Chapter 17 : The wacky slice of life
Asuka was standing next to the abandoned highway as she was watching the stopwatch she was holding in her hand. She only could show a frown on her face as she watched the empty highway
"Scheisse , where is he ? If we want to break the record we need to move faster than a slug . If he passed stages from 1 to 4 and is reaching the finish we would move up at least by a second . And I thought he was the greatest racer in the underground world ?"-Asuka said as the purple and green Honda sprinted across her eyes as Shinji Ikari slid beside her. As he took off his helmet revealing his four-edged scar and messy brown hair
"So ? What is my time ?"-Shinji asked as Asuka's face showed a frown
"1:32,420 on the 5 kilometer distance , if you want to be the new Burt Munro you need to pick up some speed"-Asuka said as threw the stop watch to Shinji
"Well we could call it on the mass addition you added"-Shinji said
"If you want to not only get faster but more reliable, some additional mass is required, Shinnie"-Asuka said as Shinji looked upon his bike . Even though he was a great engineer and an outstanding racer speed was supposed to be the main priority , even though the bike was a great piece of engineering it was pretty unreliable if riding slower than 110 kilometers per hour . and after 78 speeding tickets Asuka as the self-proclaimed "Mechanic number 2" went on to change that . Even if it contrasted with Shinji's core idea of "I don't care if it's not reliable , if it can turn and go fast it's good" rule . The oil and fuel consumption was also the problem as filling up the tank became a day-to-day task . So after Israfel was defeated Shinji and Asuka started the work on the "Highway Star Model 3" Not only fast but also reliable and able to be used not only to break speed records but wouldn't choke on slower speeds and could be driven at 110 but also at 290. To do their tests they spent the whole weekend searching for the right place . Eventually they found an old piece of Abandoned highway after the attack of Sachiel . After the Angel attacks started many of the Highways were put out of use due to abandonment of cities and only an occasional NERV truck used it . So it was a perfect place , Even though it was 50 kilometers away from Tokyo 3 . It was also one of the places that section 2 was omitting so Shinji and Asuka were free from the INGSOC wannabees
"Well we could lighten up the parts ? But that would mean"-Shinji was cutted off by Asuka
"More expensive parts , but we will get that money back on the street , Lighter piston rings and exhaust system . We still have money left from the last two weeks since we formed our little "Partnership" - Asuka said as she winked at Shinji
"Wait what ? You want to join me ? No no no no no no I work alone. I only took you out because i had no choice last time"
"Ah come on ! I know you can't manage all the things going on . The bike , the money management , Looking for the parts etc. Also you need some help around . And Rei would be happier if was going with you and someone kept you in check before coming back with bullet holes . Also I can black mail you to Misato about sneaking out during our training . I also have enough experience and basic knowledge since I finished engineering and physics . The first motorcycle was German afterall."
"Looks like I don't have a "no" answer . Ehh fine"
That was two weeks ago . And after Asuka joined Shinji's escapades they tripled their profits . And by the end of their two weeks the 750 000 yen daily became 2250000 in profits . When Shinji was looking for racing Asuka was searching for the necessary parts and equipment . And instead of 2 or 3 races they striked 10 to 15 during a single evening. And Asuka was beyond happy with their profits as she could afford AAA clothes since they separated profits
"Well we should go back to the apartment , It's getting dark"-Asuka said
"Fine , put on the helmet and i'll take the goggles"-Shinji said as they got on and Shinji made their way back to the highway entrance , Shinji tried to keep the bike above the initial 110 so that the whole system wouldn't mess around even with all the mods by Asuka and Shinji the bike still choked on air as their new task was to bring back the max performance of the old model 2. Even if it managed to climb up to the same speed, the weight of new parts put on a little bit of weight that made the bike feel "Weird" According to Shinji. After 45 minutes the duo was finally back in the apartment . After Shinji cooked dinner for the apartment's inhabitants Shinji silently retreated to his room
"Ok , clear"-Shinji said as he closed the door and took out a flashlight . and took out a little baggy from under his bed . It was the little bugchip he found in his bag after the battle with Gaghiel . For weeks now Shinji was wondering about the chip he found , since he didn't have the tech to check it
