Weiss Schnee, Remnant of the Ice General

Chapter 3 – Welcome to Beacon

Days flew by and Weiss found herself on board of the ship that was heading to Beacon Academy. The headache and voices were long gone, but despite that she was still feeling agitated.

Weiss looked at the glass of water that she was holding in her hand. She focused and watched as the liquid slowly turned to ice, but at the same time a sharp pain stabbed through her head. It lasted barely a second but was strong enough that she almost dropped the glass.

Seventeen years and she still couldn't use this power without some sort of backlash. The power of Demon's Extract was too much for her. She didn't understand how anyone could withstand its influence. To think that someone was so vile and twisted to freely use its power was unimaginable. But Weiss knew there was one person who managed to control that terrible power.

Her grip on the glass tightened and small cracks appeared around the surface. She stopped; the last thing she wanted was to cause a scene among so many people. She put the glass on a nearby table and pulled out the one thing that could calm her mind, small ornate notebook.

Seeing the pictures inside it always calmed her down. Like the never-ending ice storm came to an end for a few short moments, leaving behind only beautiful plains covered in pure white sheet of snow.

While Weiss was lost in her own thoughts, she missed the two other girls that were aboard the airship.

Ruby was watching her older sister, Yang Xiao Long. She too was a beautiful young woman with beautiful mane of long golden hair and playful lilac eyes. She wears brown jacket with yellow shirt underneath which tightly hug her ample chest. She has black shorts with brown belt and brown boots with yellow knee length tights and short purple scarf wrapped around her left knee.

The normally energetic blond was sitting near a window, lost in her own thoughts. It started two weeks ago when Yang came back home battered and bruised. The only answer Ruby managed to get out of her sister was something about "white haired bitch". Since then, Yang hasn't been acting like her usual self. The last time she's been acting like this was when they were still children.

"Hey Yang, are you alright?" Ruby asked but she already knew the answer.

"Huh? Of course, I'm more than alright. My little sister is going with me to Beacon; this is going to be the best year ever." Yang gave Ruby a bright smile before she pulled her for a hug.

It was fake. Yang's acting wasn't bad at all. Ruby would wager she could fool most people. Not her own sister though. This was one of the few things Ruby hated about Yang. Every time something bad happened Yang would put on a brave face, always acting like a big sister and being there for Ruby.

It wasn't fair. Ruby is younger but that didn't mean she didn't care about Yang just as much. She wanted Yang to know she could rely on her. To tell her when something was bothering her so she could help.

"If you say so, sis." Alas it wasn't something Ruby could force Yang to do. It would be like trying to open a pickle jar, apply too much pressure and the whole glass would break. She would have to believe that Yang could deal with her problems on her own.

"I still can't believe that the headmaster invited you to Beacon two years early. You're totally going to be the bee's knees." Said Yang, this time the tone of her voice was more genuine than before.

The bee's knees? What does that even mean? "I don't want to be 'the bee's knees'. I don't want to be any kind of knees. Just a normal girl with normal knees." Ruby said, before she looked out of the window. They were so high up that they could see her home island.

"Hey look, I can see Signal from up here." Said Yang as both girls continued to admire the view from up here.

"I guess home isn't that far away after all." Despite wanting to go to Beacon all of her life, Ruby couldn't help to feel sad at the fact that she would be leaving her home. She was going to miss not seeing her dad and Zwei every day.

Seeing this Yang put her arm around on Ruby's shoulder. "Hey, cheer up. Beacon is going to be our home now. And I bet there won't be any curfew."

Ruby was about to comment that Yang never cared about the curfew anyway, but stopped when she saw a young man covering his mouth and running towards the nearest trash can where he emptied his stomach. Ruby hoped he wasn't sick; it would be a great disadvantage for him during the initiation test.

"Wow." Yang looked towards the boy and lightly snickered. "I guess the view isn't for everyone." Ruby was about to suggest they go check up on the boy when news report caught her attention.

"The Vale police are still looking for the culprit who brutally killed 26 people. The victims were identified as members of the Red Axe Gang. On the same note, the police are still looking for Roman Torchwick who has been avoiding authorities for several years." Ruby frowned when she heard the first part of the report. 'How can someone be so cruel to kill so many people?'

