Kittens and Boxes
Soulful yellow eyes looked up at her from the box. A soft mew was let out as she reached out to stroke its black fur. So soft!
How could anyone abandon something so adorable?
She picked up the run-down cardboard box that the kitten has been left in, her heart swelling up. She needed to give it some water and she was sure she that they had some extra fish at home that she could feed it.
"Shiki, you're not thinking about taking that stray home with you, right?"
The voice pulled her out of her thoughts and she turned her head from her squatting position and realised it was Neku.
"Hey. Don't tell me that you forgot I was here," he said with a slight tinge of annoyance.
Uh, well she had forgotten.
Neku crossed his arms, taking her silence as her answer. "Of course. More importantly, your parents aren't going to let you bring it home."
He just had to remind me."Aww but look at it! It's so small and defenceless and it probably needs to be looked after. And it looks like Mr. Mew!"
"In what way? I'm pretty sure that thing in the box is a cat, not a pig."
"That joke is really getting old," she huffed, getting up to her feet, still holding the box.
The kitten emitted another heart-wrenching mew.
"Whatever. The point is, you can't take that home with you." Shiki should have never complained to Neku about how frustrating it's was that her parents didn't let her keep pets; if she hadn't, she could have taken the kitten secretly back, no problem.
"If I leave Nimew here alone, it'll starve!" she argued adamantly.
"You've already given it name - argh, you're not going to give up on this, are you?"
"Not a chance, " Shiki said; Neku should have known by now how stubborn she could be.
Uncrossing his arms, he pulled the box away from Shiki.
"Hey!" she protested, tugging at his arms.
"I'll take it home."
The suddenness of the statement made Shiki release her friend. "Seriously?"
"Yeah. My building allows pets and my parents wouldn't mind." He gave Shiki a stern look. "I'll only keep it temporarily. You're going to have to pick it up and find an animal shelter for it."
That...was an amazing idea. "Thank you, Neku."
A smile burst out on her face as she regarded the small kitten, who was looking out of the box at the two of them.
"Let's go to my place now, then," he suggested, turning and starting to walk.
"Sure thing!" she said, trotting along by his side. "Gosh, it is just so precious."
"You're really obsessed with cats."
"Like you aren't!"
"Hey, there's a difference between Cat and cats."
"And that difference is that my type of cat is cuter!"
"Yeah, yeah. I'm starting to regret this, now."
"Don't change your mind!"
"I was kidding."
"Good. Still, I really hope your parents won't get mad."
"I told you, they'll be fine with it. And...do want to stay over for dinner?"
"Sure! You're going to have to race me there!"
"Wha-? Wait up! I'm still carrying this damn box!"
A/N: Tadaa! I don't know where I got this idea from, but I liked how this turned out. Phew...only two more days until the winter break for me *O*

Also, if you guys know where Nimew is from, then you are not only a regular at the Stitched Graffiti cafe but a loyal customer of the Amulet Misty chain, which I am very grateful for. [I'm enjoying this analogy way too much now xD].
Thanks for reading!