"Well well , it's been a few weeks . I still need to check what your purpose is "-Shinji said as he heard knocking on his door . Shinji quickly putted the baggy back under the bed and shoved the flashlight away before opening the door to reveal Asuka wearing a bathrobe
"Hey Shinji, have you seen my Toothpa-Wait , why is there a flashlight on ?"-Asuka asked as Shinji noticed that he forgot to turn off the flashlight that was laying on the floor . Asuka quickly noticed that something was under Shinji's bed as she took the baggy from under the bed
"Well , it's not a drug , and it's too small to be an injection. What is that ?"-Asuka said as putted the baggy close to her face. Shinji quickly closed the door and lit up the lights
"There , no bugs."-Shinji replied as puzzled Asuka looked upon his face
"Why are you worried about bugs ?"-Asuka asked as Shinji took out another bag filled with micro-dictaphones and microphones
"I found all of those during cleaning the apartment , the whole building is operated by Section 2 so no wonder it's full of those"-Shinji said as Asuka continued to look at the baggy as Shinji putted the down the bag
"I think I saw one of those in EURONERV . Apparently they were designed for internal comms , but that was a few years ago . But how have you got it since it's top secret like most of the NERV extravaganzas ?"-Asuka asked
"Well , I found it after Gaghiel in my bag . Apparently it was brought to Over The Rainbow by an Anonymous crew member , and i think that there is only one answer for that"-Shinji said as he looked upon Asuka
"WILLE , but why would they sneak a chip to a random bag ?"-Asuka asked as Shinji now thought of an idea as according to him it should slap him weeks ago
"I know someone who can help us , my WILLE insert . I'm gonna go to the Televideobooth . Wanna go with me ?"-Shinji asked
"Well , i took a shower to early anyways , also i'm pretty bored"-Asuka said as she left Shinji's room to get dressed , Shinji meanwhile put on his shoes and took out his NTT card and left his room with Asuka following soon as they passed Misato and Rei watching TV
"Where are you two going ?"-Misato asked as she stopped sipping her bear
"We are going t-"Shinji was cutted off by Asuka
"To a club ! We want to celebrate our partnership ! we'll be back after a couple of hours !"-Asuka announced as she pushed Shinji out of the apartment
"What the hell are you doing ?! Now we are stuck outside for hours !"-Shinji asked as he looked upon Asuka
"I was improvising you Idiot ! What is any reason to go outside for 5 minutes ?! Besides you are shit at lying"-Asuka said as they made their way to the made-up dock way as Shinji took off the canvas of his bike before they got on and made their way to the nearest Televideobooth . one the inventions that were put on across the whole post impact Japan , that was until the late 2000s when the first smartphones were released and NTT returned to using regular phone booths, it was about 5 minutes of riding until they reached the working memorial of the early post impact Japan , Shinji putted the card inside the Televideobooth and a primitive hud appeared

"Hello ?"-the voice behind the phone appeared as Kei showed up on the screen
"Hey Kei , you know that if im calling i need help"-Shinji said as he rubbed his nose
"And since only WILLE trusted people know the code for this booth and you're calling from the centre of the organisation we are fighting for . That can only mean that you got caught between the battle right ?"-Kei asked as on the other side Asuka looked upon Shinji with a look that made his body feel like it was getting pierce though
"Yep , tell me what is this ?"-Shinji asked as he took out the baggy with a chip
"Well , it's one of the prototype reconnaissance chips . The needle injects nanobots connected with the MAGI computers , we stole few of those alongside other prototypes few months ago"-Kei said as Shinji stared the little baggy down 'Well now we got the half of the information' Shinji thought
"Now for the next question , we know that WILLE has spies across the whole NERV . Did WILLE had any spies in EURONERV ? Most importantly , the maintenance crew of the Evangelion Unit 02 ?"-Shinji asked
"And here we reach the dot. I know for certain that we had a spy on that ship , but i dont have the name . Sorry Shinji"-Kei said as Shinji's face showed a frown
"Hey Kei, have you seen my-wait , you're talking with Shin ?"-Kaneda asked as he runned in front of the camera
"Oh hey Kaneda"-Shinji said as he looked upon one of his best friends
"Hey Shin , listen . Do you still have that old frame ?"-Kaneda asked
"That old cruiser-speeder-crotch rocket hybrid ? Yeah, it's in Tsukijicho 2 in the basement . And why are you asking that ?"