"Moving on to another topic," The news report continued. "A peaceful Faunus protests against the SDC turned violent when the White Fang attacked one of the SDC's facilities." The report was interrupted by the hologram of a huntress that arrested Ruby few days ago.

"Hello students." She said.

"Who's that?" Yang asked looking at the huntress.

Ruby was about to answer but the hologram beat her to it. "My name is Glynda Goodwitch. Allow me to officially welcome you to Beacon Academy. You are among the privileged few who received the honor of being selected to study at this prestigious academy. We are experiencing a great time of peace and it will be your duty to uphold it for years to come. For that you will be trained in our school, we will provide you with the necessary knowledge and training to protect this world."

Ruby listened with excitement, it really sounded like she was training to become a hero. That heroic image was quickly ruined when she noticed a gift the puking student left on her sister's boots. "Oh gross. Yang you have puke on your boots."

"What?!" The blond's eyes widen. "Gross, gross, gross!"

"No, Yang don't come any closer. Get away from me! Get away!" The last thing Ruby wanted was to have her favorite cape covered in vomit. No one could say that the ride to Beacon was boring.

As Yang tried to find a restroom to clean of her boots, she passed a couple currently engaged in a conversation

"Ren?" An orange haired girl asked the boy sitting next to her.

"Yes, Nora?" The boy simply replied.

"Do you thing they serve peanuts on this, or is it just regular airplanes?"

Ruby and Yang exited the ship once it landed and came into view of Beacon Academy. The school itself looked like some castle straight out of fairytale, with it being located on a cliff overlooking the city of Vale and tall emerald tower that overlooked the entire place.

"Wow." Ruby whispered in awe at the sight. Yang whistled before her eyes locked on the tower. "That tower is pretty big, do you thing the headmaster is compensating for something?" And just like that the spell was broken.

Ruby groaned, but her mood improved almost immediately when she noticed the weapons other students were carrying. "Look, that girl has a collapsible fire staff, is that a lightning infused guitar, and that boy's sword has an engine! Do you think he can rev it up like a motorcycle?" Ruby felt like she was at heaven.

"Ok sis, calm down before you start drooling." Yang managed to pull Ruby down from Cloud Nine and back into the real world.

"But Yang does weapons are so cool." Ruby explained wanting to examine every single one of them.

"But they are still just weapons." Yang countered and Ruby gasped when she heard that.

"How can you say that?! They are extensions of ourselves, a window to our soul. You can learn a lot from person by seeing their weapon." Ruby said her tone almost sagely.

"Yeah, almost as much as actually talking to someone." Yang laughed before she looked at Ruby. "Why don't you try talking to some people, make some friends?"

Ruby looked like she was considering it before she spoke. "Nope. Besides why would I need friends when I have you?"

Yang looked at her sister, and then she saw couple of her friends back from Signal. A nefarious plan formed in her mind, one that Ruby would thank her for later. Besides everyone said that the best way to learn how to swim is by getting thrown in a lake.

"Actually, there are some friends I have to catch up with. Take care and bye!" And with those words Yang left her younger sister alone amongst strangers hoping she would talk to somebody. She would later come to regret that decision when she learned who Ruby actually ran into.

Weiss looked at the academy with neutral expression. It was certainly impressive, but not as impressive as the academy back in Atlas. She looked ahead and noticed the amount of people at the main entrance. It would be at least several minutes before she could get inside. She entertained the thought of just killing everyone ahead of her. It would certainly be faster. Then again, the headmaster probably wouldn't appreciate her slaughtering his students, despite the fact that most of them would die in the field once they graduate.

Weiss took a deep breath; she knew she shouldn't be thinking like that. Besides she made sure to look through the map before coming here, so she knew there was another way to the amphitheater.

"Yang, wait! I don't even know where the dorms are. Do we even have dorms? I'm so confused." A voice behind her broke her out of her thoughts. She turned around just to see a girl trip over her luggage and land on her weapon case.

"What are you doing?!" Weiss glared at her but stop when she recognized the girl.

"I'm so sorry. I wasn't looking at where I was going and didn't see your stuff there." The girl apologized. She got back up, but froze when she noticed Weiss. Both girls looked each other up and down before their eyes met. Icy blue stared into shining silver.

"It's you!" Both girls said at the exact same time, both with very different tone. Ruby was happy to see a familiar face, but Weiss didn't share her enthusiasm.

