We had finally arrived in Nova Ferra. We were anxious, atleast me and Dew were... Both of us are wanted men, most certainly. And the possibility of them knowing us is quite high.
But when we arrived mid-day, we weren't expecting the sort of welcome we witnessed. The sounds of guns, metal and fire rocked the town, seemingly being raided right now.
I certainly wouldn't allow it to continue. I want my scrap to build, I will get my scrap! Others be damned, I was going to get my scrap...
Thomas is sitting at the locomotive's controls, the child being next to them and asking curiously about the many controls on the engine.
"What does this one do?" The boy asks, waiting for Thomas to respond. The man was smoking a cigar and answered the kid's question, "It's something that deploys sand onto the track, it helps with the wheels getting a better grip."
"Oh, what's that button?" "That's a light switch. Specifically, for the front of the engi-" Thomas was cut off by the woman slamming the metal door that lead to the pathway front of the locomotive. The act surprises Dew, the child jumped in fright and Thomas raised an eyebrow, having noticed the woman approaching beforehand.
"We have trouble at the front." She says seriously, "The settlement might be under attack by bandits." She states, getting a wide-eyed look from Dew, the boy looking fearful all of the sudden, but strangely Thomas had a small grin on his face.
"So? What we got? A few dozen groups is all?" Thomas asks, but the answer he got had mildly surprised him, "The tracks here have recently been used."
Dew then spoke up, "Hang on, you mean that truck we fought yesterday ain't the last?" His face slowly paling, "I-If that's the case, who knows what they might have?!"
"I-I'm scared!" The boy interrupts, "Th-There's more bad me-men!"
Thomas lets out a chuckle, "Sounds fun." He comments, getting strange looks from everyone else. He noticed this, "What? I may have developed a slight addiction to adrenaline." He commented.
The woman sigh, "If you get us killed, I'll kill you." "How? You'd be dead." "I'll haunt you." "Good luck with that. You'd take a while to find me." "I will roam the ends of this land to get you." "Trust me, you won't."
The scarlet haired woman glared at the moustachioed man, opting to finally stop commenting.
It was then that Dew decided to break up the two and say outloud his thoughts, "Look. We could continue do-doing this forever, but does anyone have a plan for the troublesome bandits that we will be going up against?"
Thomas starts mumbling to himself, seemingly for nothing, but just as quickly he smiles and states, "Got one."
This brought their attention to him, "You lot take off towards the town, I'll stay here and build up something real fine." He states.
"WHAT?!" The other two adults yell, as if either with anger or disbelief. The woman states, "I'm not risking my or my br- The child's life! I will-"
Thomas snaps back with anger as well, "Shut your damn mouth up and go! I will be doing something that might get you two killed, so shut it and move!" He yelled, suddenly pissed off.
Dew backs off but the scarlett haired woman keeps glaring. Eventually, she also relents and says, "Come on, let's go." To the two other people.
"What?" Dew says, walking out along with her, "Hang on, we can't ust leave him there and-" "I said let's go." The woman snaps at the bear, "If he has a death wish, then let him go ahead."
The bear faunus stutters in shock, but ultimately sighs and follows along. The two leaving the engine.
The boy was about to leave, as the locomotive was slowing down. He turned to look at the man and asked "Will you be okay, Mr moustachioed man?"
This caused Thomas to pause and then speak in a soft tone of voice, "I'll try to be, kid. If not, you'll still be able to see a pretty awesome fight." He answered, "Now go follow those two. I'll stay here and make some... adjustments, to the engine. 1 hour, tops."
The kid nods and leaves, the locomotive having gone to a full stop.
Thomas lets out a sigh, looking out the window and seeing the woman, the kid and the bear faunus leave. He lets out a single tear, "Damn it, couldn't I've done it a bit better? I feel like crap now." He mutters, then shakes his head and takes out his PDA.
"Right. Let's see... vehicle, boosters, manufacturers, hm... Loading... Loading... Ah! Show me the results."

TORGUE CORPORATION CREATION ADD-ON
DO YOU NEED MORE EXPLOSIONS IN YOUR LIFE?! IF SO, THIS IS JUST FOR YOU! WE HERE AT TORGUE HELP CREATE EXPLOSIONS EASILY WITH S* THAT YOU HAVE LYING AROUND! DOES IT HURT YOU? WELL, DEEP IN YOUR HEART, YOU KNOW THE ANSWER. BUT WILL IT BE AWESOME? HELL YEAH!
