"Didn't Aki come here on a helicopter?" Jack demanded, arms crossed in an royal huff as he stared up at the slender silver dragon before him. In the quietly approaching evening, the dragon looked a bit more pink with silver motes of starlight drifting about him. The consequences of his scales and the time of evening.
"Do I look like I can fit in one of those?" Stardust asked good naturedly before shaking his head. "No we flew together," he explained, before cocking his head to the side a touch. "Something the matter?"
"Shouldn't you be trying to keep Aki under control? She nearly killed a few people," Jack snapped back instead, as he tried to stifle the grief that wanted to take hold, earning a startled blink from the dragon.
Stardusts' face couldn't manage the true 'grimace' expression that he would have liked, but he lifted up his hands to study them all the same. "Well I guess I need to calm Rosie down," Stardust commented before he stood up. 'Well that explains Arch's odd question, and here I was hoping the girls had settled down from our flight here.'
He leaned over and dipped his head into the building, where, yep Rosie was trying to turn... The place was as trashed as Stardust expected. The hole she had created revealed walls knocked akimbo bodies propped up by roots and vines. While Aki herself was with that red head bird, working their way over the sagging roots. Leaving him to sigh shaking his head, "Try backing up all the way out Rosie..."
"Are you suggesting that I'm fat?!" Black Rose Dragon snarled as she snaked her own head around and glared a few bastard swords at Stardust.
"No, I'm saying Aki's going to fall into the bottom floor if you keep standing there forcing her to the extra work..." Stardust answered perfectly cowed by Black Rose.
"You're saying I'm fat..." Black Rose growled darkly.
"You both have a strange fixation on dangerous females," Jack pointed out in annoyance as Stardust backed himself up. It was an awkward movement as the dragon was clearly holding something in his right hand... err claw... paw?
"We like spice in our females, unlike a certain someone who prefers idol worship," Stardust retorted.
"Stardust!" a familiar voice snapped from the dragon's closed hand.
Jack had to check himself before his eyes darted up to see if his ears were right. Stardust was standing there opening his hand to reveal Yusei struggling into a sitting position on it. The guy dressed in his street clothes, and here out in the desert. While Stardust, for his part, was holding Yusei up high enough that the pair were now engaged in a staring contest.
"Yeah! I gave Yusei the antidote before I went back inside," Crow reported cheerfully as he finally stepped outside of the building. He was escorting Aki who was swaying slightly while her dragon was fully a spirit once more. Walking through the remains of the wall as a hologram would. Only to see Jack glaring barely restrained fury that demanded clarification... "You said you knew!" he countered in defense.
"I knew that she came here on a helicopter!" Jack retorted as his brain stayed in its hamster wheel of stubbornness. Only to have both Crow and Stardust retort in mounting frustration 'What helicopter' at him. Internally grumbling, even as he was elated to see Yusei here and still alive at this hour he finally barked out. "Fine, explain what happened if there was no helicopter!"
"Seriously?" Crow replied with a sigh.
The box weighed heavy in his arms, Their importance due to not just Yusei, but to everyone else who might become victims of the Movement not lost on the redhead. The late afternoon light showed only the wide empty expanse with Neo Domino not visible to the teen. A taunting reminder that no matter how fast Crow drove.
Yusei was dead. By now he would have been placed in isolation and given a painless injection in an attempt to keep this new virus of the Movement from spreading...
Tearing his gaze from that lonely horizon, Crow turned towards BlackBird, only to find Stardust Dragon patiently sitting next to it. Such an odd thing to discover it forced Crow to stop in his tracks as he stared up at the orange eyed dragon. Guilt in facing the dragon made him raise the box up in his hands to show the silver dragon. "Hey look! I got the meds for Yusei!" He explained before he started quickly walking to his ride.
Those long fingers suddenly caged his Bird, the long talons plunging into the ground. The sharp crack of the foundation buried under the sand barely muffled by the self same sand. Confused Crow lifted up his head to look up at the dragon before shaking his head. "I know I'm not going to make it, but at least let me try to save Yusei!" he pleaded.
In answer the dragon lowered his right hand his fingers unfurling to reveal Yusei laying there. He was curled up in his regular battered clothes, shivering so badly that Crow could see from where he stood...
"But he was here. I suppose Stardust could explain to you better than me, since I couldn't hear him speak," Crow finished with a shrug. "I gave Yusei the antidote and he sent me back inside to look after you guys... Soo feeling better Yusei?"
Yusei gave a slight nod, "yeah, thanks Crow its making a difference."
