AN - Apologies for the delay.
Arizona was getting her blood drawn when the door to the ward slammed open, and Callie marched in. The nurse flinched at the sudden sound but continued with her task otherwise. Arizona raised an questioning eyebrow as she looked Callie up and down. Callie looked breathtaking in her peach coloured sweater and navy slacks. She couldn't recall ever seeing this woman in lighter shades of clothes.
"It's…I—I wanted to look motherly," Callie said as she palmed the cuffs of her sweater. "You should have waited for me before getting started," she added as she made her way inside and stood beside the blonde's chair.
"I just got here. We were just getting started." Arizona replied curtly.
The nurse looked up at the two brooding women with amusement, it looked like they were in love but it also looked like something was off….lesbians! She knew Callie personally, and also about her sexuality, as the owner of the clinic was good friends with the Torres empire heiress for years now. She was having a good day and she thought about taking these two women on board.
"So, , when was your last period?" the nurse asked as she put the vial with the blood on the culture stand and took out her tab.
"Ugh…I don't remember the exact dat—"
"Before Christmas!" Came in Callie's quick interjection; "So, 20th of December", she added after a pause.
"I see. So, are you guys sexually active? When was your last intercourse?" the nurse asked
Arizona's face flushed a crimson red as she looked up to Callie, who was equally flustered.
"You guys are sexually active right?" the nurse asked again as she looked between the two women
"Oh yeah!" Callie replied in an instant
"Totally" Arizona added, as her mind went back to the last time they were intimate….of all the times they were intimate. "Our last intercourse was two weeks ago," she added as she played with the hem of her blouse. She didn't know this appointment would pose such questions. Then again, she didn't know anything about being pregnant either.
"Two weeks? Why the gap? You know being sexually active increases the chances of conceiving?" the nurse asked as she again mapped the blushing women. Oh this was getting better and better.
Arizona's eyes widened as she looked up at Callie for a response. How do you answer that?
"I..uh…we..we were at opposite ends of the city. And we, uh, we didn't have much time" Callie replied hurriedly.
"There's always time!" the nurse winked, "Anyways, Ms. Robbins, how many tests have you taken?"
"Just one"
"Which brand?"
"Oh, umm…the one that's usually available at the stores? Its name was First Response or something? I don't remember exactly, as I was in a hurry. I was late so I just bought it and used it in the store's restroom." Arizona said as she tried to recall that day.
Callie looked at Arizona who had her eyes trained on the nurse. She looked so breathtaking in her floral, off-shoulder yellow blouse and brown skirt. There was a glow on her face that made Callie's knees go weak but there was also a sadness that made her heart ache. Arizona must have been so alone when she would have found out that she was pregnant.
The nurse typed the response on her tab and then looked up at the couple, "Those tests are never reliable and you only used one test, so we should wait and see what the official results are. I can't recommend anything else till we have the results"
And that was not what both the women were expecting.
"What do you mean that the test isn't reliable?" Arizona asked
"Are there any other symptoms? Nausea? Vomiting? Dizziness?" the nurse asked
"No." Arizona shook her head in response
"The off-the counter kits are not 100% accurate. I can only confirm if you are pregnant or not after we get the blood test results" the nurse added
"Does that mean I'm not pregnant?"
"It means we should wait for the results. Please come back tomorrow" the nurse said as she took the culture stand and left the room.
The two women remained silent for a while, both contemplating what to do or say next.
"Well? Say something Arizona" Callie asked as she went on to kneel in front of Arizona's sitting form.
"Well what? Whatever those results are, you shouldn't be bothered with the same." Arizona stood up and made her way outside, Callie hot on her tail.
The parking lot was just outside the nearest exit, and Arizona was about to key her car when she felt a warm hand grasping her wrist and spinning her around. Her breath got caught up in her throat as she came flush with Callie's tall frame.
"How many times would I have to tell you that you don't get to decide when you can let me in and when you can walk away. That's MY baby too!" Callie spat, her breath coming in hot bursts on Arizona's face.
"There's NO baby!" Arizona said angrily as she looked down and then looked up, feeling a bit hurt and emotional at what the nurse had said. Chances are, she might have burned her relationship down over a hypothetical baby. Of course she did it for herself. But she also did it to protect her baby.
