The Next Day

"Okay, so can you reconsider once more?" Pleads a squinting Naruto.

Hinata glares at her companion, but her pouting and blushing face makes the gesture more cute than intimidating. "Naruto-kun! I already said no!"

The blond sighs. "Oh well. Worth a short" He shrugs.

Hinata's pout intensifies. "D-do you want me to teach you, or not?"

Naruto chuckles. "Yes, yes. Jeez, I'm just messing with you Hinata. Relax. I know when no means no." He gives her a thumbs up.

Hinata's cheeks puff out. "Hmph!"

Naruto can't help but grin. Hinata can be so cute sometimes. "Don't worry. Go on. I won't tease you anymore."

Hinata's frown weakens. Reluctantly, she lets the resident Jinchuriki off the hook. "R-right! So, with the Byakugan, you first want to th-think about what it means to look 'everywhere at once' as you call it before looking everywhere at once."

Naruto blinks at that. "Uhhh, you lost me, Hinata."

Hinata purses her lips slightly. "S-so, every Hyuuga has some kind of sensory ability even before they activate their B-Byakugan. The reason your eyes hurt and you get migraines is because y-your mind can't comprehend what it means to be aware b-beyond your visual limitations."

"Hey!" Naruto narrows his eyes. "Are you calling me stupid?"

Mentally replaying what she said earlier, Hinata's eyes widen in panic, realizing her words could come across that way. "N-n-no! I-I d-didn't mean to o-offend you, N-Na-Naruto-kun! I-I just…"

Naruto bursts out laughing. At that very moment, Hinata stops speaking and frowns. She crosses her arms and looks away haughtily like the Princess she was.

Wiping a tear from his eye, Naruto beams a massive grin at the Hyuuga Heiress. "I'm sorry. I really am, but it's so much fun to mess with you, Hinata. You're like a skittish little rabbit."

Hinata pauses, not sure whether to take that as an insult or a compliment.

Sensing her confusion, Naruto clears it up for her. "I didn't mean it as an insult, or a compliment. It's just an observation. Besides, you're cuter than any rabbit I've ever seen, dattebayo!"

Hinata's face explodes with flashes of red and pink, steam bursting out of her ears. "S-stop that already!"

Seeing his friend being overwhelmed, Naruto understood the time for play was over. This is a serious conversation they were having. "Alright, fine. I'll stop. We have better things to do."

Hinata nods, not trusting herself to speak. With a hand over her heart, she breathes slowly, trying to control her heart rate. Finally calm, she continues where she left off. "Th-the reason your eyes hurt and you get migraines is because y-your mind can't comprehend what it means to be aware beyond your visual limitations."

"Okay, I get that, but what does that mean?"

Hinata ponders on how to simplify her explanation. "S-say you had a blind friend. H-how would you explain to them what it was like to see?"

Naruto's lips set into a thin line. That was a good question. "I don't know. I couldn't really use visual words to explain. They can't really understand what it is like since they can't see." Suddenly, his eyebrows shoot up into his hairline. "Ohhh. So that's what you meant."

She nods. "Yes. If you don't know what it's like to be aware beyond normal sight, you can't understand what it's like to use the B-Byakugan. Your mind can't understand, so it would reject the new information e-entirely."

Naruto hums. "Hmmm. It's still kinda complicated, but I see what you mean. So is the first step learning how to sense?"

Hinata smiles brightly. "Yes! Y-you need to learn how to sense movement and presences all around you before you can even attempt to use Byakugan, N-Naruto-kun."

Naruto's eyes brighten and sparkle. 'How fascinating.' "So The Byakugan's 360-degree vision is like sensory, but with your eyes?"

Hinata quirks a brow. What a strange, simple, yet fitting explanation for the Byakugan. "Uh-huh."

They stay there for a minute, in awkward silence. Thankfully, Naruto mustered the courage to break the silence. "So… how do I start?"

Hinata flinches out of her daydreaming. "O-oh! R-right." She fiddles with her thumbs, still working down the jitters. "Okay, so, I need you to sit down on the ground, w-with your legs crossed."

Naruto obeys, sitting on the grass with his legs crossed. It feels strangely natural, and comfortable. "Okay, so what next?"

Hinata mirrors Naruto, sitting in the same position directly in front of him. "I need you to meditate."

