Sweet Kalos Chapter 3

The group of friends arrived at Santalune City by sun fall. Luckily the Pokemon center there had hotel rooms for traveling trainers or the trainers of Pokemon who needed to stay over the night. Each room had two beds. Serena and Shauna shared one room while Tierno and Trevor shared another. Calem lucked out and got his room.

"Ah maybe this traveling life won't be so bad," Calem said to himself while settling down, "I better prepare for my gym battle tomorrow". Calem had bought potions from the pokemart inside the Pokemon center. "Serena said the gym leader here was a bug type user, so I guess I'll use Farfetch'd since he's a flying type for most of the battle," he thought to himself, "Ah, I'll figure it out tomorrow, I need to sleep".

The next day….

Calem got up early since today was the day he was going to challenge his first gym. Santalune City was much bigger than Vaniville Town. Santalune had several rows of neighborhoods and suburbs. There was also a Pokemon school for new or upcoming trainers along with a couple of cafes. The Pokemon center sat near route 3. The Santalune gym was found on the outskirts of the city which seemed to love landscaping as the grassy areas were covered by flowers and colorful shrubs. One of the most unique features of the city was the fountain right in the heart of the city, on top of the fountain was a statue of a Roselia. A Pokémon that Calem had seen in Sinnoh. Water came out of its petals that filled the fountain. He thought it was a charming city. After getting ready for the day he decided to have breakfast with his Pokemon at a cafe in Santalune City. As he was eating at a table his Pokémon were eating Poké puffs, a delicious treat in Kalos. Serena walked into the cafe, looking tired. She immediately spotted him and approached his table.

"Hey Serena, I didn't think I would see you here," greeted Calem.

"Oh hey Calem, mind if I sit with you?" asked Serena with a smile. Calem was caught off guard by the question.

"Uh s-sure, do you want to order something?" stuttered Calem.

"Yeah, I'll pay for it," said Serena, who still had a warm smile. Calem hesitantly waved down the waitress.

"Is everything okay over here?" she asked.

"I would like to place an order," said Serena.

"Sure hun, what can I get for you?" the waitress asked while holding her notepad and pen.

Serena smiled and said, "I'll have the Kalosian Chansey Omelet with the Cafe Moomoo lait".

The waitress hastily wrote it down before saying, "I'll get that right out for you".

"So Serena, are you going to challenge the gym?" asked Calem, who was attempting to make small talk. Serena's warm smile turned into a slight frown and she looked away for a moment as if something was troubling her.

"I'm not feeling like it today, and I would like to train Fennekin and Fletchling a little more," she hesitated, "maybe I'll challenge the next one."

"Oh alright then, I'm going to challenge today," said Calem with a smile.

Serena's warm smile returned as she said, "Good luck with that, I'm sure your Chespin and Farfetch'd will both battle hard."

"Ah thanks," said Calem.

The waitress came back with a plate and a coffee mug, "Here is your Chansey Omelet and your Moomoo lait".

"Thank you," said Serena in a pleased tone.

The waitress nodded and asked, "Would you guys like anything else?"

"No thanks, that will be all for me," said Calem.

"Me too," responded Serena. The waitress nodded and left. "So Calem, what is Sinnoh really like?" asked Serena while taking a bite of her food.

"Well, it's mountainous and it's snowy in the winter," said Calem.

"It can get pretty chilly here too in the winter but it gets frigid in Eastern Kalos," mentioned Serena.

"What kind of a region is Kalos?" asked Calem.

"Well Western Kalos and Lumiose city are huge tourist spots," she explained, "The whole region is really lovely, you'll love it here." The two rivals finished eating and kept talking about their home regions.

"Good luck on your gym battle," Serena cheered.

"Thanks, I'll try," said Calem with a laugh.

"I'll see you in a while," she said while smiling.

"Bye," said Calem. He could barely get the word out. He had just started his Pokemon journey yet he was already starstruck.

"What a cute couple," thought the waitress.

Calem confidently walked towards the Santalune City gym. He would be lying if he said his feet weren't tired from walking. He noticed a girl wearing a yellow helmet, white tank top, yellow shorts, and rollerblades. She also had her hair in pigtails. She looked a little older than Calem. She was leaning against the gym and that's when she spotted Calem. "HEY KID", she said enthusiastically. Calem flinched and directed his attention to her. The roller skater rolled to him. "You look like you've been walking a while", she said. "How can you tell", said Calem in a confused tone. "A lot of people go through this city to get to Lumiose". "After a while, you figure out who's rested and who's not", the roller skater said. "Well in that case I walked here on foot", he said. "Well I'm willing to give you a pair of rollerblades for a price.", she said. Calem thought about it for a second. "Alright what do you want?", he asked. "A thousand poke dollars and a battle".

