A Titan Ally To Humanity?! Titan Saves Trost District.

From the instant that he'd picked up the morning's newspapers and promptly done a spit-take at the bold headlines, Nile Dok knew, with a bone-deep certainty, that there was trouble brewing in the air.

And not the careless, negligible kind of trouble that would blow over on its own in a week or two, either. No, this was the sort of trouble that would rouse the rabble, stirring up all sorts of mischief and mayhem –and if there was one thing that Nile Dok absolutely could not abide, in his capacity as the Commander of the Military Police, it would be deliberately allowing chaos a chance to fester unchecked among the populace.

The Military Police was meant to keep the peace among the people within the Walls. That there was a Titan masquerading as a regular human… even if it had proven itself useful in the incident at Trost, using a massive boulder to fill in the hole that had been created in the Outer Wall by the same Colossal Titan that had broken through Shiganshina five years ago, Nile was not inclined to give it the benefit of doubt. Not with the potential ramifications that its very presence would doubtlessly bring.

The Military Police had not upheld hard-won peace within the Walls by looking the other way at the first stirrings of trouble.

For this reason, Nile feels absolutely no hesitation at all during Eren Jaeger's military tribunal, when he unflinchingly submits his proposal. "It is the belief of the Military Police that there is merit in performing a thorough examination of the peculiarities of the subject's body. Afterwards, it should be promptly eliminated and disposed of."

From the center of the chamber, the young boy stares at him with wide eyes, chained and kneeling. Nile ruthlessly crushes any pity he might feel towards the child. That's not a boy, that's a Titan, he reminds himself.

"Certainly, his Titan power has helped Trost overcome its peril," he continues. "However, his very existence now threatens to spark a civil war within the Walls. For the sake of humanity, we request for him to lay down his life, leaving behind what information he can so we may–"

"There's no need for that!" The sudden interruption is shrill, piercing. Nile resists the urge to wince. Who decided it was a good idea to let in the Wall Cult? "It's clearly a demon, a pest who's somehow managed to deceive the Walls embodying God's divine wisdom. It deserves to be executed at once!"

The pastor's words set off a small commotion among the crowd, quieting down only after Premier Dhalis Zachary calls for order in the court. Then, the Premier turns and asks the Survey Corps for their own proposal regarding the Titan in their midst.

"We will induct Eren Jaeger as a full-fledged member of the Survey Corps and use his Titan power to retake Wall Maria," the Survey Corps Commander says simply. "That is all."

"… That's all you have to say?"

"Yes, sir."

Typical Erwin. Nile slants a look at his fellow Commander, but Erwin is staring straight ahead, hands clasped behind his back. He's not expressionless, but it's hard to get a read on what the other man is thinking –and it's only Nile's longtime familiarity with him that allows him to pick up the fact that there's an undercurrent of something more to that placid, uncaring act. Knowing the Survey Corps, there's no way they'll be willing to let go of this Titan so easily… so why isn't Erwin fighting harder for its custody?

Don't ever try to guess what Erwin Smith is thinking, you'll just end up tying yourself up in knots and get absolutely nowhere.

Nile scowls.

The questioning moves on from there. There's an unrelated proposal to permanently block off gateways of all the Walls, another outburst from the Wall Cult, and then they arrive at the next line of questioning, regarding whether Eren Jaeger had any true control over his Titan power.

"It says here in the report that you swung your fist three times at Mikasa Ackermann, after you transformed." Premier Zachary reaches up a calloused hand, adjusting his glasses. "Mikasa Ackermann, is this true?"

Beside him, Nile hears a soft, sharp intake of breath. Who–?

Ah, that's Hilda Hilda Tyr. One of his more capable soldiers, in the Military Police. Nile is aware of the less than stellar reputation that his branch of the military has, knows that there is a certain sort of corruption rooted deep within the organization. But it's undeniable that the Military Police still performs an important task, for humanity within the Walls, and every capable, competent soldier is a weight off of his back.

He can't even begin to imagine what she's feeling, in this moment. Learning that there was a human who could turn into a Titan was shocking enough already; learning that it's the adoptive little brother you've lived with for years who can turn into a Titan must be a different sort of shock altogether. And this was on top of the fiasco that was her Lord being murdered in his own castle, on the very day of the Trost Battle.