Naruto's bottom lip curls toward his chin in a show of confusion. "Meditate?"

"Yes. I need you to meditate and relax. W-When I think you are there, I-I'll tell you what to do next."

Naruto shrugs indifferently. Seems reasonable enough.

The rambunctious blond sits down cross-legged and closes his eyes, the same way he's seen Ero-Sennin meditate those few times during their training trip. He sits still for a few minutes, simply letting his mind wander to fill in the boring void of wasted time. Thoughts of running amok in the Hokage hat, painting the monument and walls of the village. Thoughts of the future and the past. He digs every crevice, every nook, and cranny inside his mind, anything to distract himself.

At last, irritation sets in. His eyes begin twitching and he begins tapping his fingers against his knuckles. Even after that, he has to suppress a groan at the exercise.

Hinata walks up to him with a stern frown. "That was nowhere near good enough. You were nervous and energetic. In order to meditate correctly, you need to be relaxed. Try again. Th-this time, focus on controlling and evening out your breathing."

This time, he can't quite hold back the groan grating the back of his throat.

The Hyuuga Heiress narrows her eyes. "This is for your own good, N-Naruto-kun."

Naruto sighs and closes his eyes. Getting back in position, he takes in a deep breath and exhales slowly. Focusing on the movements inside his body and the feeling of air rushing in and out of his lungs, Naruto loses himself in thoughts all loosely centered on his muscle movements and the sounds of something as mundane as breathing.

Just like before, his thoughts go back to random things, like the rumors of someone inventing a dessert ramen somewhere in Kiminari no Kuni! Normally, he'd be offended by such sacrilege, to violate the sanctity of ramen! But he'd be lying if he said he wasn't curious to try it, even if only to confirm that the hate is warranted.

And then there's how his nose started to itch all of a sudden when he's trying to remain calm of all things! Or how he's still not entirely sure what Jiraiya's books are about. He's essentially Jiraiya's editor, yet he has no clue about the context of the character's actions. Like why is the girl always so nervous around the main character? Or why does the main character make so many women nervous? He doesn't seem all that scary. In fact, he seems kind of lame, not even entirely real.

And why does everyone get naked so often?!

"Ahem."

The sound of someone clearing their throat makes Naruto sigh. He opens his eyes and takes this time to scratch his irritated nose. His curious gaze sets on his dear friend. "What now?"

Hinata stays silent for a few awkward seconds. She stays still, her hands folded in front of her, just staring quizically at the blond. The intensity of her stare makes Naruto flush in embarrassment. "What'd I do wrong?"

Hinata hums. "Y-you definitely seem less… twitchy. Your body was not as excitable as before, and your breathing was even, but…" Hinata pauses again. She's metaphorically grasping at straws. She knows she's missing something, but can't quite place it.

"You seem stuck." Observes her new student. He smiles softly. "I'm still here. If you need help sorting out whatever is going on inside your head, let me know. I'm not the smartest, but I believe I do some pretty good thinking when it's needed, dattebayo." He ends with a cocky grin.

Hinata's eyes widen at the sudden epiphany. "Th-that's it! Thoughts! Naruto-Kun, what were you thinking about when you were meditating?"

Naruto raises a highly skeptical brow. "Umm, well, I thought about anything, really. Like about Ero-Sennin's books, and how dumb they were, and-"

"That's the problem! You were thinking!"

He gives her a stink-eye. "I don't like how you said it. What do you mean by that, 'ttebayo?"

Hinata flinches and smiles apologetically. "G-Gomen. That came out wrong! I-I didn't mean it like that!"

Naruto sighs and waves her off. "I thought so." He sighs. "Man, it's really hard to stay mad at you, Hinata."

She beams a beautiful smile at him. "A-anyway, what I meant was that even though your body was calmer and more relaxed from earlier, your mind was still just as energetic a-and anxious. You need to learn to calm your mind down as well."

"How do I do that?"

"Focus on your breathing and only your breathing. I want your mind to be blank. You must think of nothing at all. You can't even think about thinking!"

"Huh?" He yells out, incredulous. "How can you think about nothing? That makes no sense! Even when there's nothing around you, your mind naturally creates things for you to think about. It's called imagination, dattebayo! I mean, how?"

