Nia was fortunate to get an interview with Lena Luthor at her office so soon. Once she relayed what her article was supposedly about she was told Miss Luthor would be happy to speak to her. so dressed in her professional suit and pants, her brown hair tied back in a ponytail, Nia Nal followed her assistance Miss Price up to the top floor where Lena waited for her in her large glass office. The tall woman greeted her warmly shaking her hand, offering a seat in front of her imposing desk before asking her assistant to get them some drinks. "Would you like tea?" Lena asked.
"Oh, um, yes please" she replied politely, taking a seat putting her bag down and pulling out her notepad. In truth she wasn't thirsty but it seemed rude to turn down the offer.
Lena nodded to her assistant, who walked off to fetch them a tray. Lena returned to her desk and sat down, leaning forward interlacing her fingers confidently. "So, Miss Nal. I was surprised when I got a call from Cacto asking for a meeting with one of their reporters" she said. "In truth, I was expecting Kara Danvers."
"Yes" she said apologetically, understanding Kara and Lena were friends. She had debated approaching Kara to talk to Lena on her behalf. But given how uncertain her visions were about Supergirl right now she wanted to get as much information about this on her own first. "Kara is on another assignment right now" she explained vaguely, hoping Lena didn't see through the pathetic lie. "I was hoping to ask you some questions about Maxwell Davies for a follow-up article we're writing, if it wouldn't be too much trouble."
Lena's poker face was convincing, but Nia still managed to note the tiniest of grimaces in her lips before the woman asked "why not talk to the man himself. I'm sure he'll be quite happy to answer all of your questions."
Nia chuckled. She assumed the same. She figured dancing around the topic could get her nowhere so she opted to trust her mentor's friend with the truth. "To be candid, Miss Luthor, the reason I'm here is because I know you are standing in direct opposition to Mr Davies's latest venture. The Samaritan? I'd like to know more about it and get your side of the story."
Lena leant back in her seat crossing her arms, analysing the girl suspiciously. Nia tried not to show how uncomfortable she was under her gaze. Lena didn't know she was Dreamer. Only the select few at the DEO did, including Jon and her family. The topic never came up when Lena was around so she left it alone. Kara had asked if she would like to let her best friend in on it but Nia said no. until now it didn't seem like she needed to. But now she realised if Lena had known she could just come out and tell her about her powers, her visions and her certainty Maxwell Davies was the man in red.
If Lena suspected her true identity, she didn't let on as she asked her "why are you so interested in Maxwell Davies? What is this article really about?"
Nia swallowed nervously, glancing at her notepad where she had scrawled a handful of hasty cover stories in case she needed them. She dismissed each of them knowing Lena was intelligent enough to see right through them. So she asked herself, what would Kara do? She would be honest, especially with Lena Luthor. "I have my suspicions that Mr Davies used illegal practices to promote and maybe finance his Samaritan project. I had a…a source that claims he might be linked to the attack orchestrated by Cyborg Superman."
Lena titled her head, leaning forward again. Nia had captured her attention. "Linked how?" she asked.
"There's a possibility he was working with Hank Henshaw and used his attack as a way to unveil his battle suit" she explained. "Maybe even going so far as to interfere with his capture."
Lena listened, her expression and mask of intrigue. After a moment of silence she fixed her eyes on the young woman. "Who is this source of yours?" she asked sceptically.
"I'm afraid I can't answer that" Nia replied, playing the card every reporter is known to have. No journalist is at liberty to reveal their sources, not even if that source in themselves.
Lena understood the stance, being friends with a journalist. She smiled in approval, as if the question had been a test. "You'd right in thinking I'd love to help you expose him" she declared, rising to her feet to look out over the city. Nia saw her reflection in the glass window as the mask finally lowered and she saw the fury Lena held for the man. "In fact I've had my own suspicions about his involvement in that attack. Unfortunately it has been difficult to prove."
Nia sat up and turned to a fresh page, already jotting notes down as she asked her questions like any good reporter would. "What makes you suspect he was involved in criminal activity?" she asked.
"I know he stole from my company" he replied, which sparked Nia's interest. Lena looked over her shoulder at the young woman, her expression neutral as she requested this stay off the record. Nia closed her notebook to comply, waiting for the woman to walk cautiously back to her desk. "You know about his reputation as a charming gentlemen" she assumed, taking a seat inhaling deeply. "It shames me to admit that I was… taken in by his charm. And in a moment of weakness I left him in my apartment where he gained access to my personal laptop and used it to download a series of files. Blueprints which he acclimated into his Samaritan designs." Nia's eyes widened while Lena sighed, still furious with her oversight. "I should've expected it" he muttered.
