That night, or rather early the next morning as it were, once Elphaba and Nessa were asleep, dorothy made her way over to the vault door. Opening Alex's watch, 10 minutes passed midnight. Dorothy said and placed her hands on the wall. Concentrating, she knew what she wanted, she knew she had no control, but she had to try. If she was going to see him again soon. She thought of the price she would have to pay, that meant a change in the rules, no visitors most likely. But these were all paranoid thoughts brought on by the bargain she had made. She hadn't been thinking rationally, but she refused to accept failure as an option. She wanted the door to open and began to focus all her will onto conjuring a spell.
"come on, we've done stranger before, we've seen and done stranger." Dorothy whispered to herself.
she thought of alex, her burning desire to see him again. His face forming in her head. He would never have allowed her to do this, even for him. But she didn't want to accept that. She had, in her own opinion lost too many people. She wasn't going to properly lose anyone else. Not if she could fight it. she thought about him, his good qualities, and his bad that were now going to be awoken by this. Her goal would be to keep the beast from causing to many problems while keeping alex under control. However, her mind then drifted to the scepter. If it was still where she left it, it would be in the room she had been occupying.
"could I?" Dorothy asked herself.
She wondered if she could call to it, she knew that she had energy built up inside of her. But she wondered if the scepter along with her own energy could bind a spell powerful enough to release the door. She closed her eyes, sat down, legs crossed hands against the door. She didn't know what she was doing. But it felt right. She cleared her mind of all other thoughts. Her mind called out to the scepter, reaching towards it. had she opened her eyes and broke her concentration. Or if someone had been awake to witness it. they would have seen Dorothy's hands glowing, feeding energy into the wall. She felt relaxed, calm, as if the pink orb Glinda kept around was in her lap. She lost track o the time, though the only thing that reached her ears was the ticking of the watch.
Elsewhere in castle garrison, the scepter, having finally returned to a normal state. Heard its mistress's call. It began binding the spell she wanted. And over time it grew stronger. The shift in energy was noticed. The jester who hardly ever slept, was the first to go examine. When he found the scepter glowing and binding a spell of its own he chuckled.
"well, the kid is actually doing it." he said bursting into manic laughter.
When rose heard the laughter she immediately got up, as did lily, violet and Thomas to see what the commotion was about.
"I can't believe it!" Rose said in shock.
The jester pulled the wand from his sleeve and pointed it at the full mirror. Immediately it rippled, revealing Glinda's bedroom. Glinda at her desk, nose in a book.
"Hey glin?" the jester enquired.
"what?" Glinda asked sternly, not looking up from her book.
"Care to take a look?" The jester asked walking over to the mirror and turning it so that the scepter was in view.
Glinda looked up, her spectacles falling off her face as she saw the scepter binding a spell. She smiled, slightly relieved
"well, I have always said she showed promise for becoming a witch, how long ago?" Glinda asked as the clock struck three.
"about 10 minutes ago, the energy in the castle shifted." The jester said.
However elsewhere in castle garrison, Zinnia, who had been set up to make sure no one assisted her, was standing in front of the vault door. It was glowing now, the locking mechanisms would soon be tripped, and the vault would release with a few hours to spare.
Back in the vault however, dorothy was starting to lose control of the energy and it showed. It wasn't going to stop after the door opened, but she was as aware of her situation as a piece of dust is to its source. The door was now completely enveloped in the spell binding around it. it wasn't until she fell forward to the sound of the clock striking 4 that she realized had done it. taking a breath in and opening her eyes. she realized she was now on the threshold of the vault, half inside, half out. The sound of someone clapping quite slowly caught her attention.
"well, I must say, that was very well done, not conventional, but well done." Zinnia said helping dorothy to her feet as a strong gust of wind seemed to blow through the entire castle.
"Did, I properly do it?" dorothy asked catching her breath.
"you did, no help, I knew you could do it." Zinnia said dusting dorothy off.
Dorothy smiled, and turned to see Elphaba and Nessarose, standing behind her. Mouths hanging open, eyes wide.
"she actually did it." Nessa said snapping her fingers.
Immediately the fire in the fireplace relit. Dorothy smiled wider now, if she had a mirror she assumed she would have almost resembled Madeline. She was drained though, she had exerted a lot of energy and she would learn from Madeline later that it hadn't even made a dent in the amount she had built up. Though at the time she instinctively knew this would be the case. Her vision suddenly went fuzzy and she staggered.
"poor thing, must be exhausted, when did it start?" Nessa asked curiously.
"10 passed, midnight." Dorothy said starting to feel dizzy.
"you're joking." Elphaba asked sounding shocked.
"is a wonder she hasn't passed out yet." Zinnia said.
Dorothy said nothing, she simply did something that could only be described as a cross between a snort and a giggle, then completely blacked out.
