A/N: Technically the infiltration of the city began in 4.4, but I think this works as a bridge between where 4.3 ends and the next episode started.

04x03, 'Breaker of Chains'

Jorah is a man of action. He isn't used to sitting around waiting for that action to be finished. He is Daenerys' general. He should be there on the frontlines fighting with the rest of her men.

But she doesn't want her men to fight tonight. She wants the slaves of Meereen to make a choice. And that requires diplomacy.

So Grey Worm and a few of the other Unsullied are chosen to go in favour. Grey Worm has the advantage of Valyrian being his mother tongue and understanding the Meereenese's plight for himself. Jorah isn't too proud to admit that the Unsullied officer is the best man for the job.

Still, not knowing what is going on within those walls is a strange feeling.

Daenerys concurs. She paces up and down the small space, casting glances outside at the shadow of the pyramid each time she does so, clearly conjuring up a hundred different outcomes to tonight.

"You worry too much," Daario Naharis comments as she passes him for the fiftieth time. He's balancing casually on the back two legs of his chair as he twirls his dagger idly between his fingers. It's a garish, ugly thing, with its handle carved into the likeness of a naked woman.

Daenerys shoots him a scathing look as she passes the other way, too wound up to be in a mood for his blasé attitude. Jorah exchanges a look with Ser Barristan. Under other circumstances Jorah would be quick to placate her, but he knows that if he tries to do that now he'll only come across as patronising, and he has no wish to bring the dragon's wrath down on his head, nor does he want to belittle her authority. She is his queen, now and always. He has no wish to give anyone the impression that she is not far and above the greatest ruler regardless of her sex.

She likes to deal in certainties. He can't give her any right now.

And so there they sit, in this strange limbo, waiting to find the cost of their gamble.