"You sure that isn't from how Aki says 'hi'?" Stardust suggested only to get Yusei to grab his nose with an annoyed expression on his face.
From the corner of his gaze Stardust noticed Jack staring up at him expectantly... "Oh I'm sorry, my turn?" He asked as he gently put Yusei down. "I can't stay any longer, let Crow know that Aki and Yusei are exhausted, but that's all." He explained as Yusei tried to get down as well.
The Turbo Duel King stumbled as Jack power walked forward as though his knee jerk reaction at the sight wasn't the motivation. Yusei tried to catch himself but he ended up on his knees. "Aki decided that she didn't appreciate the fact that you both left her behind."
"Wait... So you want us to do 'what' again?" Stardust asked, wishing that Rosie would pause and not just pick up Yusei.
"Jack and Crow have left to get the antidote for Yusei. There's no way they're going to get it and back in time on Crows' D-Wheel. So I'm taking Yusei there," Aki explained patiently, while Rosie's vines carried Aki up behind her neck. Aki's shoes weren't great for dragon back riding, but her stubborn nature got her up on Rosies' back in the end.
"Soo... why not get a plane or something..." Stardust suggested floundering as Rosie's wings opened.
"Because this is faster, I just take Yusei, get him his shot and bring him back," Aki replied. "Sure I might get scolded, but Yusei will be alive so it will be fine."
Black Roses' wings beat the air as she began to ascend, leaving Stardust to watch as the dark colors of the dragon would cause her to get lost easier in the night sky. Clever enough to avoid detection as the dragon and humans left Stardust behind..
He laid down for a moment in quiet disbelief and resignation, just watching them soaring in the air above... 'I think this counts as kidnapping, senators' daughter or no... Or maybe they can just call it a failed elopement. Humans still have those things right?' It was safe for him to soar, he was still in the Duel Spirit world, unseen by the humans. So he opened his wings and lifted himself up off the roof and took off after the pair.
There had to be a saner, more rational way to handle situations like this... But apparently those weren't good enough for Aki. 'Then again this is Yusei's fault. He could have just refused to put on his clothes. I don't think she'd be aggressive enough to put on his pants if he defied her,' Stardust thought to himself.
Over the hours when dawn started approaching, Aki had summoned Stardust fully into the human world and had Black Rose deposit Yusei in the silver dragon's hands. Thus he carried the pair all the way to the building out in the middle of the desert...
'I... think I'll stop there...' Stardust, decided letting his story come to an end. Jack had helped Yusei go to the BlackBird, letting the duelist sit with it serving as a backrest. With Aki walking after them, her robes keeping her warm as she settled next to Yusei. More over her presence would serve as a second source of warmth for him. While the rest of the story was just listening to Yusei and Aki talk about her absence and what she could recall. Things that the pair could discuss at their own discretion. "Aki needs a break, she's been pushing hard all night and through the day... As for Yusei... You might want to think of a good explanation..." he faded from sight leaving only a quiet, "There 'shall' be questions..."
Above them the sky was turning into shades of vivid red and edged in royal purples. It stretched from one horizon to the other while the sun continued to descend. But it was incredibly beautiful in that moment. Sweet release from the panicked desperation to do the impossible allowed them to soak in the evening sky.
Panic and despair drained into the sand letting Crow and Jack sink into boneless relief and just take a moment to enjoy the moment. "So... you going to tell me what Stardust said?" Crow finally asked as he gazed up at the sky.
"Aki showed up at my hospital room a little upset that you weren't there," Yusei answered quietly. The low moan of the evening wind made it harder to hear some of Yusei's words, but it was there. Tired and a bit shaky, but Yusei was there, "the doctors told me all I needed was the injection... Well a series of them, but the first one would keep me from being a threat..."
"How?" Jack interrupted, "how did you just find out that you needed a shot when we got told you were going to die?"
"A whistleblower, I can't say any further than that. Because if they get found out they'll likely be killed," Yusei explain.
It startled the pair into turning to look at Yusei, Aki had fallen asleep, her head resting against Yusei's shoulder and he was fairly resting against her as well. The cloak of her robe was pulled over so that it rested on his lap. "When Aki found out she forced me to get dressed then snuck me up to the roof. From there she carried us first by Black Rose Dragon, then swapping over to Stardust. The doctors said that I just need several injections. In her presence no less, so there was no way for me to change her mind."
"Man that's a relief, oh!" Crow turned to face Yusei, "actually we got some things we can tell you. Like someone kidnapped the Movement and did something to them. But more importantly, we found Kiryu!"
