Fate/Equitem Magum: The Mage of Hope
Chapter 1: The Caster and the Wizard
Fuyuki City
In an alleyway in Fuyuki, a hooded woman sat. If one were to see her, it would look like she's fading away, which is exactly the case.
This woman is Medea. The Caster Servant summoned to fight in the 5th Holy Grail War by a Magus from the Mage's Association. They would fight against 6 other Masters, and the pair who wins would be granted one wish each by the Holy Grail.
However, her Master was a coward who would rather hide until the other participants of the War kill each other, and a monster that would use children as sacrifices for Mana Crystals. Caster is many things, but a willing child killer isn't one of them.
So, she devised a plan. She tricked her "Master" into wasting his command seals on trivial things, playing the role of a loyal Servant and convincing him that he wouldn't need them. When he used the last of his Command Seals, she stabbed him with Rule Breaker, killing him and freeing her from their contract. She then proceeded to free the children, and she herself left that horrid place.
However, without a Master Anchoring her to the World, she would soon disappear. Not that she regrets killing that bastard and freeing his captives, but she does lament that she will die before the War even began. And so, Caster sat alone, accepting her fate.
Little does she know that the last hope is coming her way.
While Soma Haruto enjoyed his worldwide travel, it's nice to be back in Japan. Though he's not going back to Tokyo just yet. He decided to visit other places in Japan before going home. Having visited places such as Fukui-Ken (where he visited Nitoh's Grandma), Kyoto, Akihabara, and Futo, he decided to make a quick stop to Fuyuki. There wasn't anything special in that place, but it was known for the disaster that happened 10 years ago.
There was a fire. It engulfed a good chunk of the place, with thousands dying. It was a tragic event, but unfortunately, Haruto couldn't have done anything at the time. He was still a child at the time. Even now, with his abilities, he still wouldn't have been able to do much. No one even know how it started. What could anyone do to prevent it? Still, if he had his powers then, he could have at least saved some people. But that was in the past. All he can do now is to prevent others from dying in an event like that. As long as he's around, no human around him would die.
But for now, Haruto is riding his Machine Winger in the Streets of Fuyuki. Maybe he could find a Doughnut Shop somewhere. It probably won't be as good as Doughnut Shop Hungry's, but it's better than nothing.
Suddenly, he saw a glowing light in an Alley that he passed. Curious, he stopped his Motorcycle, and went to check what's happening. There, he saw a Woman. She's wearing a hood that conceals most of her face.
The woman noticed him, but she didn't say anything. But Haruto can tell that she is in need of help. After all, fading away is not exactly a normal thing that humans do.
"Miss, are you alright? Do you need anything?" he asked.
"M-Mana. I-I need Mana," she said with a weak voice.
Haruto was surprised. Mana? Is she like Koyomi, who would die without Mana? He's not really that knowledgeable in the magic of the world besides his own, so there might be other beings that needs it to survive.
"Give me your hand," he told her. She looked at him confused, before obliging. He puts a ring on her right middle finger, making her blush. Then, he scanned the ring on his belt.
"PLEASE, PLEASE!" the belt announced.
And with that, the woman in front of him became solid again. Slowly, she was able to stand up. She looked at him curiously.
"Who are you?" she asked him.
Haruto smiled, and flashed the ring on his right hand. "I'm Soma Haruto. The Mage of Hope."
For some reason, that made her feel warm inside.
Caster explained to him her situation. How she is a Servant summoned to fight in the Holy Grail War. To her surprise, despite clearly being a Mage, he has no idea what the Holy Grail War is. Apparently, he doesn't even know that there is a Mage's Association, which she finds strange, but she decides not to question him about his past for now.
She also told him what happened with her original Master. She was afraid that he would hate her for it, but instead, he commended her for saving the Children, and said that her old master deserved what happened to him, and that he would have done the same thing. She noticed that he was holding back his anger while talking, though she figured that if she were to tell any other decent humans of what her Master had been doing, they would probably get angry too.
On the subject of Masters, she also told him that without one, she wouldn't be able to remain in this World.
"What if I become your Master?" suggested Haruto.
Caster eyed him suspiciously. He might be using her just to get the Grail. After all, who wouldn't want an omnipotent wish granting device. "Do you have a wish for the Grail?"
He shrugged. "I'm not sure yet, but what's more important is that you remain here and fight."
He smiled to her once again. "I assure you. If I become your Master, I would do anything I can so that you'll see it through the end." If there is one thing about Haruto Soma, it's that he'll never turn down someone in need.