Hinata cracks a weak, uneasy grin. "Ano, I-I can't really explain it too well. It's one of those things you can't learn from an explanation. You need to experience it for yourself to understand."

Naruto sighs heavily. He drags a hand across his face in exasperation. "Well, how will I even know if I'm doing it right, then? Like, can you even tell if I'm making progress?"

Hinata's eyes glaze over. Old, buried memories flash before her eyes. Phantom pains make her hands feel tingly, and tears prickle at the corners of her eyes. When she was young, she remembers learning this herself. Her father would strike her on her hands with a meterstick every time she made a mistake.

She hated that time of her life. Feeling weaker than she ever felt, defenseless, and with no power to her name, other than her literal name. Thankfully, she managed to learn a lot during that time and understood the basics of the Byakugan through this method.

But even so, she just couldn't ever see herself striking Naruto like that. She doesn't have the emotional strength to do it. But maybe…

Mustering up all the strength in her being, the meek girl forces herself to grind out what needs to be said. "Y-you just need to k-keep trying, Naruto-kun. I-If you make a m-mistake, then I'll tap you with a Jyuuken poke. Even if you can't understand your progress, y-your body will."

"What?! Jyuuken?!" Naruto cannot believe his ears. Hinata, the kindest person he's ever met, someone who would probably cry if she stepped on an ant is willing to hurt him for his sake? "But those hurt so bad! Is there any other way?" He needs to test her resolve once more.

Hinata bites her lip and closes her gentle lilac eyes. She forces herself to shake her head negatively.

Sitting still for a couple of beats, Naruto observes Hinata. Once confident in her answer, he nods and gets back to meditating.

He focuses on his breathing and the feel of his breath motions. 'In. Out. In. Out.'

His eyes widen comically when he feels a sharp, searing pain on a nerve between his ribs. "OUCH! What the hell?"

Hinata frowns sadly but swallows down all the painful emotions to do her duty. "You were thinking."

"What?! But how did you-"

"I just know."

Not having a rebuttal for such a blunt, yet vague answer, Naruto bites down a particularly nasty remark he knows Hinata doesn't deserve. "Whatever." He shakes it off and gets back to meditating.

A Few Days Later

Naruto sits cross-legged on the ground, breathing slowly and deeply. His body is relaxed to the point it looks like he's asleep. His mind is awake, but it's blank and inactive.

In the distance, Hinata sighs in relief, finally done with the painful and tedious elements of training. She's grateful Naruto caught on quickly. She doesn't know how much longer she could last poking, stabbing, and generally causing pain to the one she loved. It doesn't matter, though. That's behind them, soon to be forgotten.

"Naruto-kun."

Naruto tenses and releases a breath he was holding. Still somehow relaxed, Naruto opens one of his eyes to look at his partner. "Yes, Hinata?"

"It's time for the next step." She responds with a small upturn of her lips.

Naruto's body deflates. "Oh. thank God! I don't know how much longer I could've lasted!"

Hinata sweatdrops. "Y-yes, well, for the next step, I need you to remember something." Demurely sneaking glances at him, Hinata wills herself to get back on topic. "D-do you remember back in the Academy when we unlocked our chakras? You remember what Iruka-sense had us do?"

Naruto squints in concentration. If he remembers correctly, most of the clan children already had their chakra unlocked. The only ones needing help unlocking their dormant power were the civilian children, like Sakura, and… himself. Although he was a special case.

"Iruka-sensei had us do some kind of quiet meditation and search inside of ourselves, inside of our core, and pull on a warm feeling rumbling in our gut. That was how most got access to their chakra." He recalls.

"H-Hai. I n-need you to do that again. This time, when you meditate, instead of pulling on your chakra, I need you to hold onto it and familiarize yourself with it." She finishes.

The Uzumaki pauses, processing the words spoken to him. "Can you explain further?"

Hinata fiddles with her fingers, digging deep inside her for a better explanation. She thought she did a pretty good job explaining herself earlier. "Wh-when you get a hold of your chakra, become familiar with it. Identify a-all the things that make it unique and stand out. M-Markers in your own chakra, I guess. Understand and memorize the feeling of your own chakra. After that, we'll move on to the next step." After finding a better answer, Hinata relaxes and concluded her orders with growing confidence. In the end, she smiles at the Jinchuriki, not for his progress, but more so in pride at her growing self-worth.

