Kathleen smiles as she walks into the living room after her shower. She smiles at the sight of Luke and Faylinn playing with a bunch of brightly coloured rabbits. They were all different colours and sizes. They had decided that for this Easter, she would be getting toys instead of candy.
Elaine and Gail were getting her a bunch of new spring outfits. While Steve, Bill and her dad were designing a jungle gym for the new house. Sam was supplying an endless supply of bunny blankets and educational toys.
Faylinn's love of bunnies had caused a change in her room decor from Deer Floral to Bunny Floral. Her room at the new house was in the process of being designed. The keys were given to them a few days before, and the move was already in progress. They were bringing a small number of their things in this week, and they set the big move for next weekend. All their volunteers were assigned, and things were taking shape.
"Kay," Luke calls as he notices her standing against the kitchen counter. "Kathleen."
"Huh," she says as she is pulled from her mental planning.
"Are you still with us?" Luke says as he looks at her. "You okay?"
"Yeah, I'm perfect," she says as she moves to the couch and sits in front of it. "Happy Easter."
"Py," Faylinn says as she drops the toy and stands up. She's a little unsteady for a few seconds before holding her arms out for her mother. She lifts one foot before putting it down in front of her. After taking the third one, she fell into her mother's arms.
"Who took her first steps?" Kathleen says as she snuggles the little one close. "Did Fay walk to mama?"
Faylinn only smiles as she snuggles close to her mother.
Luke smiles as he finishes filming it on his phone. He looks at his girls.
"Is Dada joining us?" Kathleen says as she looks at him with tears in her eyes.
Luke smiles as he moves to sit down next to her. He wraps his arms around her shoulders and pulls both of them close to him.
"Dada is so proud of Fay," Luke says as he holds her close.
Faylinn smiles before putting an open-mouth kiss on Luke's cheek. She watches both of her parents smiling at her.
"What time do we have to be at Peck Central?" Luke asks as she looks at them.
"They set dinner for 6:00 pm, but everybody is arriving between 4:30 and 5:00," Kathleen says as she looks at the two of them. "I'd say we should aim for 4:30, as you know how Gail and my aunt get when they don't get extra time with Fay."
"So we have," Luke starts as he lifts his wrist and checks his watch. "So we have about six hours till we need to be there."
"Yup," Kathleen says as she looks at him. "What time do you have to be at work?"
"I don't," Luke says as he looks at her. "On my way out this morning, Frank told me that someone covered my shift. I was to spend the day with my family."
"Wonder who would do that," Kathleen says as she looks at him. "Hmm, Jerry or Sam?"
"Don't know, but I will remember to bring them all coffee tomorrow," Luke says. He looks over at the little girl who is falling asleep. "I think it is time for someone's nap."
"I think you are right," Kathleen says as she moves to stand with the little girl in her arms. "I'll put her down if you want to sleep for a couple of hours."
"That sounds like a plan," Luke says as he stands up. He kisses both of their foreheads before walking toward their bedroom.
Kathleen smiles as they pull up to her aunt and uncle's house. She turned and looked at Faylinn in her Easter outfit. It was a white body suit with gold lettering reading My 1st Easter. Above the letters, S&T is pink bunny ears, and next to Easter is a white Easter egg with pink dots across the middle. She also had a pink tulle skirt adorned with a gold bow and gold circles painted on it. It also had a pink headband with a gold bow in the centre. She also had on a pair of white leather walking shoes.
No sooner than Luke had put the car into park. Gail was opening the back passenger seat.
"Hi, Gail," Luke and Kathleen say with a smile. "Goodbye, Fay!"
Faylinn giggles as Gail takes her out of her seat and carries her into the house.
"Hi Fay," Steve says as Gail carries her past him. "I see my sister is at it again."
"When isn't she?" Kathleen says as she exits the car. She walks towards the back of the vehicle. "Are you working tonight?"
"Initially, no," Steve says as he grabs a couple of gift bags. "I volunteered to cover a shift for someone."
"Hmm," Luke says as he follows and grabs the rest of the bags. "Did you talk to Frank and take my shift?"
"Now, why would I do that?" Steve says as the three of them enter the house.
"Because you are you," Luke says as they walk through the foyer and into the living room.
"Anything is possible," Steve says as he drops the gifts with the others. "I see she hasn't given her up yet."
Gail only looks at her brother and sticks her tongue out at him.
"Behave," Elaine says as she swoops in and takes Faylinn out of her arms. "Who is our little Easter bunny?"
"Ma, me, me," Faylinn babbles as she looks at her.
Luke smiles as he watches the group interact with the little girl. He is too busy watching the girls to notice Donovan and Steve appear behind him.
"They are having way too much fun," Donovan says as he hands him a drink. "How was your morning?"
"It was good," Luke says as he looks at him. "Fay took her first unassisted steps this morning."
"What?" Steve says as he looks at him. "Do you have proof?"
"Of course," Luke says as he pulls out his phone. He clicks a few buttons while everyone turns to look at him.
"What is he doing?" Gail asks as she, Elaine, and Kathleen are standing together.
"Pulling up the video that he took of Fay's first steps," Kathleen says as she takes the little girl from Elaine's arms.
"What?" the two say before racing over to watch it.
"Family can be crazy, but they are ours," Kathleen says as she holds Faylinn close. "They will always protect us."
Luke smiles as he carries a sleeping Faylinn into their apartment. Kathleen places the bags down at the front door. She watches Luke brings the little girl into her nursery. She turns and walks into their bedroom.
She walks into their closet, pulls off her clothes and places them into the hamper. A sudden wave of nausea washes over her while she assembles her outfit for work tomorrow. She rushes to the bathroom and dry heaves over the toilet.
"Kay," Luke calls as he walks into their bedroom. "Are you okay?"
"Yup," Kathleen says as she moves to sit against the side of the tub. "I am fine."
Luke walks through their closet and into the bathroom. He notices Kathleen sitting against the side of the tub. He moves towards the sink, fills a glass of water and hands it to her.
"Thanks," Kathleen says as she takes a few small sips.
"You sure you're okay," Luke says as he looks at her as offers his hand to her.
She takes his hand before he helps her to her feet. "Dr. Johnston found something interesting in my bloodwork."
"Okay," he says as he pulls her closer. "Whatever it is, we will figure it out together."
"I'm pregnant," she says as she looks up at him.
"We can," he starts but stops and then looks at her. "Did you say pregnant?"
She only nods as she looks at him.
"Oh my," he says as he breaks into a huge grin and wraps her into a big hug. He lifts her off her feet and spins as his smile grows.
Kathleen's smile grows as she absorbs his pure joy, but the motion starts her stomach again. "Luke," she says.
Luke looks at her and sees her face before stopping and putting her back on her feet. "When did you find out?" he asks as he looks at her.
"The office had called Thursday," she says as she looks at him. "They could get me in two weeks. Lucky for us, we both have the day off."
"Okay," he says as he looks at her. "We are having another baby."
"Who knew house hunting could lead to another baby," she says before giving him a look of 'this is your doing.'
Luke smiles, leans down and passionately kisses her. He places his hands on her hips and pulls her close to him.
Kathleen smiles as she moulds into his body. She kisses him back as she thinks of another unexpected baby, but another welcome one.