Hilda hadn't even been in the castle at the time, apparently, which was quite unfortunate. Perhaps Lord Neumann would still be alive, had he not sent off one of his best soldiers on an inane errand to Karanes during a time of crisis.

… Truly a pity.

Despite her brief lapse, Hilda pulls herself together quickly enough, as Mikasa begins talking about how Yes, Eren attacked me, but also He saved my life twice before, as a Titan. I believe that should be taken into consideration as well, sir.

But that was not an objective perspective.

"I know why you take his side with your wishful thinking, Mikasa Ackermann," Nile states. "While investigating Eren Jaeger's background, I came across the record of an incident from six years ago. Let it be known to the court: These two stabbed three adult robbers to death when they were only nine years old. Their actions were understandable, as self defense, but it raises doubts to their morality, their humanity. Eren especially. Can someone like this truly be trusted with the lives, resources, and the very fate of the human race?"

There. Nile steps back, grimly satisfied, as furtive murmuring erupts across the room. What will you do about that, Erwin?

"Killing humans when he was only nine years old?!"

"There's no doubt about it, he must be a Titan who took the form of a child to infiltrate our society–"

"Such a violent nature, there's no hiding it! He's a ticking time bomb that could explode any minute!"

"That one!" A clear voice rings out, breaking across the din. One of the merchants points a trembling finger towards Mikasa Ackermann. "I-If the boy is a Titan, then what about that other one? How do we know if she's human?"

Fear, cloying and suffocating. There is fear clouding the minds of those in the room, gradually driving the people into a panic. While Premier Zachary is ultimately the one with the final say over Eren Jaeger's fate, the will of the majority is not something that can be so easily disregarded, either. With this, surely the Military Police will–

"You don't."

Nile can count on one hand the number of times he's ever heard Hilda raise her voice like this. The girl steps forward in the brief moment that he is stunned by this uncharacteristic behavior, and Nile reacts half a beat too slowly in pulling her back.

"You don't know if she's human," his subordinate continues easily, calmly. Her serene attitude marks a sharp contrast to the rising panic in the room. "She could be a Titan, I could be a Titan–"

Enough is enough; Nile seizes his subordinate's shoulder roughly, "What are you even saying?!"

"You could be a Titan, too, Commander." There's a cold, distant look in her eyes. Hilda has never been particularly warm, as a person, but there's something about her in this moment that's almost… unnerving. For a moment, Nile's grip on her falters. Hilda's gaze bores into him. "Can you prove it to me? Right here, right now, beyond any shadow of doubt. Can you prove to me that you can't turn into a Titan?"

"This is ridiculous," Nile hisses. Around them, the fear of the people is abating, morphing into confusion instead. "What do you think you're even doing, Hilda?"

The girl clicks her tongue, looking away. "Stopping people from thinking that it's a good idea to kill my brother and dissect my sister, just because they're scared and don't understand anything."

What?

Nile… hadn't expected this. Hilda has ever been a responsible soldier to her duties, always able to put cold logic before her personal feelings. To think that she would disobey her orders and act out like this… in retrospect, he should've anticipated this. Nile has seen the way that Hilda cares for her mother, Carla, so in retrospect it only makes sense, that Hilda would care deeply for her family.

Which normally wouldn't be a bad quality for a soldier to have, but in this particular case–

"You are…" Premier Zachary shuffles the papers spread across the table before him. "Ah. Hilda Tyr, is it? Adoptive sister to Eren Jaeger and Mikasa Ackermann?"

"Yes, sir."

At this reveal, the furtive murmuring in the room increases. Nile barely manages to stop himself from slapping a hand over his face.

"You were not present at Trost District, when the incident occurred. Not one of the witnesses for this case, then, even if you're tangentially related," the aged military leader muses. He looks up from the papers, eyes sharp. "You say that it's impossible for someone to prove themselves not a Titan. Fair enough. However, hundreds of soldiers personally witnessed Eren Jaeger transforming into a Titan in Trost. There is no denying that."

Nile sees the girl's hands clenching into fists behind her back. "… No, sir."