Naruto purses his lips. How strange. 'It sounds like she's… teaching me how to sense chakra. But how? I thought you had to be born a sensor to sense chakra. How can you just… learn to do that? Have the Hyuuga Clan kept this hidden this entire time, or is this something Konoha has kept secret?' Despite his skepticism and concerns, he trusts Hinata more than most. He doubts she will do him wrong.

"Alright." Sitting back down and getting in position, Naruto takes a deep breath and relaxes his entire body. "Tell me when."

Hinata simply nods slightly, and Naruto closes his eyes. He meditates for barely ten seconds before his eyes snap open.

"By the way, how did you know I was thinking when I was meditating these last few days, dattebayo?" It completely slipped his mind, but now it's gnawing at his psyche. He needs to know.

Hinata grins coyly. "I used the Byakugan. Did you know that when a person thinks, their eyes twitch and move depending on what kind of thoughts they have? I used the Byakugan to look behind your eyelids and see if your eyes were moving. If they were, I knew you were thinking, and I addressed that." Her grin stretches out into extreme proportions, likely from holding in a massive laugh.

Naruto shakes his head, sighing dramatically. He lowers his head, hiding a smirk building on his face.

In the end, he failed to hold in a chuckle. Thinking nothing of it, he turned to look at Hinata, only to see her self-control slip. The heiress burst into laughter, and after another shake of his head, Naruto joined her in the fun.

A Few Hours Later

'Hmmm. I can feel that my chakra has a kind of heaviness to it or a density. If regular chakra is milk, then my chakra is yogurt. My chakra also has a bite, a corrosive element to it. And the color is like a yellowy gold, maybe. Or gold-ish. What's the best way to describe it, though?'

Thinking to himself, Naruto is fully in tune with his chakra and the distinct feel of it. It's quite unique, in all honesty. It's dense and heavy, powerful, warm, and bright, with an unassuming harshness to it. If he's quite frank, the feel of it tumbling in his coils feels just like the sun warming his skin in the daylight hours of the day. Such a warm, refreshing, comforting feeling.

He opens his eyes. An epiphany hits him. "My chakra… it's like the sun. That's what it feels like, dattebayo."

Hinata dismisses Naruto's statement. Everyone has their own way to identify their chakra, and Naruto is using the sun as a reference. In all fairness, she can't disagree with the assessment. Personally, she feels like her chakra is like the ripples in a disturbed lake. Calm, tranquil, and nervous, all signaling what lurks beneath the waves.

"That's great, Naruto-kun. I'm glad you could feel comfortable with your chakra." Truly, she was happy with his progress.

"Soooo… what now?"

"A-are you really sure that you can recognize your chakra?" Asks the heiress.

Naruto's brows knit together slightly. "Yeah, I am. So what now?"

Hinata smirks humorously. It's uncharacteristic of the person Naruto befriended throughout the last few years. "Go walk up to the nearest tree, and pour as much of y-your chakra into it as you can, Naruto-kun."

Naruto does as told. When it comes to training, Naruto is still confused about Hinata's methods, but she's the expert, not him. He has no room to question her.

Walking up to the nearest tree, he sees a younger, more juvenile tree. Not quite a sapling, it's far beyond that, but not necessarily what comes to mind when someone thinks of a tree. Feeling the smoother, more vibrant bark of the young tree, Naruto infuses his chakra inside the tree, watching as a small glow sinks inside the deeper recesses of the tree.

Seeing his friend/sensei gesture for him to come over, Naruto quickly forgets about the tree and sits back in his original spot. The grass around the spot feels so soothingly comfortable, he can't help it.

Eyes flickering skittishly between the young tree and the young man, Hinata shakes off her paranoia. "S-so now, you sh-should try meditating again. T-try to detect your chakra inside the tree."

Naruto closes his eyes and controls his breathing. Focusing on his chakra, he feels the movement of the energy within his coils. Trying to sense outward, Naruto focuses some of his attention on the left. The tree he marked is not very far at all, barely 5 meters away.

