I don't own Home Alone
A/N: Hello everyone! Before I continue this author's note I just wanted to say thank you for reading and your reviews thus far. I decided to add Part I to the chapters to indicate the first movie and we have now entered Part II of the fanfic after so long. I thought that it was best to end it where Harry, Marv, and Amy fled. I will try to detail what has happened to them and the McCallister's. Also, some quotes will be straight from the movie during the first couple of chapters.
Also, there is a John Hughes movie reference in this chapter. May drop them in every now and then.
Enjoy!
School, life, and work always had that magic where people were too engaged in what they were doing. Either there was a project, book report, or an upcoming exam that needed attention. This form of preoccupation was enough to make time fly by and before anyone knew it, the fall season had quietly passed and then came the winter holidays. It was a tradition in the McCallister household where both families got together and planned their holiday getaway. This time it wasn't anything international like last year. That day at the diner, Megan and Linnie had announced that they wanted to go to Florida for their holiday vacation and the family had been considering it. Well, everyone but one young McCallister.
Kevin McCallister was in his parent's bedroom sitting on their bed as he watched the nightly game show. He held a Talkboy in his hand and recorded the show before replaying it back. It works he thought to himself with a secretive smile.
Suddenly Kate McCallister, sporting a new and elegant haircut walked into the room. She had surveyed the rest of her children, making sure that they packed everything the night before and not forgetting anything that they needed. "Honey are your bags packed yet?" she asked Kevin, thinking that he was probably procrastinating.
"Yes," Kevin answered into the Talkboy before replaying his response back to her. This time, he was able to pack what he needed and wasn't as reluctant as he was last year. Having remained home alone, well he wasn't actually home alone since his sister Becky was also with him, he had been able to take care of himself and he felt that he had grown from that experience for a nearly ten year old boy.
Kate was caught off guard as she looked up at her son's echo. "Everything I put out?"
"Yes," Kevin answered into the Talkboy before it echoed back to her.
It took a bit for Kate to stop herself from rolling her eyes. For the past couple of weeks, Kevin had been having a grand time using the Talkboy in recording his family members' voices and then replaying it back to them. Kate had almost confiscated the Talkboy from him but the last thing that she needed was resentment coming from her son. She felt that she had been him through that enough last year after leaving him home alone and she didn't want to experience that again. "Did you also see what grandma sent you?" she asked him.
Kevin tapped his chin with a finger. "Let me guess, Donald Duck slippers?"
Kate chuckled and held a plastic bag that had a clown's face in the front. "Close. An inflatable clown to play with in the pool."
Kevin took the clown in his hands and briefly looked him over. It was an interesting choice for a toy to use in the pool, but Kevin felt it wasn't necessary especially when going to a warmer climate. Christmas was about gathering around the tree, cozying up with a cup of hot chocolate, singing Christmas carols, and watching Christmas movies. Florida was such a warm climate that there wouldn't be any snow in there. Megan and Linnie had tried their hardest to make Kevin feel excited about going there and the one thing they had mentioned was Disney Land.
Who cares? Kevin had thought. No matter how many amusements the park had, it would never live up to what Christmas was. "Why do we have to go to Florida?" he asked Kate, "there's no Christmas trees there."
Kate let out a sigh. She knew that he was not excited about this trip but throughout the whole year, her and Peter had worked so hard to buy tickets for the whole family and it was the only time of the year that they could spend with Peter's extended family. "Kevin what is it with you and Christmas Trees?" Kate asked, trying her hardest not to sound too annoyed with her son but due to all the packing and tonight's events, she did not want to debate.
"How can you have Christmas without a Christmas tree, mom?" Kevin protested.
Kevin was far too young to know how the actual world functioned, or so Kate knew. There were other people in the world who couldn't afford Christmas trees, or even the holiday for that matter. They made with what they could to enjoy the holiday. "We can find a nice fake silver one, or decorate a palm tree," she answered him, hoping that they could negotiate on that.
Kevin didn't answer her for his attention was caught by a commercial on the television. Turning his Talkboy over to the commercial he recorded the information that the advertiser. He was too engrossed in the commercial that he didn't hear his father walking into the room. He exchanged a conversation with Kate about his attire and then turned his attention over to Kevin.
