Chapter 2

Summer plans and (not) discussing parents.

"I have one question" Ichigo said the next day during breakfast.

He ran towards the cottage after meeting the witch and he didn't tell anyone about his little encounter but he couldn't keep quiet any longer, he had spent the whole night thinking about her and wondering if she was really a witch. Luckily Yoruichi and Urahara would be able to clear his doubts, they basically owned the whole place so they knew everything that happened at the town and the woods.

Yoruichi nodded.

"What is it?" she asked him as the maid poured some orange juice for her.

"Is the witch real?" Ichigo questioned carefully.

Yoruichi frowned at him.

"Why the stupid question?" she asked him.

"Why do you think it's a stupid question?" Ichigo asked back.

"Because witches aren't real, Ichigo" Yoruichi said as if it was obvious "women just don't fly on brooms, or talk to animals and they don't..."

"Dance naked in the middle of the woods to worship the devil?" Urahara suggested smirking.

Yoruichi rolled her eyes at her husband.

"Why are you curious about the witch? It's just a stupid legend that the locals use to make the town popular" she explained "well, Hanatarou believes it's true but..."

"I saw her" Ichigo said interrupting Yoruichi "yesterday as I came back through the shortcut, I got lost and I met her."

Urahara hid his smirk behind his coffee mug while Yoruichi scoffed.

"This is stupid" she said "it was probably just a farm girl, what did she look like?"

"Magical" Ichigo said simply and Yoruichi felt the need to smack him, why was he smiling stupidly?

"Physical appearance, boy" Yoruichi said while waving a hand "eye color, hair color..."

"Well..." Ichigo said scratching the back of his head "she was really short, at least from my point of view, she was wearing a white crop top and a white skirt and she had black hair."

"What part of that was magical for you?" Yoruichi asked while taking a sip of her orange juice.

"Her eyes," Ichigo said without hesitation "she had the most unique, violet eyes I've ever seen."

Yoruichi spit the juice she was drinking all over the table as Urahara started to laugh loudly. Ichigo blinked confused as he made sure that his breakfast wasn't wet, what was that for?

"Where did you see this witch again?" Yoruichi questioned and Ichigo thought that she looked angry.

"In the middle of the woods... I think" he said "there was a stream and she was there, I approached her out of curiosity."

"Was she alone?" Yoruichi asked.

Ichigo thought about it for a second.

"Well, it depends in your point of view" he reasoned "her only companion was a black, German shepherd, she called him called Kon."

Yoruichi stabbed the table with a knife and Ichigo jumped slightly scared, he also noticed how the maid giggled. What was going on?

"Is everything okay?" Ichigo asked fearfully "do you know this girl? Is she really a witch?"

Yoruichi glared at Ichigo as she pointed with her fork at him.

"Hear me out," she ordered "witches aren't real and you are not allowed to go inside the woods, never. If you, by any chance, see that girl near the woods you tell her that I'll tie her up in the middle of the plaza to perform a witch burning ritual, did I make myself clear?"

Ichigo nodded as he gulped, Yoruichi was really pissed.

"So..." he pressed on after a few seconds "that girl, she's not a witch?"

Yoruichi glared at him again and stood up.

"Oh, where are you going? Yoruichi-san?" Urahara asked amused.

"Witch hunting" she declared angrily and left the dining room leaving a confused Ichigo behind.

Rukia packed everything that was necessary and decided that she was ready. She wasn't allowed to sleep at Yoruichi's cottage but she was still going to make the most out of her summer and, after meeting Ichigo, she decided that he was going to be fun to have around. With a satisfied sigh she hid her bag under her bed and checked the clock, she still had a few hours before meeting the orange haired boy again.

Yoruichi was seeing red, she knew that it was almost impossible for Rukia to follow basic rules but seriously? The woods? Why couldn't she stay away from the woods? She stepped into the Kuchiki's cottage as the guards at the front gate bowed respectfully at her, she greeted them with a smirk as she walked towards the porch.

Before she could even ring the doorbell a maid opened the front door for her and greeted her with a bow.

