Episode 3

King of the seas

After managing to get the newest tyrannosaur; a male named Tom. Nigel decides to check on Matilda to see if she would get along with Tom. To do this; Nigel begins to make his way towards the tyrannosaur hill. When he gets to the top of the hill, and the two separate paddocks. He heads over to where Matilda's paddock is; that is when Nigel begins to observe her.

As Nigel is observing her; he sees that she seems a bit more relaxed. Thinking this is a good sign; Nigel gets on the radio.

"Bob, I think it would be a good time to bring in Tom, but don't put him in the paddock yet. We have got to see how she will handle him being near to her." Nigel explains.

Moments later a truck is coming up the hill, and with it is a rowdy tyrannosaurus. The cargo crate on the back of the truck is starting to rattle; as Tom is starting to become restless. When they get near Matilda's paddock; Matilda starts to stop relaxing. She slowly starts to get up as she can smell Tom. Smelling this intruder; Matilda begins to growl.

As the truck begins to approach the paddock; Matilda begins to feel agitated. Tom, however just begins to feel just a little bit excited. When the truck is just near the fence; Matilda lets out a loud roar to Tom; as if letting him know to back off. Tom manages to get his out from the grate, and tries to utter some soothing growls, but they don't seem to work. Matilda continues to give some warning roars to Tom; telling him to stay away.

"So, now what do we do now? Cause it appears that Matilda doesn't want anything to do with him" Bob asks observing this behavior.

"Well, I think for now; we had better just see how he will get along with Terrance. Cause I remember when I went to get these two, the male had formed like a little bachelor group. Kind of like what some animals do today." Nigel explains.

So, the truck begins to turn around; away from Matilda, and begins to make its way towards the other paddock. Terrance seems a bit curious as to what is going on, and begins to look at the truck with curiosity. Bob makes his way towards the paddock gate, and begins to unlock the gate. Seeing that he is now free; Tom begins to make his way out of the truck. When he does; that is when he sees Terrance in the area.

Terrance is a little weary of the male being in his are, and growls trying to show the male who is the boss. However, Tom walks over to where Terrance is, and it is clear that Tom is a bit bigger. Terrance seeing how much bigger Tom is to him; begins to get submissive around him. Tom growls at the shorter Terrance, and walks close to him; as if he is trying to be like an older brother to the youngster.

"Wow would you look at that. That went better than I had hoped" Nigel says.

"Aye, and how did you think it would have gone?" Bob asks.

"To be honest I thought either the two would claim separate areas of the park, or we would have kind of a bloody mess to clean up." Nigel replies. "But, as you can see the two males seem to be getting along, and hopefully Matilda will sometime soon be ready for mating."

With that Nigel heads back towards the time portal, and starts to set in the coordinates. With the coordinates set; Nigel gets his jeep ready. As he is getting ready; Nigel manages to grab his book on North American Dinosaurs; just in case he finds one in the area he might grab. Nigel then gets the jeep in gear, and heads for the open portal. He manages to make it through the other side of the portal, but finds that the jeep with the speed is about to head for the edge of a cliff!

Luckily Nigel manages to stop the jeep just as it is about to go over. He manages to back the jeep up a little, so that he doesn't go over. Confused Nigel gets out, and starts to have a look around. He notices behind him a mountain area, and in front is what looks like the pacific ocean.

"How in the world did I wind up on this crazy part?" Nigel thinks to himself as he looks over the cliff.

"Well, I guess I have no other option, but to start exploring." Nigel says to the camera as he grabs some gear from the back of the jeep. "And, I know just the first place we might just begin exploring" as the camera is showing the ocean rumbling on the cliffs.

Nigel begins to make his way towards the coast, as he is doing so, he begins to hear some loud bellowing; like something big. Cautious, Nigel hides behind some trees, and observes just what made that sound. He is awestruck by what made that sound; a big sauropod herd that has gathered to munch on some of the trees.

"Wow would you look at that; a whole herd of alamosaurus. These sauropods would be known to be the last of the sauropods to live, cause we all know what happened. After the meteor crashed the environment just couldn't support big animals like this anymore." Nigel explains as he is awestruck by the sauropods.

One of the alamosaurs sees Nigel, and out of curiosity lowers its head towards him. The sauropod lets out a low grunt; then raises its head back up into the trees. Nigel continues exploring the surrounding area; when he sees something else that is nearby. Nigel becomes cautious when he sees what it is; a large ceratopsian dinosaur. The animal looks similar to a triceratops, but it has a larger frill, and longer brow horns.

The dinosaur hears Nigel's footsteps, but doesn't pay any attention to them. Nigel continues to walk just little closer; this time it seems the ceratopsian is starting to take notice of Nigel, and growls. Nigel slowly back off a little, but at the same time is experiencing the thrill of a lifetime seeing this animal.