"I wanted to talk to you but after they let us go you just disappeared. I mean you were so awesome out there. I've never seen someone with such a control over dust before." Ruby said, but Weiss ignored the girl.

She picked up her weapon case and opened were several small bottles full of dust as well as a sword. It was very similar to the one that was currently hanging at her side, the only think it lacked was the dust chamber, instead the rapier had a simple circular guard.

"Wait, why do you have two different swords?" Ruby asked while her eyes studied the weapon as if it was a piece of art.

"What do you want?" Weiss asked, the tone of her voice was neutral, but the there was a cold edge to it.

"Well, since we already know each other, I thought we could be friends, my uncle always told me true friendship was forged in middle of a battle." She smiled and extended her hand towards. "My name is Ruby Rose."

Weiss was about to dismiss her but stopped at the last second. This wasn't Atlas and she didn't have any allies she could rely on. She was also playing a dangerous game; it would make her life a lot easier if she had subordinates, and someone she could trust. She looked more closely at the younger girl and even Ruby realized that Weiss was judging her.

She could kill her; it would be laughably easy. The girl had her guard down, first mistake when you are around dozens of people with weapons. With one quick swing Ruby's headless corpse would hit the ground; she would never have the chance to put her Aura up. Weiss could clearly see that the girl was inexperienced, she probably hasn't seen a dead body in her life.

But she had a potential and was still young. Weiss could groom her to be someone she can count on. She managed much more with much less, her brother being prime example. She was about to shake Ruby's hand when a girl's voice interrupted them.

"Don't bother trying to befriend her. It's not worth it." Weiss turned around and was caught off guard herself when she noticed the owner of the voice. A young woman with long, black curly hair and amber eyes. She was wearing black west with coattails with white sleeveless shirt underneath. She was also wearing white shorts and her legs were covered by black stockings that gradually changed color into dark purple. She was around the same height as Weiss with her low-heeled black boots. There was also black ribbon that hid her cat ears from others.

There was no question about it. Before her stood Blake Belladonna, the daughter of the founder of the White Fang and if Roman's file was accurate, the right hand of Adam Taurus.

Weiss managed to hide her shock before it could make its way to her face. What was she doing here? Did the White Fang found out she would be attending Beacon and send Blake to assassinate her? If that was the case, they would soon lose one of their lieutenants.

"You know her?" Ruby asked the cat Faunus in hiding.

"Who doesn't? Weiss Schnee, heiress of the Schnee Dust Company, the largest producer of Dust on Remnant. The same company that is infamous for mistreating its workers and has questionable business partners." The terrorist said.

Just now Ruby noticed that Weiss was almost a head taller than her. Her face was shadowed by her cap making her icy-blue eyes stand out as they were currently glaring at the black-haired girl.

"I believe I can introduce myself just fine." Weiss said, she never liked when someone referred to her just as an heiress of the SDC. "Besides if someone doesn't want to work for the SDC they can always quit." She smirked knowing full well that most of the time the only alternative to working in the mine was to starve on the street.

Blake returned Weiss's glare before she turned to Ruby. "Trust me, nothing good will come out of being friends with someone like her." Blake said, and Ruby noticed the honesty in her voice.

But that didn't help Blake much. If she was going to choose between someone she fought alongside with and a girl that rudely barged into their conversation Ruby already knew who she was going to pick.

"I think I can choose my own friends." She said and there was a tone of finality in her voice. Weiss smirked a bit, seeing as the girl actually had some backbone.

Blake shook her head and sighed. For a moment it looked like she would try to say something to persuade her, but didn't. This wasn't her fight, not anymore. "Just don't say I didn't warn you." With those words she turned away.

The Weiss watched Blake leave before she turned to Ruby and extended her hand to her and the red-head reaper shook her hand without a second thought. "It's a pleasure to meet you Ruby." Said Weiss as she flashed Ruby a charming smile.

"Likewise." Ruby said a smile of her own forming on her lips.

After the introduction were done the two girls set off towards Beacon exchanging idle chat. Weiss noticed that Ruby was rather talkative, not that it was a bad thing. After a minute of walking Weiss abruptly stopped and pulled Ruby behind a corner.

"W-w-what are you doing?" Ruby asked but Weiss just pressed finger to her lips indicating her to be silent. Few seconds later a blond-haired boy walked past them looking lost.