"Yoruichi-sama," the young maid said "it's an honor to see you, shall I call Ginrei-sama or perhaps Rukia-sama?"

Yoruichi was about to answer until she realized that Rukia was at the top of the stairs.

"It's okay," Yoruichi told the maid without taking her eyes off Rukia "I already found who I was looking for."

The maid bowed again and left them alone.

"Oh, you're here!" Rukia said happily while walking down the stairs "I knew you would miss me a lot!"

Yoruichi smiled at her and noticed how Rukia was barefoot, again, and she was wearing a white loose t-shirt with blue shorts.

"You won't believe what I heard," Yoruichi told Rukia while patting her head kindly "someone saw the witch."

Rukia gasped and her eyes widened.

"Really?! Someone finally convinced you?!" She asked gleefully "I told you she was real! Even Urahara believes me! Who saw her?!"

"Ichigo" Yoruichi answered and Rukia's smile faded.

"Oh," she said carefully "your godson, uh? What did he tell you?"

Yoruichi shrugged while taking elegant steps around Rukia, like a cat who was ready to jump on her prey.

"That he saw a magical looking girl with violet eyes and black hair in the middle of the woods," she said drawing each word carefully "she was with a black, German shepherd."

Rukia gulped as she realized how angry Yoruichi was.

"Oh..." she said.

"Yes, "oh"" Yoruichi said while crossing her arms and looking at Rukia seriously "you won't believe how shocked I was, I wanted to believe that this was a coincidence, after all, the little witch cannot look exactly the same as my goddaughter."

"Well..." Rukia tried to say.

"My goddaughter who is not allowed to go into the woods, never, ever since she came to live at this town at the young age of four," Yoruichi continued "because…"

"Would you look at the hour?!" Rukia asked while interrupting Yoruichi and looking at her wrist although she didn't have a wristwatch.

"Rukia..." Yoruichi said warningly.

"Sorry, I have to go!" Rukia said and ran upstairs as fast as she could.

Yoruichi followed her as she tried not to yell at her in case Ginrei-sama was in an online meeting. It was infuriating to an untold degree how childish Rukia could be sometimes, it made her want to call Byakuya and informed him but that wasn't an option, not for now at least.

Rukia opened her bedroom door and stepped inside, Yoruichi caught up to her and once they were both inside Rukia's room she closed the door behind her. It was a good thing that the walls were thick because Yoruichi wanted to give her an earful.

"You are not allowed to go into the woods! Never!" Yoruichi started angrily "what were you thinking?!"

Rukia crossed her arms stubbornly.

"The sun was still out and I respected the curfew!" she excused herself "I was careful and there weren't any dangerous animals around. Besides, I wasn't the deep into..."

"Ichigo saw you at the stream" Yoruichi interrupted her "that's way too deep. How many times are you going to break that rule?!"

"Oh, come on!" Rukia said scoffing "I was careful, besides..."

Yoruichi glared at her and she shut up.

"Hear me out," Yoruichi ordered her "I don't want to go into the woods to look for you again, the last time I almost had a heart attack."

"I was eight" Rukia excused herself frowning, she didn't like to remember that incident.

"I don't care" Yoruichi retorted "now, if you want to meet Ichigo you just have to visit the cottage or the farm, but I just wanted him to have a few peaceful days, is that too much to ask?"

Rukia scoffed.

"What makes you think I'll disrupt his peace?" She asked offended.

Yoruichi raised an eyebrow at her.

"He saw you a few minutes yesterday and he's been wondering this whole time if witches are real!" she said "you'll make him go crazy, child."

Rukia laughed.

"He believed me?! Oh my God! He thinks I'm the witch?!"

"He's doubting it" Yoruichi admitted frowning "don't mess up with his head, please."

Rukia shrugged.

"Did you tell him who I was? Or can I still pretend to be the witch?" She asked while approaching Yoruichi and hugging her playfully.

"I didn't tell him anything" Yoruichi said smirking at her "but you won't keep up the façade because you won't go into the woods anymore, did I make myself clear?"

Rukia nodded.

"Don't worry," she said sighing dramatically "I'll mess up with the maids to get rid of my boredom."

