I don't own Home Alone
Enjoy!
Kevin stomped his way up to the third floor and had flopped onto the bed. The room was slightly cold but he didn't care. The last thing that he wanted was to remain downstairs with a bunch of family members that were easily manipulated in his older brother's lies. Why couldn't this holiday start off on the right foot unlike last year? In his mind, Kevin ran through the situation once more, only to feel more annoyed about it. His brother had humiliated him, not only in front of his family, but also the school. And the fact that Uncle Frank had laughed with no sense of remorse, Kevin never wanted to see his face again.
Cheapskate he thought to himself and stared off into an empty wall. He heard the door opening from the third floor and footsteps coming up the stairs. If it was anyone from downstairs, he wanted for them to go away.
"Kevin," a familiar voice came to his ears and it not no one that he was expecting.
Becky he thought as he turned around and looked at the redhead making her way towards him. Her braids were undone and her hair had taken a form that made it look like waves. She had changed into her pajamas and was just about to get ready for bed. "At least you're the only person that I want to see up here," Kevin said to her.
"I will take that as a compliment," Becky smiled as she jumped right beside her brother and fixed his hair with her hand. "Are you feeling okay?"
"No!" Kevin answered a bit too abruptly at her question. "What is the point of even going on our vacation tomorrow when I can't trust anyone in this family? When one of my older siblings does anything, the blame always comes to me. I've had enough of it."
If Becky remembered, this wasn't anything new in the McCallister household. Whenever an older sibling did something, the youngest was blamed for it and if she recalled, there had been moments when she had done something and blamed it on her younger sisters. Now it had fallen on Kevin and she knew how much he didn't appreciate being wrongly accused of something that his older siblings had started. "I know," she nodded her head to him, "it's just like last year." Even though everything had happened quickly that day, she still remembered that milk had been spilt everywhere. "Sometimes no matter what age we are in, life can be unfair. But you're a tough cookie Kevin, you're not afraid to speak up."
"Yeah and they tell me 'don't talk back to an adult' when I try to defend myself," Kevin said to Becky. "And did you see Uncle Frank how he was laughing his head off at the play? And what he said to me downstairs?"
Becky rolled her eyes and shook her head when she thought about that moment. "Don't worry about him," Becky said to her brother, "he's cheap anyway."
Kevin was about to laugh when he heard the door opening from downstairs and footsteps making their way into the room. He glanced at Becky who looked ahead of her only to see their mother walking towards them.
"Hi," she said to her children but none of them answered her. Kate McCallister knew that Kevin was more upset about what happened than her oldest son but what she also didn't like was how Becky spoke to them before she disappeared upstairs. "You know Kevin, last time we tried to take a trip we had a problem just like this."
So...wait a minute Becky thought when her mother spoke to them this is more about the family trip than Kevin's feelings is it? How much she wanted to ask her mother this question, but she bit her tongue.
"Yeah with me getting crapped on," Kevin answered her.
Kate eyes opened at Kevin's words but she dismissed them. "I don't care for your choice of words," she said to him, "that's not what happened last year, that's not what's happening this year. Buzz apologized to you," she then turned her eyes over to Becky, "and Becky, what you said was uncalled for to Buzz and to the family. I am shocked that you would ever think of saying something like that. I expected a lot better from you."
Becky glared at her mother. She had not been part of the argument between Buzz and Kevin, but she had created her own problem. "I'm just tired of these lies and Kevin being blamed for everything," she said to her mother.
"Yeah," Kevin jumped in, "and Buzz called me a trout-sniffer. He didn't mean it, he was just sucking up to you."
Kate looked from her daughter and then at her son. "Okay," she said. The more she continued this, the more time she was going to spend arguing with her son about who was right and who was wrong. She had another duty in her hands and it was to make sure that everyone was packed and that they went to bed early for tomorrow. "Why don't you two just sit up here and think things over? When you're ready to apologize to Buzz and to the rest of the family you can come down." She turned on her heel to make her way down the stairs, but she stopped when Kevin snapped at her.
"I'm not apologizing to Buzz!" he said, "I'd rather kiss a toilet seat."
Ew Becky made a face at what Kevin said, but she understood where he was coming from. Why apologize to someone when they didn't mean their own apology in the first place? "I'm staying up here with Kevin," Becky said to her mother, "he doesn't deserve my apology after he did."
"Fine," Kate said, "then you two can stay up here the rest of the night." Kate felt her voice getting stern as she spoke to her children. She didn't intend to become angry, but she was just tired arguing all the time. She didn't want to start off this vacation with her children fighting amongst one another.
"That's fine," Kevin said, "I don't want to go down there anyway. I can't trust anyone in this family, except for Becky, and you know what? If I had my own money, I'd go on my vacation alone, without any of you guys. And I'd have the most fun in my whole life."
"You got your wish last year, maybe you'd get it again this year," Kate said.
"I hope so," Kevin replied back.
Upon those words, Kate turned on her heel again and walked downstairs. Why did her children have to be like this? 'Hate' was such a strong word, but this is what it looked like to Kate. It was hard being a mother to six children and the one thing that worried Kate was if she was doing a good job at being their mother. The last thing that she wanted was to have that same feeling that she had last year. That she had failed at being a good mother to Kevin.
Once the door had closed, Kevin fell back on the pillows of the bed and stared up at the ceiling. Becky mimicked his actions and then turned her head to look at him. "You want to stay home alone again?" she asked him.
"If it means that I don't have to deal with Buzz, or Uncle Frank, or anyone that I can't trust then yeah," Kevin replied to her, "and we did have a good holiday last year together."
"Yeah," Becky said as she rubbed her eyes, feeling that sleep coming in, "that it until Scrooge and the Grinch decided to rob our house."
It would have ended badly if Mr. Marley hadn't come in to rescue them. Even though they were in a predicament, Kevin knew that there was going to be a good outcome out of all that. "But we don't have to worry about them," Kevin said, "they're in jail." When his sister didn't respond, Kevin turned his head and looked to see that his sister had fallen into a deep sleep. Smiling, he reached forward and pulled the blanket on top of them.
Perhaps a good night's sleep was what was needed for a hectic morning the next day.
