A Surprise for Christmas

Bruce Wayne entered his home with a buzz of excitement that he was having a difficult time containing. He was more than relieved that he had finally come up with an idea for a gift for Diana for Christmas and their anniversary. He found it difficult to come up with something extra special every year for her, but this time, he had finally outdone himself.

He knew he was going to have to work fast to get everything to fall into place in time, but with the help of Alfred and his daughters, he could get it done. It would be well worth it all to see the look of joy on his wife's face when she received her gift.

He immediately went in search of his twin daughters, knowing they would be happy with his plan. They were going to be thrilled to be a part of the planning process as well as the destination. The problem was going to be making sure his girls were able to keep it a secret.

Diana came down the hall with Ayden in her arms, his little hand already reaching out to his father. He babbled excitedly as Bruce approached. "Dada," he said, opening and closing his hand at him.

"You're home early," Diana greeted him with a kiss.

Bruce returned her kiss before taking his young son into his arms. "I got done early with my meeting," he replied. "How is this little man? Is he better?"

Diana smiled affectionately as she caressed her son's hair. "He just got up from his nap with no fever, but his nose is still running," she informed him.

Bruce kissed Ayden's temple, relieved that his son was feeling better. "Where are the girls?" he nonchalantly asked, not wanting to stir his wife's curiosity.

"They're in the entertainment room making Christmas cards," she told him.

"Have they decided what they want to do for their birthdays?"

"They can't decide between going to Themyscira to see my mother or having their friends over for a party," she revealed.

"I'll go talk to them to see if we can make a decision," he replied. "We need to know soon if we're going to be able to plan anything."

"Great," she said. "I'm going to go finish wrapping presents."

"Like my gift?" he responded with a little smirk.

"Maybe," she said with a grin. "You're just going to have to wait to see what it is."

"You know I do have my ways of getting information from you," he flirted as he closed the distance between them, intentionally invading her personal space. "I could make you talk, princess."

Diana glanced down at his mouth, amusement playing on her lips. "I'd like to see you try," she teased.

Bruce's eyes narrowed as Aydin patted his father's cheek. "Later," he ultimately decided. "I need to talk to the girls."

With a grin, Diana turned on her heel, her raven ponytail swaying with the abrupt movement. "Aydin's snack is in the kitchen," she called over her shoulder.

"Let's go get your snack before we go see your sisters," he told his son. "We've got work to do."

Aydin chattered on about his day as Bruce retrieved his son's snack before heading to the entertainment room to find his daughters working diligently on making Christmas cards. He closed the door behind him before setting his son down.

"I need to talk to you girls," Bruce said as he made his way towards them.

"Whatever it is, I didn't do it," Rachel immediately replied without looking up as she switched out a red marker for a green marker.

"Me either," Reesa agreed. "It was Aydin."

Bruce sat down at the table with them as Aydin toddled over to play with his toys. "What are you talking about?"

"Aren't you going to lecture us for giving Ace a haircut?" Reesa asked.

"Ree!" Rachel yelled, scowling at her sister. "You're too quick to confess."

"You did?"

"Um, no," Reesa innocently responded with a grin. "We don't know what you're talking about."

Bruce looked from Rachel to Reesa and back again, deciding he didn't have time to worry about the dog's haircut. "I'm not worried about that," he told them with a dismissive wave of his hand. "I need your help planning a Christmas surprise for your mom."

Both girls immediately brightened with the news, turning their attention to their father. "Really?" Reesa questioned him. "What's the surprise?"

"First, you two have to promise me you won't tell your mother," he made them swear. "This is a surprise. She can't know anything about it."

"We promise," Rachel assured him.

"Yeah, we promise," Reesa agreed.

"This is a pinkie swear promise," he told them, holding out his pinkie.

Both girls pinkie swore with him that they wouldn't tell their mother. They were bubbling with excitement with the prospect of what their father was up to now. "Just tell us what it is already!" Reesa demanded, practically bouncing in her seat.

"I want to take everyone back to Themyscira so your mother and I can renew our wedding vows," he revealed, clearly pleased with himself.

Rachel scrunched up her nose as her eyebrows furrowed in confusion. "Aren't you and mom already married?"

"Yeah, you and mom are married, aren't you?" Reesa asked. "If not, you better jump on that pretty quick before she picks someone else to marry."

"Yes, your mother and I are already married, but married people will sometimes have another ceremony where they renew their vow to love one another," he explained.

"So, you want to have another wedding?" Reesa questioned him. "That's so cool!