Yoruichi rolled her eyes, she wasn't going to mess up with the maids, they all could handle her and even if they couldn't they all had explicit orders to inform Yoruichi about anything.

"Fine," she said finally "I'll be keeping an eye on you."

Rukia smiled sweetly at her.

Ichigo knew that going against Yoruichi's orders was out of the question, he was a guest and he didn't want to face her wrath, but after spending the whole day inside the cottage and helping Urahara at the farm area he decided that he wanted to know more about the witch. So, once Yoruichi was nowhere to be found and Urahara was giving instructions to Jinta and Ururu, he left the cottage as quietly as he could.

He knew he just had to follow the same path from yesterday so he kept his eyes open while trying to remember the details from his little detour. He knew he had succeeded once he heard the stream and he stood up next to it, waiting.

As the minutes passed by he wondered why he was doing it, why was he waiting for a crazy as hell girl who was joking with him? Witches weren't real, right? He wasn't cursed, right? He looked up and realized that it was going to get dark soon, would she come? He remembered she said something about a curfew.

He was about to give up and go back when he heard some barking, he turned around only to come face to face with Kon, the black, German shepherd.

"Hey," Ichigo said while kneeling down, it was a good thing that he wasn't growling at him now "what are you doing here?"

The dog approached him moving his tail happily and Ichigo noticed how he had a piece of paper tied on his collar.

"Is this for me?" Ichigo asked as he took it and read aloud.

"You told the matriarch about me, now we cannot meet at the same place. Keep your window open, I'll see you tonight." - The witch.

Ichigo frowned, now he was more confused than ever, why was Yoruichi her matriarch? And how did she know he had told her about their meeting?

"Your owner is quite crazy, isn't she?"

Kon simply barked at him and went back to where he came from.

Rukia observed the rising moon and, after leaving everything she needed in the rightful place, made her way towards Yoruichi's cottage.

Hopefully no one would notice her presence.

Ichigo kept his window opened.

He didn't know what he was expecting but he couldn't sleep. The lights around the cottage were turned off but the moon was full so that gave him enough visibility and that way, he wouldn't call anyone's attention.

A few minutes went by and he heard something outside his window. His heart skipped a beat as he saw the witch. She was wearing a black, sleeveless dress and a witch hat. Ichigo gaped as she stepped into the room through the window, as if she had done it several times before, and he noticed she was barefoot.

He thought she looked cute.

"What..." Ichigo tried to ask but she ran towards him and covered his mouth with her hand.

"Don't make a sound" the witch whispered "Yoruichi is a light sleeper, we only have a few minutes."

Ichigo nodded.

"Now," she said "we'll leave through the window and after we do everything we need to you'll come back, don't tell anyone you saw me, okay?"

Ichigo nodded again, he didn't know why he was agreeing with her but he had to admit that this was the most interesting thing that had happened to him in his life. He didn't count the time he went with Renji towards the tattoo parlor because watching the redhead getting his tattoos was traumatizing, not interesting.

"Where are we going?" He asked "and why should I go with you?"

"Because..." Rukia said but she was interrupted.

"THE WITCH IS INSIDE THE COTTAGE, I REPEAT THE WITCH IS INSIDE THE COTTAGE!" someone yelled through a megaphone, or at least that's how it sounded for Ichigo, and both teenagers tensed.

Ichigo and Rukia gasped at the same time.

"Urahara!" the witch muttered angrily "he caught me!"

An alarm started to sound loudly around the whole place and Ichigo started to sweat, he didn't want to get in trouble, he had being living with Urahara and Yoruichi for two days!

Rukia observed the boy's panicked expression and fought the urge to laugh, he was probably a goody two shoes, besides wasn't he Urahara's godson? He had to know how dramatic the mad hatter was, right? There was no need to panic.

"Don't worry," she told him as she ran towards the window and grabbed something "I brought a broom!"

Ichigo's eyes widened as he saw the broom, she wasn't lying.

"What for? To fly away?" He asked although he could swear that his voice couldn't be heard because of the alarm.

"What? No! To lock the door!" Rukia said running towards the door and blocking it with the broom "it'll give us a few minutes" she said as she ran towards Ichigo and grabbed his hand "come with me."

