"Did we get everything we needed?" Della's question was met with a nod as I was finishing the last checking for the resources we had finished buying and leaving at the manor.
A tropical storm was soon to hit the city, and everyone was scrambling to get everything needed to prepare for the disaster. Food, alternative sources of electricity, sturdy devices to guarantee decent illumination all over the manor, and even some old WW2 radios refitted by Gyro to handle modern frequencies. The scientist had been in a cranky mood between the upcoming storm and the fact that he lost his Time Tub somewhere while moving his new things to his underground base.
All was set to be quite the intense siege for the manor as this was reportedly the 'biggest El Pato Tropical Storm' in decades. As far as I knew about this sort of mess, things could really go poorly if we didn't keep away from the windows- after putting wooden planks on them to avoid any surprises. Launchpad and Donald were working on it, the latter keeping watch of the former as Launchpad had little clue how to hammer a nail to keep planks sticking to the windows.
Scrooge and Beakley were finishing moving around a few relics that it was best to keep away from causing issues during the storms and the kids were in their rooms. Either there, the library or in the basement- regardless of location, they were safe and away from potential danger as far as I was concerned.
Work was off as everyone had been sent home to prepare for the hurricane. Max and PJ had been quick to adapt and our boss was keen to not see any waste of lives for the sake of a few hours of work. So I was focusing entirely on this effort, making sure to minimize bad events from happening while we were there.
This was the first time I'd faced a disaster of this magnitude, and I couldn't help having this gut feeling telling me that something was about to go really bad.
"Everything's going to be fine!" Poe remarked while patting my upper back. "Come on, it's just a little bit of wind-"
"You know people die due to this kind of 'wind'? It's nothing like we have in Italy."
His beak opened-
"He's not wrong, it's fair to be a bit nervous during this sort of mess," Della agreed but then yanked at my arm as she took us back to the living room. "We're going to be fine. We have food, shelter, entertainment, and the kids are in a secure location."
Sounds ideal, right? Well, the TV was still on when we reached Scrooge and Beakley, with Donald and Launchpad almost done with fixing the plank-nailing chore when the news hit us with quite the interesting development.
"It would seem like the storm had taken an odd connotation as various individuals from the past have started to appear all over the city. Let us go to our special guest correspondent, Benjamin Frankloon- what?!"
That was the Duck version of Benjamin Franklin. Things were happening fast for sure and... I didn't waste a moment as we needed to get the kids back within our sight.
"We're getting the kids," I mumbled, as Della, Poe and I bolted out of the living room with that simple task at hand.
At that point, I didn't suspect a thing about the kids having anything to do with this mess. In fact, I thought this was some villains' doing trying to attack us during the hurricane. Rushing to their rooms, we found most of them empty... all except the one Dewey used for his talk show as we found the group all bickering while handling what looked to be a... bath tub.
Gyro's Time Tub.
"Kids!" I snapped, eyes narrowing as we rushed to get them away from that thing. The triplets tensed up and stared at us with genuine guilt and regret.
"Mom, Dad- we didn't mean to-" Dewey.
"We were just trying to get-" Louie.
"I was just out there for science!" Huey.
Webby was distracted in all of this, trying to keep focus on the device while Lena looked absolutely terrified as she was doing something with her magic with the device.
"D-Dad, I can't hold it." The panic was now doubled at that admission.
Papa Instinct was fully deployed at this as I tried to get to the tub, Poe and Della on my sides and we were so close to it... before a powerful magical surge struck us all. The powerful energy wave sent us flying and while I expected for us to be ejected back to the hall, we all fell down on some sturdy floor made of numerous stones.
My head was throbbing painfully, as if I got a concussion from that push and I could see the others struggling too as it was just me, Poe and Della. And two sharp lances aimed at us.
"Who are you? How did you get in the fort?!" An old-looking duck exclaimed while his minions were close to poke us with makeshift lances.
The old looking fellow was dressed as someone from the Napoleonic Era, frilly but not excessively, but still wearing a white wig that was common for important people. Looked a bit like Scrooge but... it was the wrong time period. A McDuck ancestor?
"Uh... friendly American people?" I managed to blurt out and I saw the old guy easing at that.
"You speak English and you are Americans, you say?" The elder remarked with some hope, then grinned. "I'll take all the help we can get against the nasty New Spain pirates and their nasty attempts to get our good ol' American settlement here!"
I frowned, looking at the others with a clueless look. Della seemed to pick up on what was going on.
"1790. Fort Ducksburg declared independence from Spanish rule to join America."
"And we shall win this independence despite the bad odds we have!"
Della's uneasy expression told me something else. Still, we stood up and we were given a crash course of what we had to wear and what we had to do as 'the Spanish were coming'. I was confused, still recoiling from what had just happened and slowly realizing that we had been sent back in the past with no way to go back.
We were given armor, Poe had a flintlock musket, I had only been given a lance & Della a cutlass before being pushed to the fort's entrance together with twelve more soldiers... standing in front of a fairly huge invasion force that was coming from the nearby beaches. My wide eyes were aimed at the situation and yet I turned to Della as she tapped at my side.
"Any ideas on what to do here?" She inquired, giddy for the fight but wanting to know already if we had a way out of this one.
And considering the situation we were in...
"We may have to... hold them off for some time."
"How long?" Della asked, sounding a bit tense despite the excitement as we were facing a lot more than we were prepared to.
That was a full fleet packing thirty or so ships, all filled to the brim with war-giddy soldiers planning to raise hell in town. Poe looked incredibly worried too for a moment as he knew as much as I did that there was no spell that could help us out of this mess. Worst outcome possible, we were stranded, best outcome... someone eventually got to us.
"For... as long as it is needed for someone to bring us back," I replied tensely, knowing that no magic in this world could handle this.
It had to be either Gyro or someone else that has the means to handle that sort of hurdle. Scientific solutions were required to solve this science problem.
"Brace yourselves, because they are coming. The first of many waves."
The Spanish-speaking sailors rushed forth, cutlasses and swords drawn as they tried to take the 'fort'. This may not be a hurricane, but at this point I would have preferred that disaster over this one. I wasn't looking forward to facing this, but at least here, I could use magic to help around and... I was glad that the kids were not around.
After all, things were about to get bloody after all.
AN
Timephoon is happening now... but it's a group idea from the kids rather than Louie trying to get rich fast. Something weird happened in an effort to give something nice to a friend, and it caused a bigger issue with a different outcome. Next time, we'll move back a bit to see how this went down from the point of Webby. She's a bit nervous because she is pushing around Lena on this topic.
This shall be a three-part finale with a single epilogue… and a cameo, as this mess is bound to gain the attention of a wanderer strolling the multiverse. Worry not, they will be familiar faces to some of the more knowledgeable readers.