Nia listened patiently, gently pressing with a follow up question to keep her talking. "Off the record, what did Maxwell steal?"
"Davies approached me officially offering a partnership between L-Corp and TITAN Industries. As part of that deal he wanted access to my brother's designs, specifically his battle suits. He actually claimed to be an admirer of his" she scoffed, mumbling "might be the only thing I'd believe to be true. Those designs were copied and then used to make his new project. I've filed a dozen lawsuits, but his legal team are rather resilient. Red tape has left us in knots."
"So you can't prove he stole L-Corp property" Nia sighed, disappointment on her face. She looked back at the older woman and felt sorry. She couldn't imagine what it must've been like to be used like that. "I know we're off the record, but have you considered exposing his underhanded practice to the media?" she asked warily. "If the legal system won't help then maybe public opinion…"
"I appreciate the sentiment but that would be foolish" Lena interrupted coldly. "The one thing you need to understand, and you can put this in your article, is that Maxwell Davies is a manipulative snake. This reputation in the tabloids was not made out of reckless daunts of a millionaire playboy. It was the clever result of a shrewd businessman using every advantage at his disposal to achieve his goals. I'm sure I'm not the first "business partner" to have been compromised into his benefit. As he so correctly pointed out, all I'd be revealing is that we had a momentary affair. The only thing I'd be damaging is my own professional image."
Her assistant finally returned with their tea, placing it on a table beside them before bowing politely back out of the room. Lena took the breather to pour them a cup each and take a sip. Nia finished scrawling some notes while considering her next question carefully. She understood now why Lena was so personally against Maxwell, but there was nothing here that helped confirm her visions. So she moved back to the topic of the Samaritan. "What do you know about his plans for the Samaritan?"
Lena looked back at her lowering her tea cup, taking a deep breath explaining "I know he plans to create as many of them as he can. He envisions arming the police force and the National Guard with them to help combat dangerous threats. The sort of threats Supergirl usually deals with."
Nia nodded, pointing out "that sounds like a worthy goal."
Lena studied her a moment, reading the unspoken words and agreed "it also sounds like the potential for trouble. They were based off designs by my brother, so we both know what could happen if they fell into the wrong hands. That's why I turned him down. The risk was too great. But now he's petitioning the DOD for the resources to follow through with it."
Nia shivered, the memory of his face in his vision surrounded by duplicates flashing through her mind. And army of his super suits would spell disaster. "How far do you think he would go to make sure the deal goes through?"
Lena sat back casting her eyes to the ceiling, clenching her jaw. "I don't know." She then dropped it back to Nia, fixing her gaze on her. "May I ask a question now?" she requested. Nia gave it a moment before reluctantly nodding. "This source of yours" she said, leaning forward intently as if to try and read her thoughts. "Do they believe Davies is responsible for orchestrating the attack on National City?"
Nia held her gaze and thought very carefully about how to word her answer. "Do you think it's possible he had something to do with it?" she rebuffed, in case she accidentally gave something away.
Lena narrowed her gaze, wondering if the evade was suspicious or just cautious. "I wouldn't put it past him" she replied.
Nia nodded, telling her with great care "What if I was to say that someone believes he was working directly with cyborg superman to stage the attack?"
"A publicity stunt?" Lena nodded. "I'd say this…someone…would need a lot of evidence to prove it."
It seemed Nia and Lena were on the same page now, so the young reporter threw caution to the wind and suggested "we should work together. Find out what Mr Davies is hiding and expose him."
Lena smiled, nodding optimistically. "I agree. But we'll need more help" she said, sitting back and crossing her arms. She looked back at Nia and suggested "maybe we should get Kara in on this. Assuming she's not too busy on her assignment?"
Nia froze at the mention of Kara's name, stifling a gulp as she weighed the odds of needing her. But she figured out very quickly they'd stand a better shot of exposing him with her help. But it would make things awkward with the three of them in the same room, not just because Kara would have to keep Lena in the dark about Nia's secret. "Okay. I'll see if she's available" she relented, hoping it wouldn't make things too weird.
