Hitchhiking in the back of a fish truck was not exactly the way Harry planned the rest of their escape. The inside of the truck was cold and it smelled atrocious but through hours of being in there, it was like his senses got used to the aroma of it. Behind him, Marv was lying against on the of the crates and kept himself busy with the roll of tape that he had found. The noise of the tape broke the silence in the truck as Marv was wrapping it around his glove. It was strange how many different ways his companion found ways to entertain himself, but at least the injury that he had suffered was healing and he moved his arm better than before. During that time, Amy had managed to convince him that they needed to go to a hospital for Marv, but Harry had always refused due to them being on the run. However, his wife had shown her disregard and went to the hospital anyway without Harry knowledge. He didn't know how or why no one was able to see that they were missing prisoners, but at least Marv was able to get the proper care that he needed.
He didn't know how he was able to contain his anger through all of that. Let alone the fact that Marv had gotten between them before an argument took place. That's how the rest of their escape had been going. Just a whole lot of arguments to the point where Amy had exploded and decided to go her own way. Harry had threatened her prior that if she left, she would still be an accessory to their escape but he didn't know if she was willing to rat him out to the police. If she did, then she didn't know him as well as she thought. He had been through a lot last year up to where he was now. With trying to keep his cover, robbing homes, then having his past coming to haunt him, his wife leaving, and then this whole escape he felt that he had turned lethal. Being in his position, it was all about survival at this point and sometimes he had to be lethal to get through it. His thoughts were ten torn away when he heard the noise from the tape. Rolling his eyes over to Marv, he gave him a disapproving glance. "What're you doing Marv?" he asked him.
Marv suddenly looked up and adjusted the tape of his hand. He moved his fingers against texture of the tape and nodded his head, as if he had created the greatest invention yet. Before he could answer, the two bandits felt a bump against the road and they scrambled against the crates. Hearing the noises from the busy street, when the back door of the truck was opened, Harry felt the familiarity with this city. Both he and Marv raised their heads and looked outside.
"Here we are Marv," Harry announced to him, "New York City, the Land of Opportunity." It was great being in the fresh air after being transported from one state to another by van. The two of them had to remain out of sight as much as possible before anyone saw them and through Harry's quick thinking, they were able to manage just that. Maybe he was better off without Amy considering how she had been throughout the whole situation. She probably would have blown their cover and they all would have been caught. However, that did not mean that she was off the hook easily. He then took a deep breath and looked over at Marv, "do you smell that? You know what that is?"
Marv took a deep breath and nodded his head. "Fish," he answered him.
"It's freedom," Harry corrected him.
For a minute, Marv thought that he had been sniffing the item that was right in front of them. He took another whiff and looked over at Harry. "No it's fish."
That was one good reason to smack Marv right upside the head but Harry contained his irritation. "It's freedom and it's money."
"Okay, okay," Marv said, "it's freedom."
Harry surveyed the area and motioned for Marv to follow him. "Let's get out of here before somebody sees us."
"And it's fish," Marv then added and followed Harry out of the truck.
After taking a whole tour of New York, both Kevin and Becky had been amazed of the sights that they had seen. They drove through Queensboro Bridge in the taxi cab that they had ordered from the airport and headed towards Midtown towards Radio City Music Hall, over to the Empire Diner in Chelsea, and Chinatown. In Chinatown, Kevin had taken the opportunity and purchased a stack of fireworks and Becky questioned the reason as to why he did it.
"For a celebration," he had simply answered, but it had sounded very cryptic to Becky.
Battery Park had been their next stop where Kevin and Becky had the privilege to look at the Statue of Liberty. Then their tour ended with being on the top of the observation deck of the World Trade Center. Every single location that they had gone to, both siblings were breath taken at how beautiful New York was. However, with such tours the two had grown a bit tired after they crammed in as much sight seeing as they could. There were more landmarks to go through but it was going to take, perhaps a whole month to get through all of them.
"I hope we can see some of the museums," Becky then spoke up as she and her brother walked through Central Park. "New York has some very nice museums."