"We didn't get to be there for the first one," Rachel pointed out. "Do we get to be in the wedding?"

"Yes, you two can be in the wedding," he confirmed. "I just need to know if you want to have your birthday party with your friends and then leave for Themyscira on Christmas Day or we can go to Themyscira and have your birthday party there along with the wedding."

"I want to go to Themyscira," Rachel readily decided. "My birthday is on Christmas and I want to have the wedding on my birthday."

"Well, that is the day we got married," he revealed, turning his attention to his other daughter. "What do you think, Ree?"

"I'm definitely in for the wedding," she said with a nod. "It's like a double party for our birthdays. We both get our birthdays and a wedding."

"So, is everyone coming?" Rachel asked.

"The whole family," he replied.

Rachel scrunched up her nose with a frown. "Even Damian?"

"Even Damian," he confirmed.

Rachel rolled her eyes in a way that was so reminiscent of her mother. "He's always so grumpy."

"Yeah, he's no fun," Reesa agreed with her sister.

"He's trying to adjust to having a big family," Bruce attempted to explain. "This is all new for him."

"But he's been here for almost a year now," Reesa reminded him. "You'd think he'd be used to us all by now."

"Everyone adjusts in their own time," he reassured them. "It's going to be all right. We'll have a great time."

"So, what about Gotham?" Rachel asked. "No one will be here to protect Gotham."

"I have some friends who will take care of Gotham for us while we're gone."

"Like Barbara?" Ree asked.

"Barbara, Dinah, Helena, Etrigen," he counted off.

A knock at the door forced the conversation to a screeching halt. Diana cracked the door open, peeking inside. "Am I allowed to come in or is this a private conversation?" she asked.

"Sure, mom," Rachel said. "We're just having a meeting."

"A meeting?" she said with a laugh. "What kind of meeting?"

"It's a surprise!" Reesa declared. "You can't know about it yet."

"A Christmas surprise?" Diana asked, her arm slipping around her husband's shoulders as she stood next to him.

"Don't ask any questions, mom," Rachel instructed her, shaking her finger at her. "We can't tell you anything so don't even ask."

"Yeah, mom," Bruce chimed in. "You're going to have to wait to find out what about your Christmas present."

"Won't it be her anniversary present too?" Reesa asked.

"Yes, it's both," Bruce confirmed.

"That's fine," she replied. "Christmas is only a week away now. Did you girls decide what you want to do for your birthdays?"

"We want to go to Themyscira to see Yiayia," Reesa revealed, grinning at her twin sister. "We can have our birthday party there."

"I'll contact mother and let her know we're coming," Diana told them, leaning down and picking Aydin up. "Come along, Aydin. Do you want to talk to Yiayia?"

Aydin kicked his legs excitedly as Diana carried him out of the room. Bruce waited until she was gone before leaning in close to his daughters. "Okay, we have a lot of work to do, girls."

"My little Aydin!" Hippolyta greeted her grandson who toddled towards her.

"Yiyi!" he squealed, laughing as his grandmother swept him up into her arms.

"You have gotten so big," she gushed as she held him close before turning her attention to her granddaughters. "My girls are growing into beautiful young ladies. Your father is going to be chasing all the boys away."

"As will I," Alfred added with a grandfatherly smile. "Not just any boy will be allowed to date my granddaughters."

"Rachel likes a boy at school, but I think he's ugly," Reesa piped up.

"Ree!" Rachel hissed, elbowing her sister. "Do you have to tell everything you know?"

"What boy is this?" Bruce demanded to know.

"It's nobody," Rachel tried to tell him, her cheeks growing pink with the sudden attention on her.

"It's Brandon Mahoney," Reesa revealed with a giggle.

"He's a nice boy," Diana agreed.

"I think we agreed to no dating until they were eighteen," Bruce stated as he glared at his wife.

"It was sixteen, and it's just a crush, Bruce," she tried to soothe him.

"Where are the rest of my grandchildren?" Hippolyta asked, noticing the way Rachel visibly relaxed, releasing a breath of relief.

"They're coming," Diana replied. "They stopped to talk to Artemis and Phillipus."

"I'm so happy you decided to celebrate your birthdays with me," Hippolyta told her granddaughters. "I have some wonderful things planned for all of you while you're here."

"They'd rather have sun and swim in the ocean than enjoy the snowstorm about to hit Gotham," Bruce informed her.

