Yesterday's Woes
"E-excuse me."
His thoughts were quickly interrupted by a familiar voice.
Makoto turns around, only to see the same green haired boy from yesterday.
"...You're the guy from the cafeteria yesterday."
The boy suddenly bows at the waist at the speed of light, catching Makoto off guard.
"I'm sorry!" Exclaimed the green haired boy.
"huh?"
After seeing the boy straighten from his bow, Makoto notices the despaired look on his face.
"I caused such a mess. I should've just kept quiet..."
The boy's eyes were locked unto the ground. Seemingly unable to face Makoto while his hands formed fists.
"...what?"
"Back at the cafeteria I wasn't even thinking. It was stupid of me to try to talk to you... I ended up bothering you and everyone else and-"
"Wait a second. I don't think we're on the same page here."
The boy looked almost surprised at that comment. "You'd still have your friends...if it weren't for me."
"And now...people won't stop talking about you. I didn't think this would happen. I'm so sorry for causing you so much trouble." He continued.
Makoto opens his mouth to interject but was very promptly cut off.
"I promise. I'll leave you alone for the rest of my life. I won't bother anyone again-"
"Stopstopstop." Interrupted Makoto with his hands up.
"bu-"
"Hold it."
For the first time since the beginning of the conversation, the boy's eyes which were glued to the ground in shame finally met with his.
What he saw concerned him.
Why was there so much fear in those eyes?
"I think you misunderstood something important."
"misunderstood?" Asked the boy, cocking his head to the side.
"I left those jerks. Not the other way around."
Not like that was hard to see, he did storm out of the cafeteria.
"And as for the gossips and murmurs. Those people can keep yapping on about it for all I care. I regret nothing." Makoto added. Remembering fondly what his sister had told him that day. "If anything, I owe you a thank you."
"a thank you?"
"I wouldn't have known I was hanging out with terrible people If it weren't for you."
"I don't...but-"
"It's not your fault. It never was." Giving the nicest smile he could possibly achieve, Makoto looked over the despaired, quirkless boy.
"Why?" Said the boy, out of the blue.
"huh?"
"Then why did you defend me? You spoke up for me, out of nowhere. Why?" The boy asked again, intent on getting an answer.
"...People can do nice things for no reason can't they?"
The boy gave him a piercing look, trying to read into his intentions. He looked like he was about to say something, but changed his mind.
The boy silently hoped he could get some sort of an explanation from Makoto. Someway to tell him why he truly did what he did.
But he got no such answer. And the green haired boy wasn't much to try to pry.
So he did what he does best, "...I'm sorry." he apologized yet again. "I guess you're right." he said finally, feeling lighter now as if a heavy weight had been taken off of his shoulders.
Makoto gave a soft smile. "Look, why don't we start over?"
The boy looked at him quizzically.
But the boy had no time to respond as Makoto held out a hand, "My name's Makoto Naegi."
The boy hesitated for a second. But his nervousness was quickly dissolved by Makoto's kind smile.
The boy returned the hand shake, "I'm...Izuku Midoriya."