"Looking for someone?" Weiss asked as she stepped out of the corner. Her hand was resting on her rapier and her eyes were scanning the familiar boy. His eyes widened, it seemed he recognized her from the club. That begged the question what was someone like him doing at Beacon.

"Were you… following us?" Ruby asked hesitantly and the boy before them blushed a little.

"I know it looks bad, but you two were the last at the landing platform and I didn't know where to go so I just followed you." He said, his cheeks reddening even more. Weiss put her hand of her weapon and banished any thought that the boy before her may be some spy or stalker. He was just dumb she realized.

Ruby examined him a bit more closely before her eyes widen in realization. "Wait, aren't you the guy that threw up on the ship?" Ruby asked the blue-eyed knight who grimaced.

Ruby invited Jaune to join them for their walk towards the auditorium. Weiss, however, tried to not pay him much attention as she continued walking.

"Look, all I'm saying is that a motion sickness is a serious problem." Jaune tried to explain his situation to Ruby as they walked towards the amphitheater.

"Ok, I'm sorry. Vomit boy was just the first thing that came to mind." Ruby responded with slightly apologetic look.

"Well, the name's Jaune Arc. Short, sweet, roles of the tongue, ladies love it." He said and Weiss wondered if he told that to every girl he met.

"I very much doubt it." Weiss said without even giving him a glance. She still remembered how he tried to shamelessly flirt with her and didn't take no for an answer. She swore if he says anything remotely flirty again, she is going to teach him a lesson he will never forget.

Ruby, seeing the tension rise decided to change the topic and reached for her weapon that was strapped to her backand showed it off for Jaune to see. "So… I got this thing."

"Wow, is that a fricking scythe?!" Jaune asked looking the weapon up and down.

"It's also customized, high impact sniper rifle." Ruby explained proudly, but Jaune just looked more confused than before so Ruby simplified things for him. "It's also a gun."

"Where did you buy something like this?" Jaune asked and Ruby looked almost insulted.

"I didn't buy her; I made Crescent Rose all by myself." Ruby stated a proud smile once again adoring her face. "What about you, didn't you make your own weapon?"

"Not really." Jaune said pulling his sword out of its sheathe. "This sword is in our family for generations. My great-grand father used it in the Great War. My dad gave it to me after I left for Beacon."

"Sounds like a family heirloom to me." Said Ruby while admiring the blade, but Weiss wasn't really interested in an outdated sword and shield that didn't even use any Dust.

"So, what about you, what can your sword do?" Jaune asked.

Weiss laughed, if he expected her to tell him about her weapon, he was even bigger fool than she initially thought. Only a fool would talk about their weapon's capabilities to some they just met. "You will find out when you have to."

Jaune looked puzzled and looked towards Ruby for answers and Weiss expected her to tell him everything she knew, but to her surprise Ruby just shook her head, not saying anything and Weiss's opinion of the girl rose up slightly again.

Like Ruby said earlier, she saw weapons as a part of a person and if Weiss didn't want to share that part of her with Jaune it wasn't her place to say anything.

Soon all three of them made it to the amphitheater. And Ruby noticed a mane of blond hair not too far away from the entrance.

Her sister turned around just in time to see Ruby walk in. "Hey Ruby over here I saved-" Yang froze when she noticed the girl walking next to her sister. Her heartbeat quickened as her eyes locked on the white haired girl.

"You!" Yang's shout alerted Weiss just in time to notice the blond girl running at her. The blond threw a punch aiming for her head but Weiss simply stepped to the side letting her fist sail past her face. She grabbed her outstretched hand and threw her against a wall without much effort, using the girl's momentum against her.

Yang grunted and got back to her feet, just to see Weiss looking at her, amused smile forming on her face. "Get away from my sister or I swear you will regret the day you were born." She said nothing but anger in her voice. That was good, anger just makes people more predictable.

"Brave words for someone that was crawling away from me in fear the last time we fought." She felt excitement bubble up within her, the never-ending thrill of battle. "I will enjoy breaking you for a second time. We will even have audience this time around." This situation was actually better than she could hope for. Yang was strong, possibly stronger than 90 % of all the students in here. If she makes an example out of her, everyone will know what will happen to those that cross her.