"Well , I need a new bike . And since I can simply transfer most of the parts from my old Yamaha . And i would give you the money after you come back"-Kaneda replied as Shinji thinked about it
"Money ? Bro , this place is literally a gold mine . I make 15 000 00 yen in two days alone just by racing , I'm literally sleeping on bills . You get the frame for free and all the necessary schematics are in the reception laptop , also the whole access to my equipment . I'll call them and you can your work tomorrow morning"-Shinji replied as Kaneda's face showed a toothy grin
"Thanks Shin , and wait . Is someone standing behind you ?"-Kaneda asked as Shinji noticed Asuka behind him as she was starring the kinescope screen
"I have to finish bye !"-Shinji said as he pressed the red button

The hud said as Shinji putted the baggy back to his pocket as Asuka stared him down
"Friends ?"-Asuka asked
"Yep , I have known Kaneda since I was 3 . And i met Kei while i helped her and Kaneda to hide from the authorities"-Shinji replied as he sat on the bench and lit up a cigarette
"So , there was a spy who aborted Over the Rainbow ? And NERV is supposed to be the hope to save the world ?"-Asuka asked
"And we are on the trail to know what's going on , And im pissed now since i know that Kaneda wrecked his bike"-Shinji said as he looked upon the redhead
"And what's that frame you have in the basement ?"-Asuka asked
"Few years ago I worked on a new type of bike . A cruiser that's actually a sportbike with the chassis closing around the rider , I had the whole project and schematics for the chassis cover and disk drive conversion . But i ditched it and focused all my time on the mark 1 of the HS and only finished the frame and the chassis electronic system"-Shinji said as Asuka sat next to him
"So we have the first clue , but what are we gonna do now ? Misato thinks we're out dancing . But Wine outdoors sure sounds like a great idea , so ?"-Asuka asked
"Why do I have a feeling that you know me perfectly ?"-Shinji asked as Asuka chuckled
"We synched to perfection you idiot . We are basically one , maybe it's a consequence ?"-Asuka asked as she looked upon the night sky
"Well we need to get to the liquor store to get ourselves a bottle , come on"-Shinji said as both he and Asuka got on his bike
THE NEXT DAY
'Dear something in the afterlife, help , my head is blowing up !'-Shinji's mind said as he stared up at his laptop with a severe hangover from last night . The one bottle of wine turned into five bottles as Shinji completely forgot how they returned back to the apartment , and how the bike was standing in its drop out zone . Since Shinji drunk drived many times he probably came back to the apartment with holding completely out Asuka strapped to him with duct tape . After coming back to his room Shinji asked Rei to help drunk Asuka get in her bed . After falling onto his bed Shinji woke up with a hangover but somehow still managed to operate a motorcycle. Shinji helped Rei to get Asuka into a working shape as it took the whole can of Shinji's body spray and an anti-hangover body wash but it worked and Asuka looked less like a walking corpse . Rei volunteered to help Asuka get to school as Shinji used his bike , its has been a long time since Shinji had a hangover like that . For the whole day Shinji managed to keep himself up as the several red bulls helped him . Another lesson came to a close as Toji and Kensuke came to Shinji's desk
"Yo Shin-man , by the looks of you i can see dont feel good"-Toji said as Shinji rested his head on the keyboard
"And how is HS 3 going on ? Is it finished ? Oh I see what happened . You drank yesterday and by the looks of it , alot"-Kensuke said as he corrected his glasses
"Just a few glasses with Asuka , that's it . Holy shit my head"-Shinji muffled into the keyboard
"So the rumors were true ! You and the devil are Datin"-Toji said as Shinji lifted off his head from the keyboard
"Eh Wha ?"-Shinji asked
"Someone saw you and Soryu few days ago , and the rumors were spread"-Kensuke said as Rei came next to Shinji
"Brother , I require your assistance"-Rei said as Shinji followed Rei to the bathroom . As they entered the bathroom Shinji noticed the opened cabin .
"Oh my god , Asuka ?"-Shinji asked as he noticed the redhead with her head inside the toilet
"Oh hey Shi-wait-Oh Fick !"-Asuka tried to finished as she puked the inside of the toilet before she took her head out of the toilet
"Ok , we will do it like that , you Rei will go to the drug store near the drug store to get anti-hangover pills. I'll stay here with Asuka"-Shinji replied as Rei nodded and made her meanwhile helped Asuka get out of the cabin and got her in front of the mirror
"Look at you Asuka , you look like crap !"-Shinji pointed down as they stared the reflection in the mirror
"Looks like we drank too much last night did we ?"-Asuka asked with a tone that was far away from being sober
"And who's fault was it "Come on, don't be a child ! I'm sure we can manage another one !"-Shinji asked as Asuka chuckled
"You're right , I messed up . The great child prodigy and she can't see the coming effects of a first best wine ? Damn im worthless"-Asuka said as it made Shinji curious
"Wha ?"-Shinji asked
"No no no no no no don't cut me off . I'm right , I'm always right ! I am worthless and everyone will leave me alone . Just like my parents . After the Angels will be over they will send me back to Germany to that dumb EURONERV . And my whole life will be over . Piloting Eva is all I have in my life . What if you will get killed on my specifications ? Rei and Misato will hate me and you will spit on me from your grave . They will take my Unit 02 away from me and-MPHH !?"-Asuka was cutted off by Shinji's hand
"You probably drank too much . The effects are still on . You ? Worthless ? That sounds like the dumbest joke ever. You are an amazing person and a great engineer . A person like me whose pride is its only barrier that's impressive to get from me and you .Thats what makes us a great team. You're the most unique girl I've ever met and an amazing pilot . Like really great and making me feel competitive . And I love competition . And now I'm currently helping you . Does this ever mean that I will leave you ? Now let's get you clean up"-Shinji said as Asuka nodded and allowed Shinji to wash her hair and face and waiting for Rei to come with the anti-hangover pills
A/N: And so another chapter finished ! No music and a chapter focused entirely on our two main characters. And lets see how their relationship will develop