"Deal", said Calem who had more than enough money to spare. "I need to be careful with my Pokemon though, I'm about to challenge the gym", he thought to himself. "My name's Rosalie by the way".

"I'm Calem, nice to meet you". "Nice to meet you too Calem".

"Shall we get this battle started?", asked Rosalie. "Let's do it", said a confident Calem. Calem grabbed a Pokeball off of his belt hastily, ready for action. Rosalie grabbed a Pokeball from her pocket. "Let's do this Chespin", said Calem in a determined tone while throwing the Pokeball. "Another chance to win Ziggy", said Rosalie while releasing her Pokemon. "A Zigzagoon, I've seen them in Sinnoh", thought Calem.

"I don't want to depend on my Pokedex for this battle". "Chespin let's start the battle with rollout", commanded Calem. Chespin got on the ground and rolled as fast as he could towards Zigzagoon while picking up the dust around him. "Ziggy tries to dodge!", shouted Rosalie. Before Ziggy could react, Chespin slammed into him.

Ziggy winced in pain. "Ziggy use sand attack", commanded Rosalie. Ziggy turned around and kicked up the dust at Chespin. The dust made contact with Chespin's eyes. "Pin pin", Chespin whined in distress as he was rubbing his eyes. "Ziggy now use tackle", said Rosalie in a confident tone. Ziggy rammed himself right into Chespins chest. Chespin fell back flat on his back. "Uh Chespin can you get it", said a concerned Calem. Chespin got up, ready for more.

Calem regained his focus before saying "Chespin try to use vine whip". Vines came out of Chespin's back and they were whipped violently at Ziggy. "Ziggy watch out", yelled Rosalie. Ziggy was hit head-on by the vine whips and tumbled back. "Now finish him off with tackle", commanded Calem. Before the small Pokemon could get up he was rammed by Chespin.

Ziggy laid on the ground, unable to battle. "Ziggy no", said Rosalie in a concerned tone. She returned Rosalie to his Pokeball. "Thank you for battling hard", she said to the Pokeball before putting it back in her pocket. "That was a good battle", she said. "Thanks, Chespin and I battled hard". Calem reached into his bag and grabbed a thousand poke dollars. "Here's your money for the roller skates", said Calem. Rosalie smiled before saying "Keep it as thanks for the battle".

"Wow, thanks", Calem said cheerfully. Rosalie handed him a pair of clip-on roller skates. "All you have to do is clip it to your shoes and go, it's that easy '', she said. "It takes some getting used to at first but once you get it down its easy". "Thanks", said Calem with a smile. "You're going to challenge the gym aren't you?", she

asked. "Yeah, I'm gonna try", he said nervously. "Don't be nervous, you're Pokemon are pretty strong", she said. "Good luck".

"Thanks again, I'll see ya around", said Calem.

And with that Calem entered the gym, expecting anything possible. He had healed up Chespin so he was ready to go.

Inside the gym stood 2 statues. Both statues had the gym logo on them. Many photos of Pokemon and flowers were on the walls as if the gym leader was a fan of photography. There was also a pole that led to a room below. Standing next to one of the statues was a man. He looked to be a foot taller than Calem. He had a potbelly and had brown hair along with a bit of gray on the sides. He wore a white buttoned shirt with red suspenders, a red bowtie, a belt, and jeans.

"Well hello there little Wartortle", he said in a cheerful voice. "Uh hello, I would like to challenge the gym leader", Calem said. "Straight to the point I see", said the man. "Well, I'm the referee in charge so all you have to do challenge Gym Leader Viola is have at least 2 Pokemon with you".

"Ah I have two", said Calem with excitement as he pulled out two pokeballs. "Very good, now all you have to do is slide down this pole and Gym Leader Viola will accept your challenge", the referee said while pointing to the pole. "Good luck to you", he added "Thanks", Calem responded. Calem grabbed onto the pole tight and slid down. He landed on a big wet spiderweb.

"What the hell is this", he said to himself as he tried to get up from the sticky web. "Welcome young trainer to the Santalune gym", said a female voice. Calem was caught off guard and quickly got to his feet, trying to keep his balance on the sticky web. On the other side of the web on a wooden platform stood a woman. She looked to be an early adult. She had blond hair that came down to her shoulders. She wore a white tank top, baggy green pants, a green bracelet, she was also holding a camera as well. "Who are you?", asked Calem as he was trying to analyze the situation. "Who am I?", said the woman sounding insulted.