Caster is taken aback. She didn't expect him to help her out like that. In fact, she was planning to hypnotize him into becoming her Master, so she can do as she pleases, but to think that someone would willingly help a "witch" like herself. Are there really people like that in this world? He might be lying, but she of all people knows the tone of a man making empty promises. He's not one of them.
At this point, Caster realized that she is blushing. She quickly looked away from Haruto. "If that's what you want, then so be it." She added, "If you do find a wish for the Grail, then I will help you in achieving it."
Haruto nodded. "Alright then. So, how do we do this?"
Caster taught Haruto the summoning Incantation. Once he learned it, he reached out his right arm to her direction, and began speaking.
"Heed my words, my will creates your body, and your sword creates my destiny! If you heed the Grails call and obey my will and reason, then answer me! Obey me, and answer my call! Will you share your destiny with me or not!"
It was her turn to speak. "In the name of Caster, I shall answer your pledge. You shall be my Master, and I shall be your Servant!"
With the contract forming, Command spells appeared on Haruto's right hand. Its appearance is very similar to that of a dragon.
And just like that, Soma Haruto is officially a participant of the Holy Grail War.
In the days leading up to the Holy Grail War, Haruto and Caster made several preparations. They took residence to Ryuudouji Temple, one of the places where the Holy Grail could Manifest. Caster was able to siphon the prana there, and combined with the ones Haruto is already supplying her, Caster is more powerful than ever.
Caster linked Haruto's familiars to her Crystal Ball. That way, Caster can scout without having to leave the Temple. Since Haruto is the more capable fighter, it's decided that he would be the one fighting while Caster gives support. Caster was unsure how he could possibly match against Servants, but he assured her that he can handle it. She still has her doubts, but she decided to respect his decision.
During this time, Caster got to learn of Haruto's abilities. He told her that he unlocked his magical powers when a Mage who wanted to revive his daughter kidnapped him and others with latent magical potential to use as sacrifices for a ritual (this explains Haruto's disgust at her former Masters methods).
Apparently, the Mage forcibly awaken what he referred to as their "inner Phantoms" that ended up killing their hosts mind and taking over their body (really all he did was forcibly open their dormant Magic Circuits, though how he was able to corrupt them, she doesn't know). Haruto however, was able to resist, and instead, the Mage trained him as his apprentice instead. However, it's clear that he never actually taught him Magecraft. Instead, he gave him a Mystic Code that can somehow access Second Magic, where he gets most of his abilities with the help of Mana Crystal powered rings, each with a different effect.
Since then, he fought the rogue Phantoms that were born from the ritual (which turned out to also be another plot to revive his daughter, but that's another story entirely). Using his belt and different rings, Haruto can use all four elements (a rarity among mages, even rarer if he could use the fifth element, but she'll test that out some other time) along with other abilities such as grabbing things from different places, make his arms bigger, make himself smaller, and many more. Learning of all this definitely made Caster more confident with her Master's chances against Servants.
Finally, Caster did something that has never been done in the history of Holy Grail Wars. She planned to summon her own Servant. The Mana that she's gaining from both the area's leylines and Haruto is more than enough for her to anchor another Heroic Spirit. In her room/workshop, she drew the summoning circle. Haruto entered the room holding a light blue jacket.
"I found this Haori lying around. Will this work as a catalyst?"
"Yes, I suppose that would do." With the knowledge the Grail gave her, she recognized it as one from the Shinsengumi. Many of their members can be summonable as Heroic Spirits, and using the Haori, she's guaranteed to summon a powerful Servant.
She took the Haori from Haruto, puts it in the middle of the summoning circle, and she said the incantation.
Heed my words! My will creates your body and your sword creates my destiny!
If you heed the grail's call and obey my will and reason, then answer my summoning!
I hereby swear that I shall be all the good in this world! That I shall defeat all evil in the world!
Seventh heaven clad, And the great words of power, Come forth from the circle of bindings, Guardian of Scales!
When the light faded away, a woman is now standing in the circle. She has pink hair and is wearing a pink kimono.
"Servant, Assassin, Okita Souji," She introduced herself. "I ask of you, are you my—" She paused when she noticed the Haori lying on the ground.
"Hey, you found my Haori!" she exclaimed, her voice becoming higher.
As the Servant admired and hugged her Haori, there's one thing going on through Caster's head.
She's so cute!
Had it been any other woman, she would have killed her as to not take her Master's attention from her. Her, however, she doesn't mind. In fact, she wouldn't mind the idea of the three of them getting in bed together…
She was snapped out of her perverse thoughts when she realized that Haruto and Assassin are both staring at her, making her face red from embarrassment.
Caster collected herself, and announced, "I am Caster. Your Master."
