I will post the next chapter on Friday, to make up for the delay!
Enjoy the reading!
CHAPTER 8.
''Thank you.'' BJ sighed after they walked away from the group.
''You were digging even deeper back there.''
''I know. You always tell me to watch my mouth.
''I guess there's a reason for that.
BJ nodded and the two walked in silence for a while.
''So... is it true?'' Robin asked.
''What?
''You are his son?
''Yes, but so are you! I mean, the adoption really makes no difference, the dynamic of you two is unique both as father and son and as heroic partners, the best partnership in my world. Now you and I are trying to get to the same dynamic and...''
''BJ, mouth.''
BJ fell silent and raised his head with a groan of defeat. ''Sometimes I wonder how I became Robin...'' He mutters to himself.
''Yeah, I guess the other me has a lot of reasons to keep reminding you.'' Robin agrees with a smile, earning a shove from the other boy.
"Shut up.
They both laugh.
''So I'm your Batman? Cool.''
"You want to be Batman here?
''Yes! Why? Didn't he want to?
"He did, but... it was hard for him to stop being Nightwing. He misses it sometimes. He had to leave the Titans, you know? His attention is now on Gotham and the League, even though he keeps in touch with his friends, it's weird for him.''
''I... imagine.'' He stopped in front of a door. ''This is it.'' Robin opened it and the two entered.
The room was just like the other rooms on the mountain, undecorated but furnished, a dormitory. The only difference was that instead of a bed, there were two bunk beds, one on each wall. There were lockers on the side of the door.
''We don't know how many Robins will come, so we set this up temporarily.'' Batman explained, startling both boys.
"B!" "Dad!
Bruce cracked a small smile at that. (And rare too, Batman doesn't smile while he's wearing the hood.)
''Carrie will be at the front door. Zatara expressed her concern that there are more female Robins, if we need to, we'll set up another room if more people come.''
BJ yawned.
'''I can still fight' can't I?''' Robin smiled.
''Okay, I get it. Good night.'' He climbs into the nearest bed and passes out before he even lays his head down.
The dynamic duo shake their heads and leave the room, turning off the light and closing the door on their way out.
''You followed us from the beginning didn't you?'' Robin asked.
''We need to talk.''
Robin nodded and they both entered the younger vigilante's room.
''Talk about?'' Robin asked, throwing himself on the bed.
''Get your boots off the blanket Dick, it's not because we're not at the mansion that Alfred's rules shouldn't be followed.'' Bruce took off his hood and sat on the end of the bed.
His son sighed and pulled his boots off the covers.
''Now...''
''Superman is going to talk to Superboy. After training, so we are still on the mountain.'' Bruce interrupts.
Dick stares at him in confusion, his face slowly turning to joy. ''Good! What happened?''
''Carrie happened.''
Dick laughed. ''She's been here a day and has done more than we have in months!''
''Yes...'' Bruce agreed. ''And that leads to another thing she said.''
''About the Robins in her world? B I'm a detective too and I know you better than anyone. What happened?''
''Before anything, I need you to know that you can come to me. No matter what, besides promising me that you will tell me where you are when you go out on some mission.''
''B...''
''Promise me.''
Dick stares at him, joy turning to concern, and the boy takes off his mask. ''Okay B, I promise. What's up?''
''Something about a ban, about him being treated unfairly, probably like a child. He went out to prove something, that's what I can deduce.''
''So she didn't exactly say...''
''He was caught by the Joker.''
Dick widens his eyes, ''What?''
''I don't know how or why, but he went. And we'll probably meet a version of him soon, his name is Jason. Canary and I want to talk to him and Carrie to save that version of him at least. But that's not why we're having this conversation.''
''That's why you locked yourself in the cave yesterday.'' Dick exclaimed.
''Alfred told you, didn't he?''
Dick nodded.
Bruce sighed. "I want to make sure you know that no matter what, you can trust me, you can come to me even when you think I'm wrong. I...I was always scared to death of losing you, and now I've seen that some version of me has lost a Robin and I don't want that, I want to protect you...and the next Robins too.''
Dick nodded again and reached up to hug his foster father, who returned the hug.
''We're not going to let that happen here B, to anyone.''
Bruce hugs him tighter. Dick was right, it wasn't going to happen there.
''I'll talk to the league about including you guys in more missions once this is over.''
''Really?
''Yes, it's past time we trusted you more. However...''
''We should call you if it's too much for us.''
Bruce nodded.
That ... was more than he thought he would be able to say.
Dick was impressed with how open Bruce was being, maybe this spell had its advantages besides messing everything up.
''You didn't tell me what you found out about the two of them, I mean outside of that.''
"Don't you have any training?
''I have training every day. And if anyone asks I was with my mentor, having secret conversations related to Gotham.''
Bruce shakes his head at his partner's mischief and begins to recount the reports of both of them.
''We still haven't figured out which Earth Carrie is, we took the readings to the Lanterns...''
Dynamic duo indeed.
