Hopeless... it felt hopeless, this 'Yugi' was staring at her with a dispassionate expression and she was floundering. Worse yet the world clearly had stopped for this Yugi, an unnatural silence surrounded Her. Everything muted, frozen with only this unamused woman staring at her. Asuka had made speeches before the student body, rallied her classmates in sporting events. But now the words were stuck in her throat as she stared at this coolly, unimpressed 'version' of the original Duel King.
"I just want..." Asuka's voice cracked as she tried to find words. "My two oldest friends have scars that... they're burning in ways I don't understand, marked in ways that fire shouldn't work, my duel spirits. They got wiped out... I'm out of my depths and I'm desperate to help them."
This 'Yugi' sat there and let her vision go double studying the time stream and going back to see the moment of the attack. The Yami of this Duel Spirit world was starting to tilt off balance, mingling into a sick gray from a corrupted Light that was integrating itself.
"I am perfectly capable of making you be aware of how selfish and thoughtless your prayer is." The Female Yugi replied flatly, "yours is a time line where there are no longer electric or gas bills, yet there are still people born into abject poverty. Murder still happens, rape still happens, human trafficking, mental disorders, cancers, people who are ostracized for their race or sexual identity or religious beliefs. And yet you think that just because you know how to reach us. That you have the right to to ask for boons that people far more deserving of you don't have access to?"
Asuka's mouth fell open, the world blurring in her vision until the woman was nothing more than swirls of darkness with hints of color. The edges of her eyelids itched with guilt as she buried her face into her hands. "I... I'm sorry..." It was small childlike and pitiful, a whimper.
Then she grew still as the world..
"Kara, what are you doing here?" One of her counterparts appeared, his clothes Middle Eastern casual for his reality, his skin as dark as when they ruled their Kemet.
"The best I can." She smirked as she leaned back in her seat.
"We shouldn't... its not right to influence the time lines," he argued as he leaned against the bed the frozen Asuka sat on.
"Says who? The people who abandon us because they can't follow basic instructions? No, I'm done with these emo pretentious kids." She retorted before rolling her eyes and brushing her hand against her collar. "Yeah yeah I know. Look, he's out of control, he hasn't gotten his shit together and its been over 30 years of his time. His kill count spans time lines, not just the lives he kills directly but all the future potentials that he wastes."
This male Yugi, sighed as he looked down. 'She's not wrong...'
"Not all of his counterparts are like him, they can..." Fuwad tried despite knowing how it could be trying to sway her. The very weight of what he had seen dragging him down.
"Can what? They can do absolutely nothing because we keep our hands off and their fucked up counterpart just keeps going. 'And' has copy cats now who thinks its a good idea! No, we need to start manipulating the field or we're going to be stuck staring at nothing because there won't be time lines to watch." Kara fairly glared at her male counterpart.
"I want to say you're wrong, but... we know their possible moves given the current situation of this world."
She leaned back and stared seemingly at the ceiling, but was actually beyond that. "Put the mad dog down like he should have been the moment he started going off the rails. We need to get this reality to 'call back their Yugi' and once that's done he can send them into the time stream proper and deal with that dog."
"Do you plan to give them abilities? I mean the child here is a good hearted and nice girl, but we've seen her potential. She and the others are sorely limited, giving them access to the Duel Spirits could be more harm than help in the long run." He pointed out and got a nod of acknowledgment.
"Yes, and even doing this will splinter their reality to create alternate possibilities..." She growled as she dragged her nails down her arms in annoyance. Red marks followed down the nails, "And we won't know the new outcomes until this moment resolves itself."
"Time to play the game, no?" He asked quietly, and as hard as he tried to 'sound' apprehensive there 'was' a thrill to his voice.
"Its been a long time, and the brat needs to be reminded why we are the kings and queens of the universe."
"What's done is done, I just hope there's something that can be saved after this..." He said and disappeared, releasing Asuka back into her conversation with the Goddess once more.
"Negation of reality, your timeline is being, well neutralized," Kara finally explained before pushing back her blond bangs.
Asuka blinked a frown at the seriousness of the term. "Forgive me, a 'Negation of reality'?"
"'Someone' has been eliminating time lines through various methods, they've been..." Kara sighed and shook her head. "I will bring back your spirits, and if you can get my idiot cousin here you can bully him into healing your friends. But only on the condition that you deal with this."