"Now this a dinosaur I've always wanted to see. Now you guys know that we have a triceratops back in the park, however this is a dinosaur that has been in debate for a long time. This dinosaur is known as torosaurus, and the reason for the debate is cause it is thought that triceratops was the teenage form of torosaurus. But I can say after looking at this animal, and knowing how Theo is also a triceratops. I can say that the two are completely different animals; cause if you look at the torosaurus you can immediately tell they are different. I mean just look at the frill; it is longer than Theo's, and Theo is full grown now. Also, you can tell the difference cause the torosaurus's horns are actually a bit longer than a triceratops." Nigel explains as he is looking at the camera.

As Nigel is observing the torosaurus; he decides to try something. Nigel reaches down, and plucks some of the ferns that litter the ground. He then tries to offer it to the torosaur, but the torosaur just huffs at him; as if telling him to back off. Taking the hint; Nigel backs away from the ceratopsian. With that encounter; Nigel continues trekking through the forest.

As he is trekking; that is when he hears an all too familiar bellow. Recognizing that bellow; Nigel heads towards the sound. It is then that Nigel finds he is in a valley, and in that valley, he sees an amazing sight. He sees a herd of triceratops forming a circle around their young, and a t-rex trying to find a way past the herd. Nigel pulls out his binoculars to get a better look at what is going on.

As he is trying to get a good look; Nigel doesn't know that he is near a cliff. When Nigel tries to stand up to get a good view; some of the gravel rocks begin to give way, and Nigel finds himself slipping with the gravel over the cliff. Nigel manages to make it down the cliff safely, but finds that he is near the ocean.

"Well, that plan didn't go the way I hoped it would. See I was hoping to observe more behavior of the tyrannosaurus." Nigel explains as he looks out into the ocean. "But I might just be able to show you guys something."

Nigel takes off his pack, and begins to pull his scuba gear.

"Even if we won't be able to observe some tyrannosaurs; I might be able to show you guys something worthwhile. See the late cretaceous period had a lot more diversity in the water then on land." Nigel explains as he begins to head into the ocean.

Nigel dives right into the ocean, and begins to explore the deep blue. Some coral reefs begin to appear as Nigel begins to go further out into the sea. As he goes deeper; Nigel notices something floating in the currents up ahead. Curious Nigel gets closer to see what it is, and is surprised by what it is. Something that looks like a snail's shell, but bigger, and has tentacles is bobbing in the ocean current. Nigel's eyes widen when he gets a closer look; after he gets a good look it is then he signals the camera man that they need to head up towards the surface.

When he gets to the surface; Nigel removes the mask.

"Wow! Did you guys see that? That was an ammonite an ancient species that is related to modern cuttlefish, and squid. They would have been prey for some of the predators that are out there in those waters, and I think now would be a good time to explore some of these predators."

Nigel begins to make his way back to the beach, and starts to set up the time portal. When he gets back; Nigel begins to talk over an idea with head keeper Bob.

"So, Nigel what idea do you have now? Cause you know how much Terrance really needs a mate." Bob asks.

"Believe me I know how much he needs a mate, but I got a bigger plan for the park. And, I need you to build a bigger tank; something that is for something bigger then the megalodon." Nigel explains.

"Alright I'll see what I can do. Wait a minute, did you say something bigger then the megalodon?!" Bob asks in surprise. "What possibly be bigger than that oversized tuna?"

"You'll find out, but first let's deal with finding a mate for Terrance." Nigel replies.

Nigel then heads out towards his bungalow; to rethink of his strategy. He heads over to his bookshelf, and pulls out a book on tyrannosaurs. He then turns towards the section about tyrannosaur mating behavior, and begins to read.

"So, what we need to figure out is how we are going to get our tyrannosaurs to start breeding. Cause right now out there; as you can see some of them are starting to get out of control" Nigel says thinking out loud. "Wait I think I got it, but I need to talk to Suzanne about it."

That night Nigel calls a meeting with Suzanne, and Bob. He then tells them the plan to re-introduce Matilda to Tom.

"So, you want to try again to get the two tyrannosaurs to breed; then once that done put him back in with Terrance?" Bob asks a little confused.

"So, how do you plan to have the two not fight anymore?" Suzanne asks.

"Well, I think what we need to do is; I know we kept them apart, but we might need to start putting them together slowly. Like move the pens a bit closer together; have Tom get just a little bit closer to Matilda." Nigel explains.

"I think that might be able to work; cause she could get to see him, and let the two bond in their own way." Suzanne replies.

"Yeah, but aren't you kind of afraid that the two would start fighting as soon as they see each other?" Bob asks.

"Not if we do this slowly; the mistake we made last time was we went just a little bit fast. The two predators need a chance to know each other first." Nigel explains.