"Well I'm Gym Leader Viola and this is my gym", she said proudly. "Your the gym leader!?", said Calem shocked. "Why so surprised?", she asked still sounding insulted. "Ah no reason", Calem said. "Not what I was expecting, she's shorter and younger than I expected", he thought. "Hmph, if you're not going to battle then stop wasting my time", Viola said.

"Alright then let's battle", he said. "Well then, stand up on that wooden platform behind you". "What's your name kid?", she asked. "Calem Xavier". "Hm, you don't happen to be a relative of Grace Xavier, Rhyhorn racer". "Indeed I am, I'm her son", said Calem proudly." Is this your first gym battle?", she asked. "It is", said Calem nervously. "Well then Calem Xavier, may the best trainer win". Calem slowly made his way to the platform across from Viola and when he did the referee slid down. He quickly made his way to a third platform. "Allow me to explain the rules", the referee said. "Both trainers will use two Pokemon, the first trainer with both Pokemon unable to battle is declared the loser and the trainer with at least one Pokemon able to battle is declared the victor". "Do you understand the rules kid?", he asked. "Sounds simple enough", Calem responded. "Very well then, have a clean battle". "Damn, I've never seen a battlefield like this before", he thought. "This battle is going to be hard enough". "The gym leader will send out her first Pokemon", said the referee. "You know the routine Surskit, let's battle hard", Viola said confidently. The Pokemon that Viola released was small. It had a blue body in the shape of a ball. Orange cheeks were similar to Pikachu's red cheeks. Surskit also had yellow on top of its head along with a yellow antenna. "Now the challenger will send out his Pokemon". Calem grabbed a Pokeball off of his belt. His heart was pumping adrenaline at this point. He looked down at the Pokeball, then back up at Viola. A small voice inside him was telling him to turn back but he shrugged it off. "Let's not disappoint Chespin!", he shouted with a passion as he threw the Pokeball. He barely got the words out. All he knew now was that regardless of the result of the battle, there was no turning back. "Pin pin", Chespin chirped determinedly. "What kind of Pokemon is Surskit", thought Calem as he pulled out his Pokedex. "Surskit, the Pond Skater Pokemon, Surskit is a bug/water type Pokemon". "Alright then Chespin may be at a disadvantage but we can still win this with Farfetch'd." "Are both trainers ready?", asked the referee.

"Yes", said Viola confidently. "As ready as I'll ever be", said Calem nervously. "Then let the battle begin", shouted the referee. "Surskit use quick attack!", commanded Viola. Surskit swiftly moved towards Chespin.

Just like its name the attack was quick. Chespin was struck by Surskit and fell onto the sticky web.

"Uh, Chespin try to get out", shouted Calem. "Ch-ches", Chespin chirped while struggling. "Use quick attack again", she said. Once again Surskit moved swiftly and struck the helpless Chespin. The attack jolted Chespin lose from the web.

"Chespin are you okay?", said Calem with concern.

Chespin nodded. Ready to attack. "Chespin use rollout", shouted Calem. Chespin rolled up into a ball and lunged himself at Surskit. Before Surskit could get out of the way he found himself hit head-on by Chespin. Surskit whimpered. "Surskit retaliate with bubble", commanded Viola. Like Shauna's Froakie, Surskit released a series of bubbles that struck Chespin.

Chespin whimpered but was still on his feet. "Uh, use rollout again", said Calem who was under pressure. Once again Chespin rolled into a ball and lunged. This time though Surskit was ready and swiftly dodged. "Now use quick attack again", she said. Chespin was caught off guard and was struck by Surskit. Chespin fell to the ground. "Chespin is unable to battle!", said the referee. Calem returned Chespin to his Pokeball, already feeling discouraged. "Sorry Chespin, you battled hard, I'll make sure to win this one for you".

He grabbed his second Pokeball off his belt. "Well Farfetch'd, we can still win", Calem said to the Pokeball. "Let's pull off the comeback", he yelled while throwing the Pokeball. "Kwaa", Farfetch'd quaked. Farfetch'd had no problem gripping onto the web. "Were not out of this yet", said Calem in a determined tone. "Use fury attack", commanded Calem. Farfetch'd lunged towards Surskit and rammed into him several times causing critical hits to Surskit.

Surskit winced and was dazed. "Uh, Surskit try to use quick attack again", said Viola hesitantly. Surskit was too dazed to move. Farfetch'd didn't even have to dodge. "Return the favor with peck", commanded Calem. Farfetch'd digged his beak into Surskit's side. Surskit fell over. "Surskit is unable to battle, Gym Leader Viola send out your next Pokemon", said the referee. Viola returned Surskit to his Pokeball. "You did well Surskit, get some rest".