"If she's defending the monster, then she must be one of them, too!" A voice calls out, somewhere from the merchant side of the restless crowd. "Kill all three of them and be done with it, I say!"

To Nile's cold horror, the suggestion is met with agreement in the room. This. This was precisely why he'd told her well before the trial to just quietly stand behind him and avoid drawing attention to herself, despite the relation…!

"Wait!" The boy. It's the Titan boy, desperately twisting around the chains holding him down, eyes wide. "I… I might be a monster, but neither of them have anything to do with it! They have nothing to do with it, I swear!"

A derisive snort, "You really expect us to trust that?"

"I'm telling the truth!"

"If a monster like you is covering for them, then that just means that they're monsters, too!"

Well isn't this a fucking disaster–

"NO!"

Silence. In wake of the boy's desperate cry, a hushed silence falls across the room.

"You're all just… coming up with whatever theories you want. Whatever suits your way of thinking." Nile stares at the brazen kid. Eren Jaeger. Does he even know what he's saying? "All of you… have you ever even seen a Titan before? What are you so afraid of? What even is the point of all this, if those with the means and power refuse to fight?"

There's a roaring sound in Nile's ears. In this moment, everyone in the court room is fixated on the boy, whose presence towers above them all.

"If you're too scared to fight for survival yourselves, then help me!" Chain links pull taut and screech against each other, as the boy leans forward, eyes blazing. "You… you cowards!"

"What the hell are you saying?"

"Shut up! If you won't fight, then just shut up and bet everything you have on me!"

After the boy's outburst… the rest of the court hearing almost seems to go by in a whirlwind. Looking back on it, Levi leaping in and beating the kid into a bloody pulp was truly the tipping point of it all; solid, irrefutable proof that the Survey Corps would be able to control the volatile boy in a way that the Military Police could not.

You're scared of him turning into a Titan? Tch, aren't you the ones who want to kill him in the first place? Do you really think you will be able to do it?

"Fuck," Nile mutters to himself, pinching the bridge of his nose. The worst part about it all… everything had played out probably exactly how Erwin had envisioned it. Well, maybe not exactly, but. The Survey Corps had gained custody of the Titan, ultimately. Whether that would prove to be a boon or a curse for humanity…

"I hope you know what you're doing, Erwin," Nile grumbles under his breath. Then raises his voice sharply, as one of his soldiers moves to brush past him without a word. "Hilda, a moment of your time."

The girl pauses, and turns. "Yes, Commander?"

Blank, passive. Like this, it's hard to imagine that she'd spoken out in the tribunal earlier the way she did, against the very specific orders that he'd given.

"Come with me," Nile jerks his head, and starts walking towards his office. A heartbeat later, his soldier falls into line behind him. "We need to have a talk, about your insubordination in court today."

"Ah." Going by that wholly unconcerned tone of voice from the younger girl, Nile can already tell that, no matter what he says, Hilda isn't really going to be hearing any of it. "As you wish, Commander."

Nile sighs, rubbing tiredly at his temples.

… Fuck, he really needs a drink.

.

.

Hilda is full of regret.

… Well, no, not really. She doesn't regret speaking out during Eren's hearing, even though she hadn't gotten very far before being interrupted by some random agitated merchant, and then Eren had promptly leapt to her and Mikasa's defense, against the riled-up crowd. A helpless surge of affection wells up in her chest for her brother at the memory.

I might be a monster, but neither of them have anything to do with it! They have nothing to do with it, I swear!

"You're not a monster, Eren," Hilda murmurs quietly, leaning back and looking upwards towards the heavens. "… I am."

No, Hilda does not regret speaking out for her brother. What she does regret, is not having talked to Eren, before… before everything. Before this entire mess that had gone down in Trost.

She'd always thought that there would be time for a serious conversation about everything after the children graduated from the 104th Training Corps. And then Trost happened.

Hilda may have experienced certain not-memories years and years ago, regarding a frightening future to come, but in the end, those visions were… vague, so to speak. She's left with a general impression of where future events had once been headed, would possibly be heading towards again, but the details are… lost. Blurry, indistinct. She'd known that the Marleyan Warriors would come for Shiganshina, but Hilda hadn't remembered when, or even what the Warriors' true identities were.

