AN: wow! so sorry that this hasn't been updated in months but I'm hoping to revive it now with more consistent updates! (I already have the next few chapters planned out so shouldn't be as slow between updates!)

Paper trail

Sirius did not speak one word to Jane at lunch. In fact he made it a point to ignore her. When Jane waved the three Gryffindor boys (Remus still nowhere to be found) over to sit by her, Sirius grabbed Peter and James's arm and pulled them into a seat nearby to them at the opposite end of the table. She found it quite odd. She thought back to their earlier conversation. He now knew that her Mother had told her to stay clear from anyone in the Black family, specifically Sirius himself.

"She told you to stay away from me didn't she?" Sirius said softly. "Look, she's probably right. You've got to be careful. Please don't meddle in this"... "Please. Jane," Sirius grabbed her hand again. "Don't get involved. Listen to your mother and watch out for whoever she said to. Including me. It's probably for the best."

The look on his face after he had spoken was almost haunting. His eyes were distant and far away. Not only that but he looked like he knew something that she didn't. But most importantly he looked pained. It was terrifying and Jane found herself wondering just what exactly happens in the Black family.

Jane couldn't help herself as she looked down the table at him, trying to catch the Black heir's eye. He made it a point to not even glance at her. Did he think that because her Mother told her to stay away from him, she wanted him to stay away from her? She hadn't meant for him to feel that way.

She wanted to talk to him. But now wasn't the time, they were still looking for Lupin and Jane herself was still trying to figure out what had happened between her Father and The Lupins.

After lunch it was back to the library. Information relating to her mother or wizarding genealogy was not helping. She had put those away before lunch and felt herself back at the beginning. (The only thing she had learned was that Sirius Black knew something about those muggle attacks and it wasn't a good thing.)

But her father had mentioned in his letter to her that there was some kind of incident involving the Lupins. Even though it was supposedly some big secret. But there had to be something. She found herself leafing through different Daily Prophets. Whatever had happened between her family and Remus's must have happened when she was too young to even really remember Remus. She supposed. So she started looking through daily prophets dated in 1965 and sooner. She hoped this wouldn't get her nowhere.

The moon had already risen over the castle and Jane was still flickering through old daily Prophets. She didn't read every single one. She merely skimmed the headlines and subtitles. She pulled one flip through it and stopped if she found anything that caught her eye. She found her own name or her family's name every once and awhile, along with Sirius's. Even James's or his parents.

Princess Jane Sighted Leaving Diagon Alley's Charm School. That one was from early September of 1966 when she started pre-Hogwarts tutoring. An old moving photo of her leaving the school hand in hand with her mother. Her Mother waved pleasantly to the crowd while Jane squinted and tried to hide her face. (Jane was surprised The Prophet hadn't already said something about her being at Hogwarts. It had been five days since they had started. Surely some pureblood would have blabbered by now.)

The Blacks visit Royal dignitaries in France, was another title from June of the same year. With a five year old Sirius standing stoically and pin straight next to his parents who shook hands gracefully with the Royal wizarding family of France. Jane vaguely remembered that the Black family had originally come from France. And were just as prominent purebloods there as they were in the English Wizarding World.

Fleamont Potter sells multi-million galleon Sleekeasy company. May of 1965. She remembered the huge party the Potter's had had for their retirement. That was when she and James had decided to help celebrate by taking said Sleekeasy potion and sneaking some hair dye into it the night before. Uncle Fleamont had shown up to his own party with bright blue hair.

Finally she came across something that caught her eye. On the cover of the February issue in large bolded letters read: Fenrir Greyback: Werewolf at Large. The face of a fearsome looking man with large sharp teeth snarled at her. The name Greyback was strikingly familiar to her. But not enough for her to have any real context. She vaguely remembered her parents utter the name over breakfast or dinner several times with disdain. And it was because she hovered on the unfamiliar name for a second longer than all the other ones that she noticed the name Lupin written in the article a few sentences down.

Fenrir Greyback: Werewolf at Large.

