Noelle, Andy, Luke and Donovan hurriedly race toward the secondary location. All on edge as they are concerned about Sam.
"Shot fired! Shots fired," the radio blares out.
Noelle impatiently picks up her radio and speaks. "This is Alpha 1. There's an undercover cop in the building. I repeat, an undercover cop in the building."
Luke wipes his hand over his face as he becomes worried about Sam.
"Dispatch. I have one victim—GSV, shot in the chest," the radio blares. "Have responding units secure the building."
Luke takes a deep breath as the rest becomes garble in the background. He sends a silent prayer that Sam is okay. He didn't want to explain to his wife or daughter that he had died.
They pull up to the location and get out of the car. Donovan goes to find the officer in charge as Andy walks towards the yellow tarp. Noelle turns to find someone she recognizes, and Luke scans the crowd looking for Sam.
He is standing next to a patrol officer when he hears the radio go off again.
"We need a medic upstairs. Officer down," the voice belongs to Dov.
He then scans the crowd again for Sam and Gail. He only sees swarms and swarms of officers and perps being led into awaiting cars. He doesn't see Sam or Gail.
"McNally," Sam calls as he leans against a black Explorer.
Luke lets out a breath as he continues to scan the crowd. He moves towards Oliver. "Shaw, have you seen Peck?" he calls as he reaches him.
Oliver turns to look at Luke. He can tell the man is worried and replies, "not yet. However, she and Diaz didn't check in. Nash and Epstein went to go find them."
"Epstein requested a medic for an officer down," Luke reminds him as he looks around again.
"Shit," Oliver says as he tries to look through the crowd. "Um."
Luke mutters under his breath. He was so worried about Sam that he forgot to worry about Gail. He suddenly notices the paramedics bringing out a stretcher with Chris. Gail was following behind.
"Oliver, it's Diaz," Luke says as he moves to follow them.
"What?" Oliver says as he turns and follows him. "What the hell happened?"
They watch as the paramedics load Chris, who looks to have a stab wound to his lower abdomen. Gail got in behind him. They hear taking him to Mount Sinai.
"I'll let Frank know," Oliver says as he pulls out his phone.
Luke nods before pulling out his phone and dialling a number.
"Peck," Steve says after a few rings.
"Chris got stabbed," Luke says as he walks away from the crowd. "I'm not sure how long he and Gail were trapped, but she needs you."
"Shit," Steve says as he can hear him driving. "Is this with Donovan's bust?"
"I guess they were on surveillance but somehow ended up inside," Luke clarifies. "They are taking him to Mount Sinai. Gail got in with them."
"Okay, I'll take care of this and let Frank know as I know," Steve says as he mutters a curse. "What the hell went down tonight?"
"I'll tell you about it later," Luke says as he looks at the enveloping chaos. "I need to get back to work."
"Tell Uncle Donny I said congrats," Steve says before he hangs up.
Luke shakes his head as he turns. The loaded cruisers leave with their suspects. He sees Sam and a few guys chatting as the remaining rookies all stand together. He turns and notices Donovan standing in the crowd. Then walks over to him. The group has dispersed.
Donovan lets out a sigh after everyone disappears.
"You got your pipeline," Luke says as he pats him on the back. "Steve says congrats."
"Thanks," Donovan says as he looks at him. "What about the rook?"
"Stab wound, blood loss, but should make a full recovery," Luke says as they lean against the car.
"Gail," Donovan asks. He had noticed his niece following the stretcher.
"Physically, she's fine," Luke says as he looks at him. "The rest, I don't know. I sent Steve to her. He owes her from Bibby."
"True," Donovan says as he lets out another breath. "This could have been a lot worse. If McNally hadn't stayed behind."
"She did," Luke says as he looks at him. "Sam is okay. Chris will recover, and you stopped the largest pipeline of drugs from coming into the city. Take the win. We don't get wins like this very often."
Donovan gives him a look before pushing off the car and says, "don't forget who is the superior officer."
"Even the longest serving officers need a reminder to take the wins. Especially where they can get them," Luke says with a smirk. Before, he pushes off the vehicle and walks toward Sam.
Donovan only looks at him as he approaches Sam. He smiles to himself, knowing that Luke isn't perfect, but his daughter chose a good one.
"You doing okay?" Luke asks as he stands next to Sam. "You had us pretty worried. Especially a certain rookie."
"And you," Sam says as he looks over at the rookie. "Surprised you didn't storm into the lounge after I left."
"Noelle wanted to. Donovan was freaking out that his bust was about to be screwed, but you trained her," Luke says as he looks at him. "If you didn't think she could handle it, then you wouldn't have let her step in."
"True," Sam says as he smiles. "So she did well."
"She did good," Luke says as he looks at him. "I was worried. It was more about how I would tell Fay and Kay. They love you, and even at Fay's young age, she would not be upset to know you weren't okay. Donovan probably was thinking the same thing."
"I'll remember that," Sam says as he looks at him. "I knew that you guys had my back."
"She did," Luke says as he turns to see Andy with the other rookies. "A bit of advice. Anyone who will face being shot to ensure you are safe is more than only a professional partner. That is the person who you want by your side cause you know they will always have your back no matter what. Especially when they care more about your safety than the job."
"Previous experience," Sam says as he looks at him. He had heard about Luke's previous relationship with a fellow detective. It had ended because she cared more about the job than she did about Luke.
"Something like that," he says as he looks at him. "The reason that Kay and I work is that she has my back. It doesn't matter what part of my life is a mess; I know she is there. If you open your eyes, you may have found your version of it."
"I keep hearing that same advice," Sam says as he turns his attention back to Andy. "I think it is about time I take it."
"You should," Luke says as he notices Noelle moving towards their vehicle. "I don't think anyone is going to the Penny. They will be heading to the hospital to check on Diaz."
"Thanks," Sam says before he moves towards McNally.
Luke smiles as he moves and walks toward Noelle.
"Need a ride back to the division?" Noelle asks as she looks at him.
"If you don't mind," Luke says as they both get in. "Another one for the record books."
"The largest bust to date," Noelle says as she reverses the vehicle out of the parking spot. "Days like this, I love being a cop."
"We all do," Luke says as he leans back into the seat. "We made the world a safer place for everyone."
"Though the paperwork is going to suck," Noelle says as they drive toward the Division. "Think Diaz and Peck will get written up for not following orders."
"Who knows? That is way above my pay grade. I am happy that this one is over. Though knowing Donovan, he already has another major bust in the works. He never knows when to take a win and call it a day."
"Any idea who will be the next target?"
"No, and I hope he chooses another division to run his surveillance. This one was too close. It's a pattern with his busts. He tries to take down the largest targets but doesn't want help from other departments."
"Good point. I hope he chooses another division. Thought if he needs a long-term undercover, you know he will come for Sam."
"I hope Andy can talk him out of it."
"Please, they are both too blind to notice what is right in front of them."
"Don't I know it?"