Perhaps it would've been better if Hilda had actually recorded her not-memories somewhere, but such information would be dangerous to put down. Not to mention, there was nowhere that Hilda would've been able to hide her own secrets, particularly back when she lived under the Tyburs' watchful eye.

Eren's military tribunal…

It's good, that things turned out the way they did. Brutal beating aside, that is, and it had only been Nile's tight grip on her shoulder that forcibly reminded her of what was at stake, preventing her from resorting to drastic measures.

Had the Military Police truly succeeded in obtaining custody of Eren, Hilda has no doubt that the Interior Police would be quick to involve themselves. There's no doubt that Hilda would've moved to save Eren in that situation, but there was the high chance that it would also mean that she'd have to do something… inadvisable.

Would you do it, if things came down to it? Transform into a Titan, right in the middle of a populated district? You've seen what happened to Shiganshina. Trost, too. All the death, the destruction… would you really do it?

… Yes, she would. If things really came down to it, if push came to shove… she would.

Really, if it's for her family, there is very little that Hilda wouldn't do. That's the entire reason why she's even still here in Paradis, isn't it?

(Hilda has taken to habitually keeping a few of her nails sharp. When anyone asks, she says it's because it's convenient for mundane tasks, opening envelopes or boxes –and it's true. Her nails are sharp enough to cut paper.

Sharp enough to draw blood.)

Regardless, even though it's a good thing that the Military Police hadn't received custody of Eren, it also makes things… mildly inconvenient, for Hilda. She's a member of the Military Police, not the Survey Corps, and right now she can't even find out where Eren is, much less hunt him down for a long-overdue talk. Petra and Oluo would probably know, considering that they were both part of the Survey Corps' lauded Special Operations Squad, but Hilda hadn't seen hide nor hair of either of them aside from that one glimpse of the duo during Eren's trial.

… Their dinner after the next expedition was going to be rocks, mark her words.

To her consolation, at least it was much easier to get a hold of Mikasa and Armin.

"Hilda!"

She's never thought of herself as a particularly tactile person, but upon catching sight of them… Hilda swiftly steps forward and sweeps the two into a hug.

"Mikasa. Armin." Her arms tighten around them. "What happened?"

The Colossal Titan happened, apparently. As Armin explained it, the Colossal Titan had suddenly appeared out of nowhere in front of Trost, then kicked a hole through the gate of the Outer Wall. Just as it had done so in Shiganshina, five years ago.

Five years. Has it really been five years, already?

Due to the dire emergency, every freshly-graduated recruit in Trost at the time had been thrown into battle. So many of their friends and comrades had all died at the hands of Titans. Armin had nearly been eaten by a Titan himself! … Only to be saved by Eren at the very last moment. And then Eren was devoured by a Titan right before his very eyes, in his place–

"What?" Hilda startles, blood turning to ice in her veins. Eren had been eaten?

"He saved me," Armin whispers hoarsely. There are tears brimming in his eyes, from revisiting this memory. "I was in the Titan's mouth, and he… he jumped in and threw me out and… it ate him."

"Impossible," Hilda immediately mutters under her breath with a frown. If Eren had truly been eaten, he would be dead, and someone else would've inherited both the Attack and Founding Titans. Just the very thought of it makes her blood turn to ice in her veins.

She forces herself to relax again, when Armin gives her a questioning look. "I… clearly, Eren wasn't eaten. When did he… turn into a Titan?"

As it turned out, nobody had actually witnessed Eren's initial Titan transformation. They'd only realized it when Eren later emerged from the corpse of a strange Abnormal Titan, one that had been going around relentlessly killing any and every other Titan in sight. And when it finally fell, when it finally stopped moving…

Eren rose from the Abnormal Titan's nape, completely unscathed. Tired and confused, but utterly unscathed.

It's hard for Hilda to muster up any sort of real shock at the story, given what she knows. She compromises and hides her –lack of– surprise by clutching the children close again before they have a chance to scrutinize her reaction.

"I'm sorry the three of you had to experience that on your own," she whispers into their ears. "But I'm… glad that you're all still alive."

