The next morning was a nightmare to behold, after the raging night brought more of the Storm Wraith upon the expedition. All six Jaegers had been forced to defend until the Maser implacements and Railguns could be fully installed, finally driving the flying monstrosities away. The fresh snow outside the cave mouth was stained black with the blood of the Storm Wraith's, leaving an oozing mess that would've made Picasso regurgitate. The smell was beyond horrendous, many of the people wanting to leave the cave ASAP.
Of course, they had to wait until the new shipment came through. It wasn't long before mini-breach gates appeared within the cave, allowing equipment and other necessities to be pushed through. Harry had made sure everything was marked, logged and then loaded up into the Juggernauts before they got warmed up and headed off towards the Elder Thing City. He was sipping some tea when he saw the new soldier uniforms being passed out, or well, armor.
The new outfits looked like a cross between the Halo Mjolnir Spartan armor and the Star Wars Snowtrooper armor, while looking similar to Jaeger armor in places. The PPDC and PLF had been working on these extreme armor suits during the Kaiju War in case the Kaiju became human sized. The weapons had also been changed a fair bit, due to the advances in technology. Firearms now had two modes to work with; energy and projectile. The projectile mode was your standard firearm but it now fired a lot faster and harder, like a miniature railgun.
Energy mode turned the firearm into an energy weapon, the magazine holding two miniaturized HEE generators that would allow the weapon to never run out of ammunition. It also warmed the weapon so it didn't freeze, which also warmed the soldier's hands while in the frigid cold temperatures. Of course, those that were snipers had a more plasma based railgun weapon that would, hopefully, take out targets as large as a tank. Even getting some damage in on larger enemies as well, that was the hope anyway.
Once the resupply was finished, the mini-breach gates closed and everything was loaded up into the Juggernauts. Engines were warmed up and allowed to run, giving the massive machines time to get everything in the green before they rolled out of the cave and into the hellscape once more. That had been several hours previously and Harry was going over some of the radar data in his office, deep in concentration as he looked at the results. Something had been showing up on the radar for the past hour now but the blip wasn't showing in full, it was so far away.
He then was notified of the latest ping of the radar when he pulled up the radio, "Drivers, head to the blip that is off to the left about thirty miles. It's heading in the direction of Lakes camp better then the path we are taking."
"Understood sir," The driver on the radio returned, "changing course."
Within the hour, they had arrived at a partial dome that was built into the side of a smaller range of mountainous hills. The wind buffeted against the range but was calmer on the other side, as the Juggernauts parked themself around the entrance of the dome. The bottoms of the Juggernauts lowered and unloaded troopers in their new armor and armed with the newest weapons, quickly securing a perimeter before getting the dome open. It slid open like a shatterdome before stopping, showing a cavernous space that was full of buildings that were human in nature.
The soldiers were quick to secure as much as they could before signalling the scientists that it was clear. Harry came down with the first science group, having told Luna to stay put. Luna was already suffering from sleepless nights from her Cosmic Sight flaring up during her sleep, so Scylla was going to get Luna down for a long nap. Harry entered the dome as Striker Eureka came in after them, followed by Diablo Lightning. The space was vast, going back by at least a few miles, dug into the hill itself.
He found a squad that were his escort, as he held up a device that would detect computer equipment. It pinged, weak but giving them a general direction. They moved forward, the dark buildings slowly glowing as age old lamps flickered to life. The buildings soon took on a sinister quality as they travelled down a main street, spotting overturned vehicles made for traversing the snowy landscape. The buildings were dark grey and only a few looked frosted over, like someone had let the outside come in and touch its cold touch upon the structures.
Harry felt like something was watching them, something not human. The feral feeling kept pressing down on his psyche until they reached the place in question, a dome topped building that was also the least exposed to any of the weathering effects that had been seen on the buildings around them. The squad got the door open, having found it unlocked, the lock itself was busted and warped into scrap. Entering the building, Harry took in his surroundings as the squad secured the place.
It was lined with equipment, tons of computers and other electronic devices lined the walls. He noticed many of them were not in working condition, broken and slashed by something that wasn't human. Very few monitors were intact, which he pointed out to one of the soldiers.
"Get one of these computers on and start downloading everything we can off the system."
"Yes, sir," The soldier said, quickly heading to one of the surviving computers and booting it up.
Harry frowned before hissing, feeling the feral presence start to move, as he radioed, "All squads, we're under attack!"
The perimeter that had been set up had just gotten word of the incoming threat when the first boogy barreled into the concrete wall at full speed. The concrete barrier cracked before exploding, as the soldiers quickly fired into the concrete smoke as a massive form roared before collapsing. They didn't get to see more as another monster reared its head, or onto its hind legs.
A massive Polar Bear snarled as it reared onto its hind legs before its arms split open like a praying mantis, snatching a soldier from his place and beginning to crush him. Energy fire and bullets tore into the freak of nature as its teeth elongated, its throat opening as a horde of flesh colored tendrils writhed out of its mouth and open throat. The soldier was dropped as both of its forelimbs were blasted off by energy fire, a few people dragging the bleeding man back into the barrier.
More of these nightmare abominations charged at the barrier, most of them were the mantis polar bears. There were others though, half frozen human bodies that had black tentacles flailing out of their necks, orifices or other wounded areas on their bodies. Then the larger monsters came, spherical horrors that had crimson tentacles dragged across the ground as multiple elongated, emancipated limbs pushed the abomination forward as the grotesque mouths slathered and howled.
Striker Eureka and Diablo Lightning jumped in, rushing the larger beasts. Crushing the smaller monsters underfoot as they assaulted the new threat.
Striker Eureka slammed a fist into one of the spherical horrors, sending it into a building as it died. Diablo unloaded it's Holy Destruction cannon into several more as Herc and Chuck brought the Mark Five Jaeger around, activating their plasma edge blades as they slashed a pair of the monsters in half.
"Stupid little blighters, aren't they?" Chuck commented as they stabbed another that had leapt at them from atop a building.
Herc grunted, "They are acting too coordinated to be natural, but too animalistic to have any proper plan of attack besides attack."
Chuck grunted as they were shoved back by one of the sphere's of flesh, slamming their blades into the streets to keep them from going back any further. Striker got up and punched the horror away, twin wounds from the blades inflicted upon the beast. As they got up, Herc radioed Diablo.
"See if you can get to where Mr. Potter is," He ordered, as he and Chuck grabbed and smashed a horror into the pavement, "we need to clear out of this place now before we're overwhelmed."
"Understood," Rias said over the radio, "we're heading over there now."