Assassin's eyes widened. "Eh? A Servant summoning a Servant? I didn't know you could do that." She pointed at Haruto. "Then I guess you are…"
"I'm Soma Haruto," he bowed. "I'm her Master."
Caster nodded. "And for the duration of the war, he would be acting as your Master."
Both her Master and Servant looked at her in confusion.
"I figured it's best if my presence is concealed for now," she explained. "To do that, Assassin will act as your Servant so that others won't know of my existence. I will support you from the temple instead."
"I guess that makes sense," said Haruto.
"The Caster class is best for magical support after all," added Assassin.
Caster smiled. With a Master with access to Second Magic, and with the Captain of the Shinsengumi's first Unit as her Servant, along with her own abilities that surpass that of modern mages, they are sure to win the Holy Grail.
The rest of the waiting period are spent with Caster strengthening the Temple's defenses and herself while Haruto and Okita trained by sparring with each other. Both are skilled in Sword fighting despite their differing styles, and always end in a tie. Caster watched the two of them with great interest.
She has more or less fallen in love with Haruto. He's the only person to ever show her unconditional kindness (there was also Heracles, but they barely interacted). Sure, based on his character, he would have done the same thing that he did for her to anyone else, but even the nicest people that she met in life will treat her like an untrustworthy Witch. Haruto treats her how he would treat everyone else, and that's a nice change for once. Though she does fear that if he learns who she really is, that might change. Then she simply has to make sure that he never learns of her past.
She ended up liking Okita as well. She's cute, tiny, and strong. They learned that as a Heroic Spirit, she still retained the illness that killed her in life, causing her to become weak in random periods. This doesn't dissuade Okita, and her one wish is to see this war to the very end and participate in the final battle. This makes Caster's desire to win even greater than before, especially when Haruto himself figured out what he wants with the grail. True to his character, he didn't want it for selfish reasons, instead wanting to give it to his friend, a normal man without any Magic Circuits whose life force is slowly being drained by the Ancient Mystic Code/Phantasmal Species that he's bonded to. The Grail's Unlimited Mana Reservoir could theoretically satisfy the Chimera, and if that doesn't work, then they could simply wish for him to become an actual Mage, so that he can provide the Chimera with Mana without killing him as a consequence. Truly her Master is a kind hearted man.
As for Medea herself, she only wants one thing now. To win the War and stay with Haruto and Okita for the rest of her second life. When she was first summoned, she never would've thought that this would be her wish, but she never expected that she will meet two wonderful people that she would love this greatly, and she hopes to keep them in her life. She would make sure that the three of them would survive this, and they will live happily together.
Soon enough, their waiting came to an end, and the 5th Holy Grail War began at last.
Night One of the Holy Grail War
Haruto, now in his armored form, and Okita, the two riding the Machine Winger, followed the direction that the Garuda Plamonster is showing them. The Saber Servant has been summoned. Caster observed her through the familiar, and she found that her Master is but a Novice. Normally, the Saber Class is the strongest of the three Knight Classes, but with her Master, she isn't as strong as she is supposed to be. With that, Caster is confident that Haruto and Okita would be able to defeat her. The sooner that she's out of the War, the better.
While her Master and Servant head to Saber's current location, Caster watches through her Crystal Ball. She can see through the eyes of not only the 4 Plamonsters, but also Okita. Since she's also a familiar, she was able to link her with her Crystal Ball. The Plamonsters scout the city, watching for signs of enemies. Golem however, is shy, so instead he stayed with Caster, making an Okita figurine.
"How amazing is this!?" exclaimed Okita, who Caster can hear through their psychic link. "The war is just starting and already we'll be fighting Saber!"
"Be careful though," said Caster. "Her current circumstance makes her weaker than she should be, but she's still Saber. With your condition, she could catch you off guard and find an opening."
"Don't worry Caster," said Haruto. "I won't let that happen. I'm sure with our combined powers, we'll be able to deal with her."
"Yes!" said Okita cheerfully. Caster smiled. Besides sparring with each other, their teamwork was also tested with Caster making them fight her army of skeletons. They dealt with them without any problem. They learned to look out for each other, so against one opponent, they are sure to win.
"Be wary of Archer though. I'm sure he's lurking around there somewhere," she warned her Master and Servant.
"Hai!" they both answered.
She changes the Crystals point of view from Garuda to Unicorn's, and she now sees Saber waiting in front of the church. She has to laugh at what the Servant is wearing. An overgrown yellow raincoat covering her armor. Is her Master that of a Novice that she can't even enter spirit form?