Truth. These words are not a lie, spoken from her heart as they are. Hilda is so very fiercely glad that all three of them are still alive, she–

She can't risk it.

She can't risk something like this happening in the future again! It's all well and good that Eren, Mikasa, and Armin made it out fine from the Trost debacle this time around, but…

What if the Warriors made another move again? What if this time, they ate Eren? … Marley's goal was to reclaim the Founding Titan, wasn't it? And everyone within the Walls knew of Eren's existence now. Everyone knew that he was a Titan-shifter, there was no hiding news of this magnitude, not when it had spread all over the populace at this point. And that was dangerous, because Eren now carried a giant, glaring target on his back.

She needs to tell them. Eren needs to know. Hilda has put off this conversation for far too long, clearly, she needs to… she needs to…

"Watch out for each other," is all she manages to choke out, in the end. Not yet. The children deserve to be together for this conversation, and it's not a conversation to be held out in the open under broad daylight, anyways. There's a time and place to be sharing this sort of sensitive information. Just a little bit longer, then, and there will be no more secrets between us. "Eren… he'll need your help, more than you know. Be careful of the other… just, be careful. Please."

Be careful of the other Titan-shifters. Beware the Warriors.

These years that Hilda had spent with the Military Police… in addition to her investigation into the Tybur family's influence, she'd also kept a careful eye out on her fellow Military Police comrades. Because if she were a Marleyan agent, infiltrating Paradis… then the Military Police would easily make a good stepping stone. Corrupt officers, convenient access to the Interior, higher chances of interactions with the nobility. Higher chances of contacting the royal family, and locating the Founding Titan from there.

Hilda might not know who the Warriors are, exactly. She might not know where they've hidden themselves, or what identities they were now operating under. But she certainly wouldn't be surprised if they decided to infiltrate the Military Police for the sake of their mission.

The Colossal Titan's appearance in Trost… the 104th Training Corps.

Hilda frowns, as the potential connection occurs to her. The suspicious timing of it all… could it be, then, that at least one of the Warriors was possibly…?

Best to keep an extra eye out.

Despite her best efforts, Hilda is unable to confirm or deny her suspicions over the next few days. There are a lot of recently-graduated cadets, even despite the great number that had been lost in Trost. Searching through them all is… an exercise in futility. But what else can she do?

It wouldn't do to be overtly obvious in her investigations. The last thing that Hilda needed at this junction in time was to catch the eye of the Interior Squad again. It's largely thanks to the unique characteristics of the War Hammer Titan's ability in the first place that Hilda has consistently been able to stay just one step ahead –if only barely– and she has no intentions of pushing her luck any further, particularly not at such a sensitive junction in time. Aside from Eren's situation, the investigation of Lord Neumann's murder was still ongoing as well.

… Commander Dok had probably intended for Hilda's demotion to be a punishment, for speaking out in Eren's trial as she had. But honestly, it was probably a good thing that Hilda had been demoted from a captain to a mere training instructor. A training instructor was much less likely to draw attention than a captain.

I need to see Eren again.

But unfortunately, Eren is nowhere to be found. The young woman sighs, lacing her fingers together beneath her chin as she leans forward onto the desk in her office. While it's understandable that the Survey Corps would take precautions to keep Eren's location a secret, Hilda can't exactly find herself appreciating their caution right now, not when she needs to find her brother and–

Boom.

Hilda gives a small start, head snapping up as she feels the earth tremble unnaturally, sharp and jarring for the briefest of moments.

Not beneath her feet, not where she's currently sitting. Within the Stohess Military Police barracks, there is absolutely nothing out of the ordinary. However, as the current inheritor of the War Hammer Titan, when it comes to the earth around her, Hilda's awareness has always been something… more. Even wholly untransformed and in a vanilla human state.

"Something wrong, ma'am?"

"… It's nothing," Hilda replies unconvincingly, after a stilted pause. The hapless new recruit who'd been assigned to assist with her paperwork gives her a puzzled look, but lets the topic drop.

What was that?