Callie saw the colour rising to Arizona's face, her exposed neck, tingeing with a pinkish tint, her eyes turning a deep azure. She knew that look. She knows that look all too well, so she took a sharp step back.
"There's a baby in there, Arizona. You're pregnant!" she tilted her head to the side, a knowing look marring her face. How can Arizona even think that she isn't pregnant was beyond Callie's understanding
"What? You are a gynaecologist now?" Arizona asked incredulously
Callie took another step back and looked deep into Arizona's eyes. Her conviction, convincing the blonde momentarily but not completely. She threw her arms in the air, and said,
"You…..You are glowing Arizona! You are overly emotional. You are overreacting. You are being impulsive. You are getting aroused by my mere touch…you are so, so beautiful and you are so, so pregnant"
"I'm not aroused!"
Callie tilted her head in disbelief.
"I—I haven't seen you. It's just random" Arizona tried to lie but she knew she had been caught.
"It's not random Arizona!" Callie took a step closer.
"Okay. Okay. Maybe I'm hormonal. I'm late by a week now and that's probably messing with my body" Arizona said as turned around to enter her car. No matter how much she desires Callie, the truth is, they are not together anymore and it's the best for both of them.
"It's over Arizona!"
Arizona's hand stilled on the door and a chill ran up her spine. Over?
What does that mean?
Callie's already giving up?
So easily?
It felt like the wind got knocked out of her chest, making her tremble with the fear of the unknown. She turned around to look at the brunette, who was standing there oh so calmly. Not even a single fucking tear in her eyes.
"So that's it?" Arizona spat out, anger rising in her veins, and coating the words that were coming out her mouth; "YOU ARE GIVING UP ON US? You are not even gonna try? It's so easy for you, isn't it? I DIDN'T EVEN MEANT ANYTHING TO YOU…GOD I was so stupid!"
Arizona was getting madder the more she thought about it. How can Callie even do this to her?
"You were begging for me to stay not even 48 hours ago and now I don't even matt—" she was cut off with Callie invading her personal space, putting one hand above her mouth and another around her waist. Her eyes widened at the proximity but she was full of rage and madness so she kept on mumbling around Callie's hand, who then pressed the hand tighter to shut her off completely.
"I MEANT KIDNAPPING and SHOOTING, Arizona. It's over. We caught who was behind it" Callie said in utter disbelief. A small incredulous smile gracing her lips at Arizona's over reaction. Yep. Pregnant!
With that Arizona relaxed, melting against Callie's form, eyes still wide at her own reaction. "It was Edwards. She had a problem with me and she took it out on you. But we can talk about it later. Right now, please enlighten me first why you think so highly of me!" she could sense the mirth in Callie's question.
Arizona blushed, as Callie's hold loosened and they both took a step back.
"Why would you even think that I'll walk away? I'm not the one who ended things!" Callie accused, though inside, she felt a whole lot better knowing that Arizona hasn't given up on them….yet!
"I…uh. I don't know what to say" Arizona scratched the back of her neck thinking of a way to walk away from the impending conversation.
"Look…" Callie shifted on her heels, she has one shot at this, and she needs everything to be right, for it to work, "You may have got into trouble because of me. And I'm sorry for that. But you knew who I was from the very start. I can't stop things from not happening. But I love you, Arizona…and I'll do everything in my power to protect you. And I'm 100% sure I'm gonna love that baby and protect it fiercely. I'm not cut out to be a mom, Arizona…But you'll be a great mom, you'll be an amazing mom. I'm all the way in. Are you?"
Arizona stared at the truthfulness on Callie's face. Every word that came out of the brunette's mouth was full of sincerity and adoration. No one has ever loved her or wanted her so much in her entire life. But what if something worse happens? What if this time Callie couldn't be there to protect her.
The longer Arizona took to respond the more it hurt to even stand there. "Maybe you should take some time to think this through! I'll see you tomorrow." Callie added and then walked away, leaving a very confused Arizona at her wake.
