Lina didn't even think about going to school. When Stella finally drove the car away, she ran off the school property. Her new school friend Zachary was waiting for her at the playground. He left a message for her nanny - using software to make her think Kelly sent her the message - to give them a big head start in running away from home. Lina wants to go back to Germany. Zachary wants to go to his older sister in New York, so they got together with a brilliant plan.
But it turned out very differently than expected. Zachary just wanted to get the dog he'd been hiding in an old, neglected warehouse for a whole week. Suddenly his parents didn't allow the dog anymore. The younger sister suffered from an allergy. But Zachary didn't want to give his dog to the shelter.
They were about to put the leash around the dog when suddenly there was a loud bang…
Some time later
"Zachary? Zachary, wach auf!" Lina said. She shook her new friend, but he remained unconscious. He had a large laceration on his head and an injury on his leg that was bleeding. Lina cried. Her only friend is unconscious, it's cold and wet.
"Zachary! Please! I need you!" Lina cried.
Desperately, she rummaged in her backpack for her smartphone. She dialed 112. Nothing happened. Her hands start shaking. She dialed the familiar number again. Nothing happens again. The USA must have a completely different emergency number. What was on the fire station vehicles? Squad 3? Truck 81? But what's the phone number? Her father… If she called him, it would mean she couldn't run away anymore. However, Zachary needs urgent help and her father is the help. Lina dialed the number.
"Hey Lina, what's up?" her father answered.
"Ich weiß nicht was passiert ist… es gab ein lauten Knall und dann ist die Decke eingestürzt" Lina cried.
"Woah, slow down kiddo" Kelly said but Lina interrupted him, "Du musst uns helfen, bitte! Ich werde auch das tun, was du willst, aber bitte tu was."
"Lina, breath! And tell me slowly what happened?" Severide was now sitting tensely in the common room. He felt that Lina was in big trouble. He had never heard her speak so distraught. The first glances of his colleagues fell on him.
"Es ist einfach eingestürzt!" Lina explained, still crying.
Stella poked his upper arm nervously, "What happened?" she asked.
"Lina", Serveride said, "I dunno. She is crying, stuttering and talking in german." Suddenly all heads went up. The crew of the 51 looked at their lieutenant in alarm.
Stella took now his phone, "Lina? Stella here. Sweetie, can you explain to me what happened?"
Since Severide was already reaching for his smartphone, Stella put the call on speaker.
"Das Gebäude ist eingestürzt!" The whole team heard the 11-year-old girl's desperate voice. But no one had any idea what she was talking about.
"Maybe you can explain it in english? You know my German is pretty bad" Stella said.
She and Kelly tried to learn Lina's language, but they both gave up. It was just way too hard. Stella had even tried to learn German together with Lina.
"Ich brauche Hilfe! Hilfe! Bitte helft mir!" Lina cried but nobody understood her cry for help.
"Where are you?" Kelly asked, "Tell me please where you are!"
Nothing happened. All they heard was the little girl crying. Severide stood up desperately. Paced up and down the room. Something happened. His daughter could be in serious danger.
"Stella, can you please call Ms. Puckett?" Maybe the nanny was able to give them the information? Maybe there was just a little argument? Although Lina didn't sound like it at all. Nevertheless, he hoped that Lina was not in serious danger. Stella nodded.
"Lina. Listen to me, yeah? I need you to stay calm", Kelly said. Did she still hear him? Kelly wasn't sure anymore. Lina cried and the lieutenant's heart almost broke knowing that he couldn't help her.
"Try to stay calm. Whatever happens, we are going to help you", he explained, „Please, kiddo. Breaths with me… in and out… do it", Kelly ordered. But the child did not understand him. Did not follow his request.
"You know I am not mad at you for talking german, but I can't help you when you're not talking english."
"Help me!" Lina stated.
"Alright. Just say where you are and we are coming to help you!"
"Ich weiß es nicht!" Severide shook his head impatiently. Why is she not talking in his language? In the last few weeks she had learned a few words and phrases.
"Are you at home? Can I speak to Ms. Puckett?" Kelly asked, "Just say yes or no."
"No and no."
"Did something happen to Ms. Puckett?"
"No."
"But she isn't anywhere near you either", Kelly stated.
"Yes."
"Are you in the park near our home?"
"No."
"Are you still at school?"
"No."
"Are you outside or inside a building?"
"Inside."
"Can you go outside? Maybe there is a street name. You can send me a picture of it."
"No. Wir sind verschüttet."
"Kelly", Stella said, "I made some calls. Hermann helped me. Lina wasn't at school today and Ms. Puckett got the message Lina would be staying here tonight so she wasn't necessary."
"I haven't written her anything."
"It also looks more like the child wants to run away" Hermann stated.
"Obviously something bad has happened", Capp said, "Maybe she missed the plane or she is with a murderer." Capp earned glares from the whole team. Kelly doesn't like to think about that at all. Maybe there was a simple explanation. Maybe the got lost at the airport?
"I am calling Trudy. Maybe the police can help looking for her", Mouch said.
"Lina? Are you still there?"
"Yes"
"So you tell me that you are not able to go outside? Are you injured?" Kelly mentally imagined all scenarios of what happened. But the thought that his little daughter is injured and needs help and they don't know where she is made him feel helpless.
"What?"
"Are you hurt or bleeding?"
"Uh… I do not know. I think so, but I am okay. Zachary is not."
