Chapter 5
"Jeez, I'm so nervous is sad." Kagome mumbled to herself as she sat at her kitchen table, her hands fiddling with her phone. Her foot bounced with her nerves as she kept glancing at her phone. Midnight had told her to be ready by seven, it was now seven fifteen.
She rushed home from her impromptu meeting with Enji and Toshi, quickly taking a shower and getting ready. She had left her hair down, it fell to her waist line in thick waves. She'd put on a deep blue knee length dress, black heeled sandals and done a bit of light make up. A bit of eye liner, clear lip gloss and a spray of her favorite perfume.
She'd never liked make up much, not even as a teenager and once she started dating her ex she had tried to live up to his expectations and he still ended up cheating on her. She dressed how he wanted her to, did her hair and make up like he liked and it still wasn't enough.
She wasn't enough.
Slumping her shoulders she started to rethink this mixer, maybe it was to soon. While the break up had been years ago it was still so fresh in her heart. She was still rattled from running into her old friends, maybe she could text Midnight that she wasn't feeling well and would make it up to her on another day?
Pondering the thought she opened her phone, ready to send off a text that would allow her to stay home yet blinked as Midnight sent her a text.
Kagome, come on out. I'm waiting outside, sorry for running late. I had one hell of a time wrangling someone else into coming. :D
Kagome felt dread settle into the pit of her stomach, shooting off a reply stating she would be down in a few seconds she resigned herself to her fate. At least she wasn't the only one who didn't want to go. Sliding her phone into her black purse she grabbed her keys and left her apartment, locking it behind her.
Making her way to the street she was surprised to see Midnight leaning out of a window of a sleek black car. Had Midnight hired a driver for the night? Just how much was she planning on drinking? Shoving the dread and thoughts away she approached the car and opened the door once Midnight sat back down and slid over.
"Kagome-chan, don't you look scrumptious!" She clapped her hands happily as Kagome merely flushed a bit as she slid into the car to sit next to her, blinking as she heard a manly grunt. She turned her gaze to the source of it and was surprised to see a rather irate looking man, he had black shoulder length hair pulled back into a ponytail, dark scruff along his jaw line as he glared at a squealing Midnight. He was dressed in a black suit with a white dress shirt and dark blue tie. His dark brown, almost black eyes looked tired and a bit irritated.
"Oh, Kagome-chan this is Aizawa. He's a fellow teacher at UA. Aizawa say hi." She grinned as Aizawa merely glared at her. Rolling her eyes she turned back to Kagome. "Ignore him, he's mad he lost a bet. Anyways! I'm excited to see what tonight has in store for us!" Kagome could only gulp, a forced smile on her lips as she watched Midnight squirm in her seat, her short red skirt ridding up even high on her thighs.
Midnight was a beautiful and sensual woman, with her black hair and blue eyes, the deep red of her dress made her skin look even more pale. The low cut of it exposed ample amounts of cleavage, the thin straps showing her narrow shoulders and that fact that she wasn't wearing a bra.
It made Kagome feel over dressed.
Midnight merely grinned, throwing an arm around Kagome and pulling her close. "We're going to have the time of our lives!"
Two hours later found Kagome sitting in a booth nursing the same drink she had ordered when they first stepped foot into the small bar. Midnight was off dancing on the floor, the rest of the people from the mixer with her. In fact her only other companion was Aizawa.
He was leaning back against the cushion of the booth, a low ball of whiskey in his hands. He'd been downing them steadily, his body relaxing with each new glass, it was clear to her he didn't want to be here but was here anyways.
Midnight had mentioned a bet, she was curious as to what it was but she was a bit reluctant to approach the dark brooding male. He had sent every woman who dared to approach him running with just a dark glare. She herself had been waving off invitations to dance all night, it wasn't that she was trying to be mean. She just really wasn't feeling it.
Finally finishing her drink she glanced down at her phone, it was only nine, far to early for her to leave without hurting Midnight's feelings. Flagging down a waitress she ordered another drink yet blinked as the scent of mahogany wafted over her.
"Another whiskey please." Aizawa's low voice came from next to her making her blink, he had moved closer to her in order to make his order before the waitress could skitter away. The waitress nodded, batting her eyelashes at him, not that he noticed since as soon as he gave his order he looked away from her to gaze at his own phone.
A bit miffed the waitress stalked off, to ring in their orders. "What does she have on you?" His voice was low, layered with boredom. Kagome gave a light laugh as she tucked a stray lock of raven hair behind her ear. "Ah, she pretty much did all the leg work for me to get hired at U.A. What about you? She mentioned a lost bet?"
She was fishing, hoping to pass the time chatting and learning about her future co worker. Aizawa sighed though his nose as he leaned his head back against the cushioned seat they sat on. "It was stupid really, I should have known something was up." He grumbled recalling how Midnight and Yamada had set him up. "It was a bet on whether or not Endeavor would follow All Might to the school. I assumed he wouldn't, he's not exactly the kid friendly type..."
Kagome couldn't help the laugh that escaped her, her shoulders shaking with her laughter. "Oh god, of course Enji would follow him. Whatever Toshi does, Enji has to do it better." Shaking her head she recalled all the ways they had found to compete when they were younger.