Later that night, Arizona was sitting on the couch, devouring an entire bag of Doritos while watching Criminal Minds. She felt she could officially say she had the strangest life in the world. One minute she was living with her parents in a shitty apartment working overtime, the next she was under the ball and chain of a business tycoon. One second she's in London, the next she's cleaning brains out of her hair. And now she was in her pajamas watching a stupid show.
Truthfully, she was trying to do anything to take her mind away from Callie. But calling Lucia earlier that evening didn't help. She didn't tell her anything about the pregnancy but she talked with the woman for an hour straight, and felt so much lighter afterwards. Although she was so happy to hear her voice, once their conversation had ended, the loneliness set in even more. But speaking with Lucia made her feel closer to Callie in a way, especially since Lucia kept persuading her to get back together with Callie.
God, she wanted to.
She had barely been away from Callie, and she missed her like crazy. Maybe she had overreacted. Okay she had surely overreacted. Maybe she should have given Callie a chance. Callie did find her and save her life. That in itself should prove her love.
But a part of her didn't want to go through the pain and suffering that Lucia had gone through. Or the constant waiting that Lexie had to deal with. Arizona didn't want to live in hiding or be overly cautious and wary of every person who entered her life. Even someone just asking for the time. She didn't want to be scared all day, every day.
Arizona stared down into the empty bag right as she heard a knock at the door. Ellington, no doubt, coming to bring her dinner. But this time she would look through the peephole first, just in case it was Detective Avery.
"Yes?"
"Message for you, Mrs. Torres," Ellington said.
Arizona opened the door to find Ellington holding a silver tray with a rose and a card on it in one hand, and in his other hand a large silver bag.
Arizona grabbed the note, rose and bag. "Thank you," she said, shutting the door as she read the card.
'Don't think. Put on the dress. A car is waiting for you downstairs.'
Arizona's heart trembled. But what about the other night and—don't think! She was done fighting herself. She needed a break from the constant thinking. A pause. So she decided then and there that she was going to see Callie. She smelled the rose and exhaled. This woman made her crazy.
She quickly ran to the bathroom to shower, put on the dress and a little makeup and then went out of the door all in less than twenty minutes. She decided that she would listen to Callie more and not think about what she was doing. Sure her mind kept trying to tell her to run...run far away. But...her heart told her something much different.
As Arizona rode the elevator down, she giggled to herself to think of Alex opening her car door as he always did, and him driving her like he had done in the past to whatever location Callie wanted. It had been a while, but she tingled all over just thinking about it.
Once Arizona reached the front of the lobby, she pushed open the hotel doors and froze. An instant tingle coursed its way through her body. Callie was leaning against a fire red Lamborghini. Arizona had not been expecting that. Usually when Callie said a car is waiting, it was someone else ready to drive her to Callie.
But even from a few feet away, Callie was staring at her with this intensity that she had never seen in another human being. Like Callie was claiming her with just her eyes alone.
"Hello Arizona," Callie said, as Arizona approached.
Arizona's beautifully smooth milky white skin seemed to glow and the simple, short black dress she had provided for her hugged Arizona's delicious curves even better than she had imagined. Arizona was stunning, resembling the first night Callie had met her, when Arizona had been wearing a similar albeit, cheaper dress. There was a glow on Arizona's face that was making Callie tremble with the love and adoration she felt for this woman.
"Hi Callie," Arizona whispered back.
Callie was penetrating her soul with those piercing umber eyes of hers. Her short hairs were swept back into a small thumb sized ponytail, the black denim pants and the red hot shirt with few buttons open at the collar was giving a delightful view of the cleavage underneath. Add to it that Callie was wearing her leather jacket, and any guard Arizona had tried to build up in the short ride down the elevator had now crumbled. 'Talk about tall, dark and gorgeous...Callie's picture should be the epitome of that phrase,' Arizona thought.
"You're mesmerizing...as always," Callie said, drinking in Arizona's striking face, the cute dimples and of course the sexy body.
"Thank you," Arizona answered, but then started to feel self-conscious, because Callie continued to stare at her. She quickly glanced down at her dress and smoothed it out. She glanced back up at Callie, and she still wasn't saying anything, just gazing.
Callie finally shook herself out of her trance and opened the passenger door for Arizona . This woman...drove her crazy. "May I escort you to dinner?" she asked, when her brain was up and running again.