"I must say, you're not doing too bad for someone in their first gym battle", she said. "Thanks, Farfetch'd and I are just getting started", said Calem confidently.

"Let's see how it goes", she said as she grabbed another Pokeball out of her bag. "Let's finish this Vivillion", she shouted while throwing the Pokeball. A butterfly Pokemon came out of the Pokeball. It looked similar to Butterfree, but this Pokemon was a Pokemon Calem had never seen before.

The patterns on its wings were mostly pink, black on the edge, with blue and white markings. "Luckily I have a trump card up my sleeve", she said. Before Calem could bring out his Pokedex Viola shouted, "Vivillion use infestation". Vivillon launched small bugs at Farfetch'd. "Farfetch'd dodge", said Calem in a concerned tone. Farfetch'd was able to dodge most of the bugs but a few latched on to Farfetch'd. Farfetch'd felt the discomfort of bugs chewing on his skin.

"Uh, Farfetch'd use fury attack", Calem called out. Farfetch'd had to jump off the ground and try to fly towards Vivillon. It was a struggle for the duck Pokemon whose leek weighed him down. Vivillon quickly flew away from Farfetch'd. "Wait I know what to do", thought Calem. "Vivillon use poison power", commanded Viola. "Farfetch'd use sand attack", shouted Calem. Farfetch'd looked back at Calem with a confused looked as there was no sand. Viola seemed baffled. Vivillon was closing in on Farfetch'd. "Just kick at the web!", shouted Calem. Farfetch'd turned around and kicked at the web towards Vivillon.

Part of the web came apart and was flung at Vivillion. Before Vivillon could react she found herself covered in part of the web. Vivillion struggled in the air, trying to free her wings. Viola was shocked and speechless at the same time.

"Farfetch'd use fury attack", shouted Calem. Farfetch'd flew up and struck Vivillon in mid-air. Vivillon was knocked out of the air and fell on the now flimsy web. Viola regained her senses and called out "Vivillon use struggle bug!". Vivillon tried to struggle but the web was too strong to break out of.

"Now use peck Farfetch'd", commanded Calem.

Farfetch'd dug his beak into Vivillion's wing. Vivillon kept squirming to no avail. "Now use fury attack again", said Calem. Farfetch'd kept ramming the helpless Vivillon until she stopped squirming. "Vivillon is unable to battle, which means the challenger is the winner", said the referee enthusiastically.

Calem couldn't help but smile victoriously. Viola clapped for him. They both met back in the lobby. "Congratulations", she said. "I've never seen anyone use my battlefield against me".

Ah, that was just a lucky strategy I came up with last-second", said Calem with a laugh. "Well it worked", she said.

"Thanks for a great battle", Viola said while handing a bronze badge shaped like a beetle with emerald eyes.

"Thanks, the experience definitely helps so I can become a better trainer", he said. "Well just keep doing what you're doing and you'll be there in no time, I hope you reach your goal" "Just in case you need some help here is a copy of TM83 Infestation, my favorite move in case you hadn't noticed.", Viola said.

"Thank you, I've never used a TM before", said Calem. "Ah it's easy, you just control it through the Pokedex, the best part about them is that you can use it as many times as you want", Viola explained. "Alright then, thanks again", Calem said happily. "Where do you plan to go next for your next gym battle?", Viola asked.

"I'm not quite sure, wheres's the next gym?", Calem asked. "The nearest one is in Lumiose City, but I've heard they just started having power issues and their gym might be down, the nearest one to that is in Cyllage city", she explained.

"I'll check it out, thanks". "That's where mom is going to race", thought Calem. "I wish you the best", said Viola. "Same to you", said Calem kindly. "Come back anytime if you get the urge for a rematch", Viola said as Calem was exiting the gym. "Interesting", Viola said while pulling a device. She clicked a contact and the device started ringing until a hologram of a man appeared above the device.

"This is Grant", said the man.

"Hey Grant, long time no see", Viola greeted. "There's this kid I just battled, somethings... different about him from past trainers I've battled, keep an eye out for him, he might be on his way to your gym next", she explained.

Calem walked back through the city, looking for whatever adventure awaited him.

Surprise surprise Calem gets his first badge (First of many hopefully) the battle wasn't always easy but he got the win. Hopefully, this chapter keeps asking you questions. What will happen in Lumiose? Will Serena ever attempt a gym battle and what is she going through? What else awaits? Haha, quite a few that will make you go "hmm", but as always thanks for reading!