Ichigo was about to follow her when he heard someone pounding on the door.

"Ichigo! Don't!" Yoruichi said from the other side of the door "why would you follow someone who claims to be a witch?! Are you an idiot?!"

Ichigo hesitated for a second but the weird girl simply laughed and dragged him towards the window, there was something reassuring about her hand on his and besides, he didn't see many nice teenagers around town, was it wrong for him to look for a little bit of fun?

"We're going to jump" she informed him as Yoruichi kept struggling with the door and the alarm kept doing the uproarious sound "follow my example."

Ichigo observed as she let go off his hand and stood on the window's frame, she turned around to face him and let go off the window's frame to fall freely on her back. Ichigo's eyes widened as he tried to stop her, but as he leaned on the window he noticed how she fell on the bushes down the window, unharmed.

"Hurry up!" She called him and, with a lot of fear, Ichigo jumped just like her.

He closed his eyes waiting to feel a lot of pain but it never came, the bushes prevented the fall and he was on his feet in a matter of seconds.

"The evil, little witch is kidnapping our godson!" Urahara yelled from his room's balcony and Ichigo started to run along with the girl.

"He'll be back before you notice!" Rukia yelled at Urahara with a smile.

"You're an idiot if you think I won't tell your grandfather about this!" Yoruichi yelled and Ichigo noticed how she was on his room's window.

"Did she break my door?!" Ichigo asked without stopping running.

"That's my door!" The girl said confusing him more.

Ichigo was about to ask what she meant by that but the witch jumped the fence and Ichigo followed her example.

"Don't let go off my hand" she warned him as they stepped into the woods "the path is tricky, you might get lost."

Ichigo nodded and together they got inside the woods.

"I'll kill her" Yoruichi said while crossing her arms and observing the door she broke "she literally kidnapped him!"

Urahara couldn't stop laughing, he was holding his sides while leaning against the broken door's frame.

"How…?! How did she leave her cottage! She's not allowed to go out at night!" Yoruichi scoffed as she thought that perhaps the maids were not that good at keeping an eye on Rukia.

Urahara just kept laughing.

"Well," he said finally as his laughter started to fade "at least Ichigo is going to have an interesting summer, don't you think?"

"She'll make him go crazy" Yoruichi said while leaving the room to try to sleep "but we're not going to repair that door, just in case."

Urahara started to laugh again.

Ichigo looked around and frowned.

"This is it?" He asked disappointed "a tree house?!"

"Calm down, city boy" Rukia told him rolling his eyes "take a seat, I brought enough things to survive tonight."

Ichigo looked around again, it was obvious how the little tree house was used regularly. There were mangas, books, notebooks and colors scattered around the floor which was covered by a fluffy, comfortable looking carpet. There were some framed pictures on the walls, Ichigo observed them and his eyes widened.

There was also a couple of kerosene lamps and two lunchboxes, Ichigo noticed how one had soda cans while the other had several sandwiches, the girl turned on one of the lamps and hanged it carefully on one hook just outside the window.

Ichigo noticed how the window gave a perfect view of Yoruichi and Urahara's cottage. They were probably able to see the light coming from the lamp.

"There," the girl said while taking a seat on the carpet "that way they'll know I won't take you inside the woods."

Ichigo frowned as he took a seat in front of her, he fought the urge to check her mangas.

"We're not in the woods?" He asked curiously.

"Not exactly," the girl explained while passing him a soda, he accepted gratefully "this area is still inside Yoruichi and Urahara's property, if you keep going forward you'll find another fence that leads to the main town road."

"Oh," Ichigo said impressed "you seem to know the area quite well, did you grow up here?"

The girl smirked devilishly at him.

"I'm the witch!" She told him confidently "didn't you pay attention yesterday?"

Ichigo rolled his eyes.

"You're not the witch" he said smirking "witches aren't real and witches don't take that sort of pictures" he added while pointing to the one of the framed pictures on the wall.

Rukia scoffed as she stood up and grabbed the picture he was pointing at, she had been discovered so the joke was over.

