, and they would no longer have to worry about keeping an eye on Hinata. He could argue he had merely done his job and they could enjoy peace without the schemes. The guilt only felt worst when Naruto pulled him in, grinning next to him and Sakura like an idiot, as he continued to pull Hanabi and Konohamaru into the group hug.
Hanabi pulled away, signing to Sasuke, thanking him for helping them accomplish their dream.
.
Kakashi returned to his office, winding down before calling it a night. His attention was on the eyes of a very intelligent-looking creature that wouldn't leave his side on his shoulder.
He extended his hand towards it and brought it up close for inspection, as it seemed to try to be communicating with him.
"A mind transfer?" It blinked twice. Kakashi immediately sensed, that whoever this was, might be in danger, "Take me to where you believe your body is located,"