"Hmm... Torgue add-on sounds good." He states, then grins, "Why not? install it."
It took a couple of minutes to do so, but once done he confirmed launching the add-on and waited again.
Once it was done, the screen showed as thus: "Best experienced with a microphone and speaker"
Thomas looks around in confusion for a moment, before remembering something. He types into the console "emergency fix: speaker to microphone."
It loaded a few seconds, before thomas caught a slight headache and the knowledge to craft a speaker and microphone. He looks through his accumulated junk and grabs a pair of speakers, where one he turns into a homemade mic. Then he wires it up to the PDA.
He does a test, "Oi, testing. tell me if this is understandable." He says to the mic. To which he gets a robotic response back. "COULD BE BETTER. BUT IT IS UNDERSTANDABLE."
He nods, "Good. Boot up that Torgue add-on, please." He asks.
"BOOTING... DONE."
Then from the speaker he was greeted by another voice, "YOU! YES YOU! WHAT THE F* DO YOU WANT?! YOU NEED EXPLOSIONS?! BECAUSE THIS TRAIN HAS NONE!" The voice having been loud enough to cause Thomas to be knocked over.
"Could you not scream so loud!" Thomas complains, getting a "SORRY!" in response. He gets up and straightens his back, "Right. Here's the deal. I need this train to be rocketing forwards for a moment. Best thing to use is explosions. I need you to cannibalise enough parts off the train to make it work, whilst also keeping it functional." Thomas explains.
There is a moment of silence, before the voice bellows out again, "THAT. IS. AN AWESOME IDEA! EXPLOSION POWERED TRAIN! MY QUESTION IS: "WHY?" AND "WHY NOT?" PLEASE ANSWER THEM, SO I COULD SLEEP SOUNDLY!"
"Well, for one I plan on fighting off a bunch of bandits, so blasting in with a train is a cool way to do so." The moustachioed man says, putting up one finger, then another, "And two: There might be a rival engine on the tracks and I'm dead-set on ramming it."
"THAT IS ONE OF THE BEST EXCUSES FOR EXPLOSIONS I HAVE EVER HEARD! I WILL HELP NOW, LET'S MAKE IT F* AWESOME! SICK-GUITAR-SOLO-GO!" And the voice proceeds to do a "guitar solo" with their own sounds, earning a sigh from Thomas.
"Yes, yes. Now help me okay? I have no clue how much time I have, but the more time we save, the better." Thomas says, sounding slightly desperate.
"OKAY! HERE'S WHAT WE DO: FIRST WE WILL USE THE SIDE ARMOUR MOUNTED HERE FOR THE BODY OF THE BOOSTER. THEN WE WILL-"
Dew, the scralet-haired woman and the blue-haired boy are running along the rails, having finally spot the town in the distance.
The woman had a shotgun and the bear-faunus had a machine gun in hand.
"Why the hell are we even here?!" Dew yelled, "There ain't enough man-power for us to defend a whole town!" As he kept pace with the woman.
"Quit complaining and keep running! We got to reach Nova Ferra!" The scarlet yelled, but in her mind she was preoccupied by other thoughts... "I needed to get that moustache'd idiot to come as well. He could've been a fine addition to our ranks!"
"RIGHT, NOW YOU HAVE AN AWESOME EXPLOSION-POWERED BOOSTER MADE OUT OF SCRAP! THAT IS LIKE, THE COOLEST THING EVER! THE ONLY THING THAT COULD TOP IT IS ACTUALLY USING IT, WHILST AWESOME F* MUSIC PLAYED AT FULL VOLUME!"
"That-" Thomas was about to retort, but stopped when he started considering it, "Is not actually a bad idea." He looked over to the jury-rigged PDA system and asked, "Scan the train, would you?"
"ALREADY HAD IT DONE! THE LOCOMOTIVE'S HORN WAS MODIFIED BEFORE EVER GETTING HERE, IT'S GOT A LOUDA* F* GOD D* INCREDIBLE SPEAKER SYSTEM! JUST TELL ME WHAT SONG, AND IT WILL BROADCAST IT THROUGH THE SPEAKER SYSTEM!" The PDA yelled (is there anything else but yell?) to the moustached man.