Just over a month ago Fenrir Greyback stood trial for the murder of two muggle children on the outskirts of Cardiff. Though he was released from the trial due to the fact that he appeared to be a muggle. However, Lyall Lupin of the Department for the Regulation and Control of Magical Creatures had insisted that Greyback was an unregistered werewolf. The committee had no proof or way to confirm such an accusation and Greyback was expected to be obliviated and released. But before this could happen Greyback escaped leaving ministry officials shocked at the turn of events.

The last full moon confirms Greyback as a werewolf. During the recent full moon Greyback was caught attacking and attempting to kill another child. The family was a wizarding family and managed to get Greyback off the child. The child in question (who will remain unnamed for their safety) is currently in critical condition at St Mungoes.

Greyback was not apprehended and is still at large and dangerous. Parents are asked to ensure that their children remain indoors during the full moon.

She reread the article several times. Instinctively she knew that this had something to do with the incident her father had written about though she wasn't sure what it meant exactly. She quickly went back over the Daily Prophet's and pulled every single one that she could find that mentioned Fenrir Greyback or werewolves or the DRCMC.

"The library is closed," A seventh year ravenclaw croaked in her ear causing her to jump.

"Oh! Dear Merlin," Jane exclaimed. "You frightened me!"

The older girl just rolled her eyes at her disdain.

"I'm sorry," Jane continued. "I just lost track of time. Would you perhaps know if I would be able to check these out?"

"It's a library," the girl said plainly. "Although Madame Cygnett hates to be kept late."

"Right, thank you Miss…?" Jane said with a questioning tone for her name.

"Irma Pince." The girl said curtly before she turned sharply and walked off.

Jane knew it was wrong, she really did. But she just knew that the article she read had something to do with Remus Lupin and she doubted it was something he'd want the rest of the school to find out about, whatever it was. So she quickly and carefully slipped all the news articles she found into her bag and quickly left the library before anyone could stop her.

She made it into the common room just before curfew to find James, Sirius, and Peter sprawled across the couches. Most of the other students having already gone to bed. James and Sirius looked up sharply at the opening of the portrait hole and only slumped back down with identical groans at the sight of Jane. Peter was fast asleep on the couch he had laid claim too.

"I take it Lupin hasn't shown up yet?" Jane said with a quirk of her eyebrow.

"No and we've looked all day!" James exclaimed.

"Face it, mate," Sirius said solemnly. "The bloke just doesn't like us."

"Hey you don't know if that's true," Jane defended him. "He's probably just still adjusting."

"Well I see that the same could not be said of you," James said. "You've seemed to be just fine. Did you spend all day on the library?"

"No, not all day." Jane said. "I stopped to eat."

"We didn't see you at dinner," Sirius said.

"Really? I'm surprised you notice seeing as you spent all of lunch avoiding me," Jane huffed.

"We did no such thing." Sirius protested. "We just didn't see you, well I didn't anyways."

"Right of course," Jane said.

James glanced between the two, once again feeling like he had missed a whole side of the conversation.

"Well you weren't the only one not at dinner," James cut in between the tension. "Lupin was a no show at both lunch or dinner."

"Perhaps you just didn't see him," Jane suggested. "Maybe he had eaten before you got there."

"We went to dinner early and we're the last ones to leave." James said.

"Well maybe he went to bed early," she said. "While you were at dinner."

"Checked that," Sirius dismissed quickly.

"Well perhaps when you get around to making that map you can make one that tells you where everyone is while you're at it." Jane suggested. "Anyways, I'm going to bed. Let me know if you find Lupin."

She climbed the stairs and went to her dormitory. Most of her dormmates were already going about their nightly routines. when no one was looking she stuffed the newspapers into the bottom of her trunk rummaging through it to make it look like she was trying to find her nightrobes.

When she glanced up and out the window she noticed the full moon shining brightly in the clear night sky. She shivered as she recalled the article of Fenrir Greyback. Suddenly her heart stopped.

Greyback was known for murdering children as a werewolf. Her parents thought that the Lupin child was dead. A child was attacked after Mr. Lupin called out Greyback for being a werewolf.

And Remus Lupin was missing on the day of the full moon.