That was definitely no earthquake. It was –something more akin to a localized tremble, the particular way the earth might shift beneath the force of an explosion, or something similar. But this was Stohess District, and the testing grounds for experimental weapons were nowhere nearby. It had been short, brief, and given the lack of a mass panic, it had probably gone by relatively unnoticed, too–

… Forget this. Hilda finally gives up on trying to concentrate on her paperwork, instead brusquely shoving aside the papers on her desk as she rises to her feet, "I'm leaving."

"E-Eh? What?!" the young recruit gapes at her. "But we're barely even halfway through these documents! Don't they need to be finished before sundown today?"

"Just leave them, it doesn't matter." The boy has a commendable sense of responsibility, but it was sorely misplaced. Especially in an organization like the Military Police. "You're dismissed, Freudenberg."

"Wait, Instructor, please at least reconsider–!"

Hilda lets the office door swing shut behind her, then sets off at a brisk pace to investigate the irregularity that she'd sensed.

This is what she discovers: The corpse of a dead man, slumped in an alleyway that looks like it's been torn down by a wrecking ball.

Or, a paranoid corner of her mind insists, an alley that had a rather unfortunate encounter with a Titan. Hilda has seen first-hand the type of wreckage and destruction that's left behind in towns ravaged by Titans. It certainly matches up with what she sees before her eyes right now, here in the dark underbelly of Stohess District.

Hilda warily surveys her surroundings for another moment, before turning on her heels and leaving.

… Whatever had initially caused the disturbance that she'd sensed earlier was long gone by this point. Was it… one of the Marleyan Warriors, perhaps? Stohess District was located inside Wall Sina, had one of the Warriors successfully infiltrated the Interior, just as she had?… What had they been hoping to accomplish with this? If they had been trying to draw Hilda out, wouldn't they have at least lingered in the vicinity, to observe things?

This doesn't make any sense.

That night, when Hilda returns to the Military Police headquarters, she stays up late combing through the files in the record room. Incident reports. Anything, pertaining to any potential investigations in the Stohess slums–

It's a long shot, Hilda knows. The Military Police… how many of these incident reports are actually true? As lazy and glutted as the Military Police are, how many cases have actually been properly filed and solved? The Stohess slums aren't included as part of the regular patrol routes, either. There's no guarantee that Hilda would be able to find anything useful. This is probably just an entire waste of time again, she should be–

Mission report: Missing Person Investigation.

The missing person, Carly Stratmann, headed to the capital three days ago with her lover, Kemper Boltz…

Hilda glances over the report for all of three seconds, throws it onto the 'discarded' pile, and then pauses. She turns back and slowly picks up the report again, checking the date. Newly-submitted, just earlier today. And this particular investigation… had involved traveling to the slums, to track down a pair of wayward lovebirds…

The location and timing matches up perfectly.

Hilda looks further down the paper, for the name of the soldier who'd submitted the report.

"… Annie Leonheart," she mutters softly. Ah, now there's a familiar name. Annie Leonheart is actually one of the new recruits that Hilda has found herself in charge of after her demotion. Not that this particular girl really needed any training, it seemed, especially when it came to hand-to-hand combat.

Blue eyes, blonde hair.

Blonde hair.

It's such an insignificant detail for Hilda to be caught up on, but…

The young woman's hands tighten, crinkling the report in her hands, "For your own sake, Leonhart, I hope… that it's not you."

Author's Notes:

It's been awhile since the last update! RL has been fairly hectic, and I've been sidetracked by other plot bunnies, for the most part. But rest assured that this story has not been abandoned ̶y̶e̶t̶.

We should be getting to some fun stuff next chapter! Please look forward to it.

Triple update today, new chapter for zenith of stars (JJK OC), and a new plot bunny, step from the light (CSM OC). For anyone who might be interested in step from the light (away in the dark), please note that it's 1) Very spoiler-heavy right off the bat for the Chainsaw Man manga, and 2) Not posted on FFN and is only up on my Ao3 account. Ao3 link is on my profile.

Which brings me to a small announcement: I will be continuing to post new updates for zenith of stars and o valkyrie, arise on FFN here, but any new stories going forward will be on Ao3 instead, since I will be moving away from FFN. Thank you kindly for your understanding.

For update notifications/writing status and additional tidbits, check out my Tumblr! The link is also on my profile, and I'm a lot more responsive over there than I am on FFN.

Happy new year!