Though she has to wonder about Archer. With him nowhere to be seen, he would be a problem. And his Master, unlike Saber's, seems to be competent. She tries to remove her worries. Archer is the Heroic Spirit of the Bow. He's only good for long rage attacks. If they're careful, Haruto and Okita can easily block his arrows, or maybe she can even block it for them. This would be easy.
She has no idea how wrong she is.
Fuyuki Church
Saber waited outside the Church for her new master, Emiya Shirou, to learn more about the Holy Grail War and decide whether or not he would join. She really hopes that he would. At first, she was stunned to learn that he is the son of Emiya Kiritsugu, and was wary at first. But instantly, she learned that he was nothing like his father. Kiritsugu is cold and pragmatic. Shirou, on the other hand, is kind, if not naive. He is a Novice unfortunately, meaning that she's not in her full power. But if her fight with Lancer is any indication, she could at least catch up with the other Servants, which is all that matters.
She heard the sound of a Motorcycle coming her way. At first, she thinks nothing of it. It's probably just someone taking a late-night ride. That line of thought changed when it stopped at the Church, right where she's standing. Two people got off the bike. One is a Man wearing a black armor decorated with a long coat and a silver helmet with a ruby mask, giving the appearance of jewelry. He's wearing a Belt with a hand shaped Buckle, and two rings on each hand. The other is a woman with pink hair and wearing a Shinsengumi Haori. She realizes that these two are likely a Master-Servant Pair.
Saber draws her sword. "Identify yourself," she ordered.
The Servant takes out her own sword. "Servant Assassin, Okita Souji."
Saber was surprised. To think that she would casually reveal her true name, when revealing it would give her a disadvantage. What's more, she doesn't look like an Assassin. The Assassin Class, as far as she's aware, are composed of mercenaries whose preferred methods are sneak attacks. She, however, is a fellow Swordsman, and willing to fight her in combat. Assassin, she noticed was examining her as well, then her eyes widened.
"Eh? You stole my face!"
Now that she mentions it, the two of them look surprisingly similar. Besides the fact they have different colored eyes, hair, and the glaring fact that one is English while the other is Japanese, their facial features are mostly the same.
"I'm sorry, but I have to kill you now," Assassin announced. Her Master puts on a ring and scans it in the belt that he's wearing. "CONNECT, PLEASE!" the belt said. A magic circle appears beside him, where he takes out his own sword. The two takes on a fighting stance, which Saber immediately follows.
"Now," Assassin's Master began, his voiced echoing through his helmet. "It's sh—"
"I won't let you do that."
The three turned to see a white-haired little girl in purple clothing. Saber kind of recognizes the girl. Wait. White hair, red eyes…
An Einzbern Homunculus.
"I won't let you kill Saber. Only my Servant is allowed to do that."
"That Little girl is a Master?" Assassin's Master gasped. Assassin looks surprised as well. Saber herself can't help but feel disgusted. Would the Einzberns really stoop this low? Sending a child who looks no older than Irisveil and Kiritsugu's daughter the last time she saw her, to fight in this war?
The girl turned to Saber. "Hey, do you know the name 'Einzbern'?"
Saber didn't know what to say. The girl took her silence as an answer though.
"I guess not. There's no way a Servant would remember."
That's when Shirou and Rin came out of the Church, and their attention turned to them.
"Good evening, Oni-Chan!" the Homunculus greeted, rather cheerfully. "My name is Ilya. Ilyasveil von Einzbern." She closed the church gates using wires that is made out of her own hair ("just like Irisveil," Saber thought), and when their attention returned to Ilya, all of them besides Ilya nearly fell down in shock when they saw what could only be Berserker standing beside her.
"I'm gonna kill you now. Berserker, get them!"
"So, Saber," said Assassin nervously. "Any chance we could postpone killing each other and focus on that guy first?"
Saber nodded. "I'll accept this temporary partnership for now. Does your Master accept?"
The two turned to the masked man, who nodded. "I guess we don't have a choice." With that, the three turned to face Berserker.
"Now," the Ringed Mage said again. "It's showtime!"
A/N: Do you know how long it took for me to finalize this concept? This initially started out as a Ghost/Apocrypha Fic, then Ghost/stay night, then an unrelated Fate/Wizard/Miraculous Fic (though elements of that were accidentally reused in the Curse of Angra Mainyu), then stay night/other characters replacing the Servants, to Apocrypha/other characters replacing the Servants (though I still might do that), to stay night/Wizard with Beast as the Saber Servant, and finally, this. It is a shame that due to a certain rule I have, I can't do a stay night/Ghost Fanfic anymore, also because I plan to cross that over with Madoka, but I think it all turned out well in the end.
This is my second fic. Enjoy!