Aizawa's eyebrows shot up into his hairline at how casually she referred to the number one and number two heroes. "You sound like you're close with them..." His words held no judgement, just curiosity.
Ducking her head a bit she gave a small bitter chuckle. "I used to be." Her shoulders slumped, she had missed out on so much of their lives, and vice versa, but that was then and there. All they could do now was move forward. Besides, she doubted Aizawa wanted to head about her problems. "Anyways, Midnight said you're a teacher at U.A. what class do you teach?"
They fell into conversion, sipping at their drinks as they chatted, paying no heed to those around them.
Kagome laughed as she leaned against Aizawa, a new drink in her hand, she didn't know what number she was on. Just that as they talked she would finish one only for another to reappear at the table. The same happened for Aizawa and while she knew it was suspicious she just went with it, she had no doubt Midnight had a hand in it but she would ask her later.
For now she was really enjoying her time with the younger man. It was a bit shocking to learn he was just entering his first at U.A. when she was in her third year. "Jeez, I feel old now..." She grumbled under her breath, blinking as Aizawa gave a deep chuckle. "You look amazing for an 'old lady'." He gave her a shit eating grin as she huffed at him playfully swatting at his arm.
"Watch it mister. I'm your elder. Show some respect." She flushed as he leaned in closer to her, his breath mixing with hers, she could smell the whiskey on his breath and she knew he could smell the brandy on hers. She felt her cheeks flush, her body instinctively leaning into him, her eyes fluttering shut only to jerk open as he phone gave a shrill ring. She quickly pulled back, her cheeks red as she answered her phone. Using her other hand to plug her other ear so she could hear who was on the line, all the while shooting a brooding Aizawa an apologetic smile.
"Kagome, it's me Enji. I just wanted to make sure you're okay." Kagome blinked as Enji's voice entered her ear. Clearing her throat she nodded, forgetting he couldn't see her.
"Ah, yeah. I'm fine. I'm still at the mixer actually, so it's kind of hard to hear you." Her voice was breathy as she spoke making Enji arch an eyebrow, he was under the assumption she hadn't wanted to go, therefore he assumed she would show up and then leave as quickly as possible but to learn she was still there was a bit concerning.
It was easy to tell she was a bit tipsy, her words were a bit slurred. "Are you okay, you sound a bit winded." Kagome flushed, of course he would pick up on her buzz. "Yeah, I'm fine. Really, thanks for checking up on me though."
She blinked as Aizawa slid closer to her in the booth, his body heat mingling with hers. "Kagome, did you want to step outside?" His voice was low and made her toes curl as she merely nodded her head, sliding out of the booth with Aizawa following suit, her purse in his hand.
Enji blinked hearing the low mumbled words of an unknow male, his worry and ire flaring to life. "Kagome, who was that?" He waited as the sound of them moving through a crowd met his ear. Only to be cut off with the sound of a closing door a few moments later.
Kagome flushed, the cool air of the night making her heated skin shiver. Aizawa noticed the way goosebumps rose on her exposed skin and stepped closer to her. "Ah, thanks." She blinked as she heard Enji calling her name from her phone speaker and quickly brought it back to her ear, feeling bad that she forgot she was on the phone with him.
"Ah, sorry. That was one of our co workers. Anyways, I'm fine. Thanks for calling to check up on me, you're such a good friend. I'll talk to you later though, okay?" She barely waited for a response before hanging up her phone as she accepted her purse from Aizawa, placing her phone in it before slinging it over her shoulder.
Aizawa couldn't help the smirk on his face as she leaned into him, sighing happily as he wrapped an arm around her waist. He hadn't expected to make a connection with anyone at this damn mixer yet he here was, leaning against the railing of the bar as she curled into his side. It could be the alcohol but he was loathe to let her go, let alone share her attention with whomever had called her.
He hadn't missed the way she threw the word friend out as she had bid the other male on the phone good night in order to return her focus onto him. It made his male pride swell a bit. "I don't know about you but I'm hungry, want to get a bite to eat?" He knew that eating would sober them both up.
Kagome blinked at his offer, tilting her head, was he asking her out on a date? As if reading her thoughts he shot her a cocky smile, "It's not a date." Her shoulders slumped at his rejection yet he merely thrummed his fingers on her waist before continuing. "I want our first date to be when we're both sober."
Oh, he was smooth. Flushing she merely nodded her head, letting him lead her down the street. "Okay, just make sure you let Midnight know we're leaving." She gave a small smile as he sighed through his nose, not wanting to re enter the bar. "I'll send her a text once we sit down to eat...do you like ramen?" He blinked as she stiffened and shook her head negatively. "No, I hate it...but I'd love some WacDonalds." Her smile was tight, he had upset her without meaning to and he filed it away to ask her about it later. For now he merely nodded as he began to lead her towards the nearby fast food restaurant. Glad it was open twenty for seven.
Kagome shoved down the thoughts of her ex and decided to focus on the here and now, and right now she was really enjoying the company of Aizawa and was glad that the night was not yet over.