"Uh... fix a 'negation of reality'? Us?" Asuka blinked as she began to pale, "Umm isn't that what the Crimson Dragon is about?"
The smirk she got was 'not' reassuring.
"No, the Crimson Dragon and those bound to its service exist to deal with threats that are not man made. This negation is a by product, half of it is man made, the other half is invasive. You and your friends deal with the man made problem, the dragons deal with the invasive part."
"But we're not like Aki, we don't have powers... how should we possibly deal with this?" Asuka asked in desperation.
'Ha, she is actually thinking about accepting it if she's pondering this...' Kara thought pleased. "The way the Darkness gained its strength was by people losing hope. The world needs hope, I am aware that you don't have any power to fight. But that doesn't mean 'none' of you lack power. Just support those who can and would fight. You just need to give those lost to their own darkness a light to follow."
Asuka could kind of see what the woman was saying yet her mind trembled at the weight. "But what about my friends, the fire is eating through their skin, their muscle... The damage to Momoes' head has blinded her eye and if her head..." The image came back unbidden the way the skin sizzled and shined to start pulling back and revealing muscle and skull...
"Fight for them."
"How can you fight when your muscle is melting off your body?" She asked growing frustrated at the fairly flippant answer. Asuka wanted to get angry yet the moment she thought back to seeing how they looked...
"If you can fight, you might be able to reach the Yugi that comes with your reality. His version of our cousin can heal your friends." This Yugi explained calmly, "But I am only willing to go so far, as I said. The Crimson Dragons' responsibilities do not cover the actions of people only those above humanity."
But Kara finally 'did' turn to look at Asuka and found herself pondering all the same... "Find the aid of a healer spirit, if she can bond with one and bring it into her deck they can stave off the effects of the fire with Aki's routine assistance. At least until a long term solution can come up." 'She is right, the flesh is magically damaged, she can't wear anything to protect those injuries either, neither of them can... Its just going to stick to the fabric and peel off.'
"Will us just being a cheering section be enough?" Asuka asked, confused as she tried to think how 'being supportive' could help.
"Prayers have powers, so yes. Also if you're willing to support someone who 'is' fighting they can then have access to your duel spirits," Kara explained.
"But our spirits... Tutu... Blader..." Asuka pointed out as the memory of the screaming of her spirits began to tear back into her awareness from the back of her mind.
"I can make copies of your duel spirits, and those who have to fight the threats can while you support them," she replied with a faint shrug. She turned back to her seat and walked from the bed, revealing the black weave of the lace in the corset was of daggers. Her hair was long and flowed down her back, flowing as the woman turned.
"Copies? I get that they're cards, but they're special to me, I don't want 'copies'..." Asuka argued and watched as that black edged hair swish side to side.
"You don't get a choice, if I remove them from the moment before the attack happens, you die. The alternate realities where you never even showed up don't know about their spirits. But I would be stealing spirits from still living alternate versions of you. The ones where you still went? Either you 'and' your spirits die, or they die, there was no other option. All the possibilities played out that way."
Asuka sat there stunned before she brought up her knees and buried her face into her knees. "If it means saving my friends from this misery. I'll do it... I'll do anything. I've failed my brother, my friends I have to make up for this..."
"That's a noble intention, but you better get some control over it, that's how people get destroyed. Making a mistake, and wanting to make up for it is noble, and can be hard and time consuming and even then. You might not ever get their forgiveness. But there are always people who will find you in those moments of despair and offer you a quick and easy fix and that's when you're up shits creek without a paddle."
"Isn't that what you're doing though?" Asuka asked with a weak, smile as she turned her head to look up at the woman.
"HA! What have I offered you that is 'easy'?"
\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\ The Spirit World \\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\
Witch flew into the portal and whirled around in a swirl of the ruffles of her dress, arms stretched out in welcome. "I know this isn't a true 'social visit' but all the same, welcome to my home world. Welcome to the world of Duel Spirits!"
Stepping through the portal, not looking for a connecting portal and only observing the world around her. It was a moment that Aki found herself in awe of. The portal wasn't the same one and the location was different, just a field of vibrant grass and flowers. It was earlier than it was on earth, with the sky a lovely bright blue.
Yugi made all of this.
