Ushio stood on the side of the road, a notepad in hand as he wrote out a ticket. By his side was a car that had been sitting in the spot for so long that the meter maids had finally called it in. No bodies inside, be they adults, children or pets. Which was always a relief, rather than finding someone who had died alone in such a manner.
He cross checked the license plate while the radio continued communicating between the office and other officers on the field.
"I felt that! How can holograms create physical sensations?"
"What's this mist?"
"You too?"
"Officers? Confirm your situation."
"There's this mist for some reason. I feel kinda..."
The sound of a body hitting the ground and other calls of distress caused Ushio to look up from his work. He turned to look at his ride, his expression turning dark as he listened as his fellow officers continued reporting in.
A mist that when exposed to send several men to the ground when a large mammoth hologram rumbled by. When the beast passed by the mist dissipated allowing for the fallen to be pulled back. A few of the men had drawn their own decks and tried to challenge the spirits they saw, calling out challenges to the duelists hidden in the darkness.
'But there were only four duelists from what I heard earlier. One sounding like Fudo in fact, so who are they trying to challenge?' Ushio pondered as he began to finish up his ticket with more urgency in the strokes of his pen.
"Feel free to go and help them Ushio. There's only so many people across the alternate universes who recovered from their Penalty Games." Yugi suggested as he leaned against the wall on the other side of the car that Ushio had been writing up. Ushio was already an older classman than Yugi, so seeing him now old enough that the lines were starting to form around his eyes. The slight shade of gray that was just a whispered hint in his hair was visible to Yugi.
Still tall, thick shouldered and intimidating, but Yugi could see a new softened goofy side to the man that didn't exist before.
"Ok listen up men, I'm riding over there now. Do 'not'. I repeat 'Do not' enter the mist under any circumstance! Make sure any remaining civilians are kept away from the mist! And for the love of all the Kami keep an eye on Black Rose Dragon, she's touchy enough to throw something at you!"
"SIR!"
"... dragons have genders?"
"But there's two dragons here, so are they both 'Lady Dragon' or..."
Ushio took a moment to bury his face in his hands as he heard the discussion over semantics of speaking to a dragon. As if dragons could talk! A quick jog and he was swinging his leg over so he could mount up and move out. 'I get why we don't explain this to the regular officers but I really would appreciate another officer to help me with stuff like this...' he mused to himself as he rode off into the night, the taillights of his vehicle a sharp red that glowed along the white stonework of the walls he passed by.
While night had finally consumed the sky, above and the headlights of numerous Security officer vehicles punctured these large holes of light into the distance. The hologram of the Stardust Dragon was also illuminating the night for the officers. The gentle falling motes of light were a comfort as the dragon moved about the field in ways that defied all programming.
Several officers were curled up on the ground, the grass below them ripped up when their fellow officers dragged them away. Others were armed with their Duel Disks and had their hands at the ready for a duel... But...
Where were the duelist in question? In the distance, through darkness, fog, and crystalline light there were hints of people... Yet their cries for the duels to end were ignored... The light began retreating into the distance and the mist curled inward away from the officers. The crystalline holograms moved away revealing this creepy image of a man thing. He ran stiffly with rusted hinges for joints. He was so dark and there was another shadow that... ran after him? Maybe it was a trick of all these strange lights?
"I think I've lost my mind..." one officer griped and others nodded, "Think anyone would believe us?"
There was no further answers. As the mist disappeared the park lights around them crepted back in and illuminated the dueling field. Churned up earth was both a sight and a scent they could detect, the soft loam of fertile soil tossed up and over was obvious even in the early evening. And there was no one left out there to talk or call out to. Just pools of park lights and darkness...
While the duelists in question were left blinking in surprise at the sudden bright day light they were exposed to. Their opponent was just as blindsided despite wearing very large, very dark sunglasses. But his shadow, the fake Aki, was gone now, with the newcomers spirits flanking him and taking point.
In the distance Yusei could see plumes of thick black smoke, a blacken skeletal hand reaching for the bright blue sky.
"Yubel no..." Judai took off running across the bright green grass with no thought to the very threat in front of them. He didn't even see the energy blast, and was sent flying from the impact. The stranger ran over calling out in alarm while his spirits ran along side him, a shield between him and the man in black.
