"How long has she been awake?"
"A few days."
"Has she said anything?"
"She's unresponsive."
"Unresponsive? What do you mean?"
"Not unresponsive. The girl is catatonic. Bruce, I told you she needs a hospital."
"We can't take that risk, Dinah."
"Clark, talk some sense into him."
"I'm not exactly caught up on the situation."
"Get caught up. I'm leaving."
"…Bruce—"
"Isn't there an emergency that needs your attention right now?"
"I took care of it. I'm here now."
"I don't need you here, Clark."
"Dinah paints a different picture."
"I'm aware."
"…"
"Clark, is something wrong?"
"…Sorry, we'll have to pick up on this later. Emergency. I have to go."
"Hnh."
Hailey could hear everything they were saying, but she wasn't paying them any mind. Not since she opened her eyes and realized she was in a sort of cell. They said she wasn't a prisoner. They lied to her. They were all liars. She couldn't trust them. She would bide her time and find a way to escape.
"He's alone again. And being a creep," Jason told her. "Hey, was it just me, or did Batman and Superman sound like a married couple? Do you think they're like together, together?" Jason waved a hand in front of her face. She ignored him. "Hey, I already told you. I didn't know Bruce was Batman. You don't have to give me the silent treatment. I know as much as you do."
How did she end up locked up again? Was this her life from now on? To have a glimpse of freedom just to be abducted again and again? Wouldn't it be better if she just died? Hadn't that already happened? That woman. Talía. Yes, that was her name. She knew Batman. She called him her beloved. She had killed Hailey. In the car. With poison. All because Hailey could possibly take what belonged to her son. Regardless that Hailey had no idea what she had to do with Batman.
Batman saved her one time. Hailey never saw him again. Not in person. But without realizing it, she was living with him. He'd been her dad. When Talía took her, Hailey had cut ties with Bruce. Now Batman/Bruce was holding her hostage. What was his reason? Was he waiting for Talía to come for Hailey?
Hailey couldn't let that happen. She had to leave. But how?
"He's gone!" Jason told her in a hurried breath. "You have to get up! It's time to go!"
"What are you talking about? How are we getting out?" Hailey said in a soft voice.
She was holding back an exasperated scream. There was no way out. No one was going to help her. And she had no idea how to open a glass cage.
"Impulse told you the plan. Weren't you listening? Robin was going to provide a distraction in Gotham. One Batman couldn't ignore. Impulse would disable the cameras and open the cell. Look, the cell is open! Get the fuck up!"
Hailey sat up and looked around. Someone ran into her cell. He looked familiar, but she wasn't sure if she knew him.
"Hey, we don't have much time. Can you walk?"
"Jason?"
"Not Jason," said the guy with a buzz cut and red domino mask. "Can you walk?"
Hailey nodded and stood up. Her legs gave out on her. He caught her around the waist. She was aware that the limb wasn't human. It was hard and cold. It made her shiver. She figured the guy was a cyborg or Android of sorts. He sounded human. He had a deep voice. He half carried, half dragged her out of the cell.
"Robin and Impulse are going to owe me big for this."
"Where are we going?" Hailey asked. She was planning on ditching this person the first chance she got. Hailey didn't trust Tim or Impulse. She couldn't trust anyone.
"Away for now. Somewhere safe, hopefully soon."
They reached a doorway. Not Jason looked around the corner before he continued to move.
"Define safe."
"Let's concentrate on getting out of here," he said, voice terse. "Questions later."
"Bossy," Hailey said with a roll of her eyes.
"Never heard that one before," he said as he looked around another corner. "Okay. From here, it's a straight shot to the bathroom."
"I'm good."
"Good to know," he told her with an amused lilt. "We're lucky. Impulse made sure no one was around. But just in case someone returns, we're going through the vents. Are you claustrophobic?"
"No."
He nodded at her. "Let's go."
They ran down a hallway and made a quick turn before they entered a large shower room. When the door shut, Hailey jerked away from the guy who led her inside. She moved too fast and put forth too much force that she landed on her ass. Hailey grabbed her head and stared at her surroundings in horror. The shower room was a replica of the prison where they held her for months and months or years and years. Was she still there? Did she only dream about getting out?
"No, no, no, no."
Hailey felt panic rise in her chest. She could hear her heartbeat drumming loudly in her ears. Her breath quickened, bordering on hyperventilating.
"I'm still here?"
She felt someone shake her shoulder. She snapped her attention to the person beside her. She scooched away in fear.
Jason crouched down in front of her. It was just Jason. She let out a breath of relief.
"Hey, hey. Look at me."
She was, wasn't she?
He took her hands in his. Hailey looked at him, but he was blurry. Her eyes held unshed tears.
"We're almost out. I need you to hang on a little longer. Do you think you can do that?" Before she could answer, he pulled her up to her feet. "The vent is ready. Let's go."
Hailey followed dumbly while she wiped her eyes. Once they were standing under the vent, Jason shot a grapple gun and pulled her into his side. They quickly went into the vent. Jason took the time to place the cover back in place.
"You go first. Straight ahead," Jason told her. Hailey crawled through the vent. Jason gave her directions until they reached a vent cover. He told her to stop and went to work to open it. "Can you swim?"
"I don't know."