But to his sensory range, he still can't feel anything besides his own chakra inside his body. As far as he can tell, he's the only living thing in the entire forest. He's so absorbed in the nuances of his chakra that he can't hear the chirping of birds in the forest. He can't smell the fragrance of the small flowers nearby. He can't feel the breeze brushing the hairs on his arms and head. Nothing else exists but himself, and the bright light coursing through his body.

And then, suddenly, like a match lighting a flame in the dark, inside the vast nothingness around him, he can see a small, glaring hope hidden behind the shadows. A bright sunny spot in the middle of the night. It feels like a patch of warmth easing his skin in the biting chill surrounding him.

It's a faint, weak little thing, but boy is he glad to have found it. That tiny little spot… it feels exactly like him -well- more like an extension of himself. A miniature sun all of his own floating in space. And it's exactly where he touched the tree.

"I think I found it. My chakra is on the tree. It's faint, but it feels exactly like my own chakra. Is… is this right?" He asks, unsure if this was supposed to happen.

Hinata's mouth hangs open in shock. That… He wasn't meant to master that so quickly! That made no sense! "W-well… y-yeah, you got it, Naruto-kun."

Naruto grins and thumps his chest. "Alright! I'm just that awesome, huh?"

Hinata giggles, but quickly resorts back to her professional attitude. "S-so now I need you to mark more trees. Find ones closer and farther away, and change the amount of chakra you use."

Naruto summons a dozen clones. Each clone runs off to the forest nearby and pours chakra into the trees.

One clone picks the tree nearest and dumps a massive amount of chakra inside it. Other clones chose random trees at random distances and put an average amount of chakra inside. Finally, two clones go farther than the rest. One puts an absurd amount of chakra on a big tree, while the other puts a small, faint amount of chakra on the tiny tree directly behind it.

Once they're all done, the clones dispel, and Naruto suppresses the memories of where the markers are. He won't progress if he knows exactly what to look for.

Once more closing his eyes and centering his mind, Naruto spreads out his senses, trying to pick up on the tiniest traces of chakra. Immediately, he can pick out the powerful signature of the tree closest to him. It's like a blaring Katon Jutsu in his mind's eye. That's easy enough. Nothing to be concerned about.

Focusing back on his coils, Naruto feels the rhythm and vibrations of his chakra. That weird pulsing that it does. It's like he can feel it on his skin, all around him. Finally finding frequencies synchronizing with the pulse, he grabs onto it, and immediately he can feel the new signatures.

It's a wonderful feeling, actually. To be able to visualize the flames flickering in his view at different sizes, brightness, and distances… It's like watching fireflies light up a field in the night, or ornate lanterns floating in the sky for a festival. It's stunning.

After enjoying the lights, Naruto furrows his brows and frowns. "Hmmm. I summoned twelve clones, yet I can feel only ten signatures. I can't find the last two."

Hinata hums. "D-do you need my help?"

Naruto keeps his eyes closed but shakes his head. "No, I don't need your help right now. Thank you, though."

Naruto keeps hold of the signatures, and he begins to sift through the memories of his clones. He doesn't want the actual location of the signatures, but rather, a hint. Slowly, beads of sweat form on his brow, and a vein bulges on his temple. Focusing on his chakra, keeping hold of the signatures, and sifting through his clone's memories at the same time… it's difficult. Almost impossible.

It's like looking up, down, and behind you at the same time!

So focused is he on his memories that Naruto lets his concentration slip, and he loses track of his chakra signatures. Shaking off his frustration, Naruto keeps looking through the perspective of his clones, trying to find a solid clue.

The back of the forest!

He still doesn't know exactly where the mark is yet, but he roughly knows the distance! Naruto retreats back into his chakra system, observing and feeling the flow. Eventually, just like before, the flames around him are all lit once again, illuminating the darkness that is the meditative state.

Clapping his hands together, Naruto tenses his body and stretches out his concentration to the border and limits of his mind. Veins throb angrily around his face and temple. His tensing forces his mouth into a stern frown. He still feels nothing.

Going further still, Naruto takes inspiration from Shikamaru's shadow possession, and instead of a total wide-area focus, he stretches his attention in one specific direction, completely surpassing what he was capable of at the time.

Stretching out his senses to his right, Naruto grits his teeth tightly. The strain is starting to get to him. He groans out audibly, some pain becoming visible on his face.

"-kun!"