"You need to pay attention," Yusei growled out as Witch floated next to him.
"Its not that, he's a priest type like Ruka." Witchs' head tilted a bit to the side as she tried to think of a better way to explain it. "Fighting is an option, but we've seen her, she'd rather throw herself into danger to protect others. While Aki would rather throw a boulder at the threat." She nodded, pleased with her description.
"He doesn't seem to know Japanese, and who knows how well if at all Judai knows English." Yusei pointed out with a sigh... then looked around. 'Where's Stardust and Black Rose? More importantly, Black Rose?'
"I didn't realize there were any other children outside of that island that have the power to open those gates." Trueman noted coldly as he observed Johan more closely. In the light of the Duel Spirit world, Trueman could see with greater clarity what was before him. With the presence of the Gem Beasts, it was clear the boy was more associated with protection magics.
If he was suffered to live of course.
'This foretells future disasters for our plans, priests show up in numbers when God was among us, either in Egypt as the Pharaoh or in the modern age.' Five so far was five too many. God was tolerant of the games that were in play, but if the notion of praying to him was revitalized. Spirits crying out to Him would get an answer. 'Three of the priests are attached to his Crimson Dragon, but these two...'
Yusei barreled into him again, knocking Trueman off his balance and reminding him again of the teens' presence. That this duelist would break a duel to attack a person physically... Black smoke rose from Truemans' shadow, creeping up into the air only to become solid so he grabbed at the foolish teenager and began pulling him off.
"What ignorance you have to know what those of us from this world are. Yet would still attack us." Trueman scolded when a rose colored blast of light seared into his tendrils and freed Yusei's arm.
Witch of the Black Rose was hovering there, a black gowned floating doll amid a field of vivid bright green. As out of place as her willingness to help a human who had nothing in common with her themes. Save his place at the side of her partner perhaps.
The wild priestess...
Set her off and she would rip the world apart, the moment she arrived... Which could happen at any time because he wasn't sure where she was in proximity to the portal now. 'The Mark isn't glowing though...' Trueman thought to himself as he climbed back to his feet. By now the Crimson Mark should have been aflame with the Dragon's power.
That was when an idea struck him with enough force that he forgot about the Ancient Fairy Dragon all together.
The Mark wasn't glowing, thus the Crimson Dragon was abstaining from being involved in this leaving Yusei just... here. He wasn't a priest, he had nothing other than the blessing of being Gods' chosen heir. 'Defeating him, would mean the other dragons would forget he exists. Allowing me to transplant the Priestess from that one Psychics' control to mine...'
In the corner of his physical eye he could see the shadow of that one priest, Judai, trying to run off. Headstrong with determination that one and not protected by the Wild Priestess, though the novice... The blue haired boy with the Gembeasts was still an interesting...
Behind him, he could sense the presence of the Ancient Fairy Dragon, as repulsive as the sun at dawn. While the pulse from the portal hissed of the Black Rose Dragon and her partner... Violence, anger and nothing he could use for his own personal gain...
The Witch fired more energy beams at the bindings on Yusei, so he swatted at her with his power. "Bothersome brat," He growled in annoyance when he realized the Black Garden was growing around his ankles. Bushes were starting to sprout from the ground with the small, but growing, buds of black or red roses, dotting their stems.
While off to the side, Ruby was chasing after Johan.
"You need to be careful with this Spirit," Ruby felt compelled to advise Johan. Humans were so fragile, they saw only the surface and this spirit was using such a human form! The little spirit understood humans wore glass or plastic to cover their eyes. 'They probably think those are just sunglasses and don't realize that's actually his 'eyes'...' Eyes that were becoming speculative and fixated on Yusei. "We need to get Yusei away from him."
And Johan took charge by rushing in... because, "Johan! NO!"
Emerald gave that from the bones of the earth deep sigh they all wanted to give as the Gems rushed in. Rainbow Dragon emerged high above them and dove down to Johan with that type of fixated parent to save child motion.
'Man they worry too much about me,' Johan mentally grumbled. Physically powerless, the most he could do was summon his family but... this wasn't a duel and he was too far away to convey what he wanted Rainbow Dragon to do. The dragon's descent was already angled low, but if he could just get Rainbow to drop further down. He was confident that the crystalline glow of the dragon would force this spirit to release Yusei and back off.
