CHAPTER 2
Canary was assigned to keep an eye on Robin for a few hours, Robin sighed with relief, if it was Flash he wouldn't even be able to get up from the couch without the man asking if he was alright.
(A/N: We can't blame Flash for that, if something happened to Batman's bird while he was taken care of, the sprinter wouldn't be able to escape the bat's fury.)
It was late afternoon, early evening and nobody knew what to do while waiting for the spell to take effect, that is, if it does. It was too early to organize things for the night so everyone was pretty bored.
Dinah filled out the reports on her computer that at some point appeared in the cave for her, thanks Bruce.
"This is so boring, how long until it takes effect?" Kid Flash moaned with his hands over his face as he sprawled on the couch.
"Technically we don't know if there's going to be any reaction, KF." Robin replies from across the couch.
His answer was another moan of frustration.
Aqualad shook his head in amusement. This two...
Megan appeared with a batch of surprisingly unburned cookies.
"Now that's a miracle." Artemis rose from where he sharpened his arrows.
Megan pouted at the comment but smiled when she was complimented.
"I think I'm getting the hang of it."
"I think that confirms it." Superboy held up the biscuit before eating it and Megan blushed.
Canary smiled at the exchange, but they were right, drooling on the mountain wasn't what she had in mind at the start of the day. Shutting down the computer, she got up to get a cookie too when she heard a startled gasp.
Running at a speed that would make Barry run after his money she finds herself in the middle of the kitchen, Superboy holding a glowing Robin.
''Superboy release him! Back off!" She yelled and the clone reluctantly released the younger boy, who flinched and got to his knees.
"Robin, what are you feeling?"
"I don't know!" The boy replied as he hugged himself.
Canary wanted to get closer but couldn't, Zatara had warned her about that, she couldn't because any external touch would make the pain worse. Looking at Aqualad she exclaims. ''Call Batman! Now!''
The Atlantean did not need to hear it twice and ran to the communications room.
"Robin!" She tried to draw his attention to her again, but he stopped glowing.
Everyone was silent for a minute as he got up.
"Is that it?" KF asked.
"I... I think so," the younger boy replied.
Before either of them could say anything, another light appeared, but this time it was five feet away from where Robin was standing.
It lasted five seconds and as soon as the light disappeared, a red-haired teenager fell to the ground.
''Ouch!''
She looked to be about fourteen, had red hair and a giant green face glasses that served as a mask as well. Her uniform was red, yellow and green, with a red tunic with green sleeves, green pants, black boots and a black and yellow cape. The symbol on her chest made it clear that she was also Robin.
The girl stood up, with her back to them. '' Okay who was the smart-ass who pulled the chair… '' She stops mid-sentence as she turns and looks at them and then into the cave.
"Are you okay?" Megan is the first to ask, but it seems to have had an effect on the girl, who immediately goes into combat stance.
''Who are you? Where am I?''
''I am Black Canary, of the Justice League. This is our covert operations team.''
''Liar, the league was forced to disband years ago. Only Superman is currently allowed.''
"Said the girl in a Robin costume," KF exclaimed crossing her arms.
"And since when do bats accept what is imposed on them?" The girl replied, her eyes half-closed.
This was worrying, Canário kept this information for later.
''Maybe in your world, but not here. You're on Earth 16. There was an attack and our Robin." She points to Dick. '' He was hit by a weapon from the multiverse. According to our readings, this links Robins from across the multiverse, Zatara, our resident mage warned us that other Robins could emerge. You are the first to appear.''
The girl looked back to the team and then to the room again before sighing and relaxing her body.
''Ok, I believe in you.''
"Really?" Artemis asked in surprise.
The girl nodded. `Mount justice has been disabled since the league was forced to abandon it. Plus, your technology is very futuristic, that alone is enough to know you're telling the truth." She placed one hand on her hip while the other adjusted her glasses.
"And what era are you from exactly?" a new voice asked.
The team jumped at the appearance of the dark gentleman, except for both the Robins and Canary.