Still not giving up, Naruto narrows his focus even further, and his eyes begin twitching uncontrollably.

"-uto-kun!"

At last, he can finally feel something right at the edge of his field of vision. Groaning loudly, he pushes well past safety, all in an effort to break out of any kind of limits on his mind.

"Naruto-kun!"

With one final heave, Naruto can finally see it. At the very end of his range, he found the brightest flame he has ever seen. A flame so far, yet so bright it's like looking at a star or supernova in the far corners of his galaxy. It's oh so beautiful. Stunning beyond compare!

But It's still not enough. This is only 11 chakras signatures he's found. He knows he made 12 marks.

And the brightness of this flame is weird. It warbles slightly at some points. He wonders what that could mean.

"Naruto-kun, stop! You'll hurt yourself!" Pleads a teary-eyed Hinata.

Naruto tries his best to grind out a response. "I'm… almost… a-at a… breakthrough…"

He hopes Hinata could understand.

Trying his best to ignore Hinata's pleas, Naruto finally gives in and absorbs all of his clone's memories. He knows where one through eleven is, and he finally finds the location of number 12.

'It's behind marking eleven?!'

Naruto's body shivers violently, but he wills himself to stretch his range even further. He winces as an agonizing migraine or hypertension, (or whatever the fuck that ache in his brain is called) threatens to split his skull in two.

Focusing on marking eleven, he can see the warble better. Every three seconds, three pulses come out at once near the center, instead of two. Squinting his eyes, he tries to look either inside or beyond the bright supernova, hoping for something.

His nose starts to bleed, but he doesn't care. Naruto looks beyond the sun, beyond the tree, beyond his range, and beyond the agony in his skull, and at last, he sees it.

The fading embers of a dying star.

A resounding *CRACK* is heard inside his skull as his ears pop, but he still refuses to quit. He finally found the final signature, It was hidden, or rather masked by the much larger and more intense chakra of the sun. This tiny, dying dwarf of a signature would've been hard to find on its own, let alone masked.

But, he did it. As small as it was, and faint it may be, but at least he did it. At last, he counts twelve.

One, two, three, four, five, six, seven, eight, nine, ten, eleven… and twelve. 12 out of 12.

Finally releasing his hold on his chakra and opening his eyes, Naruto gasps out loud for a greedy breath of air. His winces as the sunlight sear his irises, burning them and temporarily blinding him. He holds his head and tries his best not to cry at the pain.

Before he can scream, a soft body rushes to his side and holds him, caressing him fondly, soothing him from his self-inflicted suffering, and lulling his addled mind back to serenity.

A drop of moisture hits his cheek. Weird. He didn't remember there being any sign of rain, today.

"W-why…? Wh-why would you go so far? W-why would y-you hurt yourself, Naruto-kun?" Sobs out a crying Hinata.

'Oh. It's a tear. I made Hinata… cry.'

"I… I'm sorry, Hinata. I wasn't thinking straight." He defends weakly.

"Damn right, you weren't! If something had happened to you, I… I-I couldn't f-forgive myself." She cries.

Naruto frowns sadly. He bites back down a lump in his throat and the tears prodding for release. "I'm sorry. I… I'll be more careful from now on."

"It… it's all my fault! If only I had known, I-I would've never let you… let you…"

"Don't do that!" He yells. "Don't blame yourself for my mistake! I was… I was being stupid. I never know when to quit or take a break. It's my fault that I hurt myself, to begin with. You told me to stop, and I didn't."

Hinata sniffles, but doesn't say anything.

"Hey." Naruto reaches up and wipes a tear away from Hinata's face. "You are a great teacher, Hinata. You have helped me get so far already, and you're still trying so hard to keep me pushing." He starts blushing, suddenly feeling vulnerable and lame. "So thank you for all that you do for me." He squints apologetically, conveying as much regret as he can. "And I'm sorry for scaring you. I truly am. So please stop beating yourself up over it."

"W-will you… will you listen to me now when I tell you to stop?" She whispers, desperately.

Naruto smiles reassuringly. "Of course."

"You better!" She orders weakly.

Suddenly, Naruto smirks. "Heh, at least I managed to find all the signatures. It… was so not worth it."

Hinata giggles weakly. Tears still run down her cheeks, but at least she's smiling, now.