"Kevin," Peter McCallister caught his son's attention, "you'd better put your tie on or we'll be late for the Christmas pageant."
"It's in the bathroom," Kevin answered, "and I can't go in. Uncle Frank is in there taking a shower. He says that if I walk in there and see him, I'd never feel like a real man." He noticed the look that his parents gave him and shrugged his shoulders, "or whatever that means."
I'm gonna need to have a talk with my brother Peter thought before letting out a small chuckle. "I'm sure that he was just kidding. Just run in there, get your tie, get out, and don't look."
If you say so Kevin thought and jumped off his parents' bed. Making his way down the hallway, he spotted his sisters' bedroom and peeked inside. Becky McCallister was placing a neatly folded shirt into her suitcase. She wore a black cardigan, black pants, and her hair was tied into two pigtails. She turned around and grab another neatly folded shirt before her eyes fell on Kevin. "Hey," she brightened and smiled to him. "What's going on Kevin?"
Kevin raised an eyebrow and walked into the room. "Since when did you learn to fold your clothes?"
"Since Linnie taught me," Becky chuckled and zipped up her suitcase.
Kevin smiled up at his sister. "It's good that you two are talking again."
Now that Becky thought about it, it was a silly disagreement that she had with Linnie and she had held her resentment for months over her sister. However, after seeing how happy her sister and her best friend, Lucas, were with one another why should she ruin their happiness? Everyone in the world deserved happiness and her sister and best friend were not an exception. After talking this problem out with her sister, and in a decent manner, Becky had felt much better. As for Lucas, she never confided her feelings in how she had felt for him. After all, she was only a best friend to him and it was better that way.
"Me too," Becky said to him, "but aren't you supposed to be getting ready for the pageant? The show starts at eight."
"My tie is in the bathroom," Kevin said to him, "and Uncle Frank is in there. How does it feel to work backstage for the school's shows?"
After she had been 'fired' from her position on the school's newspaper, Becky thought that it was better to invest her time in something different. She had decided to work as a stagehand for school concerts, plays, and committees. It was a type of experience that was completely different than what she was used to. She had to have all the props ready, make sure that they lighting was perfectly set, the sound was good, and the backgrounds were the way that they were supposed to be. Her first time had been a disaster. During a school play, she had given the wrong prop to one of the student's and used the wrong sound effect for another. However, the students were able to improvise through her mistakes. The teacher, however, had been kinder that Mrs. Jakub and had given her tips on how rectify her mistakes. From then on, Becky had grown confident in her abilities as a stagehand. Even though she had changed her 'occupation,' she still kept an eye out on the school's newspaper. This girl, Allison, had taken Becky's position and worked alongside with her brother, Jeff. For a girl who was quiet, she was quite the skilled writer.
"I kind of like it," Becky answered, "it is very fun seeing how the production is run for behind the scenes. Tonight though I have to be very careful. I have to make sure that every prop stays put and that you guys are in the right positions. Then," her lips tilted into a bemused smile as she looked at her little brother, "I have to make sure that the spotlight is on you when your solo comes in." When she said that, she tapped his nose with her finger causing him to blink.
"Just don't mess up," Kevin joked and zipped out of the room before Becky pounced on him and gave him a series of tickles.
Becky shook her head and smiled. Even though Kevin joked, she knew that he had faith in her. Ever since they were left home alone last year, the two had become more close than they already were. She had taken care of him and he had done the same for her during the night of Christmas Eve. To this day, Becky shivered at the idea of what would have happened if Mr. Marley hadn't stopped those two robbers in time.
And once he's through, I wouldn't mind playing connect-the-dots with those freckles of yours the tall robber's threat came to her mind, sending chills down her spine. Becky didn't want to think about what would have happened but he had sounded more threatening than the shorter robber. Taking a deep breath, she tried to push the memory out of her mind and focused on what she was supposed to do for the show. Suddenly, her attention was snatched away when Uncle Frank yelled at Kevin followed by the bathroom door slamming and him continuing to sing again. She placed a hand on her mouth to keep a laughter from escaping.
At least that was something that put her in a better mood.