Batman, Aqualad and Superman entered the room. Batman facing the newcomer.
The girl smiled. SMILED. For the bat. ''So that's how you were at the height. Nice.''
Superman raised his eyebrows at that.
''Answer the question.'' The bat repeats.
''OK boss. I come from 1977. I'm not sure which Earth though. You said this is 16 so we already have one less land to consider.'
Silence.
"Did I say something wrong?" The girl lifted one of her arms and hugged herself.
"No... it's just... you... WHAT?" Kid Flash exclaims. ''Seventy years! You are from the seventies!''
Robin was slack-jawed, the team not much better behind him. Even Aqualad looked surprised. As well as Super and Canary.
Batman recovered first. ''We need to ask you some questions. Zatara is almost here and he's going to need to chekup you."
"Alright boss," she replies, a little more confident. ''But before, what year are we in? By the reactions must be far away, when exactly are we? In the nineties?
''2011.'' Robin responds quietly and now it's the girl's turn to be quiet in shock.
''I am thirty years in the future?!''
"That's not your future, it's an alternate dimension," Batman responds.
''For me it's the future, yes, I'm in the two thousand years. That's pretty cool." She looks around the cave. She walks from the kitchen and joint room and points to the TV. ''Is that a television? Why is it so thin? I still can't believe it, I can't wait to tell everyone...'
"Robin," Batman calls out, hoping it will snap her out of her reverie. It worked, judging by the embarrassed look she gave.
''Sorry. Oh by the way, I think it's okay to introduce me. Since there's no way I can exist here. Past and all." She takes off her glasses and puts them on her head. ''I'm Carrie, Carrie Kelley. Nice to meet you." She looked at Superman. ''Not you, you I know. It wasn't a good first impression.''
"Excuse our manners." Aqualad took a step forward. ''I am Aqualad, Kaldur, this is Superboy, Conner, Miss Martian, M'gann, Artemis, Kid Flash, Wally and our Robin.''
The girl's smile returned to her face. ''Are you the first Robin? Or the second? Her smile seems a little strained as she says the second part.
"What do you mean with second?" Robin asks.
''It's definitely the first. It's nice to meet you." She walks over and shakes Dick's hand. Everyone notices she doesn't speak his name.
"Don't you know me in your world?"
''It's a long story, but in short, all heroes retired ten years ago, I have no contact with any other than Batman. You don't live in Gotham anymore, I don't know where you are in my world actually." She mumbles the last part to herself, as if she's just realized it. 'I'll have to talk to B when I get back.'
RECOGNIZED, ZATARA 12. (I don't know his designation, so I'll use this one.)
"I see the spell has taken effect." He exclaims to the living room upon seeing a female Robin.
"Question time, come with us." Batman turns to leave the room. Carrie runs after him, showing that she is used to it.
Superman, Zatara and Canário follow behind without saying a word to the team.
"What happened here?" KF yelled so the team were the only ones in the room.
"I'm not sure, that was weird." Superboy shook his head.
''Strange? Very strange! A female Robin! From the seventies! Seventy-seven! Does their story match ours? Because if it is, we're with someone who has lived what we've learned in the history books!'' Kid Flash started rambling fast.
'Shut up idiot, I can't understand you.' Artemis slapped his head.
''OUCH!''
Robin sat on the kitchen stool.
"Are you okay Rob?" M'gann asked.
''I am. Still a little bewildered by all this.''
'We'll just have to get used to it then, as it looks like more and more Robins are coming from here.' Artemis placed a hand on the boy's back.
"I have so many questions for her!" Wally exclaimed again.
"We all have Wally, but first we have to let the league talk to her."
"Does she agree to attend the sleepover?" M'gann asked no one in particular.
"Why don't we do movie night?" Artemis asked.
"I think it's better." Aqualad agreed with the archer. "We have several here in the cave and I think it would be a unique experience for her."
Robin looked in the direction where his adoptive father went. He wanted to be at this meeting, but he knew he had to trust Bruce with this. Sighing, he turned his attention to the team.