"Fun's over" she said while taking a seat again and looking at the picture. She was four and she was smiling while riding a horse, Urahara was next to her holding the horse by the reins and Yoruichi was seated behind her, it was a nice picture.

"Who are you?" Ichigo asked her curiously "how do you know my godparents?"

Rukia frowned at him.

"They are my godparents too," she said with a little bit of jealousy "you're not the only one for them, you know?"

Ichigo chuckled.

"Is the midget jealous?" He taunted and Rukia frowned deeper.

"Shut up" she said finally "anyway, my name's Rukia, I've been living in this town since I was four. My granddaddy owns the cottage in front of this one and he has some business alliances with Urahara and Yoruichi."

"Nice to meet you, Rukia" he said carefully "no last name?"

Rukia scoffed, the probabilities that the boy would leave the tree house running after hearing her last name were high as hell but she wasn't going to hide her identity the whole summer, it would be way too troublesome.

"I'm Kuchiki Rukia" she said and grimaced when Ichigo's eyes widened "and before you ask, yes. Kuchiki Byakuya is my father, Soujun my grandfather and Ginrei my great grandfather. Ginrei is the one who lives in the fancy, looking cottage in front of Urahara and Yoruichi."

Ichigo gaped.

"You're the famous Kuchiki Rukia?! The stuck up Byakuya is your father?!" he asked surprised "I've been having dinner with the bastard for months and when my father asks about you he makes it sound like you live overseas, what the hell?"

"Did you just called daddy a bastard?" She asked, her eyes were glinting.

"I'm sorry I..." Ichigo said as he realized his mistake.

Rukia surprised him by laughing.

"Don't worry! I'm not offended! That was funny!" she said happily "I thought that you would escape after hearing my family's name."

Ichigo shrugged and wondered if that had happened to her before, it sounded sad.

"The Kuchikis are sort of intimidating" he admitted "but I get along with them, although Byakuya always say something about my hair color, he believes I look like a criminal."

"You do" Rukia said chuckling "daddy is wise, you should listen to him."

Ichigo scoffed.

"So..." he said "why are you living here? Why aren't you with Byakuya in Karakura?"

Rukia frowned.

"Do you want to talk about parents?" She asked him, Ichigo noticed her defensive tone.

"No," he said quickly and then he remembered "but since we touched the subject, how did you know I fought with my father? And how did you know he's a doctor?"

Rukia rolled her eyes.

"Yoruichi told me" she answered "she didn't give details, all she told me was that you argued with your father and that you needed some peaceful time, then she kicked me out of the cottage so you could have my room."

Ichigo blinked.

"Wait," he said "your room? Didn't you say your family owns the cottage in front of this one?"

"What about it?" She asked.

"Why are you living with Yoruichi and Urahara?"

Rukia shrugged.

"They have space" she said simply "anyway, this conversation is dull, I just brought you here to discuss our summer plans!"

"Summer plans?" Ichigo asked aghast, he wanted to know why the he wasn't living with Byakuya, even Soujun spoke about her from time to time, didn't she miss them? Didn't Ginrei travel quite often to the city? Why hadn't he seen her before?

Rukia nodded.

"I was planning on giving you a tour tomorrow," she said while taking a notebook and writing something down "we cannot go into the woods but we should be able to have fun either way, we can ride the horses and since you're here Yoruichi might let us go to the party on the next town and we can go to the lake to…"

"Stop," Ichigo said while grabbing a sandwich "what makes you think I'll do all of this? I don't even know you."

Rukia chuckled.

"Do you have anything else to do, sulky, rich, city boy?" She asked smugly.

Ichigo thought about it for a second. No, he didn't have anything else to do and for what he saw there weren't many teenagers around and while Kuchiki Rukia was crazy as hell he had to admit that her antics were fun, although he would probably face Yoruichi's wrath thanks to her. Ichigo observed the pretty girl in front of him, she had unique eyes and a huge sense of adventure, she was cute and, basically, she wasn't a stranger because they had the same godparents.

Ichigo smirked at her.

"Fine," he said finally "let's hear about our summer plans."

Rukia smiled at him as she started to talk.