Suddenly Ruby jumped between the two of them. Stopping Yang from charging at Weiss again. "Yang, stop. What are you doing?" She asked finding no reason for her outburst.

"Ruby get away from her, she's dangerous." Said Yang, glaring at Weiss.

Weiss just chuckled at her comment. "You say that, but it was you who threw the first punch. I simply delivered the last."

Ruby's eyes widen as she connected the dots. "white haired bitch" those were Yang's words when she came home looking like she just fought dozens of Beringels. She turned around and looked at Weiss's hair. They were white.

"But, but that's not right. Weiss saved my life week ago. She helped me fight the thieves. She isn't a bad guy." Ruby said not sure what to think.

"I-" Yang started but Weiss interrupted her before she could say another word.

"Attacked me like a maniac after I refused to answer about the red eyed woman." The way Weiss saw it she should be happy to be alive.

Before anyone could say anything, the headmaster stepped on the stage of the amphitheater. If he noticed their little fight, he didn't say anything about it.

"I'll make this brief. All of you traveled here in search of knowledge, to hone your skills and to become huntsman. But when I look among you all I see is wasted energy, in need of guidance, searching for a purpose. You think you will find this purpose here, but this school can only show you the path. It's up to you to make the first step." Ozpin's speech left most of the students stunned.

Ozpin soon left the stage and professor Goodwitch took his place. "For tonight you will be sleeping in the mass hall, we will provide you with sleeping bags. The initiation will begin tomorrow at 10 o'clock. I recommend you to rest well." Weiss used this opportunity to leave the two sisters and Jaune behind and went to look around the academy.

Ruby sighed as she looked at her sister, while she was writing a letter. Feelings of helplessness washed over her. Yang's bad mood came back tenfold after what happened at the amphitheater. The fact that others were looking at her and whispering something about "blond brute" didn't help either. She wanted to help Yang but didn't know how.

Yang notice that Ruby was looking at her, worry latched onto her face, and did her best to smile. "Been here for few hours and already made a reputation for myself. I'd say that's my new record."

"Not a good one." Ruby whispered unsure of what to say next but eventually she steeled her nerves and asked her question. "Did you and Weiss fight each other before?"

It was the wrong thing to asks, evident by the frown that formed on Yang's face.

Fight. Yang didn't consider being toyed with half the battle, managing to land a lucky hit at the cost of most of her aura before getting bodied like she was some newbie a fight. She shook her head; last thing she wanted was to make Ruby worried.

"Can we talk about anything else than Weiss, like for example the letter you've been writing for the past ten minutes."

"This? I'm just writhing to my classmates from Signal. I promised I would tell them about Beacon." Ruby face fell as she remembered she wouldn't be seeing any of them any time soon. "Well former classmates now."

"What, you are going to miss seeing their weapons?" Yang chuckled a bit and Ruby threw a pillow at her face.

"Shut up, unlike you I didn't get to bring my friends with me." Ruby pouted.

"That's why I told you to make some; the sooner you do the better." Yang told Ruby, before she remembered the guy that walked alongside Ruby to the amphitheater. "What about that blond guy you seemed to get along quite well."

"Jaune? We're friends, I thing." Ruby said recalling how the boy said that strangers were just friends you haven't met. "He's alright, but..." As if on cue Jaune Ark walked into the mass hall. Dressed in his bunny onesie pajamas, drawing everyone's attention to himself without even realizing it.

"Socially awkward?" Yang offered and Ruby nodded. "Well, the night is still young and this is like a big slumber party. Perfect place to make some friends."

Ruby sighted but decided to go along with her sister, besides it wouldn't hurt to actually make some friends.

Her silver eyes scanned the room before they landed on a girl sitting in a corner while reading a book. "Great choice!" Yang noticed this and grabbed Ruby by her hand and started dragging Ruby towards her.

"Yang, wait!" She exclaimed but before she could explain that the girl wasn't exactly friendly Yang already dragged Ruby to her.

"Um, hi?" Said Ruby not knowing how to start a conversation.

"Hello." Said the girl not paying Ruby much attention. She looked at her for a few seconds before she continued reading.

Yang noticed her sister's awkwardness and decided to help her. "I'm Yang and this is my sister Ruby. Nice to meet you."

"Blake." She introduced herself without even looking from her book.

