Author's Note: Sorry to make this short, but this was all I could spare. Enjoy the chapter. Any and all comments are welcome.
"I can't believe we're going to meet Doc Louis!" Felix said excitingly in the passenger's seat.
"Yes, Felix. You've said that twenty times already." Sunset said driving the car behind the Proud family's. Taking up three of the four seats behind them were Mac, LaCienega, and Papi.
"Sorry, mi amor. I'm just so excited. I mean, we're going…"
"To meet Doc Louis. Yeah, yeah." Sunset interrupted. "Honey, I love you, but if you say that one more time, I'm going to arrest you for disturbing the peace."
"Sorry, officer." Felix apologized.
"Why do I even have to be there?" LaCienega asked. "I don't even like boxing."
"To support your cousin." Sunset said.
"Con su altura, estoy esguro de que necesita todo el apoyo que pueda conseguir. (Translation: With his height, I'm sure he needs all the support he can get.) HOOHOOHAHAHAHA!" Papi laughed.
"LaCienega, Mac is going to try and be a boxer, and as his family, it's up to us to be by his side." Sunset said.
"Believe me, no one is more excited than I am." Mac said.
"Or more delusional." LaCienega mumbled.
"I heard that." Mac shouted.
The car stopped right behind the Proud's in front of a rustic, characteristic gym. After parking, everyone got out of their cars and regrouped at the front door.
"Everyone ready?" Mac asked.
"Hold it, kid. First thing's first." Oscar said. "Felix, remember our talk. What do we do if by some miracle, we actually do see Doc Louis?"
Felix sighed sadly. "No asking him to sign my belly."
"By some miracle?" Suga Mama asked. "You doubting me, boy?"
"No offense, mama, but I think your medication's finally getting to you." Oscar said entering the gym. "I mean, you really expect us to believe that you actually know…" He gasped as he saw a large figure across the gym. "DOC LOUIIIIIIIIIS!"
The inside of the gym wasn't exactly high-tech. There were no electric treadmills or mechanical bikes. But there were weights to lift, punching bags, pull up bars, a place to jump rope, and a boxing ring at the center. There were one or two people there, but Oscar and Felix had their eyes on the large, obese, black man with the bald head, a black beard, a red tracksuit, and a white rag around his neck.
They immediately ran across the gym fast as bullets and stopped when they approached him.
"I don't believe it! You're THE Doc Louis!" Oscar said excitedly.
Doc chuckled. "Yeah. That's what they call me."
"Mr. Louis," Felix said, "If you don't mind…"
"Felix! Enough!" Oscar shouted. "Sorry about that. He gets a little excited sometimes. So you're actually Suga Mama's fitness instructor?"
"Yeah. Why do you ask?" Doc asked.
"Well, this whole time, I thought my mama was just pulling my leg."
"Wait. Your mama?" Doc asked. "Oh, you must be her son. She talks a lot about you."
Oscar was surprised and let out a smile. "Really?"
"Oh, yeah." Doc said. "She always said how smart, talented, and caring you are. She's really proud of you."
Oscar began to tear up with each word. "Wow. That's the nicest thing she's ever said."
"Well, it's nice to finally meet you, Bobby."
Oscar's tears disappeared as his face dropped. "What? You thought… Oh, no, Mr. Louis. Bobby's my brother."
Doc was confused before raising his eyes. "Wait. You're Oscar?"
"Yeah. Does Suga Mama say anything about me?"
"Well, yeah… But she says you're too immature for that kind of language."
Suga Mama laughed as she and the rest of the families finally caught up. "The truth hurts, don't it, boy?"
"You mean the truth of how you're the devil? It actually explains a lot." Oscar muttered.
"Hey, Suga Mama." Doc said giving the old woman a hug.
"Always a pleasure, Doc." Suga Mama said.
Trudy and Sunset both looked around the gym. "Huh. This place is… interesting." Sunset said. "Certainly different than the gym I usually go to."
"Sure, this place ain't exactly Planet Fitness, but it has character." Doc said. "So, Suga Mama, what brings you here. We ain't due for another session for another two days. Wanting to hit the punching bags early? We're a little short on them at the moment."
"Si quieres bolsas para perforar, solo mirale la cara. (Translation: If you wants bags to punch, just look all over her face.) HOOHOOHAHAHAHA!" Papi laughed.
"Actually, Doc, there's this kid here who wants to be a boxer, but needs a trainer." Suga Mama said. "I was hoping you could be that trainer."
"Really? Let me see." Doc said as he walked over and approached where Mac and Penny were at. He looked deeply and examined. "Well, this girl is promising. With some time, I'm sure she'd grow into a nice boxer in the future."
"Really?" Penny asked.
"Oh, not her, Doc." Suga said. "I was talking about the boy."
"Boy?" Doc asked.
"She means me, Mr. Louis." Mac said finally getting the coach's attention.
"Oh! Sorry, boy." Doc chuckled. "I kinda mistook you for a lawn gnome. You really want to be a boxer?"
"That's my dream, sir." Mac replied.
"A dream as big as he is short." LaCienega commented earning a quick sneer from her cousin.
Doc took a very close look at Mac. It was much deeper than when he examined Penny. Finally, he pulled away with a skeptical look. "How old are you, kid?"
"Fifteen."
"Hmm…" Doc was still skeptical. "Do me a favor: show us a bit of shadow boxing. Everyone, give him room."
Everyone stepped away from Mac giving him room. First, he took a slow, steady breath. Then, he raised his fists and began throwing them into the air. Doc had expected sloppy moves, but was instantly prepared by the technique and movements as though they were done by someone with at least a year of experience. After a minute has passed, Mac stopped letting out a few heavy breaths and lowering his hands.
"So what do you think, Doc?" Felix asked.
"If you say no, we get it." Oscar said.
"Oscar, let him speak." Trudy advised.
"What do you think, Mr. Louis?" Penny asked.
Doc crossed his arms and smiled. "Okay then. You're in, kid."
Mac gasped out in astonishment. "Really?"
"Really?" Suga Mama, Sunset, Trudy, and Penny asked at once with pride.
"Really?" Oscar, Felix, and LaCienega asked at once with confusion.
"Yep. He may be small, but he's full of potential." Doc said. "Starting next Saturday, we'll begin our training. Just to warn you, kid, it ain't gonna be easy."
"I'm not expecting it to be, coach." Mac replied.
"All right. Thanks for bringing him to my attention, Suga Mama." Doc said.
"Mientras desvie la atencion de Suga Mama. (Translation: As long as it draws attention away from Suga Mama.) HOOHAHAHAHA!" Papi laughed.
"Isn't it great, Mac?" Penny asked. "You're gonna be a boxer like you wanted."
"Yeah. I am, aren't I?" Mac asked still in disbelief.
Today, Mac Poco-Leone met a former boxing star and was promised to train under him. His career is off to a great start.