"I've got an idea, sure! We will head down there soon!" Thomas states, racking his head for anything else to add onto the engine. Before remembering himself as well, "Gotta armour myself up as well. 'Cause the one I currently have is falling apart... And also my weaponry."
The trio made it to the besieged town, where the townsfolk were holding their ground against the bandits.
One of the townsfolk spotted them, the woman specifically, and yelled "LADS! IT'S THEIR LEADER! OPEN FIRE!"
Dew paused momentarily, turning around to look at the woman in surprise, but he got a face-full of buckshot at point-blank range, splattering it.
"Sorry, not sorry." She says casually, the picking up the boy and running towards the bandits. The boy protesting all the while, "N-No! Help me! She's taking me away!"
"Don't shoot!" One of the townsfolk said, "they grabbed a hostage-!" But was interrupted by more firing from their own side.
The leader dodged and weaved through the bullet fire, moving towards the bandits, who proceeded to cover for her.
"Oi, boss!" One of them say, "Why'dya come back on foot?"
"Because the truck was attacked." She replies coldly. She then bangs the shotgun onto the ground, getting most of the nearby bandits attention.
"Listen up!" She starts, "The scouting truck was attacked and destroyed by a new player in this land. Their name is Thomas and they have a rival engine to use. They will most certainly come here by rail, so I want the best fighters and operators on our engine, pronto!" She orders, as some of the folk began scurrying around towards their train.
She walks up to the train, taking a quick look over. The front locomotive being heavily armoured with thick plating to pierce through barricades. And a few different types of wagons at the back of it stands proud as well. One fitted with two experimental tanks, another one is a flatbed with two mortar systems on it.
Behind there is a heavily reinforced passenger car, a dining car, an ammo storage car, a car that is dedicated as her quarters, prison car and a heavy cannon all the way at the back.
She boards the front, looking over to the driver and stating, "Be vigilant. It can go badly still." then leaving towards her own car, where she keeps the boy prisoner.
Thomas, looking more armoured than before, as if he is a juggernaut made of scrap metal.
He looks over to the PDA and says, "Disable TORGUE addon." And waits a bit, feeling slightly anxious.
After waiting a short amount of time, "Play 'Steamlands Battle Remastered.' please."
He gets a beep in conformation, then hears the music play. It was broadcasted loudly by the custom speaker system.
Grabbing a crude flag he made, which is the British flag, he decided to might as well do it like so. Having patriotism for another country. He flipped the switch and the train turns on. Before long, it started moving forwards toward the town of Nova Ferra.
He climbed up onto the top of the engine, holding the flag in one hand and letting it wave, whilst he himself was in armour.
Finally, the music loaded and started playing from the speaker system. He grinned under his heavy armour, feeling adrenaline kicking in...
The townsfolk kept fighting, firing and blasting the opposition. Sadly, they were slowly losing the battle.
A man with a green cap and grey buttoned uniform runs up to a woman with orange hair, fox ears and tail with the same grey uniform, which dawned many medals.
"Ma'am. They are breaking thu our fortifications." He came to tell, "They are also far to well equipped. They have superiority over the rails. An armoured train." He states.
The woman nods, "I see. When will back up arrive?" She asks, a raised eyebrow.
"In 2 days. The brass back in Atlas stated that our issue wasn't of concern to them." The man reported, getting the woman to slam a nearby wall in anger, which scared him.
"Not enough- ARE YOU KIDDING ME?!" She yells out, "There isn't enough time to in the world to survive this!" She vents a bit of her frustration, then pinches her nose in frustration. She calms down. She looks at the man and states, "Then you will go out there and start fighting. It's a last stand and the best we could do is weaken them severely. Do you under-?" Her fox ears suddenly twitched.
She turns to look at the rail way, opposite of the bandits, and squints. The man starts questioning, "Uh... ma'am-?" But he was cut off by her shushing him.
She kept staring, until finally something popped out from behind the trees, accompanied by... music. Loud music.
It was a rusty train engine, barreling forwards, a figure stands at the top of it decked out in armour made of scrap. The figure held a pole with a flag on it.
Some seized fighting to look at the foreign commotion, but their eyes widen at the sight.