"I like your bow; it goes great with your …pajamas." Not giving up Yang tried to start a conversation. Blake however just ignored her as she turned another page in her book.

"It sure is nice weather today, isn't it?" Yang made one last attempt to talk to her but, "...yeah almost as nice as this book, which I'm going to read. Once you leave." Blake immediately dismissed her.

Yang took a sharp breath. She took back what she said earlier, Ruby had no idea how to pick her friends.

"What's it about." Ruby asked curiously.

"The man with two souls." Blake sighted and answered, it was one of her favorite books but if the red-headed girl would fake interest just to-

"It's about Dr. Jackal and Mr. Hyde." Ruby answered almost instantly and for the first time during their conversation Blake started to pay attention to the girl.

"You've read it?" Blake asked not really believing that a 15-year-old girl would read something like this.

"Yeah." Ruby answered. Seeing the disbelieve in the girl's eyes she decided to continue. "Dr. Jackal was a great huntsman, but he was plagued by dark thoughts, he felt shame for enjoying battle and hurting his enemies. So, he created an elixir that was supposed to get rid of these dark thoughts. And it worked Dr. Jackal no longer enjoyed hurting others, but those feelings didn't disappear, they created a whole new personality, Mr. Hyde, that slowly starts taking control over him."

"Dr. Jackal was a good man with strong sense of justice who cared about the well beings of others. Mr. Hyde was the complete opposite, he was evil, cold blooded and cruel, he didn't care about others seeing them as weak and beneath him. He had no sense of morals and killed just for his fun."

Yang looked her sister up and down with her mouth hanging open. "Aren't you a bit too young to be reading something like this?" She asked after a while.

"I'm old enough to read what I want." Ruby said, crossing her arms and Blake chuckled a bit at the sister's interaction.

"Glad to see someone else who can appreciate good literature." She said, closing her book and giving her full attention to the girl before her.

"Well, I mostly just stick to fairytales." Ruby said sheepishly. She remembered the time her mother would read them to her before bed. "Those stories were what inspired me to become a huntress."

Blake looked her in the eyes before a cold feeling settled over her. "The real world isn't like fairytales. Most of the time Mr. Hyde wins over Dr. Jackal. Most of the time there isn't a happy ever after."

"I know." And she really did, more than most people in this room. She knew that not always the main hero came back home to her family. "But that doesn't mean I won't try my hardest to help everyone."

And Blake could see an unyielding determination in the girl's eyes. "Sorry for being rude earlier. My name is Blake, Blake Belladonna. It's nice to meet you." She said. Maybe it wasn't such a bad idea to make some friends while she was at Beacon.

Her search of the Academy didn't reveal anything significant to the young heiress. She done fair bit of research on Beacon and found out that the school formed teams and partners completely randomly and the methods varied from year to year. But there was something more important than the formation of her future team.

What could Cinder Fall want in Beacon? She noticed some expensive artworks and some of the furniture could be considered historical, but if she wanted money there was easier ways to get it than robbing a school full of warriors. If anyone knew what that something was, it would be Ozpin, and asking him was out of the question for obvious reason. She could torture the information out of him, but she doubted the disappearance of the headmaster would go under the radar.

There was very little Weiss knew about Cinder, there weren't any records of her, so Weiss was forced to rely on the information Roman gave her, which wasn't much. She doubted that he was trying to keep things from her; most likely Cinder didn't trust him enough to share her plans with him. Smart decision, Roman proved himself quite unreliable.

Speaking of the thief, she should find him as fast as possible. He wasn't trust worthy and was only loyal to himself. If there wasn't anything else he could offer her she would kill him. Weiss made it a point to not leave any lose ends.

Out of the corner of her eye she could see the three girls she met today. Ruby, Blake and Yang were sitting in a circle and Weiss could hear them talking about 'The man with two souls.' Weiss frowned; out of all the books she read this one was her least favorite. Reading how Dr. Jackal slowly started losing control over himself and becoming what he feared the most always made her feel … unpleasant.

She pushed that thought to the back of the mind. Now the main problem was Cinder. She apparently was strong enough to force the White Fang to do her bidding. She doubted Cinder was just a White Fang sympathizer, trying to make the world a better place for the Faunus race.

Not knowing her motives complicated things, it made her unpredictable. But she would crush her like everyone else; she wouldn't accept anything less than that.