"I'd prefer sand over snow too," Hippolyta agreed as Aydin playfully tugged on her blond hair. "Now, if everyone would head into the palace, Althaia has prepared a feast for Rachel's birthday with all of your favorites."

"Yes!" Ree cried, pumping her fist.

"Sorry, we're coming," Donna called as she quickened her pace to join the family. "I was talking to Artemis and Phillipus."

"So, it held the rest of us up," Dick interjected, receiving a glare from his wife.

"Did I hear something about a feast?" Tim asked, rubbing his hands together excitedly.

"You're always hungry," Damian grumbled.

"You must be Damian," Hippolyta greeted him with a welcoming smile. "I'm Diana's mother Hippolyta."

"You're really the Queen of the Amazons?" he asked with narrowed eyes, appearing unimpressed.

"Yes, I am," she confirmed.

"So, what do you actually do around here?" he asked. "I mean you don't leave, and no one ever comes here so you probably don't have anything to do."

"I rule the Amazon warriors who live on the island," she told him, closing the distance between them. "Did you know that men were never allowed to set foot on this island or they would be tortured and killed?"

"Really?" he asked, eyebrows rising minutely. "What changed?"

"My daughters married men," she explained. "I also have grandsons that I want to feel welcomed here. I felt that it was time to change the laws, so please relax and enjoy your time here. You won't have to worry about being beheaded."

"Her Amazon warriors are some of the very best that I've ever gone up against," Bruce leaned down to whisper in his son's ear.

Bruce bit his bottom lip to keep from laughing as Damian visibly paled. "Thank you…I think," Damian replied as he hurried off to follow his sisters and Diana into the palace.

Hippolyta and Bruce laughed as Aydin reached for his father. "Diana warned me about your son," she told him.

"He takes a little warming up to, but it's worth the effort," he replied as he took Aydin into his arms. "Are we all set for tomorrow?"

"Everyone will be setting up the beach while we open presents tomorrow morning," she assured him.

"I can't wait to see the look on her face," he confessed.

"It was a very sweet idea, Bruce," she agreed. "Diana is going to love your gift."

"I hope so," he replied as they walked towards the palace, discussing details for tomorrow's big day.

"What are you two up to?" Diana asked as Rachel and Reesa dragged her down the hallway of the palace by the hand.

"Just follow us and don't ask questions," Rachel told her, leading her into one of the palace bedrooms.

Entering, Diana found a beautiful white chiton trimmed in gold hanging in the room waiting for her. "What's this all about?" she asked as she made her way to the dress, her fingers gently caressing the delicate gossamer material.

"Just get dressed," Reesa told her. "We'll back to get you in a little bit to get you."

"Don't leave this room until we come for you," Rachel instructed her. "Promise?"

"I promise I'll wait here for you," Diana swore. "Just don't forget about me."

Reesa giggled. "We can't forget about you, mom."

Diana knew that Bruce was behind this, but she had no idea what her husband was up to. She was certain whatever it was that her mother was in on it too. Bruce and her mother had been particularly cozy since they'd arrived yesterday, making her curious as to what they were conspiring about.

She quickly changed into the beautiful chiton before slipping on the golden sandals. She finished adjusting the strap as a knock signaled that the girls had returned. "Come in," she called as she stood to her feet.

"Mom! You look so beautiful!" Rachel exclaimed.

"Just like a princess!" Reesa added.

"She is a princess, Ree," Rachel reminded her with a frown.

"You know what I mean," Reesa countered with a disgruntled look. "Like in a fairytale book."

"You girls look lovely in your new dresses," Diana replied. "Do I get to know what's going on yet?"

"Just come with us," Rachel said, taking one of her hands as Reesa took the other.

"You're about to find out," Reesa assured her.

Diana allowed her twin daughters to lead her out of the palace towards the beach. Following the winding path around a couple of large flowering bushes, she stopped short in stunned disbelief at the sight that awaited her. Her family was standing on the beach, all of them dressed for a special occasion.

Her mother was standing beneath an arch adorned with red poppies and purple aconite. Lit torches created a path that led to her ultimate destination, ribbons tied to each pole and adorned with red poppies. It was a beautiful scene that caused her heart to swell with love for the man who had behind it all.

"Surprise!" her daughters yelled.

Tears instantly filled her eyes as her gaze settled on Bruce who was holding Aydin in his arms. He looked so handsome standing next to her mother, wearing the same outfit that he had worn on their wedding day. Tim and Damian stood next to Bruce while Dick and Donna stood across from them, waiting for her arrival.