"Okay," Jason said and pulled out a couple of rebreathers. He handed one to Hailey and pointed to her mouth. She placed it in her mouth and bit down on the bit to keep it in place. "Don't worry. I'll be right behind you."
Hailey hummed a questioning sound. He smirked at her and pushed her out of the vent. Her eyes widened, and she felt her stomach bottom out before she hit the water.
Hailey felt her body sinking. She panicked for a moment but then realized she could breathe. Hailey let her body relax. She looked around and realized how peaceful it was. It was quiet. She felt weightless. She wanted to stay down there forever. Then an arm wrapped around her body from underneath her pits. He guided her through the water. She grabbed onto the arm with both her hands. It felt hard to assimilate metal. But she felt peaceful and safe.
Hailey didn't know how long she was underwater. It was jarring when she was pulled out and onto a boat. Jason had to hold her down because she tried to jump back in.
"We need to go." He pushed her hair out of her eyes so that she could focus on him. "I don't know how big of a window we have. You can drown later; away from here."
Hailey didn't say anything. She stopped resisting and that seemed to be enough of an answer.
"Here."
She caught a few items that were thrown in her direction. It was a thick blanket and a groutfit with the words Bowhunter Security written on them.
"You should change out of the wet clothes and cover up. It's going to be cold. We're going along the coastline until we hit Connecticut."
Seeing that her companion was giving her some privacy while facing the bow of the speedboat, she decided it was okay to change out of the wet clothes. She covered herself with the blanket but the cold air still whipped around her. Her face felt cold as ice and her teeth began to chatter when the sun disappeared from the horizon. It wasn't long after that her body succumbed to sleep.
Hailey woke to the feeling of being jostled. She didn't move but she did stiffen. When she opened her eyes, all she saw was a closeup of a face in profile. Mostly a red ear. Her wrists were pinned together by rope. She felt her stomach drop and then she was free-falling. Before she was carried upward. Her body tensed and even though her wrists were bound, she was able to grab onto a shoulder. Her legs dangling from the edge of an iron bar bent to tighten on it. Anything to find purchase. She shit her eyes tightly. On the way back down, she heard a chuckle.
"You're finally awake."
Hailey didn't open her eyes again until they landed on a rooftop.
"You slept through the entire boat ride. And I couldn't wake you when we arrived on shore. It was a good thing I planned ahead and hid transportation nearby. Otherwise, I wouldn't have been able to get you on the plane without leaving a trace." As he spoke, he crouched down and removed her bindings.
"I would apologize for binding your wrists and legs but there was no way I could carry you and grapple through the city." He held out a hand towards her. She took it and he helped her stand. "I couldn't risk allowing anyone to see you with me. And I know this city like the back of my hand. There will be no trace of us heading to my safe house."
This boy had saved her from her prison. And he wasn't Jason. He looked more like what Roy Harper would look like if he was younger. How had she mistaken him for her brother? Not only was Jason dead, but she was in a different world altogether. Did Jason exist here? Did that matter? All that mattered was that she was out of that prison. Away from Batman and Nightwing. And she wanted to keep it that way.
"Where are we?"
"Star City. My hometown. I can keep you hidden here," Roy told her without looking up. He was looking at the screen of his phone. "I have a safe house nearby. Let's go."
He gestured for her to follow. He ran to the edge and jumped to the next roof over. Hailey stared in disbelief but shook her head. She'd never jumped across a rooftop, but it shouldn't be so hard. She took a running start and jumped onto the ledge just as she'd seen him do.
She was supposed to jump again from there to the next roof but she hadn't anticipated how far the next roof was. She had planned a small hop down not a big leap over. And the hesitation made her lose her balance. Her arms windmilled as she fell off the roof and onto the fire escape.
"What are you doing?" Roy said, looking at her from the edge of the other rooftop. He sounded a bit peeved to Hailey. He climbed over the edge and onto the fire escape. She looked a little lost to him. He sighed. "So, I take it you've never done this before?"
"What gave me away?" Hailey said in annoyance. She'd lost count of how many times she'd made a fool of herself in front of Roy. She wanted the earth to open up and swallow her whole. Her legs were shaky. She was breathing a little erratically. She screamed when Roy landed beside her. He covered her mouth with a slap of his hand. Add that to the growing list of embarrassing moments. "Ow."
"Sorry," Roy told her quickly. "But you need to keep it down. Stealth is the key."
"I didn't gauge the distance correctly and freaked out," Hailey said, looking away and scratching her arm.
"Yeah," Roy said with a huff. She wasn't sure if it was a sound of annoyance or amusement. Probably both. "I didn't take into consideration you'd never jumped rooftops before."
He chuckled. Hailey didn't look at him. She eeped when he wrapped a hand around her waist just like before.
"Alright, new plan," Roy said and shot his grappling hook to get to the next building. "Ready to keep going."
"Yes."
"Good.
Roy kept a hold of her as they ran and swung from rooftop to rooftop.
Star City was on the opposite side of the country from Gotham. That made her feel safe. So did Roy. She hadn't known much about him back home, but her gut was telling her to trust him. He'd been completely honest with her from the get-go. The first person who had ever been straight with her since she could remember.
"Thank you," she told him softly. But he heard her anyway.
"Don't mention it."