Yusei's eyes were shadowed by the darkness at his back, but that didn't stop the pair. "He's in the nearby town, Crash Town, working for a theme motel owner. We told him we would come back there to let him know how everything went." Jack explained, his confidence and pride back firmly in place now that he knew everything was going to be ok.
"Yeah, he wanted to come with us, but that couldn't happen. He had to work and the BlackBird is only so big," Crow elaborated.
"I see," Yusei replied quietly, his words stolen by the darkening sky. "And Movement?"
"Weird man, they were all normal then suddenly this portal seems to have sucked them into the ground for a time." Crow answered, a shudder in both his tone and in his physical reaction. "There was a security set up in one room. So we were able to see it happen."
From there Crow, and Jack, began recounting the eerie tale of Isao's sudden disappearance and change in demeanor. How the other members behaved and even the building becoming a labyrinth that had been keeping Crow from progressing with the antidote. With Jack taking over to explain how Archfiend had gone to eliminate some source of darkness in the building.
By the time the pair had gotten finished explaining their adventures, the sun had finished setting leaving only a star filled sky above them. Enough stars that Crow was taken aback and let Jack take over talking while he just observed the sky. Little light from Crash town meant that there was less light pollution. 'Where are they back in Neo Domino? This is gorgeous!' he thought as his eyes drifted from one edge of that heavenly dome to the other.
"Someone should call Kiryu... Cuz you're about to make 3 trips back to Crash Town tonight," Jack finally announced. He didn't need light to hear the exhaustion in Yusei and Aki was already asleep. But he also knew they couldn't be found here with a destroyed building by Security, Jack 'refused' to get a Mark.
Crow got up, brushing loose sand off his pants as he made his way to the BlackBird while Jack pushed himself to his feet. It was so easy to just rest, let Crow carry Yusei back to town and then them, he could just lay down and take a nap. But no, they needed some place safe to wait, someplace away from this ruined building out in the middle of no where.
And he needed to call Carly.
"Ummmm eight missed phone calls, one from Carly, two from Martha and five from the twins..." Crow announced and sounded worried.
As he should be!
"Jack you talk to her. I need steady nerves to drive," Crow instructed as he backed away from the BlackBird like it was going to just transform into a mecha Martha and start scolding!
"Grow a spine!" Jack growled, but he stood up and made his way over to go through the messages.
"Big brother, Big Sister Aki and Big Brother Yusei aren't around... Is... is everything ok? Call us back... Bye..." Ruka's young concerned voice and worried expressive face just made Jack feel like a jerk that she was being made to worry.
"So I'm over at little Patty's and here trots over the twins, looking like the saddest pair of puppies I have every seen..." The next call from the same number did not show the innocent expressive faces of a twin Signer. Rather Martha appeared, unimpressed, unamused, her tone one of utmost disappointment.
"Lord in Heaven, blessed be thy name, PLEASE DON'T LET HER KILL US!" Crow pleaded as he dropped to his knees and started praying.
"Its a 'recording' you dumbass!" Jack snarled, his voice cracking just enough to reveal that he was also a little concerned. Just a little. He struggled to keep the confident posture as the rest of the calls from the twins number were her. Yet it was the last one, that started with 'Now I know you think that because you don't live under my roof anymore that makes you adults. But I'm in a condo with a pair of children. 'Children' who are alone and worried sick about Yusei and trying to hide it bless their hearts...'
'She's taking our D-Wheels from us.' Jack mentally bemoaned as the whole message turned into one long dressing down of disappointment and disapproval from Martha.
"You ever wake up from a nightmare only to find out its real?" Yusei half joked as he listened to the sound of Martha's anger. Her anger, even Aki's anger was an incredible comfort to him as he sat there. He could smell Aki's shampoo and the soft scents of the desert and while the guys were almost comical in their fear of Martha. Yusei could only relax further.
Her voice reinforced her concern and served as a vocal reminder that they weren't cut loose just because they left. A voice that echoed gently to Yugi who had settled to sit down on the other side of the BlackBird. Quietly he turned his gaze up to the sky, natural darkness all around and only the faint essence of corrupted darkness. While on the other side of the self same BlackBird...
'Trueman's been here too...' he thought in quiet disappointment. 'You were supposed to protect these realities Seto. But the rivers are becoming increasingly contaminated, at this rate the roots will rot out completely. We can't keep performing your duty, we're becoming the harm not the help here.'
Only Seto couldn't hear him. Seto, like the rest of his circle was sleeping while keeping his power restrained. Yugi watched the Momentum scarred land before him, how much had the world been warped because the future was reaching back?