"I AM THE KING OF SCRAP METAL! FEAR ME AND MY IRON HORSE!" They heard the voice yell.
This caused even some of the bandits to stop and look, even some went as far as to panic from the newcomer.
The fox faunus watched with wide eyes as the engine went right past and straight towards the bandit train. A might crash of metal and iron resonated across the town, as the man on top stood in place.
The front of both engines are damaged, as the man takes out a pistol and begins firing at the incoming bandits.
Witnessing it unfold and with new vigor, the fox faunus yells out, "SUPPORT THAT ENGINE AS IF YOUR LIFE DEPENDED ON IT!" As she grabs hold of a rifle and runs in, followed by a few dozen of the town's guards.
Thomas begins firing at the bandits, since they had realized they needed to destroy his engine to succeed in the siege. He witnesses a few attempting to board from the front with different weaponry in their hands.
He jumps onto two of them, crushing them under his weight. He picks up a shoddy assault rifle and some magazines, quickly started using it to gun down the other bandits.
The wheels on both trains keep grinding against the rails, but somehow his engine is managing to push them back slowly.
He gets shot multiple times by other bandits, but shrugs it off with his heavy armour. He notices some of them having grenades and decides to use them, throwing them towards the other train and damaging it slightly.
He then notices a few soldier like people boarding his train, with one of them being a fox faunus who runs in and defends him from the side.
"Who are you?" The fox-faunus asks, shooting at a bandit who tried to jump onto the train with a live grenade, watching it explode from being shot.
"Thomas. Wanted man in Vale. You?" He states, grabbing hold of a bandit and shooting them with the assault rifle in point-blank range.
"This region's highest chief." She responds, her rifle runs out of ammo, "Cover me." and begins reloading.
Thomas quickly aims the assault rifle behind and fires, shooting at a few climbing bandits.
"Why's a wanted criminal helping out in defending this town?" The fox faunus asks, finishing her reload and gets back to firing, "You're on recent news due to that intense car chase."
"Well, I wanted to make amends. I was desperate, got stabbed in the back and had to escape." Thomas says simply, throwing a couple of grenades he picked up towards the opposing train.
Eventually, both trains were grinding wheels and the bandit train started pushing back. This caused Thomas to curse in frustration.
He looked over to the chief and asked, "Protect the engine." And quickly climbed back up onto the top of the train. He took a few steps back, and made a running leap onto the top of the other train.
He noticed hidden exhaust pipes in the armour of the train. He pulled out a custom grenade he made earlier and dropped it into the exhaust. Then quickly he jumped back onto his own locomotive, just as the grenade blew and caused black smoke to bellow out of the bandit train.
This gave the edge for his engine to keep pushing them back. He asked the fox faunus, "What's at the end of this line?"
"A junction. One leads towards another town, the other to the Deep Iron Mines." She states.
"Lever action?" "What?" "How do you switch tracks?" "... With a lever." She mumbles out and looks over to the guards, "What direction is the junction going?!" She yells out.
One of them responds, "Towards another town! I was near the junction with my group!"
She nods and then aims down her rifle, towards a lever on the ground. She fires and hits it, switching the tracks whilst also making the lever inoperable. She nods with satisfaction, "Switch is towards the mines now."
Thomas considers it good enough and states, "Fend them off whilst I keep the engine running." Getting a bewildered look from the chief. But he quickly ran to the locomotive's engine bay and began tinkering (Searching through the PDA) with it.
"Right." He mutters, holding the PDA, "Anything that could increase the engine power-? Yes, there is."
[OVERLOAD: Last Engine!]
"I don' give a damn if tha' engine 'splodes! Give 'er all and them sum'!"
The engine will give great amounts of power, but it becomes UNSTABLE!
"Okay then." Thomas mutters, then yells out of the engine bay, "FIGURED SOMETHING OUT!" Climbing out of the bay.
"Damn it." The chief mutters, continuing to fire her rifle.
Her ears perked when she heard Thomas yell, "Figured something out!"
"THERE'S A CATCH, ISN'T THERE?!" She yells back, not believing it to be easy.
"Aye! The engine will blow if I do this. So keep 'em off and keep 'er going!"