Arizona nodded to her, then quickly spoke up, "Yes." She got in and Callie gently closed the door.
When Callie got in the car, Arizona's nostrils filled with the ever intoxicating scent of Callie's perfume—a scent that made her quiver. She was still a bit flustered from their morning encounter and now just being this close to Callie, started flooding her brain with past memories of their hot encounters. Callie glanced over towards her and gave a small smile before she pulled the new car onto the street.
Neither one said a word while Callie drove them to their destination, but Arizona couldn't help but stare at Callie's profile. Even though it was dark in the car, the neon blue lights of the dashboard gave her a faint light. It was about the tenth time her mind had screamed, 'Calliope Torres is gorgeous'. She started to feel flustered again, just thinking about being loved by this woman. Arizona finally turned away and stared out of the window, to keep from embarrassing herself.
The further they drove, the more the streets began to look familiar, and before long Arizona recognized exactly where they were. She couldn't help but smile.
After a few more minutes, they pulled up in front of Callie's loft. When they got out, Arizona greeted Webber. He held the door for her and smiled brightly back at her. "Long time no see, Miss Arizona," he said. Arizona and Callie both greeted the aging man with a warm greeting.
Callie grabbed Arizona's hand and led her to the elevator. They both stared at one another on the ride up, but neither spoke a word. Almost 48 hours ago, she had a gun to her head. But now...it's as if that had never happened. The magnetic pull they had towards each other clouded out everything else.
Once inside the loft, Callie removed her leather jacket and walked to the kitchen. Arizona closed her eyes and breathed in the familiar place. So much had happened here, and it felt just a little strange to be back. But perhaps this time, strange in a good way.
Callie walked back over to her and handed her a glass of champagne. "I owe you a Mexican dinner, and I never go back on my word," Callie said, taking a sip from her own glass.
Oh, yes, Arizona remembered that morning. The morning Callie had promised her so many things and left her broken hearted.
"Yes, I think you do," Arizona smiled, and took a sip. "Want me to help with anything?"
"Nope. Just sit your pretty little ass down."
Callie rolled up the sleeves of her red shirt, washed her hands and started removing several things from the refrigerator. She cleared a space on the island in the kitchen. Arizona sat on the bar stool opposite of her, and observed. For someone who didn't cook often, Callie seemed to know exactly what she was doing.
"Callie?"
"Yes?"
"What am I doing here?" Arizona asked, leaning her elbows on the counter.
Callie was silent for a few moments before she spoke. "I have said everything I can, Arizona. The ball is in your court. But I'm also not gonna sit back and wait for you to make up your mind. Consider this a date."
"Date? Haven't been on to like hundreds of dates?"
Callie smiled, "While I'm preparing our meal, I'm going to give you an opportunity to ask me anything you want. And I'll be completely honest."
Arizona immediately perked up. There was so much she wanted to know about Callie. "Nothing's off limits?"
Callie exhaled. "Nope. You can ask me anything."
Arizona thought hard about what her first question would be. She didn't want to scare Callie off, so she asked a simple one first.
"Okay. I'll start off easy. What's your middle name?"
"Iphigenia," Callie stated as she chopped a tomato and added it to some spectacular chicken dish she was in the process of making.
"Calliope Iphigenia Torres...ooh, I love that." Arizona stared at Callie and noticed a small smile in the corner of her mouth, even though Callie wasn't looking at her. But now onto more burning questions.
"Did you sleep with that Heather girl the night you took her out?"
Callie looked up at her. "No, and I can't believe you even remembered her name."
"Well, it was a pretty devastating night for me. I remembered everything about it."
Callie grabbed some spices from a cabinet but didn't say anything. She placed the dish into the oven, poured another glass of champagne and leaned against the counter. "Next question."
"Hmm, what was your dad like?"
Callie glanced down at her glass. "He was a quiet man. But that was mainly due to the fact that English was only his second language. Mostly every time he spoke to us, it was in Spanish," Callie said, trying to figure out what to say about him. "He wasn't the most involved father, but that taught us to be independent. My mom was the only one who could really make him smile. That's about it in a nutshell."