In the morning everyone is meeting over at Matilda's paddock, and then some work begins on Tom's pen. Part of Tom's paddock is extended out towards Matilda's paddock just a little bit; after the work is done Tom is released back into his paddock, and goes to check out the new area that is added. Only for him to be snarled at by Matilda; who still isn't that comfortable with him being near her.

"Well, I think this might work, but then again I might be wrong." Nigel says to himself seeing that.

After the progress on the change of the paddocks; Nigel heads back to back to his bungalow. It is then he finds a particular book on his shelf that is about sea monsters; he grabs that book, and takes it over towards his desk. Nigel begins to turn the pages; until he comes to the page about a particular monster.

"Now we still need to find a female rex for Terrance, but from that same era came this monster." Nigel says explaining to the camera as he turns the book around to show the image of what they might be going after. The image show something that has the snout, and jaws of a crocodile; with the body of a whale. It even has four flippers two on each side of its body; it even has a long tail that looks like it could be used as a rudder.

"This the true king of the oceans; known as the mosasaurus. It was the largest of all prehistoric sea monsters; bigger then the megalodon we have now. Just imagine if we were to bring this into this park; course we would have to keep it, and the megalodon separated." Nigel explains.

After explaining about the mosasaurus; Nigel gets his diving gear ready, and heads back towards his jeep ready to go back to the cretaceous. Nigel puts the diving gear in the back, but then remembers something else he has go back for. Nigel comes back with a little help from some of the crew with a sail boat on a trailer. Nigel manages to hook the trailer up to the jeep, and thanks the crew for their help. After getting the trailer hooked up; Nigel gets the time portal ready, and heads right through it.

On the other side of the time portal; Nigel once again finds himself on a deserted beach. As he is driving along Nigel notices something in the sand; a set of very familiar footprints. Recognizing the footprints Nigel begins to follow them; a little further down the beach Nigel finds the dinosaur responsible for the tracks. Nigel slowly gets just a little bit closer; as to be careful not to startle the animal. A tyrannosaur is on the beach scavenging for food, and Nigel is little farther off.

The tyrannosaur manages to find a carcass of something that has washed up on the beach; something that looks about as big as a whale. Nigel manages to hide behind a rock, and gets the rest of the crew to as well.

"Now what that tyrannosaur is scavenging on; is exactly what we are looking for, a mosasaurus. It was the largest of all marine reptiles, and it was called the king of the seas. Now all we have to do is figure out how to get one, but first I'm going to try something that is both crazy, and stupid at the same time. So, I should warn you viewers; not to try this at home." Nigel explains.

"My heart is in my throat as I start to walk up to where the tyrannosaurus is. I make sure I'm close enough to the dead mosasaurus, so that the tyrannosaur doesn't even see me unless I want it to. But first I have already set up the time portal, and begin to initiate the next part of my plan. I then pull off a chunk of the carcass; the rex then hears the chunk being pulled off, and growls. I start to back away slowly, but it is too late the rex has seen me, and she does not like me in her territory.

Knowing that she sees me; I begin to make my way back to the jeep, and hit the gas. The rex tries to keep up, and we both make it through the portal." Nigel thinks to himself as he puts the new rex in the quarantine pen.

After making sure that new female rex is properly in the quarantine pen; Nigel once again begins to make his way back through the time portal.

Back on the other side of the portal; Nigel goes over to the area where the rex was feasting. It is there Nigel approaches the carcass of the dead mosasaur.

"This was one of the great predators of the cretaceous seas, the king of the oceans. Now take a look at these jaws we have right here." Nigel says pointing at the exposed jaws on the beach. "A lot of people seem to think that with these massive jaws that they could basically swallow things whole, but that isn't true. See mosasaurus was an ambush predator; it would attack when it was least expected, and what it would do is once a prey item is the mouth. It would then have a strong grip, and uses the teeth to hold its prey in place. Then with the muscles in the jaws it would start to slowly put pressure on the prey, then make the prey got to the back of the throat where the real shredding starts. The back of mouth you see had another set of teeth, and they would shred the meat to little chunks to go right into the stomach. That my friends is why the mosasaurus was the king of the seas, and that is the one we are going after."

Nigel heads over to the jeep, and starts unpacking some supplies. It is then that he heads over to a sailboat; that he has already put in the water. As he is boarding the boat; Nigel helps some of the camera crew onboard. With all of them onboard; Nigel gets the boat out to sea.

Out in the open ocean; Nigel gets something set up on the deck. The object that he is trying to set up looks like it is made up of metal poles, or bars. Once it is all put together; Nigel explains that is the shark cage that he first used when he was going after the megalodon the first.

"Now I'm going to use this to observe the mosasaurus, and figure out the best way to capture it." Nigel explains as he gets his wetsuit on.