Less than one century ago, Yugi brought this world into being, then somehow placed it in a different point 'in time' so it could evolve with earth...
The soft spring breeze ghosted over the grass, lightly tickling Aki's bangs as she looked about to get her bearings.
"Aki why are you sad crying? Don't you like this world?" Witch asked as black thorn bushes started to rise up around the Rose duelist.
"Oh its not the world... I just... It just struck me how this must have been the world the gang saw when they came here... And it ended so horribly.."
Witch winced at the pain in Aki's voice even as the other spirits bobbed their petals or stems to indicate they understood.
"Then let us BE OFF!" a voice shrieked from the ground, sending rumbles under Aki's feet before a large wine red root rose up with darken petals unfurling.
Black Rose Dragons' feet began pulling out of the ground below while her serpentine head swayed as she approached Aki. She appeared so strange in this bright and beautiful landscape, under the sun she didn't look half as scary. Just a deep red rose out to enjoy the life giving sun really. If one avoided her mad gaze she could 'almost' be considered safe, or as safe as any dragon could be considered.
Black Rose moved her head and laid down long enough to allow Aki to climb up the folds and avoid the sharp thorns that lined the ridges of her root like body. Once Aki was safely tucked behind Black Roses' neck, the dragon stood up and unfurled her wings. Letting her wings beat and lift the pair of them up off the ground into the azure sky.
Black Rose knew the lay of the land, and it left Aki with free time to just sit back and observe. The last time she rode on Black Rose, it had been at night, and she rode along in Stardusts front paws the rest of the trip to find the antidote to the poison given to Yusei. Rose wasn't a quiet dragon, the petals, though they served well for wings, produced more sound than she was used to with Stardusts traditional wings.
While below she could see that they were moving faster than the average car driving, but if Rose was pushing it... it would be questionable if she could outfly a car in a race. 'What am I thinking? She's a plant based dragon why would she out race machines when she's based off being rooted into the ground?' she found herself chiding herself gently.
Ahead she could see that they were approaching a forest, but for now it was just this sea of rich grass, vibrant and mesmerizing. In one direction mountain peaks reached the heavens, in others she could see the shimmer of ocean blue. While ahead of them she could see the gem like green of trees the outside fence that served as Ancient Fairy's forest home.
Yugi made all of this...
"I can't even, where do I even begin?" She pondered just to hear herself talk.
Witch of the Black Rose soared by her side, taking in the sights on her own and eager to find the next jewel of discovery that she could show her partner. Unlike the human world where Witch was usually incorporeal, here the sound of her dress rippling in the wind was audible.
But even with the wind whistling past their ears, Witch could hear the child like wonder in Aki's voice once more. Aki kept looking from one horizon to the other with this excited little smile on her lips as she looked about. A smile that comforted Witch to see, a sign that Aki wasn't drowning in all the bad things that had been happening as of late.
"Why NOT the beginning?" Black Rose suggested as the wind slipped through her petals. While below them Stardust Dragon could be seen looking up to see their approach a silver dragon statue before opening his own wings. It took several minutes, but finally Yusei's partner caught up with them and settled next to Black Rose.
"oooh So this is where you went..."
"Hello Stardust... How is everything?" Aki called out as they flew along.
"Everything? Well given what happened in Yami... there's a bit of worry that has taken over. As you might notice if you visit us more often. Some of the spirits are looking to gather up the healers, the ground is still scarred and Fairy hasn't gotten anything to grow there."
"She SHOULD NOT," Rose retorted. "There might be clues and she'll make us lose them!"
"The attack in Yami is why I'm here... Is Ancient Fairy currently at her... her..." Aki's voice trailed off as she realized she didn't really 'know' what Ancient Fairy called her home. Her palace? Her Grove?
"Grove? Garden? She's hanging out yes," Stardust admitted with a slight bob of his head. "Word of mouth is moving fast, the spirits are starting to go into hiding, so its for the best she's there so in case of emergencies."
"Point taken, much like how daddy is expected to be at the office at such times I suppose..." Aki agreed quietly.
'Everyone is scared...'
"Will Ancient Fairy be safe though if the grove is attacked? She's Ruka dragon, sure Ruka isn't taking those meds anymore, but could she handle an attack?" Aki asked...
And kept waiting for an answer from the spirits around her...
And waiting...
No answer came.