Before she could answer, she heard gunshots go off inside the engine bay. Her eyes widen, before jumping towards the engine bay and seeing Thomas with a smoking rifle barrel. The relatively small engine sputtering from the damage.
She stares in shock, before looking at Thomas with an angered expression, "WHY DID YOU SHOOT THE ENGINE?!" She shrieks into his ear, getting him to wince in pain.
He ignored her and said "PDA, play 'I Welcome the Darkness' from 'Deep Rock Galactic'." And waited for the music to start.
As soon as it did, he turned some of the valves and pipes, "I'm making us get out of here. And intense music helps me keep focus. Keeps adrenaline going." He responds.
She was about to continue yelling his ear off, when the engine made a deafening roar, similar to that of explosives.
Thomas started grinning, and looked at the PDA for statistics... Then that grin turned into a dread-filled frown when he saw the statistics.
UNSTABLE ENGINE
The engine is deteriorating at a slowly accelarating pace, but is producing more power relative to it!
Once the engine hits 0, it will explode!
"Shit! Back off, let me work!" He yells, going in with a few tools in hand and a pile of scrap.
"No, you explain why-!" The fox-faunus tried to intervene, but Thomas wasn't having any of it. "GET THE FUCK OUT ALREADY AND START SHOOTING THE CUNTS!" He yells, getting her to stop and simply leave the engine bay.
As the chief leaves the bay, a guardsman reported to her, "Ma'am! Our locomotive is accelerating!" She hears, which causes her eyes to widen. She watches as the locomotive is actually pushing the other train back.
The rival train crew become desperate at this, to go so far as to use their mortar cannon at such a close range. "Mortar! Shoot it down!" She yelled, aiming at the shell that is falling towards the locomotive.
She fires a shot and manages to destroy the shell mid-air, causing little harm to the pushing engine.
The whole mess gained more speed, to the point that the bandits were incapable of boarding the engine on foot.
The mine shaft slowly got into view. The bandits inside the train begin panicing, the sides of the armoured passanger wagon open up, revealing harpoons which were fired away from eachside, anchoring the whole thing in place.
"Shit! Steel wires! The engine doesn't have enough power to get thru!" A guard comments, firing at a group of bandits. The chief nods and goes to the engine bay, only to find Thomas still working and the engine itself glowing bright yellow. Flames even spew out of it from time to time. All the while Thomas' hands were moving like a blur to keep the engine stable.
She stares in awe, watching as the engine continues to work under such stress. It was as if a part of hell itself manifested in the engine, trying to break free.
The fox-faunus quickly snaps oit of it, and yells "The opposing train is using harpoons and steel to anchor itself!"
Thomas quickly replies without a beat, "Head to the locomotive's cabin. There's a jury-rigged lever system for the scrap booster at the back. It will give us the power needed to get by." He replies. As she was about to leave him alone, he quickly added "Oh, and make sure everyone holds on tight! It'll be a sudden blast!"
The fox-faunus quickly runs over to the locomotive's cabin, quickly laying her eyes at the control panel. The guards in the background are shooting back at incoming fire, which became more intense since the locomotive is forced to stop. The steel wheels of the engine skidding and grinding against the rails.
She spots the lever Thomas has mentioned, she was about to grab it, until she remembered to warn her troops "EVERYONE! HOLD TIGHT!" She yells.
She watches as they took hold of the railing, then she pulls the lever... *GLANK*!...
but it malfunctioned, so she pushed the lever back... *CLUNK* Then pulls *GLANK*...
*CLUNK* *GLANK* *CLUNK* *GLANK* "Come on!..." *CLUNK* *GLANK* "Work already!" *CLUNK* *GLANK* *CLUNK* *GLANK* "Damn it, work you stupid-!" *GLANK*
The music cuts off on the locomotive... Then a voice speaks from it, one of an explosive lover. "EXPLOSION NOISE! HERE." It screamed, then a loud explosion emerged from the scrapped together booster on the back, launching the locomotive forward and pushing the entire train far enough for the harpoon cable to snap.
The train entered the mines they were heading for, being pushed to an unstable rail bridge, which runs over a large deep hole.
The train slowed down, as the bandits onboard became truly frightened, panicking from potential bridge collapse.
The first wagon runs over the weak bridge, said weight of the wagon caused the worn supports to fail, snapping and braking, the wagon pulling the rest of the train down.