At least that's what he was hoping for when Cat rushed past him while the ground fairly shook as Mammoth charged behind him. 'Oh that's not good, Amber doesn't exactly stop on dimes...' Johan thought in mounting alarm.
While Trueman saw his plans taking shape with that new priest running idiotically at him. Defeating Yusei would be ideal, Aki would forget about him allowing Trueman to take control of the priestess. Given that Divine was still missing, taking his form and using that control phrase that was helpfully broadcasted would make the priestess pliable.
'Could Yusei be corrupted? The Mark can be transferred so its not as though I would gain control over the Crimson dragon... but...'
…
Light burned along his back and he used a shadow to watch his back. Thus seeing the dragon aiming straight at him! Rainbow Dragon's presence had been drowned out by the Ancient Fairy and Black Rose, but it was close enough now that Trueman dove to the ground to avoid the hurdling form of the large serpentine dragon body. Yusei was ripped off his feet as Rainbow opened his clawed paws and snatched up Johan to pull him away.
"No! Wait!" Johan yelled out in alarm as he was whipped back the distance he had run and then some.
While still a ways off but approaching, Ancient Fairy flew with what could be considered an elder person's outrage. She was angry, heart broken, and instead of a cane she was a large, butterfly winged dragon with a breath weapon! Soaring over the village, she had found Yubel destroying a large building with a single blast cast from their hand. The spirit didn't bother to look up at her, however; the other... human? Possessed human?
Fairy wanted to get a closer look at the being with the spirit, she recognized the aura of a possession based spirit. Only for a blast from Yubel to illuminate the space above the spirit before rocketing off towards the dragon. Forcing Fairy to redirect her focus onto the spirit despite her desire to get a better look at the aura around the other being.
Regulus' roar of challenge could be heard as the lion arrived at the edge of the village. It drowned out the crackling of fire, and vibrated off what remained standing of the village structures. The healing spirits were hot on his tail, several voices calling out for friends among the numerous spirits.
The lions' roar may have cleansed the air of Nightshroud and Yubel's malicious power, yet there was only silence. No matter how hard they strained to hear a voice call back in answer. Meanwhile the two instigators of the destruction turned at the sound of the roar, and Yubel glanced back up at Ancient Fairy. Smirking...
Yusei could see Ancient Fairy slipping through the air, her style of flying brought to mind of skipping stones. While the Black Garden was coiling up from the ground, wrapping themselves around Yusei. The scent of roses touched his nose, assuring him that this 'was' Aki's Black Garden, though why it was trying to bind him was lost on him.
While multiple Trueman were starting to manifest throughout the area, many sending blackened tendrils after Witch. Chasing the poor doll like spirit up into the air as she tried to avoid being turned into a pin cushion. While Eagle began intercepting the tendrils with the light they emitted from above as Turtle made his way over to Johan. Generating a shield over the young man.
"Lets go get the dragon and fall back Johan, that spirit is too dangerous for as new as you are..." Emerald suggested, his earnest expression catching Johan's attention.
Allowing Johan a moment to nod in acceptance just as several of Judais' own spirits came soaring over head.
"I can't just leave him here to be captured." It was a phrase spoken aloud as some form of affirmation. Frustrated and confused the words came out raw, lacking in confidence or direction. When the heart was trying to force the mind to go along with it?
For Judai this was another mess. Trueman was after Yusei, that was obvious and Yubel no longer felt as close anymore. …. Any...
Ice tipped claws raced up his spine even under his jacket, spreading out from his nerves in his back to embrace all of him.
"Hello Yuki."
Judai whirled around and caught himself staring into Yubels' eyes. Cold, calculating, with a glimmer of excitement as they reached out and grabbed his forearms with a vice intense grip.
"I'm sorry Yubel. I'm sorry I didn't understand..." It was the first thing that Judai could think to say as he stood there. The nails dug into his coat, pricked his actual skin, while they began to smile at him.
It was feral, a cruel reminder that he did this, he sent Yubel away and the spirit suffered for it. For that he didn't feel afraid anymore. Indeed, he deserved it, but Yusei and this other guy?
"Hey! Let him go!" Johan called out and rushed in amid horrified cries of his Gembeasts.
Grabbing onto Judai, Yubel flung Johan away into a smoky presence that reeked of Nightshroud.