"And image how they are decorated during the holiday season," Kevin said to her. Going to a museum would be nice, but Kevin just wanted to find a place to relax and he knew just the location to where they could go. Looking up in front of him, he saw that familiar building that he had seen on television when his family was getting ready for the Christmas pageant. "The Plaza Hotel. New York's most exciting hotel experience," Kevin said as if he was the one announcing it on television.
Becky's eyes scanned the plaza and she was mesmerized at how impressive it was. She had seen commercials about the hotel and she hoped that the inside was as lavish as they said it was. She could picture herself curled up inside a warm bed under comfortable sheets and fluffy pillows. Oh if Lucas could see her now, he would be very jealous! Sleep sounded very nice at the moment but they just had to cross this park to get there. "Then what are we waiting for?" she asked her brother, "lead the way!"
Kevin took that as his initiative and lead the way for both of them. They assimilated within a crowd of people that waited for the street lights to change. So many people here Kevin thought but he was not going to get distracted by that and get lost. When the lights changed, he and Becky started to walk across the street. Just act normal Kevin thought to himself, knowing for sure that people were wondering why a child was walking on the street alone. But he had his older sister with him and for sure there were teenagers that walked alone on the streets of New York as well. Keeping his sights towards the street, Kevin felt his shoulder bumping with someone but he didn't turn around to look. There was no need to excuse himself from that small bump. They were going to be just fine.
Feeling a force hitting his arm, Harry turned and looked over his shoulder as to whom was the perpetrator that bumped into him. What the... he thought when he noticed a small child wearing a winter outfit and carrying a bag along with a red hair girl disappearing into the crowd. For a second there, he thought his eyes were playing tricks on him. He shook his head and turned his head once more to see but those two had disappeared. He couldn't help but feel a form of familiarity when he saw those two, but then again, what were the chances of meeting them again in New York?
Sensing that Harry was distracted, Marv looked over to him. "What's the matter?" he asked.
"Thought I saw something," Harry answered him.
That answer made the taller bandit all the more curious. Perhaps he could get a better look and help out his comrade in seeking out what he was looking at. There was an advantage in being the tall one and that he could easily see from the crowd. It wasn't until that his distraction caused Marv to stumble over towards a young blond woman. The hand that he had wrapped in tape was stuck on her bag and the two of them played tug of war with it.
Damn, she's gorgeous! Marv though as his eyes looked at the blond woman up and down. Come on Marv, put your charisma to the test and the only way he could do that was to talk the language of love. "Pardonne moi, mon chérie."
Where the hell did he learn that?! Harry thought, completely taken off guard that Marv could speak in French. Before any of the bandits knew it, the blond woman was not impressed and replied to Marv's intent with a slap across his face. Complete idiot Harry thought when he saw the flabbergasted look on Marv's face. "Serves you right! Come on, let's go!" he yelled at him.
"I think she likes me," Marv dreamily said and placed a hand over his cheek causing it to get stuck. He pulled his arm away and then followed Harry.
"Don't get distracted now, Marv," Harry warned him, "we barely made it out with one woman. We don't need another one."
Marv could sense that Harry was still enraged about what had happened between him and Amy and if he was being honest, Marv had been shocked that she had decided to leave them in the dust. Before she had found out about their real intentions last Christmas, Marv had been ecstatic of the fact that he had place to go to where someone was kind enough to offer him a warm meal. In a way, he felt welcomed to their small family but now, and just like Harry, he felt like they had nothing. "Where do you think she could be?" Marv asked her.
"Dead in a gutter for all I care," Harry responded and Marv was shocked when he heard such an answer.
"Harry come on," Marv said to him, "she's your wife."
"Was my wife, Marv," Harry said and motioned towards the ringless finger, "but not anymore. She should consider herself lucky not to see my face again because if she does she's gonna eat that last bullet."
God Marv thought, regretting the fact that he had even inquired such a question towards Harry. He didn't know what he would do if he was in Harry's situation. He would feel betrayed but would he go as far as to kill his wife just like Harry? A shiver ran down his spine at the thought of that and he tried to push away that thought. "So where are we staying for the night?"
It wasn't going to be a comfortable place that was for sure, but it was good enough to keep them into hiding. Then again, no one would ever go to a place that had been abandoned for years. "I know the place," Harry said to him and the two disappeared into the southern part of New York.