Once he is in the cage; it is hooked up to a crane. The crane begins to lower Nigel, and the cage deeper into the ocean. Deep in the water is an endless dark blue, and Nigel readies his spear gun.

"Man, this is truly terrifying; I mean I was only a little bit scared when I was going after the megalodon, but this the mosasaur we are after. The mosasaur was the top predator of its time, and it is even bigger then the megalodon." Nigel replies.

Nigel reaches into a metal box; that is nearby. He pulls out what looks to be a huge chunk of meat, and attaches it to the end of his spear. He then starts to wave the end of the spear outside of the cage; nothing seems to be coming near the area. However, something has caught the scent, and is heading right towards them. Using its paddle like flippers; the thing begins to move towards them. Nigel on the other hand is just about to give up; when the cameraman notices something coming up from the gloom.

Something that looks about as big as a whale, but with head of a crocodile comes rushing towards the side of the cage. The animal grabs the chunk of meat on the end of Nigel's spear, and nearly drags Nigel towards the end of the cage; before Nigel is forced to let go. At this point the creature eats the meat, and leaves the spear to sink to the bottom of ocean. Seeing all this; Nigel gives the signal to surface.

Back on the deck of the ship; Nigel is still excited, and in shock by what he saw.

"Wow! That was really amazing! I mean that was a mosasaur, the appex predator of the seas. The true king of the oceans." Nigel exclaims. "Now we just have to figure out how to get it to prehistoric park. To do that I think we might have to go down, and retrieve that spear gun."

Once again Nigel gets his wetsuit on, and dives into the ocean. Carefully he begins to make his way towards the bottom; he brought a flashlight with him in case something comes along. Nigel is just about to the bottom when something begins to come out of the gloom. Nigel shines his light in that direction; only to be surprised by what he sees. Another marine reptile, but this one with a long neck, and flippers comes out of the gloom. The reptile cranes its neck towards him; as if it is curious, but keeps swimming away.

"Wow! Did you see that?! That was a plesiosaur one of the early marine reptiles. Now we had better keep an eye out, cause where that plesiosaur was; there are bound to be mosasaurs around." Nigel explains.

As Nigel is explaining; the cameraman points something out in the distance, and Nigel sees what it is. That is when he knows that time is running out to find that spear gun; as the same mosasaur begins to get closer. Nigel begins to look around in some of coral for his spear gun, as the mosasaur starts to swim closer. Nigel can feel his heart begin to race; as the mosa is almost on top of him. At the last moment; Nigel manages to find the spear just as the mosa is about on top.

The mosasaur glide over him; as Nigel hides in the reefs. Nigel begins to calm down as he sees the mosa disappear right back into the gloom of the ocean. Now that he has the spear back; Nigel makes his way back up towards the boat.

Back on the boat Nigel lays out some plans on a table, and begins to go over them.

"Okay, so here is what we are going to do. So, from that last experience down at the bottom; we have learned that the mosasaurs can be very territorial with anything that entered its domain" Nigel begins to explain.

"Yeah, and don't think it is such a good idea to go back down there again!" One of the crewmen exclaim.

"Well, unfortunately we have to; in order to save the mosasaur from being extinct again." Nigel replies with a stern look.

Back in the park; Head keeper Bob has almost got another aquarium set up for the mosasaur. He has gotten the acrylic glass set up; so that way people can be able to see the king of the seas.

"Well, I got everything all set up for whatever Nigel's next big adventure is going to be." Head keeper Bob says to the camera.

In the past; Nigel once again dons his wet suit, and heads back into the water. He has with him the two time poles, and something with some meat on a hook. Nigel heads down to the bottom of the ocean, and gets the poles set up. He then activates the poles, and on the other side the portal opens up in the aquarium; sending ocean water into the tank. Seeing that the portal is now active Nigel gets to work on part two of his plan.

Nigel grabs the meat, and begins to wave it around; making sure that some of the chunks begin to flake off. Off in the distance; a mosasaur is cruising the ocean. As he is in the deep part of the ocean; that is when his nose picks up the sense of something. The mosa recognizing the smell of the meat; begins to make a beeline towards where Nigel is. Meanwhile, as Nigel is waving the meat around; he sees the silhouette of the mosasaur coming right towards them. Seeing this Nigel watches as the mosa gets closer; when it is close enough Nigel manages to swim away, just as the mosa grabs the meat, and heads for the portal.

Back in the park the mosa enters the aquarium with a splash! After the splash; Bob goes to see what the big commotion was, and smiles when he sees what it was. The mosasaur starts to swim around in the enclosure, and feels right at home in this deep aquarium.

In the next episode Nigel heads over to Mongolia where he meets two of the most dangerous dinosaurs; one with teeth, and one that uses its claws.