"You look a lot like him," Arizona said, taking in that bit of information. It was the first time Callie had even mentioned her father. Everything so far that she had learned about Callie's family had been from Lucia.
"Yeah, I know," Callie said as she sipped her drink.
Arizona knew that this next question might hurt, but she really wanted to know. She wanted to know all she could about Callie, and not secondhand from someone else.
"What was your brother Bobby like?"
Even though she probably tried to hide it, Arizona saw Callie tense up at the question. Callie glanced down at her glass then back up to her.
"Arizona, I'm sorry. I know I said nothing is off limits, but can we hold off on that question?"
Arizona nodded. "Yes, of course. I'm sorry."
The next question, Arizona wrote down on a paper instead. She had learned a few things from Callie but she wanted to know more. 'How many people have you killed?' was scribbled on the piece of paper and she slid it towards Callie.
Callie just looked at her. "None"
"But—"
"These hands haven't killed anyone, Arizona. Sure people have got caught up in the middle of ugly gang wars and died because of me. But I haven't killed anyone"
Arizona looked down at the paper and then back up to Callie. "Ok," she whispered, as she tore the piece of paper up and threw it away.
"Okay, new question. When was the first time you cried?" Arizona recalled Lucia telling her that as a kid Callie never cried.
Callie chuckled, "This wasn't the brightest idea. Hmm, can I get back to you on that one also?"
Arizona rolled her eyes. "Yes." So much for the Q&A.
When dinner was finally ready, Callie prepared both of their plates, while Arizona set the table. It was a beautiful candlelight dinner and the food was amazing. Callie really could cook...or at least she could cook Mexican food. Lucia would be proud.
"This was delicious, Callie. Thank you," Arizona said, drinking the last bit of her champagne.
"Am I forgiven?"
"I was never mad at you Callie, I was just scared. Nothing like that had ever happened to me, and I didn't know how to react to it. I still don't," Arizona said.
"Then, what can I do to make it better?" Callie asked.
"You can start by telling me what you're thinking," Arizona answered.
"That's it?"
"Yep, just tell me what you're thinking without guarding yourself. Even if it makes you look vulnerable, I want to know."
"Alright. Stand up," Callie said, as she walked over to her entertainment system.
Arizona did as she was told, eyeing Callie cautiously as Callie flipped through a group of CD's. When she found the one she was looking for, she placed it in the home theatre system, and the smooth, romantic sounds of an old rhythm and blues song drifted through the air.
"Oh, this is a beautiful song, I've heard this before in a movie. Oh, What a Night, right? What's the group?"
"The Dells."
"I didn't know you listened to oldies."
"I listen to a little of everything. Come here," Callie whispered.
"You come here," Arizona teased.
Callie smiled and slowly walked over to her, grabbing her hand and gently pulling her to the living room floor. Arizona admired Callie's long, lean yet muscular frame underneath her red shirt and black jeans. Callie turned around to face her and flashed the most beautiful, megawatt smile. Her knees literally felt weak.
Callie pulled Arizona close to her body and started moving slowly with the music.
"Close your eyes," Callie softly uttered. Arizona glanced up at her for a moment, then obeyed.
"The night my parents met, this was the song they danced to. My dad had told my mom that night, in broken English, that he was going to marry her," Callie said.
Arizona kept her eyes closed as she thought about Callie's father and Lucia dancing. What a beautiful couple they made.
"He also whispered to her during the song what he thought their lives would be like. I would like to try that."
Arizona continued to sway to the music and listen to Callie's deep soothing voice.
"For whatever reason, our bodies crossed paths, and in those special moments, I lost my heart to you. And I'm sure I'll never get it back. But as long as I can hold you close..." Callie stated, tilting Arizona's head up toward her, as she slowly opened her eyes, "...then you can keep it. I love you more than words can express Arizona Robbins, and no puedo vivir sin ti."
Arizona knew her eyes were glassy, but she couldn't help it. Everything Callie had said to her caused goose bumps to caress her skin. Everything Callie had been telling her since the kidnapping has been chipping away at the walls she had built around her heart, slowly.
"Wha—what did that mean? The last part," Arizona asked.
"I can't live without you," Callie answered.