Alfred appeared at her side, handing her a small bouquet of poppies. "Merry Christmas and happy anniversary, Miss Diana," he softly said.

Harmonia began to play her harp, signaling the beginning of the ceremony. Rachel and Reesa led the way as Alfred escorted Diana towards her waiting family. Diana brushed away a stray tear as she walked with Alfred, overwhelmed by all the trouble that her family went to just for her.

Reaching her destination, Alfred kissed her cheek before taking Aydin from Bruce. Diana smiled softly at her husband, overwhelmed by her gift. "Happy anniversary," Bruce softly said as he took her hand in his.

"This…this is amazing," she murmured, glancing around at her gathered family. "Thank you…all of you."

"Time to renew your wedding vows," Hippolyta said. "I must say that I had my doubts when you first chose to marry this man, but he has more than proven himself a hundred times over. He has turned out to be the best husband and father for your children that you could have ever asked for, Diana. I'm proud to call him my son-in-law."

"And co-conspirator," Diana murmured with a grin.

"I thought I was her favorite son-in-law," Dick leaned over and whispered in Donna's ear only to receive an elbow to the ribs.

Hippolyta ignored her other son-in-law, responding to her daughter instead. "Guilty and proud of it."

Damian watched as Queen Hippolyta spoke about Bruce and Diana's love for one another and how it had only grown stronger and deeper since they had first committed their lives to each other. When he'd first arrived at Wayne Manor, he'd been determined to not like his stepmother, but somehow along the way, he'd found himself warming up to her to the point that he actually really liked her.

These strangers had managed to become family to him in ways that he'd never dreamed. Initially, he'd been quite reluctant to join the family on Themyscira for Christmas and his sisters' birthdays. He thought for certain that he was going to hate every minute of being here, wishing he were back in Gotham patrolling the city, but he found he was actually enjoying himself.

Damian was shocked when a gorgeous woman suddenly appeared beside Hippolyta, producing a white ribbon that she wrapped around Diana's wrist before tying it around Bruce's. Lady Aphrodite blessed their union once more, placing her hands upon their wrists as she spoke of their love.

The goddess disappeared in a flash of light, leaving Hippolyta to pronounce them husband and wife once more. With a smirk on his lips, Bruce tugged on the ribbon that bound them, drawing her to him. He kissed her slowly…deeply, savoring the intimate moment he was sharing with the woman who held his heart for so long now.

Everyone cheered as they kissed, reminding them they weren't alone on the beach. Bruce reluctantly broke the kiss, pulling her into his arms. "I love you, Diana," he told her.

"I love you too," she replied as she buried her face in his neck. "This was the best anniversary present you could have ever given me."

"I'm glad you like it."

"I wish I had gotten you something more than the engraved watch," she sadly said with a shake of her head. "That pales mightily in comparison to all of this."

"No, you're all I need, princess," he promised her. "With you, I have everything."

Her forehead rested against his cheek, a contented sigh escaping. "I feel the same way," she murmured as she tilted her head to capture his lips again.

"Enough mushy stuff," Reesa decided. "It's my birthday too!"

"I believe there is a strawberry cake waiting inside for the birthday girl," Hippolyta revealed with a grin.

"That's my favorite!" Reesa excitedly declared. "Let's go already!"

"Go ahead," Bruce said. "We'll be right there."

"Yeah, right," Tim said with a laugh. "We'll see them sometime tomorrow if we're lucky."

"We promise," Diana swore.

Everyone headed towards the palace for the celebration that awaited them, giving the couple a moment of privacy. Diana watched everyone leave, turning to find Bruce staring at her with a look of adoration. "What?" she murmured.

"You," he simply replied. "If it weren't for you being so bold as to send me on that scavenger hunt on the Watchtower, none of this would have ever happened. There would be no Rachel, Reesa, and Aydin. I doubt Dick or even Tim would be a part of my life. I would've eventually closed myself off to everyone and everything like the Bruce I saw in the future."

Diana's hand came to rest against his cheek, a tender smile gracing her face. "I thought you needed a little push," she teased. "I'm just happy that you completed the scavenger hunt."

"Me too," he agreed, kissing her with a passion that was barely controlled.

"Come on, you two!" Damian yelled. "You're missing the party!"

Bruce and Diana laughed as he took her hand in his. "Are you still sure you're happy we have children?" she asked as they walked towards the palace.

"Some days…most days," he replied. "Do I even want to know about the girls giving Ace a haircut the other day?"

"No…no, you don't," she assured him as they entered the palace, anxious to see what the future held for their family.
