Despite Jean insisting she was fine Narumi kept a close eye on her for the next twenty-four hours, watching for any signs of an infection. When she made it through the night without any issues he felt confident she would be fine.
Deciding to give her full use of the bed Narumi made his own bed beside her with a few cushions and blankets, settling down for the night. Sunlight breaking through the window woke Narumi and as he yawned he cracked open his eyes. The moment he noticed that the bed beside him was empty he blinked, fully awake as he stumbled to his feet. Once he stepped through the open bedroom door he heard loud coughing which seemed to be coming from the bathroom and as he approached the door he heard a low groan.
"Ugh….why do I feel so crappy?" I moaned, my head buried in the toilet bowl as light footsteps headed towards my spot on the floor. When I felt a hand touch my covered back I winced, feeling another wave of nausea but nothing came up this time leaving my stomach in knots. "Narumi? Is that you?" I mumbled, blinking up at him when he leaned over me.
"Yeah, it is. What happened?" He asked, noting the thin sheen of sweat beading my forehead and I coughed, wiping at my mouth with the back of my hand.
"I woke up feeling like I wanted to vomit. I barely made it here." I answered, wincing as he gently touched my forehead. "Sorry if I woke you," I added and he sighed, kissing my forehead before he helped me stand. I could barely put one foot in front of the other as Narumi braced me against the bathtub, touching my forehead before he walked over to the shower.
He returned with a washcloth and as I stared at him he rinsed it under the sink. As soon as he started to clean my face I sighed, closing my eyes for long enough to worry the detective who stared at me until I let out a breath.
"Just feeling a little woozy," I told him and he nodded, lightly kissing my cheek before he climbed to his feet eyeing me as I wiped at my eyes. "Not sure why."
"You did get hurt from that last fight with Haruki. Plus those painkillers have worn off so that's why you feel the way you do." Narumi replied and I nodded, weakly coughing as he helped me stand where I swayed. "Come on, let's get you back to bed. A nap will help." He suggested, wrapping his arm around my shoulders and as I stumbled towards the bathroom door I couldn't help thinking how lucky I was to have a boyfriend like Narumi.
I barely moved from my spot on Narumi's bed, only waking for long enough to take some aspirin and drink water that Narumi offered me before I dozed off. I woke when I heard footsteps and Narumi smiled at me as I sat, rubbing my eyes. "Morning, Jean. How are you feeling?" He asked, kneeling beside me and I managed a weak smile scratching at my forehead.
"Still a little woozy but I don't feel sick anymore," I answered, pushing myself up though when I took a few shaky steps Narumi quickly climbed to his feet grasping my shoulder in order to keep me steady. "I'm only going to the bathroom." I protested and Narumi raised an eyebrow at me until I finally sighed. "Alright, but can you wait outside?"
Once we reached the bathroom I stumbled over to the toilet as Narumi waited just outside in the hallway. After I relieved myself I wandered over to the sink only to stumble and when Narumi heard a dull thud he rushed inside, finding me kneeling on the floor panting. "What happened?" He asked me, kneeling and after I wrapped my arm around his neck he helped me up off the floor.
"I tried to walk to the sink and I didn't make it," I replied, my eyes filling with tears and he sighed as I rested my head under his chin. Holding me close Narumi stroked my hair as I sniffed, my shoulders shaking. I finally managed to calm down as Narumi carefully set me down on the edge of the bathtub his eyes searching my face as I wiped at my watery eyes.
"It's okay to ask for help, Jean," Narumi assured me as I lowered my head. "I want to help you, especially after everything you've been through since you came back." He added, blinking when I pushed my head under his chin.
"You're so good to me, Narumi," I told him, nuzzling his chin before I pulled my head back enough to see him staring at me. "I want to make it up to you."
"Jean, I understand that but how about we hold off until you're fully healed? I love you and everything but I don't want to push you into anything especially while you're still healing." Narumi answered when I draped both arms around his neck. A kiss pressed to the tip of my nose had me blushing at how close we were before he carried me back to the bedroom setting me down on the bed.
He left briefly returning with a glass of water and as I sipped at it he tousled my hair. "Now if you're feeling up to it how would you like something to eat?" He suggested, fixing me with a faint smile when I grimaced. "Don't worry, Jean. You need to get your strength back so how about some toast?" He offered and I nodded after a pause, hoping that I could stomach it.
When Narumi returned with a jug of water and a plate on a tray I brightened, making myself comfortable on the bed as Narumi knelt. "I thought just toast wouldn't be enough so I made rice as well," Narumi commented, enjoying the smile that crossed my lips as he set the tray down in front of me. "Here, let me fill your glass." He offered, doing just that as I picked up the bowl. Between bites of hot, buttery toast I ate my rice and after I set my empty bowl down I sipped at my glass.
"Feeling better right?" Narumi asked, giving me a grin when he noticed that I'd finished both the rice and the toast. "You don't look so pale now." He added, getting a blank stare and with a shrug, he grabbed the blanket gently draping it around my shoulders. "Well it was probably the blood loss but you looked like you were going to pass out a few times."
"I looked that bad, Narumi?" I asked and Narumi nodded, taking the empty bowl and tray away when I yawned loudly. "Wow, that crept up on me," I mumbled not realizing just how exhausted I was until I woke with a start finding Narumi adjusting what looked like the contents of a linen closet over me.
"Good morning, Jean. You fell asleep on me yesterday." Narumi told me and when my eyes widened he chuckled. "Actually that's a good thing. You need all the rest you can get." He pointed out, helping me sit before he adjusted a few of the blankets that slipped off.
"Didn't think I was that tired," I muttered and Narumi shrugged, sitting beside me where I rested my head on his shoulder. "Still it's nice not having to worry about fighting...at least until the next sicko shows up," I added and Narumi sniggered, draping an arm around my shoulder.
"The Yatagarasu is making the last one comfortable," Raidou commented, causing my head to jerk up. "Don't worry, Jean he's not going to cause any more harm. You can count on that." He added, nodding towards Narumi who kept a firm grip on my hands when they began to tremble. "I need to speak with the Herald again but I just thought I'd let you know how the case was going." Without another word he exited the room choosing not to mention that his demons had vanished.
"I just hope we can find Okuninushi and Kurama Tengu, Raidou. Jean doesn't need those two causing her any more pain." Gouto commented and Raidou nodded, leaving the agency as his boss turned his attention back to his girlfriend.
"Deep breaths, Jean. Raidou's right about that bastard." Narumi whispered, lightly patting my hands as I lowered my head. Once he caught my lower lip quivering he sighed, holding me close when I began to sob. I remember Narumi stroking my hair, trying not to touch my still-healing back as he held me close. "That wound will heal before you know it. Hopefully, mine'll do the same." Narumi added when I lifted my head, brushing at my red eyes before I looked down at his waist.
"How is it?" I asked and he just shrugged, grimacing slightly. "Sorry I've been so focused on my own injuries I even forgot about yours," I whispered but Narumi shook his head, giving the tip of my nose a kiss that made me smile. "Can you ever forgive me?"
"Of course, I can, Jean," Narumi answered and I managed a weak laugh, leaning in close enough to kiss him. After a very quick pause, Narumi kissed me back, running his fingers through my hair.