It fell, fell and fell, then finally hitting the floor with ungodly amount of noise. Then silence... Both parties, shocked of this development. One from managing to succeed against all odds, another from losing their trump card and leader.
Then came the celebration. The bandits fleeing the town and the guards having gunned most of them down with their rifles.
The fox-faunus celebrated as well, along with her troops. The success of this defense will surely spread across the county.
But whilst they were celebrating, they had forgotten something and someone...
Thomas' voice pierces through the celebration, "LISTEN UP EVERYONE! EVACUTE THE DAMN ENGINE, SHE'S ABOUT TO BLOW!"
Most had their eyes widen, before running off, away from the locomotive. The fox-faunus decided to stay, jogging back to the engine bay.
What greeted her was Thomas panicking whilst fixing the engine. The motor having small explosions occur, loosening or shooting out bolts, pieces of metal, or even straight up melting. The floor is scorched, broken tools lay about, fire spreads across the walls, exhaust fumes wafting up to the ceiling, and even pieces of the floor itself had holes in it.
The chief, on instinct, grabbed Thomas and used him and his armour as shield, enforcing his armour with Aura.
And just as suddenly she did tha-.
An explosion occurred, one that sent parts of the locomotive flying high into the sky, including two figures.
The guards look on with horror, as chunks of hot metal fall back down onto the ground. Few took cover from the scrap rain, others still stared, not daring to move a single muscle.
The two figures eventually fall back down to the ground, one bruised, the other unconscious. They landed on top of each other. Thomas having fallen onto the fox-faunus and having been knocked out from the explosion. The chief was under him, awake but bruised and exhausted.
A guardsman ran up to the duo, worried. "Chief, you okay?" he asked, "Why did you go and save this one man?"
The chief lets out a grunt, pushing Thomas' unconscious body off her, then getting up and answers his question, "Because if it weren't for that man, we would've died during the bandit raid." She states, then lets out a sigh, "And let the cityfolk know that we managed to fend off the bandits by external help."
"Yes ma'am." The guardsman replies, "But I must ask, why would you want to mention this man? It could cause distress amongst Atlas and Vale."
It was at this point when the chief smiles, "Good. That just means that maybe they will up the defenses in town, instead of ignoring us only when tax is due."
She then looked over to Thomas, who was still knocked out. He was being lifted up by the locals and the town doctor, a balding man with graying hair, a brown coat with a green cross. She asks the doctor, "will he be okay?" to which the doctor responds back with his strangely gravely voice, "A'e, 'e 'll beh bak. A 'ew b'ok'n wibs n' a 'ust'd leg. P'ssib'y c'ncussssed, bu' 'e'll live thru it."
The fox faunus lets out a sigh of relief, before looking over to the guardsmen, "Once this man and our folk recover enough to get up, we will celebrate our victory!" She states, getting some hurrahs in return.
The doctor, along with a few other townsfolk, bring Thomas over to a field hospital that was quickly set up after the fighting, where he will be treated for an unknown amount of time...
It seems I have found this man's personal journal. It appears he wrote every day about his thoughts...
I will take it upon myself to write the very things that happened in this town.
You, Thomas, had helped the people of Nova Ferra fight off it's biggest bandit raid ever to face, having destroyed their battle train and almost sacrificing yourself for us.
Your locomotive you came into battle with is beyond repair, but we might have something for you, one you awaken. And let's just say, I would like to become a part of your crew, Thomas. You may have had a dark past, but you are attempting to fix it and I respect that. I deem it necessary to join you and help.
I will retire from my position as the High Guard Chief of Green County, and come along with you.

A/N: Right. This chapter is almost 5k words, and there is now 7 chapters, I do believe...
So, I wanted to ask something, now that I've written quite a bit here... Could some of you review it? I wish to know some of your thoughts, in all it's honesty. Because I enjoy reading reviews, either positive or negative, I still enjoy reading them. And answering back is something I like doing.
But I must be asking too much. In the end, I wish for you fine folks to enjoy this fic, which was made by a person who had never watched RWBY before, I merely read a lot of fan fiction. (Also, could you really blame me when the setting is just so good that I just wanted to write?)
Anywho, this has been ddomster19 / harks, writing down ideas that instantly pop up in my mind. See you folks later!
